If he had played this piece any faster his cello would have caught fire. I guess he was running overtime and had a train to catch.

upon receiving the stradivarius Davydov, Du Pre's instructor, declared it as "one of the really great instruments of the world". By 1970, du Pré began using a different cello (fabricated for her by Sergio Peresson), as she was bothered by the Davidov's "unpredictability." Cellist Yo-Yo Ma later commented, "Jackie's unbridled dark qualities went against the Davydov. You have to coax the instrument. The more you attack it, the less it returns". (so no always help) -Wikipedia-

What makes it better slower? Does it make it what you are used to? I see a conversation here...something new and exciting and yet not saying goodbye....are you so stop in how things should seem that you will be responsible for the loss of the life and wonder...and eventually the loss of classical music?
How dare you deny feeling and revolt...that is what created everything you pretend to defend

I feel completely at a loss because I sense that michievous, flirtacious spirit here in Juiians version. Can I be thrilled, utterly by him or told that it is mediocre? Fuck them"

i used to make those facial expressions while up in my treefort with a skinbook...i wonder if julian got his insane hand speed from gripping off as a young man?

He does play the Barjansky Stradivarius cello. Not to take anything away from him, because he is amazing. But playing a Strad does help...

It is a gavotte. The tempo is fine technically. It is David Popper anyway. I don't think he would have muched cared how it is played. Goltermann students were always very...eccentric, as Stephen De'ak has said more than once.

  • @jaspercroy

was his terrific hand speed developed through childhood petting.

    Like this?
She wants you play it with all the playfulness you see here?
Or does she want you to perform it like the boring nothing that I so often see?
This has a story. I see the cello as a michievous thing here. Webber has given you this, but make no mistake you go through the basics to get there

he really talented, but the piece itself actually isnt that hard except for a few places... i should know im playing it right now and the only reason it seems so amazing is because of how fast he is going

It was a silly, snobby statement. You need not give it any credence. Instruments do not make men. Men make instruments. They also make their proverbial marks in history without crediting their music machines. If you cannot define yourself with your instrument, then you have failed yourself. Dont blame the wood and strings. Outrageous and shocking. I say as I look at my Steinway.
