I used to tear apart coaster brakes all day long. They’re pretty simple to work on, but can be a pain in the keester to adjust. Not working great out of the box is not a new issue for them. As a kid after school, I used to do basic assembly of bikes. One of my jobs was to adjust the coaster brake bikes so the brake at least worked halfway decent. The least bit of grease in the wrong spot, and it ain’t working no matter what. You can stand on the crank arm and it ain’t stopping.
I have an old Huffy Blades from the 90s that I used to ride 22 miles every Friday in a very small town I grew up in. Friends and family of friends used to know me for that and I'd get waves and honks as they drove by. I eventually upgraded to an expensive Trek road bike and moved 1300 miles away but that Huffy stayed in my parents garage. Recently I went home to visit and took the old Huffy back with me and called my bike shop asking if they could fix it up they said no problem. I brought it by and they refused and said I needed to buy a new bike. I was disappointed. I wish there was a bike shop like Shoals near me or if there is I need to find it. I dont think this bike should be thrown out yet still has some life left in it. The gears still work 100% the pedals are solid metal, the frame is still good. Needs brakes and tires and a new seat bad though. Took it for a 8 mile ride today and felt great minus the hard seat. Been trying to work on it myself, lots to learn. Thanks for the video glad to see some Huffys are worth riding still. I'm no bike snob just love riding bikes in general.
I bought one a few years ago, and so far the coaster brake is fine. However, if you don’t know much about working on bikes, you will learn a lot. I’ve had to adjust and/or lubricate almost every part on this bicycle. (Except the brake) It’s like riding on a cloud, I love it.

Funny, I recently bought the same bike 3 days ago from Walmart and it has the exact same brake problem! By the way it’s price is now $148!! Thanks for explaining the root of the problem. I went to Walmart to today to exchange it for a new one. It was a pain because the long line to get into the store since they are limiting the number of customers due to the Coronavirus. I made sure to test the brakes, I am now a happy owner of a perfectly working 26” Nel Lusso!
Kevin Arias I have been riding it every other day and so far it had been holding up really well! The brakes work well enough. I can stop fairly quick. I don’t feel like I am in any danger when braking. It’s a great bike with a great aesthetic for less than $150!
@@element0ne great shape but brakes work pretty good. I was actually looking to see if I can just add my on pad brake just to help. That's how I ended up on UA-cam lol.
Apparently, nothing you get at Walmart is very good. I have an old Huffy frame from the '70's, and I built the rear wheel using a New Departure hub. Stops on a dime. Problem solved already. They don't make 'em as good as they used to. Lol.
I bought a red Cranbrook a little while back and........bent rear wheel ( like truly bent not just out of true) the rear cross member that the fender connects to was welded in crooked so forget ever putting rear caliper brakes on. Both pedals came off ( at separate times) while riding due to being badly cross threaded into the crank making it impossible to re install the pedals because of the badly damaged threads on both cranks and pedals. And lastly, the chain would go from loose to tight while peddling. ?? Like as your turn the pedals the chain starts getting looser and looser then becoming tighter until it hits a spot where it’s really too tight then suddenly starts getting loose again....? Of course I returned it and actually got another Cranbrook, a beautiful dark blue one, but this time I looked it over good before we left the store! Hopefully I’ll have better luck this time!
It's about how much you put in brakes, you have to know what you're doing! If you don't or have tools to work on a bicycle visit your local bicycle shop!
