We've had a Zero Water filter pitcher for over a year now and we love it. Our city water has a lot of chlorine in it as well as solids. Works great! We use Zero on our camping trips as well. I highly recommend them. The last time I bought the filters I bought a 12 pack on Amazon. They are significantly cheaper that way.

NO! DO NOT USE OLD FILTERS. I've tried many methods over the last 10 years of using Zero Water filters and the BEST way is to buy a cheap (less than $20) faucet filter as your pre-filter. This way you don't risk contaminating your new filter with bacteria and fungus that cause the weird smell and foul taste of a used filter. Trust me, this is the BEST way to do it.

If you are worried about bacteria and stuff, you could just boil the water and then pour that water into a new pitcher with a new filter.

      Hello,
The process of boiling water eliminates bacteria, but it does not remove larger particles that can prematurely clog filters. If the Zero filter is in good condition, it should effectively filter out most bacteria. However, if the water source is questionable, it may be advisable to boil the water as a precautionary measure, either before or after using the Zero filter. I'm just saying to pre-filter because those Brita filters are like $5 & the Zero's are double or triple that.

    Thanks for the video.
I order 4 filters at a time from Amazon for about 40 bucks on line. I believe Walmart's online price for the same quantity is about the same.
I have both the Zero Water pitcher and the 20 cup counter top dispenser.
So I do as you mentioned as one of the ways to make your filters last longer...that is when the newer filter in the counter top dispenser reaches 006 TSP (Total Disposable Solids) I transfer it to the pitcher and dispose of the pitchers filter and then put a new filter into the counter top dispenser and so on in what I call filter cycling.
I am finding using this proceedure that I am getting close to 5 weeks use per filter which would be 4 months total use out of all 4 filters used.
My guideline to keep me hydrated (I am an old guy in my 80's) is the Mayo Clinic 's recommended 3 quarts per day.
If I were to meet that requirement using bottled water I would need to drink 7 16oz bottles per day which, even if I used the lowest priced bottled water on the market it would cost me at least $20 per month.
Zero Water averages out to less than $10 dollars per month for me. So that's a savings of at least 50%..not to mention not having to lug home from the supermarket heavy cases of water and then having to dispose of them in the trash.
At my daughters house she has one of those refrigerator-freezers with ice dispenser and water filter. Whenever I have a glass of water at her house it tastes pretty good to me.
However when she comes over for a visit she claims my Zero water tastes wonderful...even better than her fridge filtered water.
I also get a lot of compliments on my coffee.
And, as everyone who loves coffee knows, a good cup begins with good water.
I should mention that water from my tap here in Houston has a 315 TSP reading.

Great video Matt. I don't know how I missed this when you posted it. Awesome idea about using the 006 filter to prefilter the water for the new filter. We use the Zero water pitcher. Hope you are doing well. Been following you on facebook too. Ps. Loved the lawnmower race at the beginning. I used to race champ karts (with roll cages and NASCAR seats and 5 point harness- I had to go to work on Monday morning. Lol. That was about 20 years ago. I'm 68 now.

I use a glass jar with a small opening so the 006 TDS filter fits right inside and use a plastic container that has 2 small holes in the bottom to dispense the water it sits right on top. Then I put the 006 and higher water through my new filter. My water here in norther Indiana has a TDS of over 400 and filters do not last very long at all especially the new ones.

I just started using zero water so your pre-filtering may increase the life expectation . Some people are mention that when it reaches 00.6 , it starts some smell . If there is no weird smell , you can go head and do pre-filtering process.

I do the same, we have the 30 cup dispenser that travels with us. At home, we will fill our rigs freshwater tank. We live in SE Michigan and our water out of the tap reads 99 to 104 PPM. Then we will re-use the 006 filter. We did have one problem with a filter, kept getting an airlock. Called Zero Water, they walked me thru how to remove the airlock and sent us out a new filter in 2 days at no charge. Great customer service.

We used to use a Brita pitcher before we got our Zero Water pitcher, and had a couple of boxes of filters left for the Brita so we basically use the brita in this way, pre-filtering the water. We also just using the brita for the coffeemaker, so no one has to stand around and WAIT for the zero water pitcher to take it's sweet-a** time to fill as often. I did notice though that once the zero water filter got past 006, the water tasted and smelled TERRIBLE, much worse than tap(it read 008 when I checked). So I think that there's a reason to change it out, even though the reading is much less than plain tap, as it seems that the concentrated crap and stuff trapped in the filter starts to back out into the filtered water after 006.

