I’ve been learning Ukrainian for the last 3 month and I have to say I really like this method of learning.
Will you be making lessons?
0:51, it's not wrong to say it is це in Ukrainian, but I think also telling people it's also воно in certain circumstances might help make sure people don't get the wrong idea.
Why would my bf say it's "Ти хочеш купити пиво або вино" instead?
This is something we'll introduce later, but Slavic languages have something called verbal aspect, which creates pairs of similar verbs.
In a way, it's similar to how in English we have "I am doing / I do", "I was doing / I did", and so on.
However it is much more complex (way more rules, unique conjugation, irregular forms) in Slavic languages and is BY FAR the hardest part of their grammar. So technically, while in English we just have "to buy", Ukrainian has купувати (imperfective aspect) and купити (perfective aspect).
In this case, your boyfriend is correct. Native speakers would say Ти хочеш купити, because after хотити (хочеш), it is a grammatical rule to use the perfective form купити, and not the imperfective купувати.
So for the purposes of this course in the early lessons, we're simply teaching the imperfect form as it's the most-used one, and students aren't really ready for for the nuances of verbal aspect yet. It's much more useful to be able to say a functional 2-verb sentence (want to know, want to buy) than it is to mix students up by telling them there are extra forms of every verb that are sometimes very different from each other.
Hope that helps!
@@FluentFastUA That makes sense. Thank you for the detailed explanation 😊
This has been very useful while learning! Just wish there were more people to speak to in my area.
Дякую друг!
Дякую вам! If you can't find anyone, you can always come visit Ukraine 😉
Since I came back home (Brussels) from Ukraine this summer, I studied it daily. These videos are really satisfyingly put together, lay out and audio wise. Very important to find this content on YT. Every single time I have a small conversation with someone in Ukrainian they are so flattered and supportive, it’s amazing the chances it gave me. Like some other people say here, wish there were more people to speak with , I wish that too and that people saw it as a language they wanna start learning also. But once you get in contact with some natives and maybe make some droozies it’s a very emotional language to get in touch with. Anyway thank you again for the videos. I’ll binge watch them
Could you spell the words phonetically, also?
I suggest going back and rewatching the "Learn the Alphabet" lesson until you're confident:

While phonetic spellings are helpful, they hold you back from having proper pronunciation, and won't help you learn to read, which is a huge part of knowing a language!
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching our videos 💙