I bought a Kent Cruiser bike looks just like the Huffy Cranbrook Perfect Frame bike or this one! But I have an issue idk if I should buy a new bike or fix this one. But for some reason mine breaks amazingly like instantly. But now it locks up when I stop pedaling. If I can get it going it will keep going, but everytime I stop pedaling the pedal and chain kinda locks up it wont go back or forth I gotta hit it til it unlocks idk what is happening
My brakes didn't work the best at 1st but I used it a lot cause it seems to be a issue with the new brake pads need to be broken in. My brakes went from only slowing me down, to braking so good that my wheel locks up. If I shift my body back enough, I can stop on a dime, for the most part. I plan to add a front brake for in case my chain breaks and I did check my welds like you said. Thanks for the video and I thought I would tell you about my experience with the brake pads. I was going to return mine but with the brakes working now, I love the bike. It's definitely a workout going uphill but I am planning on making it harder by putting a smaller rear cog on so I can go faster but I am going to wait a year so my legs build up for the change. I don't have to many hills anyways, so the gear change will basically be for higher top speed and I can change it back easily if it's to hard. I love the rear rack on the bike and it's the best rear rack I ever had. That's what sold me on the bike, and the fact that I no longer have to mess with shifters and derailleur. I just get on and ride. I did a bike check and I had to replace my tubes after the 1st ride cause the next day they were flat. I looked at the wheels and nothing poked them but they have a hole in the same area on both tubes. I put 2 old tubes from a past bike and I rode about 50 miles so far, without anymore flats. They were probably cheap tubes. I put on whatever a old Kmart bike tubes that came stock and they are working out. The tires seem to just barely fit the wheels cause they go on to easily and will pop off easy if you don't have the tires centered. I guess that's cause it's a cheaper wire tires. I only dealt with tight folding tires. I like the tire color, so I guess I will just deal with that. This is the cheapest bike I ever had but my most expensive bike was only $230, so that's not saying much. This is my favorite bike out of my past bikes cause it is simple and easy to work on and I don't have to full with shifting, which I seem to have more fun now. I am in my 30's so I wanted a bike where I can sit up rite and this hits everything I could want.
David Morawsky - I'm thinking about buying a Nel Lusso for exercise. I watched the video and was concerned about the part where the bike shop repair guy said to check the weld where the seat tube met the bottom bracket. I don't weld so how do you know if the weld is good? Are you looking for visible cracks where the weld has broken? And how long should a person wait before they decide the coaster break is past the break in period and just doesn't work?
@@donmiller2908 well I just looked for cracks and I got on the bike and kinda jumped on the bike and I didn't see anything bad looking. As far as the brakes, I rode it for 2 days but I hit the brakes a lot and now my back tire skids when I put my weight going backwards on the pedals. I would recommend getting the insurance on the bike so if something breaks, you can get your money back. If you don't know how to look the bike over to make sure everything is tight and not to tight, I would recommend taking it to a bike shop and have them look it over or just buy it not assembled and have a bike shop put it together. A good bike shop will check the welds for you. You could probably still get bad brakes but from what I was reading, most people did like me and used the brakes a lot and it seems to work like brakes should after a while. If your concerned about lack of knowledge on bikes, I would recommend to stay away from Walmart bikes. I had to adjust everything on my bike cause Walmart sucks at assembly. I love this bike and I recommend the bike but only if you know what you are doing on a bike. It's just like what he said in the video, he really should have a helmet on while riding a Walmart bike. Lol. I got a bad bike from a bike shop one time though, so I learned to look a bike over and what to look for. A crack in the weld can sometimes have movement but you have to really grab the 2 peices and try to move them away from each other. If they don't move, it could still be a bad weld but it is another way to check it. The correct way is to grind the weld down to the joint and look for separation in the joint. If you grind the weld, it will void the warranty though. I would just take it to a bike shop since you don't know though. Look for a bike shop in your area and look for reviews on the bike shop to make sure it's a good one and make sure the bike shop will touch a Walmart bike before you buy it. That's my best advice.
@@donmiller2908 I was looking at a few forums and it seems like the newer model with the black seat seems to have different brake pads. The older one in this video has a cream colored seat. That's probably why my brakes worked better after breaking them in. I have the newer model with the black seat. The rear rack doesn't extend like the older model as well. From what I can see, that's the only differences. I would still be cautious and really look the bike over. The welds still seem to be good or bad, depending on the bike and I wouldn't go down any hills until you know the brakes work. It is a good bike and I love mine but that's only if you get a good one and make sure you look over the bike or take it to a shop.
@@donmiller2908 they do have a lifetime guarantee on the frame if that is your biggest concern. My left pedal fell off, but they replaced it and working fine since.
