What's it Like to Fly on TAP Air Portugal A330neo?

- I flew with TAP Air Portugal in their A330-900neo from San Francisco to Lisbon in early June. It was my first time flying with TAP and many had warned me that they didn't have a good reputation.
At San Francisco, there was no lounge open at the international terminal. I visited an empty ghost lounge prior to boarding. Onboard TAP, I explored the seat products in both Business and Economy Class. The plane was new and the cabin was fresh. The pilots gave me a great welcome and explained the features of A330neo.
After take-off, drinks and dinner were served. I then slept for 4 hours in the new Business Class seat. The seat, although narrow, is long enough for my height (6'1”). After sunrise, passengers were greeted to a scenic arrival into Lisbon International. Most of the passengers were in transit through Lisbon.
At the end of the video, I gave my remarks on flying TAP. I think TAP has some of the best airfares for Trans-Atlantic, if you purchase in advance. Therefore, one of the cheapest full-service airlines in both Economy and Business Class.
Really satisfied to watch this video, half of the world saying bad things about Tap that is not true. You really got really nice pilots on that flight, fantastic to watch, can't wait to see the video about Madeira ✈️

TAP is undervalued, it is one of the safest airlines in Europe and its pilots have always been among the best in the world. Only the experience of landing B-727 on the very dangerous and ultra short old runway of Island of Madeira or Azores in the 70s, shows the greatness of its pilots. I have been using TAP for almost four decades and can only say positive things about this company. I admire the high level of its pilots and the airplanes safety and control, great technicals and engineers. I know about TAP, because this airline travel to Venezuela (my country) since April 1976.

A shame TAP service was still subpar, but at least they seem a lovely bunch.
Nothing is perfect and there is a lot to improve, especially the service. But ask any Portuguese in which company he trusts the most, in the hands of which company he puts his life, and I'm sure they will all give the same answer. When it comes to safety, I'm not just talking about the high quality of the pilots, the fact that the planes are new, but also the high level of maintenance, an aspect that is often not visible to the public. We can discuss the efficiency of the onboard service, but I think you will hardly find anyone who complains about the friendliness of the staff or the quality of what is served on board. I travel with numerous companies around the world, I would place TAP in the first place in safety and in the top 5 for friendliness and quality of the products served. TAP's problem is being a flag carrier of a country with little economic weight in the world context, even so it's not bad to enjoy a secret that few know

I’ve just discovered him through this Sam Chui’s flight. A very interesting character, you’re right! Also as a fan of aviation and Metal music, it has been a great surprise to discover he is also a Metalhead and the host of the biggest metal radio show in Portugal :)
He pronounced Minneapolis really well for someone who’s not from the US. He could have said Minnesota which is also difficult for some USA citizens let alone foreigners. Nice touch.

Captain Venâncio is the “creme the la creme” of portuguese pilots! You were lucky having him on the flight, always ads that personal touch and is very welcoming. Same goes for the majority of course but there’s always those special persons, and TAP is full of them. Thanks Sam! Enjoy your time in Portugal and thanks for flying TAP.

I'm Portuguese and I've travelled many short and long-haul flights with different airlines and I can confirm that TAP is one of the best and with a good value for money compared to other European airlines. And I really like it how they've divided the economy so it suits everyones needs and wants.
I flew TAP from Duesseldorf to Lisabon to San Francisco in February 2019 economy enjoyed food and my window seat of course Port Wine is my favorute. What I liked most is TAP allowed 2 nights 3 days stay in Lisabon I went around the city churches I lived in Brazil so spoke in Portuguese .. Ate lots of Sardines . beautiful city. Traveling in trams going up and down old town Lisbon is a romantic experience. I note copiolot in your tap from SFO to Lisbon was bush pilot in Mozambique .. I was in Maputo couple if months on in assignment ...I love Portugal and its culture language food and port wine. If I travel again to SFO it will be with TAP.
Love TAP. Even left Air France's Skyteam for Star Alliance. It's not perfect but flew all around the world for the last 8 years in TAP.

I've flown on the A330ceo and A330neo many times with TAP, from Lisbon through to several cities in Brazil, and I think they are one of the better airlines in Europe. Friendly crew, good food and no issues. And as you say, their fares are value for money. I have also used seat 9A, in fact I've booked it more than once, and I really like the room it gives you, and the window wasn't a problem for me.

TAP no problem the crew is warm and so generous.
Sam, TP Air 🇵🇹 has its problems with Customer Service, and flight delays being the worst for me. However, for safety and onboard service, it is quite a good carrier. Their pilots are TOP notch. Their safety record is stellar, despite one very fatal accident, the ONLY one, back in 1977 and in the Island of Madeira, where you are heading. That airport scares the crap out of me, and TP's pilots best manage to land there, but all with special FNC training. If you ask me to choose safetywise TP is awesome. Their onboard meals are quite nice, plus free drinks. The crews, not always the best, but not horrible either. It's the flight delays and horrible customer service that kills an otherwise quite good airline.
TAP is not bad,it's one of my favorite airline livery, it's red and green color remind me about nature and sun.
And the colours of the Portuguese flag!

Fun fact: the same architect who designed Golden Gate Bridge also designed that bridge in Lisbon (some call it the golden gate of Europe!).

