      clumsybookgirl13 That's great to hear because that's exactly why I am making these videos. I was struggling to get some detailed information when I got started so I am glad I can help now that I've learned a few things... and I feel I still have so much to learn when I see the work of some other wonderful face and body painters :)

      +Bella Wess It took me a while also to get it right. I realised that the problem was often my secondary color (the one on the tip) that wasn't pigmented enough. Now that I use stronger colors it works a lot better.

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  5 років тому +2

      Thanks for your feedback. Well, making dots is possible with a regular pointed brush too but the trick then is to load the brush with lots of wet (but not drippy) creamy paint.

    Sophie, I love your tutorials. You are a very good teacher. I would like to buy a round brush with a rounded tip like you show making good dots in this video. Do you have a recommendation of what you use and where I can get it? Thank you!

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  7 років тому +1

      This great brush from Loew Cornell has been discontinued from the brand and I am absolutely gutted about it... I am still on the lookout for a replacement but haven't found one that I love as much yet. When I do, I will give the info in another video because I get a lot of questions about that. In the meantime, what you could do is buy a regular round brush (pointy) of a size 8 or 10 and ever so slightly round the tip by cutting some of the bristles off. It's kind of risky because brushes are expensive but that's what I will do if I can't find a decent alternative to my beloved brush once it gives up on me...

    Hi Sophie I'm starting to do face painting and I'm finding your videos extremely helpful. One question I have is: when you double load the brush and make flowers and then the paint is used up and you want to double load it again, do you have to wash it in between or can you just go back into the white? Will that make the color muddy? If you are doing multiple children how do you have enough clean brushes for each design?

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  7 років тому +3

      Good question! In this case, you would have to clean your brush in clear water and start again loading the white first + the other color at the tip. But if you load correctly, and especially if you take your time getting enough "creamy" white on the bristles, you will be able to paint up to 10 full flowers.
      I paint loads of children all the time at events and parties and i re-use the same brushes over and over again. I just rince them shortly in my water cup. When you work at an event, there is absolutely no way to use a clean new clean brush each time or to sanitise it between children.
      To keep this as hygienic as possible, I never paint on a child who appears to be sick or who has open wounds, strange skin irritations. If the skin is not clean, or if the child is sweaty, I give a wet wipe to the parents and have them clean their child and first come back again when he/she is clean and dry. I also change my water quite regularly.
      Hope this helps. Good luck to you!

    Hi Sophie, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us :) Your videos are so helpful and motivate me to keep practicing ^^ I love your designs and I can't wait to try some out and create my own :D
    I have a question regarding the brush: I am currently using a #4 sized brush that's a little cheaper than yours, but not much. I am slowly getting more control over it and can easily do the thin to thick teardrops, but when I try thick to thin, tiger stripes or swirls the bristles come apart and I end up with streaky lines. I noticed that it doesn't happen if I hold it at a specific rotation, but it's hard to do that every time, especially when doing swirls.
    As I live in New Zealand it's not that easy to find suitable brushes (I tried a more expensive brand and it made a difference, but the long hairs were very hard to control for me.)
    I am thinking of ordering the brush you used and a mark reid to try them out, but I'm not sure if it's my lack of skill or the brush :')
    What would you recommend? (Shipping is almost as expensive as the item itself :/)

    • @germaneggxx
      @germaneggxx 7 років тому

      I figured it out :') The brush has a weird cut and one side is longer than the other, forming a tip that comes apart when you twist it. I'm now using the more expensive brush and it might just take me a little longer to get control over it since it's very soft, but it works perfectly :3

      Hi Mandy. I think that getting a good clean line is a combination of both a good brush + lots of practice. A long time ago, I took a face painting course with the famous Wolfe brothers and everybody was asking them what brushes they used or preferred because their designs are so exquisite. They both answered that they used "no name" brushes that were cheap and available in any arts and crafts stores, nothing special. This just to say that getting a super expensive brush will not help anyone who is not willing to take the time to practice this lines over and over again... Now that I've gained more practice myself, I tend to think that practice is actually even more important than anything else. This being said, a good brush does make things a lot easier - especially at the beginning. If you are not able to find the Loew Cornell brushes in your country, I recommend you go to an arts store and check out the brushes sold for painting watercolours. They are usually pretty good for face painting too but you will need to make sure that the bristles are not too soft, otherwise you will have trouble getting good control of your lines. There are lots of face painting stores in Australia that might ship to your territory so you might want to look into those if you haven't already.