I put one of those motors on an old Huffy Scout Mountain bike. I never intended to use it as an off road bike, but I did ride it on a groomed gravel trail that went through the woods. A friend of mine said it sounded like I was cutting down the tress with a chainsaw. It was a fun project. The problem I ran into was that the motors and kits are Chinese made and the quality showed it. I spent more time repairing and upgrading the motor than actually riding it. I ended up selling the bike and installed motor for $100 to a kid who was determined to ride it to work. I kind of wish I still had it.
My coaster brake failed after 4 years. The whole time this bike was converted to 1000w 48v electric. Now i have hydraulic disc brakes its a completely different bike. I'm 5'9" 225lbs this frame is a little small for me. Had to switch to solid foam tires. Drove the bike right out of the bead on the red tires.
I have this bike & I can honestly say its perfect! The welding is great & the coaster brake works just fine. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones on that one. It's a great ride & very smooth too. Ya take care of your wheels, they'll take care of you. Myself, no problems here. I also have me a mountain bike so I can navigate hills easier too. But for the most part I love & ride my cruiser bike more often times than not. And the frame itself is pretty heavy & solid making for an even better ride. Love this bike & I love to ride!
@kevecentral i don't recommend buying the whole engine kit as the gear that they gave me was partially bent which i had a problem with the chain failing off until i beat the gear flat with a hammer and also the chain tension-er is cheap and is dangerous best if you buy the parts separately.
I put a 2cycle kit on mine in 2016 . still riding it . it melted the tires 2 the tube. I had to get noby mountain tires. & that basket will break & lock up the front tire.
I bought one of these in June 2018, and it has a couple changes from yours. (1) My handlebars are black, not chrome. (2) My coaster brakes work fine (but I assembled my bike, so maybe that's the reason). Two big problems I experienced are (1) the plastic pedals cracked after one week, and (2) it feels like the bearings holding the pedal cranks are bad--they click with every stroke.
My best friend bought a pre-assembled one in July. About 2 weeks later, the threading of right pedal and right side of the crank arm completely stripped out of nowhere, and we had to order replacement parts since he had lost the receipt to take it back to Walmart. Luckily, if you get on the Huffy website and order new parts, most of them are free (with free shipping) and covered under their warranty. When we were trying to order the new parts, we actually ended up with a new set of bearings on accident as well as the other pieces we needed. So they've definitely got them if you need them. It's an easy fix.
To commute around town, I trust my bmx, I can bunnyhop up curbs, ride down stairs, and get air off almost every bump, It is just an enjoyable experience
Does anyone know the Back Brake Hub specifications so I can buy part to fix the brake issues I have (only after riding it maybe 10 times) - the brake shoes don't stay in the brake cone, they slide together & jam the hub so the wheel won't turn. Huffy customer service stated that they don't sell the hub & or hub part & don't know the specs & won't state the manufacturer. thx
I turned one of these into a 4 stroke 49cc cruiser. Yours looks so much nicer. The seat is different and more pin striping. I hope that's the only cost they cut on mine😵. It looks so nice compared to the Cranbrook but yea the brakes suck.
I wanted to get a Huffy Nel Lusso and put a BikeBerry gas engine on it .. but then come to find out here in Florida it is illegal to have a gas bike on the roads... dang that shot my dream project down the drain . Ed frowns . I wanted to put a Flying Horse on it. geeze. Thank you for the video.
Well I did find out I can put a BikeBerry Flying Horse on it. all I have to do is have a DL and get the bike registered with the DMV and get a plate for it. Simple enough. So I will get the Nel Lusso this week and keep it for my Moped project.
You should buy that diamondback topganda that was at the bike shop. It comes equipped with a shimano altus rear derailleur and a 100mm sr suntour fork. I personally think it's a great trail bike. I used to ride one before I got my diamondback hook and I thought it was a great trail bike. It also handles small jumps very well.
