During the second world war and later, in the times of communism, the official celebration of Independence Day was prohibited, and independent patriotic activity was suppressed by force. The open holiday was restored by the Parliment Act of February 15, 1989 under the name of National Independence Day.

Only because Russia swallowed Duchy of Warsaw created out of Prussian and part of Austrian partitions, we ended up with the map you've presented ...

These politicians LED proces of regaining Polish Independent dusing First World War. Polish patriots call them the fathers of Polish lndependence.
