Scrapped Fancy Extended K-Car Survivor? 1987 Turbo Charged Chrysler New Yorker Junkyard Find

  • Today I visited one if those yards that I don't often check out as it's out of my way. And even though it's a pretty small junkyard, it sometimes gets some cool or interesting rides. This time while there was a very neat odd ball of a Lincoln which I made a video of, there was also this very well taken care of 1987 Chrysler New Yorker that unfortunately will ultimately meet the crusher eventually. Since I'm not very familiar with Chrysler products, especially of the 1980s, I thought this was a K car but instead it's actually an extended K-Car as it is on the E for extended platform. This was as also Turbo Charged as well. But man that interior was super nice at it still smelled good too. Dare I call this a survivor. Not sure how many miles it had when it was junked but going by a repair sheet from 2012, it only had 41k miles at the time. Anyhow, I thought I'd get a quick video on this one as it was too nice not too.

Would take this in a heartbeat to restore this from a person who owns a 1986 Dodge 600 & a 1988 Dodge Aries both running strong after 30 plus years...just like em....

Why is this car even in the junkyard?? It's in amazing condition. I remember these cars well and i know i'm going to take alot of heat but i really loved them. They were appointed really beautiful on the inside and got great gas mileage. I know the quality wasn't that good but still. That car should have been saved. Even if the engine or transmission was blown, the mileage was low and worth saving. I hate seeing shit like this when people discard beautiful cars. Thank you for previewing it.

Headgaskets usually kill these. People "Get them repaired," but they rarely do the proper fix. Proper fix? Yes- Cometic MLS head gasket, has the head fully done and new head bolts or stud kit. Do that and they won't blow out...
Another thing? The Halls effect pick up on the distributor. Use the Mopar part only. No aftearket version will hold up

We had a dodge lancer es turbo same colors in and out but daytona sport suspension package, loved it. Usually every 40 -70k miles the heads crack in the valve seat or valves get pitted and/or head gasket pops, the head must be machined to fix it. if its properly idled on/off running times the turbo can last a while but the auto trans do tend to go bad after 100k getting parts for it may be hard. This is a nice car to fix if someone had the time for the work and to find the parts. Loved the digital dash these cars had, I would pull that as a core to sell -they are almost unobtainable now. This one should be saved or go on a movie or tv location lot for filming, it's clean enough to pass for new one. They could rival a v8 in their day on the road and the front drive rode smooth but in snow, it was real close to awd wagon for traction and had great fuel economy.

I hope someone sees this and saves it. I don’t see any reason it can’t be put back on the road especially with the low mileage. I don’t know why people these days don’t want to drive anything over five years old anymore a lot of my family included but not me I’m just the opposite the odd ball I guess.

Never had one of these, but I did own an '89 Caravan Turbo. 2.5, SE. Owner sold it to me for $500, thought the head gasket was bad- nope, was the spark plug wire ends (which were the distributor cap contacts for the rotor) burned away. I did do a head gasket about 10k miles later; Cometic/"Mopar Performance" MLS gasket, ARP bolts, we machined the head fully (w/a little gasket matching, a cam from an FFV engine & better springs), and installed a Shelby intake that had FFV injectors, an '87 3L throttle body, and gasket matched to the head.
For a turbo, we used a Garrett T3 off a "Turbo II" TC convertible, an intercooler from a Volvo 740, and a 1st generation DSM blow-off valve. Exhaust was a full 3" from the swing-valve back, had a truck cat, a resonator and a dual stainless tip.
Discs & front suspension were from a '92 Grand Caravan, poly bushings on the cast LCAs' & swaybar. In the back I used a swaybar tube. Konis all the way around, Shelby 15" × 7" wheels and 60-series rubber.
The transaxle was a A-413 that was built picking best bits from various years and had a LD limited slip.
When I got rid of it, that thing had 309+k miles on it

Whoa Nelley, E car and not going very far.
Yes, this is a "Sperlich Special" in that it's made on the extended (E car) K car chassis. Hal Sperlich came over to Chrysler from Ford as did Lee Iacocca and together they put ideas in place at Chrysler (such as the minivan) which Ford wouldn't allow.
We got the VIN, we win: 1C3 for US made Chrysler passenger car, B for manual seat belts, T for New Yorker, 5 for Premium price class, 6 for four door sedan, E for 2.2L four cylinder with turbo and fuel injection, aka "Turbo I", 7 is a check digit, H for the 1987 model year, C for Jefferson Ave, Detroit, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. This vehicle was assembled at the original Jefferson plant which operated from 1925 to 1990. In 1991, the "new" Jefferson Ave plant opened up adjacent to the old one and this plant is still in operation today. The original plant was a Chalmers Motors plant started in 1908 and eventually taken over by what was then Chrysler Corporation. MDH means Month-Date-Hour and this one was assembled on Friday, August 1, 1986 at the 12th hour of the day. (around noon). Yes, teeth up on a Chrysler and (generally) teeth down on a GM. Fords are typically double sided.
We got the tag, we can brag: APA for monotone exterior paint, HAB for automatic AC and temperature control, HAA for AC equipped, MDA for front license plate attachment screws, CKP for trunk dress up, CBD for active (manual) head restraints, CUN for overhead console, EDG for 2.2L Turbo I engine with fuel injection, GAC for tinted glass windows, GFA for rear window defroster, LMB for halogen headlamps, U for USA spec vehicle, LRC for lower bodyside cladding, LMC for daylight opening moldings, E2 for Light Rosewood exterior paint, TBC for compact spare tire, LPE8 for Vintage Red Sunfire leather interior trim, 805 is likely August 5, 1986 shipping date which was a Tuesday, END for end of sales/production codes, among other codes.
Whoa Nelley, K car on the stretch for some it makes you want to wretch. E car was a nice Reliant automobile, but this was scrapped, and you know the deal. That's it, time to quit. Rich Corinthian leather hasn't been exposed to too much weather. 2.2 and it's over for you. Oil burner, and never really a head turner. Going to be flat and that's that. Painted Rosewood and it ain't no good. The "Jeffersons" were movin' on up to the east side, but for this one, you can't save its' hide. MOPAR not going very far. Going to get squished and some of the Pentastar faithful, I don't think Benny, but many here, and probably not the Google Man are going to be just a little bit pissed.

