1973 Honda XL175 Restoration - Part 2 - Engines, Gears and Design Flaws!

  • Welcome back Scrivscribers! In this video I get right into the disassembly of the bike. Unfortunately Honda did an awful job designing the kick start mechanism on the XL175, and as a result I am retracing the steps to get it fixed. I also changed the tyres, gave the wheels a polish and fixed the exhaust pipe!

I rode one of those back then, it was a joy to ride, dependable, with excellent torque at low rpm.
The previous bike I rode was a Kawasaki KH250 3 cylinder, 2 stroke, which had the low rpm power of a lawnmower.
Good memories, but mostly of the Honda. 🤣

Enjoying the show. I had the xlr125 back in the 80s. Nice bike.

Impressive - you took one look at the oil nut and said - "I need a special tool that can unscrew this". Smart, observant and very patient. Most people would try and just use a screwdriver and butcher the whole thing. Now I'm subscribed. :-)

Can’t wait for the finished bike. Mine in the 70s had a red tank. Loved that bike. Upgraded to a CB550 in college.

There is always some part of a restore or repair that wakes you up at night ..I can't do it, I can't do it......great to see someone just diving head on into it...and the tyre changes - impressive (for me anyway).

Great video. I did panic a bit when your friend told you to drill out the bolts before you started with the impact driver. Glad you went with the latter approach.

Bought one brand new and the kick start shaft snapped just after the warranty run out, push started it for about 6 months while I saved for a new one, Had so much fun on that little bike. Currently got a 2018 Triumph T120 jet black and in sentimental tribute to the XL I having the tank painted with some orange stripes. Look forward to part 3

Good work! No matter how much you speed up a tire change it still looks like a pain in the ass, haha.

The reason the engine case screws are rounded out is people used phillips head screw drivers on them. They are J.i.s. japanese industrial screw. They are different. You could have cut a slot in them & used the slot bit with the impact driver.

Great series, but trying to split two engine cases with a screwdriver is a really bad idea. Your eventually going to mark one of the mating surfaces and it wont seal properly when it comes to putting everything back together.
