I just came back from being unnoticed on an enemy´s six, missing my shot, being reversed upon by said enemy and destroyed within 15 seconds. I think it´s time I started watching this series.
You can find Boyd's presentations online and IMO they are still very influential today (Hybrid warfare reminds me very much of the ideas in "Patterns of Conflict"). If you are interested in a more deeper study of Boyd's ideas, I recommend "Science, Strategy and War: The Strategic Theory of John Boyd" by Frans Osinga.
Wow, thanks... did not think about using considering G-forces that the opponent faces. Initially only think that realistic sim means more skill required for controlling the plane only. Not how it affects the opponent plane and visual and to consider it during combat.
That was amazing! A behind the scenes of what’s going on if you need to decide for a tactic. That’s exactly what I was looking for, for months now as it would help me become better and more flexible in any situation no matter what sort of game
Thanks Alex, it sounds like it came across clearly to you which is good to know. The OODA Loop is a bit of an abstract concept, so it took some effort to condense and illustrate it. As always, thanks for the feedback. It's really invaluable because it helps tweak my work based off what commenters such as yourself and others tell me.
Great lesson. I always find it fascinating to learn the defined terminology for my instinctive thought processes. Not that I'm often in that turbo loop!
Yeah it is an interesting concept, at least it puts to words something we take for granted. You'll know if you were in turbo mode though because after the engagement you'll realise that you don't remember thinking what to do, you were just doing it :-) That's the level you want to aim for, even if you lose, because practicing while running a turbo loop will make it even faster over time.
Thanks Zaius, it's nice to know you liked this mindset video. I wasn't sure how it was going to be received to be honest as it can be a very dry subject.
Watching this cause last year my team lost the warthunder tournament Flight fest Cup in My school and got 2nd place, This year im gonna give them a payback and win 1st place this time
Is there any way you can do a series like this and the flight basics, but for helicopters? A lot of rotary wing pilots out there are unaware of how to utilize their aircraft for the scenario they are in. I'm asking you because so far you've been the most comprehensive and helpful series I've seen on UA-cam
Being "out of plane" refers to not being in the same maneuvering plane as your opponent. You may need to go out of plane to reduce your turn radius and prevent overshooting an opponent (such as a high yo-yo). Maneuvering planes are explained in BFM Lesson #1: ua-cam.com/video/9twoHsMAiTM/v-deo.html
@@RequiemsACTL thanks very much. That's what I kind of figured from the context but wanted a definition to be sure. Googled it but no joy. Not long ago started with mil-sim flying and very recently found your videos. Very helpful. Subscribed. Thanks again.
Just found your new channel!! I loved your RoF videos on your old channel and thought you quit making videos. So happy that I found your new channel!! Also did you make videos about Cliffs of Dover?
Hi Frank, I did quit making videos for RoF after a while, and I'm not surprised you only just found my new one as I haven't really been advertising for it outside the IL-2 BoS forums, so tell your friends if they're interested in this sort of thing ;-) I never made videos about Cliffs of Dover because I've never explored how to use the recording and replay functionality. Also, for the longest time it was unplayable for me which put me off getting to know it better... but its very good now thanks to the work by the Team Fusion guys :-) There is plenty of good info for Cliffs already done though, so I doubt videos from me are needed. Besides, my plan is always to make tutorials so they can be applied across different sims and not just the sim I'm using to demo them (except for aircraft famils of course). I hope you like the new videos as much as old ones :-)
Hey requiem I'm back refreshing the basics again lol I was gonna see if you could potentially cover some topics like ways to engage certain types of targets as well as defended airfields in a multirole setting? I'm having some trouble with geometry and deciphering my potential attack vectors in those specific areas. The p40 in particular is a bad choice given it's poor maneuverability at high altitudes, but I'm hoping some etiquette and selective engagements might offset that. Especially having trouble intercepting and destroying bombers decisively without inviting a prolonged dogfight.
IL-2 Tutorials by Requiem DRY? Not the way you presented it. Col. Boyd was definitely thinking "out-of the -box" and so are you. You have a unique skill set of video graphics, thought articulation, imagination and love for air combat. Our IL2 community is lucky to have you. Keep'm coming.
gustaf3 Cheers Gustaf :-) I always spend time thinking how to present the material in the most efficient way possible, which is why I probably put videos out slower than most people, but the final product is worth it when I read comments like yours, thank you.
