I appreciate Gillian's preserving traditional songs that originated as folk tunes in Great Britain and became Appalachian mountain music....love, betrayal and conflict
There's a lot more to American folk and Appalachian folk music than being descended from Europeans. American folk is considered afro Celtic, and has many of its roots in black and indigenous music...the banjo came from Africa, for example. On top of that, this is just an old style song, it didn't come from Europe. There's a lot more uniqueness to American folk and Appalachian folk than you're giving it credit for.
@@blackthornwhitethorn6679 I agree with much of your comment....however, I DISagree that "American folk is considered afro Celtic"......in my opinion, and we're just giving opinions here, some of the music falls in that category, as many instruments played in "traditional" American music did originate in Africa, Asia and other lands, as did the unique rhythms and syncopation......... I believe the majority of those who emigrated to Appalachia learned their music in Europe and brought that heritage to America........."Caleb Meyer" may well be an adaptation form a European folk "lament".....the American BIues musical form IS directly descended from African music......I think we're saying that this type of music has many origins........
...wow...Gillian and David at the top of their game...those old, obnoxiously oblivious fat dudes in the background sitting stoneface and shuffling stools notwithstanding...nonetheless, a great performance...
She plays rhythm like swinging a dead blow hammer. Awesome. She used to be drummer in a pink band in Santa Cruz.
