To bad the game kinda died out, QW was one of few games I competed in, and the others are all Carmack games before that, as Quake 3 Arena, and Enemy territory, so much fun me and my buddies had with those games... Why can`t Carmack get back and make a real good shooter again? sigh...
I guess Carmack is just tired of making games. He's a great programmer, but not a particulary good game designer, and I think he understands that himself. All he really cares about now is the technology, not games themself.
Of all the quake games, I LOVED the first's mood, graphic style, sound design, level design, specially the verticality of the maps, they need to make a sequel to that game!
Quake Champions is a PC exclusive. The only people who will show interest in it (beyond the first 2-3 weeks) are the current Quake community, which largely comprises of adult men aged 25-40. They also happen to be the highest skilled FPS players in the gaming world. Tim Willits is lead design and project manager. He is the sole surviving member of the original Quake era iD Software and as such the development could be in no better hands. If Tim gets a handful of Quake godfathers on board such as Rapha, Toxic, Evil or even Fatal1ty then he cannot go far wrong. Do not expect a true successor to Quake III and certainly do not expect a miracle like Quake III to happen again. Carmack himself admitted that Q3's genius was a fluke and beyond even his own goals and expectations. Although very modest, we now know that to be partially true. Something just "happened" and Q3 was the only game iD ever made which John himself could not stop playing. However, I do believe that, in order to preserve the top elite level of competitive FPS gaming at the worlds premier eSports events, Zenimax and Bethesda will concede to Tim's authority and not deviate too far from the formula. You should not worry. I have big hopes for the end result. And damn.... it's about time! So the purpose of this video, or any of the Gaming Industry / Establishments videos of hyping some upcoming game, is not needed for Quake. Build it and they will come. Fuck it up and they will not. That is the Quake community and no amount of hype, depth of field, bloom or achievements will change it. Best of luck, Tim!
I'm probably the only 14 year old that actually plays the game. I hope this game will bring a giant playerbase. Even though that would be rare to happen I will hope and I will keep fragging.
Quite good for a dead game to get 500k+ matches done in a week or so. Currently there's a community event where if we reach 1 million matches before November 1st everyone unlocks the new champion - Athena. And those matches are in one game mode: Slipgate. I still play against bots and have no trouble getting 3 other players to play along with me against 4 bots. Considering the number of game modes and that each mode still has players i would say QC is doing just fine. Obviously nothing like Fortnite or Overwatch but that is to be expected.
It needs to get un-consoled. It takes me 4-5 mins to get into game and join a server. Matchmaking is unnecessary on the PC. Bring back the old server browser.
Raziel Fr Its such a good game, shame that they lack a proper tutorial. I never played quake before, just heard about it. it seemed fast paced and cool with the pickups so it got me interested I learned nothing when i started but i stuck around to find out that i could glide to one side to gain speed (aka strafe jump) idk its hard to find full matches sometimes but its lack of proper training for new people.
quake is back and it is real quake. With anarki and the promode movement it does NOT fall short on all hopes and dreams of a good quake player. It is NOT overwatch, does feel 100% real quake. And the action is pure suspense.
I completely missed out on the Quake series while it was coming out, so I want to thank you guys for running down the history of this franchise. It was really interesting!
I loved how Quake 1 had a weird timeline mix of fantasy and sci fi, the dark gothic side stood out to me a lot more though. Because of that I could never get into Quake 2, the fact it was completely unrelated - I was hoping for some kind of classic reboot when I heard they were making a new Quake ;_; RIP my dreams.
I'm a huge fan of the original, one of my favorite games. After playing Quake Champions (and continue playing it), I gotta say it plays just like a Quake game should and stays respectful to pretty much every Quake game, especially the original. Definitely worth playing, I think.
I can basically guarantee that at least one person at id is trying to have Bitterman with Q2 movement released in QC. Maybe you can have that before Christmas.
play quake 4 and change your speed to something higher i think pm_speed or pm_runspeed or something like that will change your speed? It's REALLY fun at high speed
I've only ever played Quake 3, but that game was amazing. I was just a kid at the time with the demo version which was just 4 maps: Longest Yard, Temple of Retribution and a two other maps with preference difficulty bots. But I spent countless hours playing it, it was so much fun.