    hi there
    I love your videos.
    I'm wondering where you get the brush from to make dots. as it says you use a round brush, but the ones I search for seem to have all point tips. do they have a special name at all please? xx

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  7 років тому

      The specific brush that I used to make the dots is a Loew Cornell Comfort line #6 but unfortunately it has been discontinued by the manufacturer. I will have to find an alternative myself soon... However, you can do good dots with pointy round brushes too. Just make sure that you use a bigger model (size 6 and up) and that you load it with lots of creamy paint (not too wet though). The point will then appear more rounded and you will be able to make great dots as well. It just takes a bit a practice to get the right paint consistency. Good luck and thanks for your comment!

    Hi Sophie, I am just starting out on face painting. Thanks so much for your tutorials, they help a lot. Practicing the lines, tear drops and swirls what keeps happening is I seem to not have enough paint, especially on the tip of the brush. Somehow it is dry very quickly, no matter how much I try to load it (am using black from Diamond FX at the moment). Do you have any tip for me as how to have enough paint on the brush for longer or various lines without having to load it constantly with paint? Many thanks, Iris

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  9 років тому

      +Iris CR Good choice! DFX black is actually a good color to practice lines. It's hard to know exactly what the problem might be... Take your time to load your brush properly with lots of creamy paint. Wet your brush, rub on the paint, wet the tip of the brush again, rub on the paint some more. Maybe the bristles of your brush are too short to hold a lot of paint? But you know, even if you load your brush well and your brush is perfect for face painting, there is only so much you can paint with one load. It's absolutlely normal to have to reload quite regularly. I usually reload after, let's say, 3 swirls or 6 teardrops. When I do my outlines, I keep the pot of paint in my hand in order to reload quickly without having to go back to the table each time and it saves a lot of time. Good luck and happy painting!

      misshoneyvd Thanks a lot! The brush I use in the video to create the flower petals is a Loew Cornell "Confort" (3000) series in a size #6. It's really an awesome brush for this kind of thing.

    Thank you for explaining the basics in these 3 (4) videos! You cover all info I have been searching for! You are very through and I enjoy your tips ! :) Are you using Tag FX for your Black?? I have had trouble getting the black lines smooth. I have been using snazaroo paint . I think you mentioned that brand is good for the base coat. Thank you again !

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  10 років тому

      Jackie Garrett Hi Jackie, thanks for your feedback! I am using Wolfe FX for black. It is very dark and great for line work but it is so pigmented that it can stain on lighter skin tones (as you can see from my fingers in the video, haha!). I used Diamond FX black previously, which is equally good. If I need to cover a larger area with black (pirate's eye patch, etc), I then use Mehron Paradise Black, wich is a lot smoother and easier to apply and to remove. I personally haven't tried using the Black from Snazaroo but I don't think it is would be appropriate for details or line work. Snazarroo in general is much better suited for base or blending, in my opinion.

    Love your videos! When you are practicing brush strokes on paper- what kind of paper are you painting on? Watercolor paper or something similar? Thanks : )

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  9 років тому

      Caren Kaziyev I don't practice on paper but rather on my own forearm or my leg. In this video, I was using a piece of regular plain paper that I previously laminated. It's not the same as practicing on real skin (obviously) because the surface doesn't absorb any moisture - but a decent alternative nonetheless.

    I got a regular art painting brush.... keeps making a split lol..... .-. Does facepainting brush do that? Cause i`m practing the brush strokes using art paint brush. Just wondering

    • @SophiesTipps
      @SophiesTipps  4 роки тому +1

      Regular art brushes (usually made of animal hair) are not suitable for face painting. They are too soft and do not "catch" water paint efficiently. You should look for face painting brushes specifically or at least watercolour or aquarelle brushes. Some of them are OK for face painting but they need to be quite firm, otherwise you will only get frustration. I never experience any splitting with my brushes. Hope this helps.
