- Before Turaga, they were Toa. This week we dive further into Metru Nui with Lhikan’s summoned heroes, the Toa Metru. As we well know, these Toa transition into the Turaga we know and love from Mata Nui. Getting to see them in their prime brings a lot of expectations to the table, expectations that hopefully are not too high.

These were a great evolution of the technic engineering of the Slizers/Throwbots. Those were basically just a function in a box body with some joints. The Mata and Nuva were a more streamlined version of that, but still pretty clunky and limited in articulation. The Metru were the most advanced this type of build got before Lego phased gears out. We wouldn't see anything like this again until G2.
Agreed, the engineering here is really a work of art. It'll be sad to see the gear functions go soon, but at least we got to see their purpose optimized before they got phased out
toa metru are definitely some of the coolest toa LEGO has put out

The toa nuva may be my favourite's but they are clunky
I just got all 6 toa inika at a Salvation Army for 10 dollars, this video is the perfect way to end the day.

@@AllOutBrick none of them had zamor spheres and jaller was missing a leg, other than that they where complete. 3 of the 6 swords still had working batteries, too.
@@TheCakesCup26 it’s amazing how well the swords hold up over the years, I bought all six inika back in 06 and they still work fine.
@@boogie1434 agreed, I used to have just one of the swords (I have no idea why) and the glow worked for 2 years, and I pressed it atleast 6 times every day.

I remember getting the toa metru back then, and my child brain was blown away with the articulation when compared to the Nuva/Mata

They didn’t have shoulders. Shoulders are way more important than knees or elbows for posability
This was the peak Bionicle. Truly the highlight of the series
I remember I made a Mock of Takanuva using Nuju's and Lhikan's body pieces. The white torso with the gold accents is perfect.
I'm waiting for 2006 sets. For me 2001-2003 and 2006 had the coolest sets, especially titans.
Agreed, 2006 had some of if not the best titan sets in the whole line.
I thought that the toa inika were some of the coolest sets.
I personally waiting for 2007-2008 (their peak, imho)
As a kid I had to save my money for what seemed like FOREVER so I could get myself Toa Metru Nokama. She's still one of my top favorites to this day along with Toa Metru Nuju.
Definitely my favourite wave of Toa. Streamlined designs, simple yet consistent colour schemes and some brilliant play functions
I love the Toa Metru so much, such a great blend of articulation and a gear function and the weapons are great to top it all off.
One thing I'll add is that when putting together Whenua's claws, they work best when the blue pin is attached in the middle hole. They mesh together perfectly when you do that.
I did have some trouble attaching Whenua's claws together, thanks for the tip!
2004 was my favourite Bionicle year. The Toa Metru are by far my favourite of all Toa teams, both in lore and in design.
I also love the Vahki designs and the overall dark setting of the whole year. The movie was fantastic too.
Been so excited for this video to drop, I got Vakama sealed recently since I never got him as a kid and it was such a pleasure opening up that canister. Glad you feel similarly to me about these awesome models!

The worst day, but also the best day
I missed these sets, I hear they were a nice set of their time.
i liked how the lids were able to connect together to make the storage containers that was used to trap the matorans. those small details that they included was pretty cool
OH HEEEELLLL YES. I've been waiting for this one for weeks. Toa Metru (specifically Nuju) were the sets I loved the most.
Ooooo Nuju is a really unique favorite here! His weapons that shift into snow shoes are such a great design

Childhood Nostalgia hits hard
These are how I got myself into the Bionicle franchise, I have fond memories of me and my brother getting all of them and getting to know the lore.
They are special for me, and I'm surprised how well they hold up to this date.
One thing I liked about the Toa Metru is who they were before they became Toa. We didn’t get that much backstory in the Comics. But in the movie, we find out that Vakama was a mask maker, Nokama was a teacher etc. But Vakama had a hard time understanding what he was meant to be.
The books go into it even.
My personal favorite Toa Team! Great play functions, great aesthetics, and great characters! Awesome review!
bionicle is like 50% of my childhood memory's lol, the books, toys, movies, comics and that one point and click game.
also you're enthusiasm for it is just so cool and refreshing to see.
These were some great sets. Unfortunate that their dark colours became 'standard' (& too my mind, overused compared to the bright colours used by earlier Bionicle sets), but the Metru sets themselves can hardly be blamed for *that.*
Nokama is my favourite, probably. I think the mast being a different colour actually helps break up the monotony of dark blue you'd be seeing otherwise. That, & her mask is big enough to make the 'upright' head position look natural; w/ Vakama you're locked into the 'hunched' position b/c the Huna lacks sufficient 'chin coverage' & so moving the head 'upright' results in him having a *huge* neck.
That disk launcher is one heck of a piece of plastic, tho. Even if it doesn't fire as far as the more conventional models.
Let's gooo! I've been waiting for this video! Toa Vakama is my favorite Toa set. Keep up the good work!

