  • Santa Monica Firefighters and Harbor Patrol Officers responded to a call regarding an unhoused individual requiring medical attention. After assessing the individual, firefighters arranged for him to be transported to the hospital by ambulance. Meanwhile, Harbor Patrol Officers gathered his belongings and placed them in storage.
This incident highlights a broader trend, as approximately 20-25 percent of the calls to 911 received by the Santa Monica Fire Department involve individuals experiencing homelessness. The department regularly handles a range of emergencies, including medical issues and reports of people in distress or lying down.
These calls often present unique challenges for first responders. Frequently, by the time crews arrive, the individual may have already moved on, is found sleeping, or is suffering from chronic medical conditions that do not necessitate immediate treatment or transportation to an emergency room.
The Santa Monica Fire Department and Harbor Patrol work collaboratively to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents, including those experiencing homelessness. Their efforts reflect the city's commitment to addressing the complex needs of this vulnerable population through compassionate and comprehensive emergency response.

I think the politicians think that it's more compassionate to call them unhoused. It does nothing to help the homeless or unhoused people.

To paraphrase George Carlin.." you can change the name but that doesn't change the condition "..

@@darlalong1957 Exactly. We can call them 'unfettered by domicile restraints' or something completely soft serve, but they're still homeless. Long Live George Carlin.

He's lucky! He's going to be seeing by a doctor in hospital. In other countries they don't take people underworkeless or homeless. You paid first or your family.

Unhoused seems like such a negative connotation...time for another word without the stigma

People need to grow a shell. They're homeless, despite what 'rainbows and unicorns' word people call it because it's 'too harsh'.

@@gcrauwels941 yep. I was being sarcastic (hard to translate on a post). Homeless is negative because being homeless is...call it anything you want and that word will become just as negative because it will be associated with pooping on the sidewalk and piling garbage under freeway overpasses.