My all time favorite Quake game! Recently I decided to start playing it again, but this time, on a nightmare difficulty level. Only 4 levels to go, and the challenge is beaten!
another killer video from GameSpot. thanks for taking the time to make this. Quake is what got me into computers when I was just a kid. Thanks for brining back some fond memories!
I remember watching my father play when I was a baby... it was my first ever video game I had ever played... I'm almost 20 now and I'm going to bulk my own pc and ironically there is a new quake comeing... hope that it's nothing like the last two tho... the multilayer was my thing and I was pretty good for a "child"
Quake 3 Arena is the game when I played when I was in collage (2003-2004). I still remember so many hours I have spent playing this game. Nostalgic is what I feel. Still the most memorable game ever played.
***** The new Doom or the old Doom? I'd say the first episode isn't too bad, but it gets pretty heavy later on. This should give you a good idea of what it's like - ua-cam.com/video/cmiC8oYr4ik/v-deo.html
Pul5ar Both. I've seen that review but I still find it hard to believe it's super hard. Quick saving should make things fairly even in terms of difficulty.
I was hoping for a Quake single-player based on the setting of the first game. Bethesda can pull it off after the absolutely amazing single-player campaigns of the new Wolfenstein and Doom games.
There is just too many hero ability based games out at the moment, however no real good arena fast pace game, only UT and Quake was the best at this for me Comander555666
To this day Stroggs are my favourite enemies from all fps games. I just love that freaky design, Doom-like monsters enhanced with high-tech. Needless to say I loved new Revenant from Doom 4 too. Also Hyperblaster and Rocket Launcher looked and felt totally amazing too, best of all Doom/Quake variants of these weapons.
Quake 2 and its exp packs is my quake, still play it today. It was more fleshed out than quake, i loved the setting, story and the music, the quake 2 music was awesome, ah the days you could put a game disc in your cd player and listen to the soundtrack. I did enjoy quake 4, but it was a let down esp coming from Raven who had a good track record. Still waiting for that Hexen remaster. I didnt like quake 3 but i prefer singleplayer games
I bought quake 3 as a kid to play the total conversion mod Urban Terror. a Hollywood tactical FPS with modern maps & guns with circle jumping from quake3. Many, many great hours spent playing that online. Cemented my love for the first person shooter.
"We're all old now and our wrists don't work" I love how I'm young enough to be part of the first generation of kids to grow up with the internet as a thing in every day life but still old enough to have enjoyed 90's games
Did anyone else notice the big thing he missed about Quake 2? You aren’t on future earth- you are partaking in the human’s retaliatory invasion of the Strogg’s home planet, Stroggos.
Slight technical correction: the Quake 1 level design verticality was not due to added mouse control for the player camera, but due to the fact that Quake 1 was the first FPS to be powered by an actual 3D-geometry rendering engine. The previously common technology used in Doom 1/2, Wolfenstein, etc was rendering based on a 2D (top-down) layout, combined with a heightmap which allows z-axis control over different points of the map.
As a quake1 speedrunner I can say q1 is the best. Even though I was mincing my classmates in q3 arena on the first time playing it I didn't find that as inspiring as speedrunning q1.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Quake4 was my intro...and I played it on all levels; loved every minute of it...still makes me jump today! lol Now, when are they going to make an updated version, i.e., Quake4 2.0 ??!!
