Large Scale F-8 Crusader Flight and Crash! -- Top Gun Invitational 2018

  • Unfortunately, crashing is a part of the game in scale competition and this was one of a couple incidents at Top Gun. This F-8 was a beautifully built model completely designed and scratch-built by David Hudson (not to be confused with the ultimate jets F-8 which is a completely different design to this one). It was a very unique airplane to see and I can tell you from experience flying my JHH A-7, it's a challenging configuration in adverse winds (hence the wing scrape you see on the takeoff). Unfortunately, after the Immelmann manuever, the airplane seemed to go free-flight for whatever reason. He was able to regain control, and fought with it a couple passes, but ultimately the airplane performed that all too familiar death turn and went in. David is in the process of building another that he's documenting on his facebook page ( / dcmodelshop , so hopefully we will see this DCModels design return to the air again soon!

Flew those in Vietnam, 10 knots xwind is maximum on landing and that is a hard limit. Your model here was absolutely amazing. Sorry for your loss.

Very cool, thank you for your service! Very interesting about the cross wind. The model isn't too far off from that either, haha!
This configuration is quite challenging in cross winds.

I used to build scale models from scratch (papercraft is what they seem to call it now) and the F-8 was always a bit unstable with the wing popped up, even more so with full flap. It usually wanted to roll with a roll center near the trailing edge. How did yours handle?

I flew F-8s briefly in the Navy. It was a great treat to see such a beautiful model and tragic to see it crash in the video. The cameraman probably had no control, but it would have been nice if someone had beat up on whoever was running the plane in the background that sounded like an extended fart. What an assault on the ears while trying to enjoy the beauty of the F-8 in flight.
Ah, the F-8. What a pure power machine it was.

Wow! That really hurt my heart. Here is my take why your F-8 behaved as it did at slow speed. I know articulating all those angles on your flaps, slats and wing raise attack angle looks great & scale when displaying for the judges, but just before take-off and landing you should have set them at least at 50%. Those angles work on a full-size F-8, because of its great weight and size. But on a smaller scale, it creates a massive vortex at the bottom of the wing which spills out amplified at the ends of the wingtips making your ailerons aerodynamically inoperable. You noticed how your F-8 behaved well when everything was retrieved, but the moment you set it up to land... Well, you get the picture. I truly loved your F-8 and only hope you build it one more time and follow this advice.

Awesomely detailed model and always entering the unknown when you build something so unique. How true is the first sentence of your description. My repairs skills are pretty good now and always learning new methods. Was wondering if pilot had 3 hands on take-off; stick, throttle and ejection handle. Imagine the last words they heard were "pull up, pull up, pull up."

That was tough to watch. Beautiful model. Seems obvious that there was some malfunction and the pilot did a good job of letting everyone know and getting the plane away from the crowd.
I could be wrong, but it looked like decent skill and very good decision making. It seemed like he was committed to getting the plane on the ground with the large crowd and lack of control.

Full flaps on take off with that cross wind was not good to begin with but it was going great. CG looked good as it tracked through the turns very well. It did look like a brown out, but didn't he have redundancy? I had a bad deans connector cause a crash on landing approach. I heard my Taranis say " Telemetry lost" about 6 feet off the runway and it never said " telemetry recovered. I rebooted it and everything worked as it should, so I can only guess it was the ESC's built in BEC, or the Deans connector.
I just glad no one got hurt because sometimes they head towards the crowd or the parking lot. Still a big shame and painful to see. I hope he narrows it down through data logging. Nothing worse than not knowing what caused it.Oh,,, by the way, My failure was on a 3D printed airplane. Dusty Crophopper from 3Dlabprint.com and let me tell you, these plastic planes SHATTER on the runway. Since I fly jets as well, I knew how important it was to get all my FOD off the runway and will from now on bring a push broom and dust pan with me. LOL
Many happy landings guys. Really appreciate the great filming. Wish there was someone at my field that did that. The guy that used to do it moved. I miss him now! LOL

Potentially he could if it survived ok. It didn't burn, so should be ok.

Oh. Sorry I didn't get it.
As a long time aeromodeller, I wasn't expecting humor about what I'm sure was a devastating incident for the builder of that model.

BEAUTIFUL CRASH! Nice plane and average flying. Wish there had been fire.

Sometimes I watch people fly and I think to myself, is it really that hard to fly a dang airplane?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  6 років тому +1

Actually, precision scale RC flying is much harder than you might think, haha! In this case, the pilot was dealing with radio link problems. After the immelmann maneuver, the airplane just went free flight and he had no control. He got it back, but I'm guessing it went out again which is what caused the death turn.

Bad pilot seen to many great builders who should never fly their creations. So sad 😞