I had Vakama, Onewa and Matau just for the combination model. It looked so cool :-)
My only gripe about this line is that they were basically clone sets. I would have loved a bit more variation in the builds.
I just got Onewa used in good condition, I love the articulation and how they still look robotic enough to Be decent Bionicles.
Perfect for the first Toa with bendable knees and elbows. Adding on to that, they have neck articulation, nice touch!
Words cannot describe how surprised and excited I was when I saw this team all posed in a display in the Downtown Disney LEGO Store. It signified so much potential and growth in the universe. It was the start of such great things. Not my overall favorite canister team, but they will forever hold the title of "Biggest Hype Inducer for Young James"

Yeah, you can combine them! I couldn't squeeze a Matoran into it though so I decided to leave it out
Thats correct. Matorans are supposed to be fittable
Good thing to note is that there exists a combiner of all 6 of toa metru sets: Krahka, the shapeshifting rahi

Legends of Metru Nui was what got me into collecting Bioncles, easily the best set out of the bunch, imo.
Mask of Light is the most nostalgic for me which holds it up higher, but the animation quality definitely got a nice bump up for Legends of Metru Nui
Got all of them complete for $55 , 11 Bionicle ( Hewkii mahri sealed too) for $80 , a new Visoral Roporak for $25 , 3 Rhakshis for $20 , i'm outside the united states and finding them at that price locally was awesome, normally i would have ended up paying for all of that almost a five hundred dollars with shipping , custom ,tax and everything , i can feel how my crippling depression is being slowly but surely getting in control thanks to that , Bionicle have helped me in my darkest hours and everytime that i think about end it all i just think about the franchise that was by my side as a child and i can keep moving on, at least for now ,let's hope that it still works in the future.
Grandmother bought one toa metru for me, every time we were visiting store. I think I got them all if I remember correctly or could be that I missed Matau. Those were simpler times. I really wish Lego could give Bionicle another shot. I totally missed G2 because it was kind of that time of life for me. I didn't follow anything Lego did or wasn't interest.
Was lucky to get some G2 sets from internet. Both Kopaka master and uniter. He is my favorite Toa.

My only complain is how Nokama mask is too bright for the body pieces
Maybe a little bit but I interpret it as if it's just glowing
I used to dislike it, but now I like how it provides some unique contrast

Man I remember when I was 5, my grandma brought me toa nokama as a present, that was the very first lego/bionicle, that really sparked a passion, I'm finishing collecting bionicle sets years later, with only missing few as of today

Only con I could see, especially when looking at series to follow, is how similar they all are.
I remember Nokama being my first bionicle, I loved it!! Unfortunately it got stolen when I left it in my parents car..
These were my favorite Toa, and they've aged like fine wines. They're just plain good designs.
If they haven't already, these sets will surely go down as some of the best Bionicle offered in its run. I remember thinking as a kid that the only thing that could make them better was the brighter colors of the original Toa Mata. While color preference is surely subjective, I also felt the brighter colors were more representative of the elements.
To be honest, you are one of better bionicle reviewers.
Suddenly I recalled a memory where as a kid I got Toa Nokama to join Toa Vakama. When I opened the brand new Nokama box, inside there were blue parts and white parts. Suddenly I found the Toa Nuju mask inside. That was so sick, I got two sets in one box! I think that the only pieces missing from Nuju were some black connector sticks

Toa metru had the strongest ball joints. My lhikan model literally outlasted everything I had and never cracked or got loose

Metru nui was my introduction to bionicle. Hordika matau was my first set, Nokama mey second set. Too bad I lost them. Darn you toddler me!

While I will always remember 2001-2003 fondly, there was something about the 2004 sets that I really liked. I don't know what it is.

These were the first bionicle toa sets I actually managed to collect all of when I was a kid, were defo my favourite figs out of the lot. I still have a majority of the parts, so eventually I might attempt to rebuild them, just so cool. Although I wish I still had the canisters.
Vakama has always been my favorite, he was my first of the toys/toa... god, I miss this series so much...

Vakama was my very first Bionicle and because of that the Toa Metru have a special place in my mind.
This for me is the best set of all, they are neither too small nor too big, they are practically the size of the Hero Factory protagonists, I wish if one day there is a G3 Bionicle they would be inspired by this set.

My favourite of the bunch is Matau. I really like his aero slicers, they're the most satisfying to swing and it's awesome how they become wings; his Mahiki is also my favourite Metru mask. He's funny as hell, too.

Never been a big fan of the toa metru as characters but you have to admit these are some of if not the best toa builds. They feel so healthy and you can really tell this is when the toa were in their prime. Able to bend their arms and knees. I really loved these builds
I get a sense with these Toa like they really were at their peak, much like the Jedi during the Prequel Trilogy

By far these were the best Toa released. My brother and I almost own all the Toa Metru and we own some of the Vahki and Titans Sets.
One other play feature these sets had was the tops of the canisters could be put together to make the containers the Matoran were put in. If you use the blue pins each toa came with (as well as relocating the arms) they should be able to hold them
So, watching mata nui Monday is a lot better when you are also building Legos, just found that out while watching this, and building Legos! Haha

I regret selling my toa Metru at a garage sale years ago. I had all six and they were awesome. Fortunately, I held onto toa Lhikan and toa Iruini so I still have a couple of Metru-style toa.
Best toa build of all time! Just the right size and with a good amount of joints. Only a shame the gears aren't higher friction like the 2015 toa and it's not a little more varied between models (at least pohatu style).

The one flaw I have with the Toa Metru specifically lies with Matau. His weapon storage doubles as a flight pack, but his neck is too limited to look up very far. This is very simply solved by changing how his neck piece is connected to the torso (make it like Nokama and Nuju).
Fun fact about Nuju's mask and why it has a scope when his Turaga form doesn't (aside from tradition):
The Great Kanohi Matatu does not normally look like that. For that matter, neither does the Great Akaku (Kopaka and Matoro's mask). If it was useful for their job, or if they wanted to show some individuality, a Matoran could go to a Mask Maker and request an add-on be crafted for their mask. In the case of Nuju and Matoro, they got telescopic lenses. Nuju specifically got a combo telescopic and heat sensing lens (from Vakama, no less!) due to his job as an Astrologer (don't ask me what heat sensing has to do with star gazing). It continued to function after his transformation by Hordika Venom (don't as me how), but was lost upon turning into a Turaga; likely due to some form of damage.
That's it. YOU'RE HISTORY BUILDER, EVEN IF I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU DID THAT!