As a collector of K car variants (mainly Shadows) it's really a shame people junk these because they *look* old. They are incredibly easy to get running again if you know your way around them. My J body Lebaron gets 29 MPG highway and is a blast to row through the gears.
Also, if you are willing to go back, I would love to get ahold of:
    - The radio
    - front and rear ornaments
    - mud flaps
    - digital dash and voice alert if equipped (voice alert should be a box behind the glove box on these cars)

I'm pretty certain that 8 of 86 makes it a very early production model. The serial number being the 367th Chrysler built for the 1987 Model year......According to my Chrysler Book, the last six digits 100001 start sequentially so this car is the 367th Chrysler for 1987 build! It's probably built on the first day of Production for the Model year.

Cluster's worth about $300, the plastic dash face if it will come off without breaking is worth some money, that overhead console would probably sell also, it's rare. Steering wheel, too, it's different from most Mopar wheels that era and I sold a nice example of the common one for $75. Radio might be $50-$75, it fits a ton of other Mopars.
That car is in nice shape, I would almost hate to tear it apart. It's not like the Lebaron convertible here, that once they set it up on stands you couldn't close the doors anymore.
    Gee no look underneath? lol
Am amazed the hood ornament is still there.

My dad had an 84 K car New Yorker. Unfortunately it was equipped with the Mitsubishi 2.6L 4cyl “Hemi”. Don’t know how it got that knick name because that car was so gutless you had to turn the A/C off if you were going up a long hill. It would have been nice if it had this one’s 2.2L turbo. It also had the electronic talking dash which was annoying. All that aside, it did ride remarkably well for such a small car in the mid 1980s.

Not really into 80's Mopars, but it is kind of stupid this is in a junkyard. I bet if you got a battery, threw the wheels back on & put fresh gas in it, that car would drive out of the yard under its own power. The previous owner obviously loved that car & garaged it its whole life and probably only recently died & their decendants made a poor decision. I bet they never even tried to sell it. I worked for a trash company as a truck mechanic for 12 years. Very often, we would get 40 or 50 cubic yard open top containers in that we all called "clean out load specials" They basically contained the entire life of "grandma & grandpa" Most times the contents were even neatly stacked. You would be amazed at what stupid children & grandchildren throw out as junk. Those loads were so desirable that fights almost broke out between employees a few times clambering to get to the goodies. Keep in mind this was 20 years ago and doing what we did then today by salvaging the great stuff is considered theft and would get you fired immediately and possibly arrested & prosecuted if you git caught.

You know who would've saved this car? Auto Auction Rebuilds, Monkey Wrench Mike, Dylan McCool, and Adventures Made from Scratch.
What an absolute *WASTE* of a car! This could've been in Stranger Things!!!
Sounds like Kelly wanted to drive her mom's POS BMW x5 instead of her grandparent's mint New Yorker to go to Texas University eh?
The yard was too stupid to not have made a decision to even try to sell it! Bet the wheels and tires were mint as well!

That's not the new Yorker I like but that interior is really nice shape..I would not mind restoring that one to the road I'd try buy that one from the yard and it's a turbo model too.thoes things rode better than a caddie..

Not quite. This was still a K car underneath. You can't compare this to a Cadillac, even a front wheel drive of that vintage.

Even though I am not a fan of these cars, this is obviously a total waste. Like someone could not have fixed whatever it needed and driven it around? I don't understand why people want to have car payments just to have a new (and super expensive) car when you could drive this and have NO car payments. You could have it as a second car and just use it to go shopping or drive around town. You don't have to go on long trips in it. Someone junked it because it was old, and they could only sell it for $1000, so it wasn't worth it to them. It's dumb.

If a Joe Biden car were to be from the 80s, it would be a Chevette or a Citation! Joe Biden is such a soft boy of GM CEO (clown) Mary Barra. He thinks GM is the leader the EV world! Ha! What a joke! Biden probably doesn't know that Tesla or Ford are car companies too lol
