  • Survivor 1978 Chrysler Cordoba Auction Find. This rare Mopar 78 Cordoba isn't the pretty thing out there but they sure are not common. In my time making UA-cam videos, I have never seen one in the junkyards. This one popped up at a local auction so I had to check it out. It has really held up well. Looks like it was covered for most of its life. While I don't think it fetched a whole lot of money, it at least will its new owner a nice survivor to enjoy. This one had a 360 under the hood with a nice interior and solid undercarriage.

Whoa Nelley, it's a Cordoba and it's going to be "passed over". These were heaps from the day that that they rolled out of the factory and helped to lead Chrysler Corporation straight to bankruptcy in 1979. As I recall, when Iacocca took over in 1979 from John Riccardo, the first thing he did was get rid of Chrysler's production methods/scheduling. Chrysler would manufacture cars and then "push" them to inventory whether the dealer or customer wanted it or not. This led to months of inventory on hand when Chrysler could least afford to do so. I think that's "Carriage Chrysler" which may have been in Delaware, OH at one time if it's the same dealership. One of the reasons that the US bailed out Chrysler was that they had military contracts for tanks at the time and letting them go out of business was thought to be a national security issue, so they were granted loans. To their credit, Chrysler "recovered" and paid them back I believe ahead of time. Iacocca worked for Ford under Henry Ford II aka "the Deuce" who didn't really like him and fired him. Iacocca got the last laugh as he sailed to victory at Chrysler.
We got the VIN, we win: S for Chrysler Cordoba, S for Special Price Class, 22 for two door special coupe, K for 360 V8 with 2 barrel, 8 for 1978 model year, R for Windsor, Ontario Canada assembly (which later on would become a pretty much dedicated minivan plant), and the rest is the production sequence. MDH at 082221 means 8/22/77 production at the 21st hour. This was a Monday. I believe this car was parked under a barn covering or carport as you said. Wherever it was, the grass was cut recently and splattered on the bumper and hood.
Possible code EW1 Spinnaker White exterior paint. I believe the way those electric locks worked, you pushed up and down on one lock and the other side would lock or unlock. They did not have a switch like a GM or Ford of that era did. Yuck, Lean Burn system. That would also be the next thing to go. They were garbage and hooked up to either Holley or Carter carburetion of the era, that put you two strikes into the game already. Add the way that a '78 Chrysler handled (like a sack of potatoes) and you were three strikes. Not my cup of tea at all. Typical Chrysler cheapness for the era.
Whoa Nelley, 3-6-0 and time to go. Fine Corinthian leather put you under the weather. Lean Burn, you had your turn. Sitting since '85, took a nose dive. On the auction block, time's up on the clock. Possibly going to be flat and that's that. Might get squished, not really too pissed.

I disagree with you completely. My uncle had a burgundy 79 and it was a lovely car and nice to ride in. He was a salesman and considered it a modern business coupe.
I will concede two points. The lean burn with it's primitive electronics was known to fail. Also I could do without the window pane headlamps. Aside from that a winner good enough to compete with Riviera or cougar. Later, Google man.

The 80 model Cordoba I had did not run like the 78 because it was a 318 and it still had the pollution control garbage on it. It also developed electronic problems.

@@aarongranda7825 Sure we can agree to disagree, that's fine. But sales figures don't lie. The GM midsize cars that this competed with outsold, out lasted and out handled and out ran these heaps. Ride in a Cutlass from that era and it rides as good if not better than a Chrysler product. They handled poorly, they were bloated, outdated and suffered from Chrysler's lack of quality (not that the other Big 3 didn't have their problems, they sure did) and were just awful all over. The hottest stolen car was the GM A and G body for years. You could leave a Cordoba on the street with a pile of cash in it and the keys in the ignition. No one was stealing it. LOL.
We had Chryslers in my family through 1979 (the last one was a '74 Charger), but by the late 70s, Chrysler was awful and outdated, so we went to GM. That's what we've had for 40+ years, although my next car may not be a GM product.....