Oh thats a good Comparison, ctr+F TDLR Quake 3 Arena vs Unreal Tournament. The release dates were not too far apart, and the life cycle is similar. (both can still be played to this day on pc.) Similar hardware requirements etc etc. I'd say Quake 3 Arena was more popular, but only slightly. These both games traded in sales numbers, popularity, tournaments etc. At some point quake's popularity died drastically when Unreal Tournament kept making sequals, and unreal tournament was at its peak. Quake 3 Team Arena did not do as well, cause basically it was a simple expansion pack that was never truly expanded upon again. Had amazing mod support though. Was much easier and user friendly to install mods on Quake 3 than Unreal Tournament. The anti-cheat stuff made Unreal Tournament modding a nuisance at times. There were other games pulled the rug under unreal tournament and quake 3. Quake 3 got adapted in to "real gaming", "competitive gaming" and now more known as "E-sports" much more so than unreal tournament. With games like Quake Live. pretty big deal. So this made it more popular than the unreal tournament series that we know now. I left out a ton of stuff, but. TLDR: Quake 3 Arena but only slightly due to circumstance. Hypothetically. If Bethesda were to do an Unreal Live next week. And announce a new Unreal Game with Campaign and Multiplayer, It would change everything. This is an question with an everchanging answer.
Quake III was still played by hundreds of thousands of players in 2009, 10 years after it came out. I was always more of a UT player though. I did play Q3 but found UT to be more fun and enjoyable, at least for me.
I'd answer: none. Both of them had a backing of an enormous hordes of fanboys. Each discussion about those games, back in my days, ended in a flame war on par with present time console fanboy wars (you know Xbox vs. PlayStation.) I loved both games, but personally preferred Unreal Tournament.
Quake 3 arena was the first FPS I ever played as a kid to this day still has special place in my heart. Very slept on game wish more people could enjoy
Quake 4 was a great game. I played through it at least 3 times in the first month I bought it. It looked amazing, the action was fluid and the difficulty was challenging enough to be fun and added replayability. The multiplayer sucked... but then so does every multiplayer if you're a Quake III player. I still don't understand the stick people gave Q4. It was the best FPS of the year and one of the best single player FPS games of the decade.
TheVanillatech yeah I agree, I played the demo when it came out and I was blown away, but then sadly I haven't got a full game when I was a teenager. I have it now on steam, but it's hard for me playing action games now, guess I became lazy. I can play like 30 minutes of Quake in 2 weeks or smth like that.
MurderMuffin If the game was good or not is purely subjective and personal. And it was a corridor shooter, which is basically what Quake 1 and 2 were ... so I don't get your first statement either! Care to explain?
oh god, i played commander keen endlessly during my childhood without knowing its name. and ive been playing quake 3 arena from 1995 to this day. the nostalgia.
Currently playing Quake 1 on Xbox One S via game pass And I would like to say initially I though the gameplay would be like Doom Where you run around shooting random enemies But this game will actually feel like your in a horror game , I’m using my Astro A50s and the game soundtrack is one of the most gut twisting horror sound tracks I’ve heard. Playing 2 levels back to back actually made my stomach turn upside down It is the soundtrack and the gameplay and the fear of something chasing you makes this game so great. I will continue playing hopefully they have more Quakes on game pass soon. I can only imagine how epic this game was back in the day when there really wasn’t the internet let alone something like this out.
Been playing Quake games since 96 and you know what? The _original_ Quake is still the one I enjoyed the most. Played some tonight as a matter of fact. All these new PUBG/BF/CoD games just end up boring me after a bit but classic Quake still is great fun even after all these years.
I played DC version recently out of curiosity.... ...... I mean, it's cool that it's on the system and that the game is there and all.... But lets just say it was better on PS2 and that should speak for itself.
I think the timeline is this: Quake 1: The Union Aerospace Corporation is secretly experimenting with Strogg Slipgate tech, but are attacked by a being codenamed "Quake" via "her children" in different times and dimensions. After using magical runes, the hero eliminates the threat. Quake 2,3,4,Wars: The Strogg invade but lose to humans trained in simulators like Quake 3 (explaining the colors and hit sounds). Doom: New portal experiments lead to a huge invasion of technically advanced demons. Fortunately, humanity has developed the BFG.
Yes. If hell didn't have cyborgs already, it would have after humans sent a lot of them there. Eldritch beings could be attracted to magic/high tech teleportation, perhaps due to such trespassing on their domain.
