- Today Antonio & I review Netflix's 'Uglies', a movie about a dystopian world where beauty reigns supreme. Starring Joey King, it dives into the true story of societal pressures and conformity in the early 1980s, wrapped in a futuristic setting. My compadre Antonio and I weren't exactly thrilled-uglies by name, ugly by nature!
I ventured into this film because, well, anything that rides the Netflix hype train seems intriguing. But let me tell you, even Antonio's keen eye for detail couldn't find much to praise. The movie struggles with shallow plots and lackluster performances. Joey King's role doesn't impress, leaving us yearning for the charm she showed in 'A Family Affair'.
Despite the movie's attempt at deep sea philosophical themes, it feels like a rock-and-roll superstar trying to wrestle its way into a professional wrestling ring-awkward and misdirected. If you're a fan of the books, beware. But if you're curious, maybe give it a shot and share your thoughts!