Honestly, just get it swapped out with a nice old Bendix red band. Mine started slipping while pedaling and braking. A friend of mine had the same issue. The flange is the same size. The bike works perfectly since I put in an old Bendix. The old Fitchell and Sachs hubs might be the same size too. Beware of these Huffy hubs!
I've called for warranty with other Walmart bikes. They ask for pictures and receipt. You get your parts in about a week. But great video and good info
I welded a go cart motor on an old steel walfart bike and just mashed the centrifugal clutch up against the rear tire. I can't believe that junk worked. It got up to 37 mph before it would top out.
I own a Huffy Nel Lusso. Same colors and tires as on a 1905 Harley Davidson. No way I'm getting rid of it, even though it's a reproduction of an old bike.
Walmart bicycle's are dangerous, especially if you are riding on a road with cars. I got tired of not being able to buy a quality cruiser bicycle, so I finally just broke down and restored a Chicago made Schwinn.
ATENTION: i have a motorised bike and its not worth it, on mine the rear sprocket riped the spokes out of the back wheel and after a while it became too high maintenance and started to cost way to much, just letting you know!
All the Falcon coaster breaks suck. You will never find one that will lock up the back tire. You need an old Shimano for that. They don't make 'em like they used to. Probably liability issues
The bike shop mentioned the old Shimano. I would think not being able to stop would be more of a liability than locking up the back tire. At least from my perspective :)
Just a HUGE tip, don’t waste your money on a cheap motor kit they will not last what so ever. I’d take a look at bikeberry.com they have wonderful quality kits
+Colby Walton thanks for the tip. I’ve already purchased a cheap kit to play with, but I’ve also had my eye on one of the bikeberry friction kits for future plans.
Please try and do follow ups that actually have some sort of resolution and describe what is the actual problem with the bike. This video drifted into a entire different theme. Study the issues in regards to how do you actually repair a coaster brake because this is not rocket science and a set of tools can resolve so much for dirt cheap. All bikes require adjustments and that's just the nature of the beast. Your uploading content for subject matter that you have not studied and its too opinionated with your comments. Seths bike hacks is pure entertainment for teenagers but your doing reviews of machines without supporting the facts of why dosent it work. These bikes are sold in the millions and people would appreciate a much more detailed explanation of how do you resolve the problem other than taking it to a bike shop. The content on your channel should be actual reviews instead of a opinion because of bad assembly on cheap bikes. This channel actually has promise if you had taken the time to study the subject and technical aspects of cycling. Putting i made you look content on you tube is for the cute puppy crowd or cuddly cats. You said the xr pro review was in the works but you jumped to so many other subjects that i lost interest with your opinion and for people that actually cycle it will be the same thing. If you are going to do reviews then do them, but always saying i had to bring it back is very suspect of the reviewer because thousands of those bikes have already been sold. Team up with the mechanic or a buddy if you need help but the reviews are very suspect and its not because i want them to be successful. They just dont offer me any faith in your judgement. You are also putting content out that has machines that were obviously damaged or tampered with because no one buys bikes that have frame tube separation or indentations that look like a screwdriver and hammer was used to destroy the welds. Delete my post if you want but your channel had so much promise for being a actual public service instead of a Seths Jackass get yourself killed entertainment channel.