I wish we could go back in time and see the skill difference of the 90s shooter generation then and now. We were one of the most skillful gamer generations ever, nearly every game at that time being unforgiving, challenging, and very twitchy. Now we are in our thirties and probably slowed down quite a bit haha

Video game journalism has become a joke, youtubers are doing better job then these pretentious "game journalists".
I wish quake wars was still alive.
That game was the shit
I work at Splash Damage and I wish Quake Wars was still alive too :P
Quake Wars is still alive, there is a full servers and when TAW plays there are 2 full servers
Enemy territory quake wars was one of my fav fps games
indeed it was cool
worst game ever. rtcw, et and q3:cpm are the good ones
Picked it up a couple of months back, is actually really fun. I don't understand why people don't talk about it more often.
Enemy Territory was hands down my fav, loved transporting the gold truck! Btw it predated Overwatch by like 15 years
I wish they can remaster that
Quake Champions is a PC exclusive.
49 year old railgun addict reporting in.
well quake champions is out and I personally love it
It’s pretty dead, but gets developement
Quite good for a dead game to get 500k+ matches done in a week or so. Currently there's a community event where if we reach 1 million matches before November 1st everyone unlocks the new champion - Athena.
And those matches are in one game mode: Slipgate. I still play against bots and have no trouble getting 3 other players to play along with me against 4 bots.
Considering the number of game modes and that each mode still has players i would say QC is doing just fine. Obviously nothing like Fortnite or Overwatch but that is to be expected.
5:56 What? No way. Half-Life was powered by GoldSource, which was a heavily modified Quake 1 engine, not Quake 2.
Spoiler: Quake Champions is good
Amazing game sold the worst way possible.
Delivery of the platinum chip is non-negotiable. Now it's csgo kids :(
And offline mode so n00bs don't get rekt due to bad matchmaking.
Quake II took place on Stroggos, not Earth.
quake is back and it is real quake. With anarki and the promode movement it does NOT fall short on all hopes and dreams of a good quake player. It is NOT overwatch, does feel 100% real quake. And the action is pure suspense.
Duel a good clutch player, and get rushed and shield/laser beamed immediately off spawn and come back and say that 😂😂
I completely missed out on the Quake series while it was coming out, so I want to thank you guys for running down the history of this franchise. It was really interesting!
Quake 1 is the best Quake game,my opnion...
Indeed
TheFred128 I think so
TheFred128 yes it is bud and
agree with you there,
I loved how Quake 1 had a weird timeline mix of fantasy and sci fi, the dark gothic side stood out to me a lot more though. Because of that I could never get into Quake 2, the fact it was completely unrelated - I was hoping for some kind of classic reboot when I heard they were making a new Quake ;_;
RIP my dreams.
agreed.. especially with the CTF grappling hook :)
I'm a huge fan of the original, one of my favorite games. After playing Quake Champions (and continue playing it), I gotta say it plays just like a Quake game should and stays respectful to pretty much every Quake game, especially the original. Definitely worth playing, I think.
come on Danny! get to "The Point" already!
anyone who is still listening to the Quake 3 Arena Soundtracks? they're freaking awesome!!
I just want a modern Quake2, but will probly never get it...
I can basically guarantee that at least one person at id is trying to have Bitterman with Q2 movement released in QC. Maybe you can have that before Christmas.
play quake 4 and change your speed to something higher
i think pm_speed or pm_runspeed or something like that will change your speed?
It's REALLY fun at high speed
What do you mean by "modern"? FTE?
A Quake 2 remake would be absolutely amazing though Quake 2 itself is still amazingly fun.
There is a port called Quake 2 XP mod.
I've only ever played Quake 3, but that game was amazing. I was just a kid at the time with the demo version which was just 4 maps: Longest Yard, Temple of Retribution and a two other maps with preference difficulty bots. But I spent countless hours playing it, it was so much fun.
Quake 3 's graphics looks so smooth and slick, and damn good. even today!