Yep, João Miguel is in the right here. Both 25 de Abril Bridge and the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge were designed and built by the American Bridge Company.
The Golden Gate Bridge, on the other hand, was designed by Strauss, Moisseiff, Ellis and Morrow, and built by the McClintic-Marshall Construction Co..

man, if you go to see almost everyone says bad about TAP, but then these have never flown on TAP and haven't seen the excellent experience of flying with them! They have a very friendly crew, good food, good landings etc... TAP is excellent company the problem is that the covid arrived at the time of growth of TAP when it was breaking records!😥
Ahm I'm Portuguese, I want to be a pilot when I grow up and I can say this is not really accurate. TAP owns a lot of money and now it has to be powered by the State. Altough TAP is reinventing itself, it still needs to get much better!

Beautifully said, I tell my folks these words everyday, it's good to save money but most people don't understand the market moves and tend to be mislead in fact's like this and always depend on money in the bank.

The editing work on your videos is CLEAN. I can't believe they let you into the cockpit during the flight! Portuguese are more laid back I guess.
Yeah, it’s only the airline with the best safety record overall, precisely because it serves Madeira airport, one of the trickiest in the world. Landing anywhere else is just a piece of cake for TAP pilots. As for maintenance, it is second to none, I happen to know a guy who works there and they are highly coveted in the industry (in fact, they do all sorts of commissions for other airlines while on vacation).
It isn’t surprising in the least that the food and drinks are the highlight, we really take great pride on both our recipes and supplies…
Yep, TAP was indeed hit very hard by the pandemic, and we’re the ones taking the brunt of those losses through our taxes, but it will be for a good cause. Their refocusing on the transatlantic market is obvious and inevitable, if you consider the onslaught of pan-European low-cost airlines - even compared with TAP, you can get flights for less than $100, and sometimes as low as $50 - like Ryanair or EasyJet and the serious push our current government is making on rail infrastructure as a potential alternative for domestic continental flights (TAP being otherwise an essential tool in territorial and economic cohesion, considering it has to serve two Portuguese archipelagos no matter what, but let’s just say flights from Lisbon to Porto will eventually become a frivolous proposition).
By the way, it’s funny that you should mention the similarities between 25 de Abril Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge… Actually, its literal sister is not that one, but it is also in San Francisco, the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge. Both were designed and built by the same company, and you can see they are structurally very similar, with their cross-bracing on the main pillars, despite their different colours. Ours has a distinctive feature, however: the lower deck was fitted with a double-track railway, decades after the bridge opened for traffic, and as such, the bridge required a second set of suspension cables (because the double-decker EMU rolling stock which now runs through it is much heavier than train cars and locos from the 1960s, back when it was designed), an approach which now makes it completely unique in its class.

TAP is great but often underrated. The culture of the company like the culture of its country in understated - if one gets that one enjoys more of it. Relax and enjoy: difficult to get if one comes from a stressed and always demanding more culture. We are all heading to the graveyard and the slower we get there the better it will be 😉

I’ve always been a nervous flyer but I love to travel. Part of my “therapy” if you will has been watching these types of videos to help educate myself. I wasn’t even considering TAP airlines since they seemed so discount, I equated that to discount in safety as well but after seeing this video and reading the comments on their safety record I definitely plan to give them a go. Especially since I love going business and normally it’s so expensive. Wow great video.
As a Portuguese, it´s part of our culture to bad mouth everything that is Portuguese. I guess that you´re friend that told you TAP sucked is Portuguese, right ? TAP has been having, in fact, a bad customer service in the past few years but, in my many flights with TAP, I´ve always had good flying experiences. Time for us Portuguese people to value the good things that we have. GO TAP!

I flew this airline just yesterday, it has been the WORST. Then I found out it’s one of the worst airline. Never on time. I took 4 tap airlines bought tickets early on. Was cheap, so I didn’t complain. But please don’t trust the comments saying it’s good
October 2021 my wife and I flew Miami Lisbon Miami on TAP. It was excellent and the plane itself was one of the cleanest airliners I’ve ever been on both ways! First trip to Europe since Covid so we were delighted to see how clean the plane was and how professional the crew was. We will definitely fly TAP Again.
Tap is my favorite Airline when i go to Belo Horizonte (Brazil)! the economy extra have a more legroom and more recline for free sometimes and the configuration 2-4-2 is unbeatable on a long haul. All other airline use airplanes more big whit a configuration 3-4-3. Morever, starting from lisbon the flight takes about 2 Hours less then Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Rome ecc.. and the price is almost always Lower and finally also allows me not to make a stopover in Sao Paolo or Rio De Janeiro so w TAP!
i feel you can‘t go wrong with business class in the TAP 330 neo - its a very solid product with a very competitive price tag. Only the service could have been faster. But overall really enjoyed it in 2019 when flying from MIA to LIS

I have enjoyed my flights to Lisbon from Newark. It is no worse than any other international I Have flown and better than some. Don't hesitate to fly them and Lisbon is great!

One of the worse I don't know, but Air France is much worse than TAP. TAP is definitely the best way to get between Brazil and Europe. Air France does not believe that Brazilians are human beings.

Great that you have enjoy it ! TAP Neos A330s and A320s interiors have actually been designed (and partially produced) by Portuguese companies from the National Aeronautical Cluster. Cabin service is always top-notch !
Yep, can confirm, I actually had PhD classes with the lead designer from Alma Design, the studio which worked for TAP. They also designed the refurbishment of the Alfa Pendular (FIAT Pendolino) train sets from CP, which was a definite improvement over the original livery and interiors.
Am definitely thinking about booking TAP for my October JFK to LIS flight. Evidently they are now departing New York from JFK’s Terminal 1.
Great video. But according to Airlinesratings, Tap Air Portugal is the 13th best airline in the world and the 3rd one in Europe this year. And it is one of the safest airlines in the world.