+Thiosemicarbizide Benzoyl Alcohol a couple of things. First, the only bike that had frame separation was shipped in the box, so I don’t see how that could be an issue where a customer could know in advance. There hasn’t been any tampering on any bikes on my channel. On top of that it’s highly unlikely that the average buyer would do an in-depth inspection of an off-the-shelf bike if it were purchased directly at a store. An example of that is the Huffy Cranbrook with the heavily warped front wheel. Most buyers likely wouldn’t have checked that before rolling it out the door. Any issues I present are issues encountered during unboxing or by basic riding (less than basic if you listen to the people that say I can’t ride.) Second, you are seeing videos other than the XR because many of these are cue videos and/or filmed close by as family health issues have meant I can’t stray too far at the present time (though thankfully that is changing,) and on top of that I don’t ride trails alone on new bikes - Especially not ones from Walmart. With college starting back and the weather cooling it is a little harder to recruit trail assistance for videos, but they are coming. That also reflects the reality of an average consumer’s trail/bike time. Life isn’t all trails for most riders as work/family/repairs all play a large role in when and what someone can do on a bike. Third, I am the average rider and try to approach things like the average rider and in a way that the average rider can relate - and with an average budget. People on average budgets don’t buy a 99-199 bike, discover it has issues, then take it to a shop to spend even more money to get its flaws resolved. They return it and go for the luck of the draw to get a good one. I have been slowly trying to ease my way into the good graces of a bike mechanic so I can get more in-depth on some issues, but that’s a work in progress. Plus, I’m not going to routinely spend half or double the money to repair a cheap bike as that’s just not financially viable for the population that buys these bikes. All that said, you will see the XR again soon. Not on the trail at first, as I used it as a commuter for a week. Hint: it didn’t make it a week; Another chain break. As it is a long-term bike it’s getting an entirely new chain (information on that in the commute video) and should be on a trail very soon. Finally, why would I deplete this comment? You’re entirely free to your opinions, and I respect them - even if they do sometimes drift from the realities of the situation :) The only comments I routinely delete are comments that are overly offensive and/or clearly spam. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to share your input. Both are appreciated.
Then my sincere apologies and that wasn't a accusation in regards to frame separation but a observation on a bike that should have been considered a failure from the onset. This channel has much more promise than i think you actually realize and i am only rooting for your success. I understand work loads and family matters dont always agree. You seem to be the only one on the entire web that is doing content that actually pertains to the most sold bikes with analysis. I am really anticipating your xr pro review but fully understand circumstance. With all my prayers for your loved ones i appreciate the reply. Other you tubers are just showing bikes but your channel is offering public service commentary and we appreciate the efforts.

I'd love that blue Western Flyer at 3:20
I put one of those motors on an old Huffy Scout Mountain bike.
Straight up and it ain't no joke.
Thanks for sharing
@@KevCentral And thanks for posting up this video. Great job my man!!!
Wow! This is cool; I didn't know this video was on here! I miss the bike shop, helped him with mechanic work a few summers.
I hope you notified the Consumer Product Commision about the safety issues you've had with the various bikes.
Hello, could you tell me what size screws the chain guard takes? Thank you :)
@kevecentral i don't recommend buying the whole engine kit as the gear that they gave me was partially bent which i had a problem with the chain failing off until i beat the gear flat with a hammer and also the chain tension-er is cheap and is dangerous best if you buy the parts separately.
What did the bike shop do for $35 to make coaster brake work effectively?????
I put a 2cycle kit on mine in 2016 . still riding it . it melted the tires 2 the tube. I had to get noby mountain tires. & that basket will break & lock up the front tire.
Hey KevCentral, can you try the following hybrid bike: Diamondback Insight 1? It's like gray and greenish
I need the coaster brake arm itself. It has a slot not a star. Where can I get one? Thanks
What's a good road b8ke with a coaster brake.....is there any besides cruiser bike
I also have a walmart schwinn aerovane same deal coaster brake is a dry brake the problem packed with grease give it better?
But WHERE is Shoals in USA??
To commute around town, I trust my bmx, I can bunnyhop up curbs, ride down stairs, and get air off almost every bump, It is just an enjoyable experience
Collin Thomas sammmeee
love the old school bmx bikes!
Can front and rear caliper brakes be installed on a Nel Lusso?
I love my Nellusso. Best damn grocery getter there be.
Does anyone know the Back Brake Hub specifications so I can buy part to fix the brake issues I have (only after riding it maybe 10 times) - the brake shoes don't stay in the brake cone, they slide together & jam the hub so the wheel won't turn. Huffy customer service stated that they don't sell the hub & or hub part & don't know the specs & won't state the manufacturer. thx
Good video my friend. I can’t wait to see what you do!
Where's the mongoose xr pro video?
nitrous07me this!
Kev great video ad always. I would love to see more videos of the Schwinn boundary before the snow comes.