I'm almost 20 now and I'm going to bulk my own pc and ironically there is a new quake comeing... hope that it's nothing like the last two tho... the multilayer was my thing and I was pretty good for a "child"
my mom been angry when she catches me wathing how my dad plays Q2 it was over 20 yrs ago xD
Quake 3 Arena is the game when I played when I was in collage (2003-2004). I still remember so many hours I have spent playing this game. Nostalgic is what I feel. Still the most memorable game ever played.
Definitely going to give the first Quake a shot soon.
It's definitely a classic and it's brutally difficult, even on easy.
Pul5ar
How hard it is compared to Doom?
***** The new Doom or the old Doom? I'd say the first episode isn't too bad, but it gets pretty heavy later on. This should give you a good idea of what it's like - ua-cam.com/video/cmiC8oYr4ik/v-deo.html
you won't regret! but play it how it it supposed, dark, don't bright up the graphics!
Pul5ar
Both. I've seen that review but I still find it hard to believe it's super hard. Quick saving should make things fairly even in terms of difficulty.
Dan's back with another solo video! Yes!
If they dont make the new Quake like Quake 3 Arena then its going to be hugely disappointing.
What about Quake Live?
It doesn't have to be exactly like it but it should still feel like that kind of arena shooter :P
I was hoping for a Quake single-player based on the setting of the first game. Bethesda can pull it off after the absolutely amazing single-player campaigns of the new Wolfenstein and Doom games.
but it still shall be as fast paste as u are used from quake
There is just too many hero ability based games out at the moment, however no real good arena fast pace game, only UT and Quake was the best at this for me Comander555666
Quake 4 was my first quake, and I loved it.
i need a quake 3 remaster
That's why Quake Live exists.
Ok sorry... "i need a quake live remaster"
just not that quake champions garbage....
thanks!
Isn't Quake Champions going to be the exact thing?
+BlueShit199 exactly same darn thing all over again!
Im so glad i was a 90's kid and a part of that era,you cant replace that!
Quake 2 and 4 were my all time favorites of the series and I really wish this new quake game would be more like them.
Mine too.
Agreed
My first FPS was Quake III, playing with friends on local LAN cafe, those were the days :')
'futuristic earth'
nope. Strogg homeworld.
At the time this video was made, Trent Reznor wasn't 9 inch nails's frontman, he was literally the whole band.
This reminds me of escape from mountain stupid (2nd best gaming series on UA-cam)
"We're all old now and our wrists don't work" I love how I'm young enough to be part of the first generation of kids to grow up with the internet as a thing in every day life but still old enough to have enjoyed 90's games
I used to play this when I was literally 4 years old with my dad, I forgot about it I just remembered the name lmao
Did anyone else notice the big thing he missed about Quake 2?
You aren’t on future earth- you are partaking in the human’s retaliatory invasion of the Strogg’s home planet, Stroggos.
quake champions is the same multiplayer game just with special abilities i like it
Quake II was the most nostalgic and memorable of the series for me. Still remember playing it on PS1 back in the day.
Awesome video
Minor but important correction: Quake2 was by far slower than Quake1 in multiplayer
Exactly! If speed is the the meter, then Q1 is a king.
Q1>Q3cpma>Q3V>Q2
quakeworld > *
netquake was slow
Add to that the many small deathmatch maps and instagib mod. Too fast for me, but more fun than serious Unreal Tournament maps that dwarf the players.
There's so much incorrect information in this video I almost punched through my monitor.
elaborate
@@onememerboi1618 he did
Excellent video! I played almost all of Quake games and only passed Quake 4 two times and all of these games were excellent!
Quake Champions is amazing !
This comment aged very poorly.
@@thiagovidal6137 come at me bro !
Quake 2 and 4 forever my favourite.Still hoping for proper sequel
personally I would prefer a single player game
I dont get why they can't do both, it's been done before
As a quake1 speedrunner I can say q1 is the best. Even though I was mincing my classmates in q3 arena on the first time playing it I didn't find that as inspiring as speedrunning q1.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Quake4 was my intro...and I played it on all levels; loved every minute of it...still makes me jump today! lol
Now, when are they going to make an updated version, i.e., Quake4 2.0 ??!!