O.O.D.L. Is just the yanks over complicating things by trying to simplify them for the average U.S. Pilot. The R.A.F. Fighter pilot in 1939 had spent the years since the end of WWI absorbing the lessons learnt by the pilots who fought on the Western front. E.G. The maxim "always turn towards an attack" turn into an enemy rather than doing what he would expect.
@@stewartnicol3028 It's funny as hell that you consider OODA loops " over complicating" Everyone studied the lessons of WW1 and more than a few wrong conclusions were drawn. The RAF in particular had to make some drastic changes on the fly concerning fighter tactics on the lead up to the Battle of Britain.
just push the button for the heat seeking missile, turn round and enjoy your flight home. no mention of using the sun to your advantage, or even a cloud ?
I see. Thank you. I fly RC airplanes and I'm learning to do aerobatics. Videos like yours are helping. I was not familiar with Dicta Boelcke so now I'm learning from that too. I did my first 4 point roll yesterday...very enjoyable.
SGTDan3 No SGTDan, I'm not an actual fighter pilot. I had a lot of exposure to fighter aircraft operations during my service though, and a couple of the guys who review the videos I make before a public release are ex-USAF fighter pilots as well. Their input is very important so subscribers can be sure that what I release is the real deal. It's probably why I put out videos a little slower. I wanted a peer review process where I submit what I make to them first and get all their thoughts on it, so if any changes need to be made I can make them, and you guys get an accurate tutorial that can applied both in-game and in RL. Cheers

My Pseudo ROF or Bos player: TaehtDewoht Sorry for my english... I have many pleisure to see you videos and you experience, Requiem (ROF or BOS) and learn many things about air fighting. ... But, on BOS flying with Yak and take advantage against B&zoomer 109 pilot is impossible at my point of view! If you have video which showing this situation, I''ll glad to see it. On ROF, I can take advantage with albatros against spad or Sea5 but, on Bos the powerfull difference between yak and 109 is too much.
Deutz Roland Thanks TaehtDewoht, your english is fine! I remember you from RoF :-) Yes, when a 109 is BnZing you it is hard to do anything if he is good at BnZing you. If you decide to stay in a fight with him then you need to be defensive a lot. It becomes a game of energy attrition where you need to lose less energy when you maneuver defensively than he does when he attacks you. Then you have to hope he doesn't pull away and regain his energy to restart the fight with the advantage. Keep your maneuvers smooth and try to straighten up and fly directly away from him after his attack. This way you can keep increase the horizontal distance away from him which makes it harder for him to use his vertical advantage effectively. It is very difficult for the Yak 1 vs 1 against the 109, so the easiest solution is to just have a wingman nearby to help! Just the presence of another guy for the 109 to think about makes it harder for him.
Thank you for Answer. I try this same tactic (like on ROF) but it's really hard. One raison is the fact that the view behind is not so good on BOS than ROF. And when we lose sight the ennemy 3 secondes … that's mean dead. Indeed, on ROF, (alb, Pflaz vs spad) II try to dodge (ovoid) the attack without less altitude or speed. After 4-5 attack, the spad can be hit or must dive and run away. But with these light manouevres, the risk to take one bullet in engine, or fuel tank … or Head is bigger than during heavy manœuvres. Same risk on BOS. Other difficultie, during close dogfiht, F4 can turn easely than yak but it have more powerfull and can stay above with more energie. It's very difficult to shot down f4 in close dog fight (compared with ROF: Pfalz III vs camel - the Pfalz is one best manouvrable plane but it losses energie quickly and the camel can take advantage). As you say, team work is absolutly necessery if we want flying on russian side. So Long, Cheers.
Wait, so you're saying here I need to decide my action quick and fast, without having to think too much? From what I understood from this video, the technique could become extremely repetitive and an opponent may exploit the fact you've left out the "decision" process.
Lolards These Days... Well the idea is that you practice to become familiar with different situations so your actions become innate. If someone tried to exploit you leaving out the decision process then you could comprehend and act quick enough to nullify his trying to exploit you, which would mean he wouldn't be exploiting you in the first place. It basically comes down to who can understand the situation and apply themselves faster to get the advantage.
