Classical Music Fails Vol. 2

  • Опубліковано 15 лис 2015
  • My second compilation of fails in the classical genre. The most common thread here seems to be less-than-competent page turners, but there's a whole lot more! Please enjoy, and don't hesitate to throw me a thumbs up and a comment if you enjoyed it.
I do not claim any of these clips as my own (except for one; sorry I won't tell you which!). All of them were previously published on UA-cam and all credit is due their original uploaders.

Horns are always in charge... Think of a bull and a conductor, a bull has a horns at the front and the arse at the back. Well and orchestra's the opposite' wise words I'd say. Page turning is the toughest job ever. I once forgot to turn in the middle of a second movement, got distracted by the pianist’s beautiful playing. Air turn is good.
The timing to turn is different with different pianists. Some have the following measures memorized while others prefer you turn a little bit early. It is also different in fast music than in slow music. 😂

Because most people who are page turners are people who doesn't know how to read music! Also they happen to not get paid enough to be at enough rehearsals for them to know when to do it.
There needs to be a button under the pianist's seat that they can press with their left foot to shock the page tuner to fucking turn the page if they dont do it fast enough.

@_Ali_ Just as we flutists check that all our screws are screwed in properly before a concert. Had my instrument fall apart on me in the middle of a concert before. Not fun. All because I didn't check that the screws were secure. You don't make that mistake again. Well you might, but it's not as important then. The screws on a flute only really act up and unscrew themselves when it's a new instrument. After it's unscrewed itself and been screwed back in once you're usually golden, but you should always check. Also always carry a miniature screwdriver for your instrument just in case.

_Ali_ i think sometimes the problem comes down to bad habits picked up from when they started playing. i know that the orchestra program in my school never taught about proper cleaning or when to replace strings. years later i find myself wishing they had taught me because of the permanent rosin residue on my violins from when i didnt know to clean it.

I believe her sound post had fallen. Somewhat difficult to explain, if you are unfamiliar with how violins are constructed you may need to Google a diagram. Basically violins work by transferring the string vibrations though the bridge (the light colored wooden part that holds the strings up) through a wooden dowel (sound post) inside the body of the violin to the underside. Which produces the sound. This dowel isn't glued in place, it is held securely in place by the pressure of strings against the bridge. This is also why a violinist always changes strings one at a time. If I had to guess, judging by the sheer amount of rosin caked on her instrument, her ability to play her violin is absurdly beyond her ability to property maintain it. Or it was badly, very badly mishandled.

+Alessandro Drudi Ahahahahahahahhaha! Brilliant! A very good friend of mine was in the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra when they went on an Asian tour with Midori. Too bad he is not here to tell the story himself - cause he is sooo funny. Trust me, I was doubling over when he was describing a typical day on the tour with Midori and her mom in the next room.
"I set the alarm for seven, but already at six a.m. I hear from the next room this violin playing STUPID SCALES... up and down, down and up, up and down ... for the whole HOUR!
There's no going back to bed for me.
OK, so I get up, take a shower and go downstairs to have breakfast.
I'm back in my room and what do I hear??? THAT SAME VIOLIN! Up and down, down and up, up and down! This time the "performance" is "enriched" with the damn arpeggios! Up and down, down and up, up and...
I pick up my clarinet. I practice for an hour and then, as we had agreed the night before, five of us from the orchestra go out, sight seeing, checking out the local stores, a couple of museums... I buy a tee shirt and some nice jewelry for my girlfriend back in NY. By noon, we're all back at the hotel. I head back to my room... I step out of the elevator and what do I hear? WHAT DO I HEAR!!!? The violin! I also hear an older woman bark out orders: "No! No! NOOO! AGAIN! Faster, hear me, FASTER!"
And again, and again, again and again...!
I go downstairs to have lunch. Everyone is there - the whole orchestra, conductors, tour managers, et al. Oooops! Someone is missing! Yes, you guessed it! She is in her room, with that lady, practicing pizicatto, vibrato, staccato, legato... ato...to...o... Origato!
She did not eat with us, poor thing. She had food delivered to her room which she never abandoned! For, to go to the hotel restaurant to have lunch or dinner with the rest of us was obviously a costly waste of time. Why go anywhere when the little one needs to practice!? The only time we saw her was at dress rehearsals and in concert.
You have no idea how many times I felt like barging into her hotel room and smashing that Guarnerri into pieces! Yes, pieces!
And... come to think of it, did this girl have a childhood? She was entitled to it, of course, but what happened?"

What was in theory the source of most of the offense of the violinist. I did hear harsh notes but I couldn't tell if it was vibration of the microphone on the violinist hitting clinkers or slightly off string. That she played through it confidently as if everything was great was probably a good cover. On someone's suggestion here I watched Midori play Sarasate Zapaedo and there is definitely a huge difference.

I was already nervous as heck for my jury, but then had to turn pages for a pianist at the last minute for their jury. There was one page turn that I was late on turning and the pianist got pretty upset with me. I hadn't realized he had the bar before the page turn memorized and I assumed he wanted me to wait until the end of the page to make the turn.

OMG reminds me of MM chamber. I was the pianist in the Poulenc Sextet .. in the last movement the stupid page turner knocked the music score off the piano. Luckily I had it memorized. Jeez. ONE JOB ! LOL. True story: I was performing Khatchaturian's Db Piano Concerto in my teens. The stage manager forgot to secure the rollers on the Steinway grand. So I hit the first chord and the piano rolled away LOL> I burst out laughing. We stopped. The technician came out and fixed it and the conductor and I came back. I was only 16. So it was a youth orchestra at a performing arts school and not a professional auditorium --But when you are a performer you see it all. I remember I was a rehearsal accompanist for a production of Sondheim's Company with Carol Burnett as Joanne. She told me a hysterical story about the 2nd act of Putting it Together .. the wardrobe did not secure her dress and her dress fell completely to the floor during the production . That was is on the bloopers of the Putting it Together DVD. John Barrowman fell to floor laughing hysterically. They stopped the production and started the whole 2nd act over after Carol changed. I also remember being in a production of Gianni Schicchi in college where we had no ideas our tights were a little too revealing under certain lights. The joke among us baritones was instead of Povvero Buoso . "Povvero bulge-o"
