Today we meet up with a good friend John Overstreet to build and fly two giant foamboard F-18 fighter‘s. With different performance mods, which one will come out on top?! Along with our DIY F-18s, we have needed reinforcements to help us fiberglass our monster 20 foot B-17. Our first flight is just around the corner and it’s time to make this plane strong and beautiful. If you integrated the motors with some “fuel tanks” mounted right on the wing spars they wouldn’t be visible in flight AT ALL…just an idea.
I think John did that with the f-15 it was incredibly hidden

The B-17 is not finished yet, it should be ready in time for the Wings over Edgewater event coming up and will be featured there.. it is coming along very nicely..

It's a shame that you didn't have an EDF on hand! Props are cool, but the sound and speed of EDFs are especially cool with a fighter.

Props are budget option for those who cant afford the edf but love the jet

Absolutely love doing fiberglass building and repair. Mostly cause wherever you go it pretty much stays the same

Please EDITOR. TURN DOWN THE MUSIC when the guys are talking. One of the attarctions of RC flying is the natural sound of the aircraft. I watch these to learn, not to rock out to canned music.

Has John tried a BDF style powerplant on the F-18? If it works, it could be a good third option instead of EDFs or a boom mount. Since you're doing more 3D printed stuff on the channel lately, it might be good to feature the BDF sometime for those who haven't seen it. It's a good fit for jets in this style and more accessible than EDFs.
For the Cobra you guys were trying to do you can successfully pull it off by going just over stall speed and pulling up very sharply.
(I have perfected the technique on those f-18s)
Now we need an F-14 (since there is an F-14 in the trailer, as well as being in the original)

A good tip for setting fiberglass cloth down is use a light coat of spray adhesive to hold it in place 😎👍

The lads would probably have the same problems as the real aircraft had! Aerodynamic instability and too small control surfaces.

crazy idea: create a plane with a car battery and alternator, using wind to simulate the rotation of tires for the alternator to recharge the car battery. it would be a really big plane but ... if it works, the plane would be able to stay in the air much longer and would be incredible... if it works and is possible.

Hey guys! Great builds! You were apologetic about the conventional motors mounted on the wings. I have seen F-18s with large pods under the wings. Not sure if these are fuel tanks or something else. What about building a couple of pods and hiding the motors inside. When the prop is spinning you don't even see it. Would be stealthy (pardon the use of that term with this aircraft).

It would be interesting to see a FliteTest F-18 (2x70mm) go up against a more conventional F-18, say a freeing 1x90mm, and see how they compared in terms of flight performance.

Does anyone know if there are any design features of the build that allow retractable landing gear to be installed? For me the takeoff roll and the landing are some of the most enjoyable parts of the flight experience.

Hi FliteTest, I have a idea for a hole series! Build a actual, real life plane, you could make like 3 seasons with this, one of you would make a pilot's licence and you would build a WW1 style plane, this will cost from 5-15 thousand, but think about the views and subscribers you could get. If the B-17 so light, you Can Put Tons of Battery in the and make ultimative long range FPV Platform
Can you use 40mm 1u server rack fans as EDFs? I have a few that are two stage. The first is a super sharp 5 blade that has a psudo cone and is 30mm in length. The second stage is a counter rotating 4 blade with a shallower angle that is 25mm in length. They can move some serious air.

Next upgrade, integrate the prop rig into an external stores tank/pod so that it just looks like a tanker or Growler.

I punched & subscribed & from what I've seen in video is "GREAT!" I like the way all of you think out-side the box to bring an innovative answer to most of your problems. But I do have a question, "How come you didn't use -Romen Candle's!???:" by building a twin 50-cal in place of that "Blunderbuss Pack" twin cannon, Oooh sure it was fun to watch but I really believe that would have looked & filmed spectacularly.

My First EDF was a Steve Schumate Designed F18 which I converted to edf, F-18s generally love to fly High alpha