Going to buy one of these next week. How do you check if the brake is a good one or not? Just get on the bike in Walmart and teat it?
Spin the wheel fast, then apply the brake. It should easily stop it. If you have to put a lot of pressure pick a different one
Try the GT Aggressor Pro
Right now they have it at Dick's for a good price ... $350.
I turned one of these into a 4 stroke 49cc cruiser. Yours looks so much nicer. The seat is different and more pin striping. I hope that's the only cost they cut on mine😵. It looks so nice compared to the Cranbrook but yea the brakes suck.
I wish this bike shop was in my town the ones around here only work on expensive bikes.
Do ya think I can squeeze a predator 212 on one
Well I did find out I can put a BikeBerry Flying Horse on it. all I have to do is have a DL and get the bike registered with the DMV and get a plate for it. Simple enough. So I will get the Nel Lusso this week and keep it for my Moped project.
You should buy that diamondback topganda that was at the bike shop. It comes equipped with a shimano altus rear derailleur and a 100mm sr suntour fork. I personally think it's a great trail bike. I used to ride one before I got my diamondback hook and I thought it was a great trail bike. It also handles small jumps very well.
+tommehh p3r3z he has quite a few bikes in that shop that I’d love to have.
Don't cheap made department store bikes, instead go to a bike shop, and them extra dollars to get a quality cruiser!
I've called for warranty with other Walmart bikes. They ask for pictures and receipt. You get your parts in about a week. But great video and good info
Make a video on the Raleigh tokul 1 again
Can't wait to see me the motor! I'm thinking of doing one to a MTB!
cool bike shop
Maybe Walmart road bikes next?
paw EHO yeah i was thinking the same
I welded a go cart motor on an old steel walfart bike and just mashed the centrifugal clutch up against the rear tire. I can't believe that junk worked. It got up to 37 mph before it would top out.
That's the spirit!
Would this bike fit someone who is 5’11?
yes
I own a Huffy Nel Lusso. Same colors and tires as on a 1905 Harley Davidson. No way I'm getting rid of it, even though it's a reproduction of an old bike.
What a machine!
That western flyer makes my hair stick up
Ha!
u should do a bmx cruiser
That's what I'm doing, adding a 80 cc motor
Between the two of us, at least one should live through the first ride.
Just saying, It's not 80cc's, It's around 50 or so but they still are awesome!
Yeah dont do that! I did, melted the shoes in the coster break. Almost died at 35mph.
@@509reeves8 does the wheel move but with a lot of friction
u should open up a bike shop
+Super Crazy Luis SHOW!! 🚴🏻
Gear broke off the wheel of my Cranbrook in only a week.
Walmart bicycle's are dangerous, especially if you are riding on a road with cars. I got tired of not being able to buy a quality cruiser bicycle, so I finally just broke down and restored a Chicago made Schwinn.
There are some decently useable WM bikes out there. Congrats on the Schwinn restoration. Those old ones are tanks
You seem like a good person. Have a good day
What?? I stop immediately!! With my motorized bike. Nel lusso
👍👍
ATENTION: i have a motorised bike and its not worth it, on mine the rear sprocket riped the spokes out of the back wheel and after a while it became too high maintenance and started to cost way to much, just letting you know!
All the Falcon coaster breaks suck. You will never find one that will lock up the back tire. You need an old Shimano for that.
They don't make 'em like they used to. Probably liability issues
The bike shop mentioned the old Shimano. I would think not being able to stop would be more of a liability than locking up the back tire. At least from my perspective :)
i got. same bike. mob tvv, mob music, LA
To be fair it's a $100 bike on sale lol.
Bikeberry kits are the same as any ebay kit. Don't kid yourself.
If you need something that is durable and reliable dont go to target or wal-mart
dont put to big of a engne in it !
+Tommy Cuthbert it will be restricted so it won’t go too fast.
yeah need hydrolic discs on it
Yeah, don't put bigger than 600cc in it haha
An engine.... O_O

Simple solution get a better bike
+Thiosemicarbizide Benzoyl Alcohol 👍🚴🏻