@@garymckee8857 The '80 Cordoba was a gussied up Volare/Aspen chassis on the whole. The Aspen and Volare were based on the Dart/Duster platform that preceded it from what I remember. Awful. Mechanically, the Slant 6 and Chrysler V8s were pretty good, but the carburetion, emission controls and everything hooked up to it was awful. In fact, Chrysler had to buy their catalytic converters from GM in the early days from what I remember. You can bet the General charged them a premium.

I had a poop brown 78 in high school back in the early 90s. Bought it from its original elderly lady owner for a whopping $500 bucks. She had just put 4 new tires, a battery and had the AC serviced before she sold it to me. I thought the car was ugly...but it drove well, had decent power and got good mileage. I’d have another if I could find one.

Man, if this had the 300 package, it's a no brainer to bid on one especially in this condition.
But with the perfect dash, nonrotted top, and a solid car minus the trunk is a very tempting car to consider. It's way too nice for a yard and I hope you don't see it in the yards Benny. It'll be a waste to see it parted out. Also the 8 track that's in it is mint!

The 360 is a good engine, its performance was MUCH better than the 400, at least in base form and gas mileage was better. I've only had one of those Lean Burn computers quit on me, that was my 83 Cordoba in 1989. My dad currently has two 79's one is a 318 survivor with 43k miles and a 360 with over 100k, both still have their original Lean Burn computers and start and run just fine.

Well,I can guess why the fuel tank is out. It's where it is instead of the trunk to show it exists. My guess, the car was under a tarp the whole time. A tarp that didn't let any light through and parked on a solid, paved surface. Maybe with the wheels off the ground. Definitely a worthwhile project.

They tell me the Cordobas will destroy two Montes & Cutlass for desert. I believe it as I have a 77 Fury same basic car that I drag race & the bracing I had to remove to get it light enough to race was amazing. Tail lights are fairly easy to find. I agree that over all, it's not in bad shape. 1 thing that bothers me is that headliner. That's a fiberglass weaved molded piece. If it sagged, that means it's gotten wet over and over again, and that means water is getting through the roof wrap over trim. Rear window leaks are also common on these cars, which tends to rot out everything. The tail light lenses probably fell off. Chrysler used a 'dumb gum' sealant to glue them to the housings. Over time, that stuff dies out and there you are missing a lense. Very common. So is the deck lid rust. The K code 360 only produced about 155hp, so I'm willing to bet that's got a 904 trans, and explains the dinky 8 1/4 rear end. The power lock stalk/button was the switch btw. You pushed lightly down to lock and pulled lightly up to unlock both doors, from either side. Keys in the door lock would mechanically override 1 side at a time.

@@garymckee8857 Yikes, points, that's a step backward. The thing to do is get a system from a non-lean burn electronic ignition car and do away with that rotten Lean Burn. In 1981-1983, Chrysler dealers would "de-smog/de-computerize" many Imperials of that vintage back to carburetors since the fuel injection system was unreliable. Contributing to the issue was that many dealers at the time didn't have mechanics that knew or understood the system well enough.

@@garymckee8857 From what I've read, you didn't seem to keep your vehicles that long (and you seem to have had a lot of them), so I guess in that respect, it didn't matter. If it were me, it would have electronic ignition, no points. They are a PITA.

This era of cars still aren't very sought after, so I guess it would be a Point A to B car even to this day.. maybe just for a small bit of nostalgia, but I don't think the next owner would be cussed at for driving it being over 25 years old. That interior is REMARKABLE though!

In before someone says "fine Corinthian leather" in a terrible accent
Those are somewhat desirable as demo cars, if nothing else. Guy won the state championship here with one... wow probably 15 years ago now.
But I also watched a guy on another channel take one of these, bone stock, and do a burnout until he damn near blew the tires, they were down to the cords and had been brand new. They seem like they'd be a fun toy.
Dealer is Carriage, like a horse and carriage.
Taillights aren't hard to find on eBay. The gas tank might be another story. When I was picking the stash the cleanout guy at the flea market had, he had a couple three sets of them and I didn't even buy them to flip. I did sell a couple of those radios though, easy $75 or so.
The way the rust is heavier on the bottom of the diff tells me it sat in a garage for a long time.
I think you could flip that and make some money on it, particularly if it will run.