I had an amazing discovery. I maintain a 5 gallon filtered water container + zero water pitcher. When my zerowater filter gave me lemony water, I did the TDS test and it read above 50 TDS. I experimented by pouring RO filtered water into the filter and the meter read above 50 for that water. Then it hit me…pouring filtered water will flush out the particles that it filtered out before. So I kept pouring completely filtered water into the pitcher (about 1 liter) and saw the TDS readings for the filtered water decrease pretty easily. You can continue to use the filter until the lemony taste appears again and maybe replace it the second time the lemony taste reappears.

I'm trying to follow you. So basically you flushed the bad, lemony, filter with a certain amount of clean water and it revived it to a "neutral" state? Feel free to fill in more details. And by RO, you mean you've got a supply of reverse osmosis water?

I am single with a 23cup pitcher and have been doing this hack for some time now. Recently I decided to count how many days with and without the hack these filters would last. Doing the double filter I get about 23days of use before the citrus taste kicks in.. using only one new filter I got about 18days of use. Given within the 18days of use with 1 filter we hit the biggest heat wave (for 2wks) ever here in california so I did have to use extra gallons of water so all in all this hack did not work but it sure did make me feel good about myself when I was doing it hehehe..

Even if you have a previous system: like a Brita, etc. you can filter in that first, and it will extend a great deal, but best method is to have the two 0 water pitchers and and put the 006 in one and 0 in another. Least effort that way.

Matt are there any lower cost filter systems (including their replacement filters costs) that you could use to "pre-filter" the water that you then put in the Zero water filter? De-ionizer systems, water softener systems, other less expensive filter systems, whole house/RV filter systems?

Often before I get to 6, the filtered water gets an awful spoiled lemon taste. Ruins coffee, tea, or anything else. Obviously I change the filter, but I’ve noticed some may only last a couple of days. Our tap is usually around 325, but I usually get 2-3 weeks from a filter. It’s just me, so minimal use. I don’t buy the knock offs, either. Many thanks.
Does anyone know if the genuine zero filters can expire or go bad, even if unopened?
Ever experience a putrid lemon taste?
Would it lengthen the filter life to keep pitcher/filter/water in the refrigerator?

    • @rscott2247

▪Start with the cleanest water available.
▪Once each filter reads "006" use it in another reservoir as primary stage filtering. Pour that water into the reservoir that has a new filter, now being a secondary stage filter. It'll last much longer.
Now you don't have to sit thru 2 minutes 4 seconds of whatever that was, to listen to 3 minutes 35 seconds more of exactly what I've summed up here, and this guy posted 4 years ago in 1.5 minutes (after 1 minute of idle intro):

*The TDS reader, which stands for total dissolved solids measures the good minerals dissolved in water in parts per million (PPM). Those good minerals are essential and are needed in the water. Zero water removes those good minerals and claim that it's zero parts per million. You have to look at the contaminants that zero water removes, which is only 23 up to this date. You want to remove bad contaminants but KEEP the good minerals in water, that's why I after 2 years of using zero water, I switched to a different filter that removes over 270 contaminants but keeps the good essential minerals in the water.*

I will be experamenting on cleaning used one's now that the price has doubled. I don't know what comes through at 003 that tastes so toxic it's undrinkable leads me to believe if you don't open them up and manually clean the contents you will more than likely kill a new filter quicker pooring rancid water through them!?

Also maybe don't keep using the same old one... Obviously change it to the most recent used one...
I been on my zero filter about 2 years. I can't go back!
Apparently tho we're stripping too much out of the water like essential minerals n bits... We're suppose to Charge our water outside in the direct sun.. I've not tried this... I just think of the flies and bugs etc...
I'm just adding food for thought on what ever info I came across..
I think it's more important to rid everything out that keep all the awful stuff that's in tap water...
Don't know if same in us.. but I did a test for my kids n read our tap water (130) at min... Then I tested bought shop bottled water .. can't remember exact number but it was waaayy higher than our tap water...
People buy the bottles from shop thinking it's safer! The plastic containers they're sold in are probably adding to that read...v
The container/vessel we store water in can be important too... I store it in a big glass bottle in fridge n bought a glass smaller one for work... Ideally. Pure copper is the best way to store.. this is mostly from a spiritual level I'm led to believe... I spent a lot of money on copper screw top bottles that eventually the lining came off so they were probably just lined with copper n not pure... Just something to look into if anyone thinks about going down that route...
    Love to all 🖤