Quake 1 (including the EP's) and 2 had a kickass soundtrack.
Which was more popular Unreal Tournament or Quake Arena?
i more play unreal tournament since I was introduced it by my bro in the early mid 2000
Oh thats a good Comparison, ctr+F TDLR
Quake 3 Arena vs Unreal Tournament.
I prefer Unreal tournent. UT2004 is one of the best games eva
Very slept on game wish more people could enjoy
tbf it wasn't Quake 4 borrowing Doom 3's gameplay. It was Doom 3 borrowing Quake gameplay + adding horror element.
Doom 3 is as far as you can get from Quake gameplay, and it was shit
MurderMuffin
If the game was good or not is purely subjective and personal. And it was a corridor shooter, which is basically what Quake 1 and 2 were ... so I don't get your first statement either!
Care to explain?
MurderMuffin not really, play BFG Edition and you'll see. Tight corridors and rare monsters, unlike first two DOOM games, Quake was the same.
Thank you GameSpot did used my Quake 4 Multiplayer gameplay video.
kindest regards
Butcher
《《《From Hungary.》》》
quake live.....??????
Yeah he did sloppy lazy research for this video
Action Quake II was so simple yet so amazing.. Had quite the community too.
favorite quake 2
oh god, i played commander keen endlessly during my childhood without knowing its name. and ive been playing quake 3 arena from 1995 to this day. the nostalgia.
oh boy does Champions feel like Quake 100%!
It's Quake through and through.
Currently playing Quake 1 on Xbox One S via game pass
And I would like to say initially I though the gameplay would be like Doom
Where you run around shooting random enemies
But this game will actually feel like your in a horror game , I’m using my Astro A50s and the game soundtrack is one of the most gut twisting horror sound tracks I’ve heard.
Playing 2 levels back to back actually made my stomach turn upside down
It is the soundtrack and the gameplay and the fear of something chasing you makes this game so great.
I will continue playing hopefully they have more Quakes on game pass soon.
I can only imagine how epic this game was back in the day when there really wasn’t the internet let alone something like this out.
Yep, quake was a good game
Been playing Quake games since 96 and you know what? The _original_ Quake is still the one I enjoyed the most. Played some tonight as a matter of fact. All these new PUBG/BF/CoD games just end up boring me after a bit but classic Quake still is great fun even after all these years.
Quake 4 was actually amazing...
If you ever play sp again I recommend installing the G T X mod which makes all models look better, and also self shadows.
Quake Arena Arcade was one of my favorite games when it came out. So happy to see the franchise return.
PC vs Dreamcast players in Quake III was like the Robertsons vs the ducks.
*As easy as stepping on babies.....* XD
I played DC version recently out of curiosity.... ...... I mean, it's cool that it's on the system and that the game is there and all.... But lets just say it was better on PS2 and that should speak for itself.
Behold as Quake goes from a series of intricately designed lovecraftian levels and enemies to a series obsessed with the Strogg and the Arena.
A real full history of Quake would be hours ;)
I think the timeline is this:
Quake 1: The Union Aerospace Corporation is secretly experimenting with Strogg Slipgate tech, but are attacked by a being codenamed "Quake" via "her children" in different times and dimensions.
My very first PC game was Quake 2
Quake Chumpions
Quake Champiñons
Quake Πρωταθλητες
Skjálfti Sigurvegarar

I wish we could go back in time and see the skill difference of the 90s shooter generation then and now. We were one of the most skillful gamer generations ever, nearly every game at that time being unforgiving, challenging, and very twitchy. Now we are in our thirties and probably slowed down quite a bit haha
the quake 4 marketing was so bad I didn't even know that it existed until like a year ago and I was a *massive** quake fan.
did you know quake wars existed and was amazing?
I loved Quake 3 arena played for many years after it came out and thanks for the history of the Quake brings back good memories
Wow, so it's pronounced 'stroge'? I've always pronounced it as 'strawg'..
Same 😒.
