  • San Diego Zoo Africa Rocks
Today we will be trekking trough Conrad Preby's Africa Rocks. This area highlights six different African habitats ranging from the seashores to the savanna. In general when visiting zoos we expect to see Africa's big animals like elephants, lions, hippos, rhinos and giraffes for example. The Africa Rocks section of the San Diego Zoo shows us some of the smaller species that dwell here, surviving in the Kopjes, understory and shores. These plants and animals that we will come across thrive in unlikely conditions.
Africa Rocks opened in 2017, and as we will see is one of San Diego's most ambitious exhibits to date. Here we will fellow a winding pathway giving us great views into Africa's unexpected beauty. Many of these exhibits replaced the former Dog and Cat Canyon, which featured exhibits that were built in the 1930's. The new areas opened to the public on July 1, 2017 but was not completed until December 6 of 2017. Africa Rocks was constructed at the cost of $60 million.
Our first habitat is also the oldest exhibits of the Africa Rocks, the African Rock Kopje or sometimes referred to as the Island in the Plain, these boulder-strewn islands of granite rise from the vast African Plain. Weathered by sun, wind, rain and contains crevices, ledges and hollows providing habitat for many animals because of the presence of caves for dwelling, water, plants and a vantage point for predators.
    Kopje Species:
Yellow-Spotted Rock Hyrax, Slender tailed Meerkat, Trumpeter Hornbill, Yellow-Necked Francolin, Klipspringer, Dwarf Mongoose, Rock Hyrax, Serval, Snowy-Crowned Robin-Chat, African Silverbill, Southern Red Bishop, White-headed Buffalo-Weaver, Namaqua Dove, Bateleur Eagle.
Our Second Habitat is the Ethiopian Highlands which rise above the continent, this region of rugged mountains and windswept grassy plateaus is known as the Roof of Africa. This challenging habitat is home to some unique species, including the hamadryas baboons that make their living by scaling the sheer cliff faces.
    Ethiopian Highlands Species:
    Hamadryas Baboons and Gelada
Acacia Woodland, This open woodland is characterized by plenty of sunlight, shrubs, and grasses along scattered trees, which provide shelter and food for the animals that call these areas home. These area includes a large two floor walk-through Aviary.
    Acacia Woodland Species:
Vervet Monkey, Leopard, Gorongosa Girdled Lizard, Congo Tetra, Cuckoo Catfish, Lemon Cichlid, White-Fronted Bee-Eater, White-Throated Bee-Eater, Magpie Mannikin, Emerald-Spotted Wood-Dove, Exclamatory Paradise-Whydah, White-Bellied Go-Away-Bird, Red-Billed Firefinch, White-Headed Buffalo-Weaver, Blue-Headed Wood-Dove, Violet-Backed Starling, Yellow-Crowned Bishop, African Silverbill, Namaqua Dove, Common Waxbill, Village Indigobird, Zebra Waxbill, Fischer's Lovebird, Splendid Sunbird, Taveta Golden Weaver, Snowy-Crowned Robin-Chat, Pin-Tailed Whydah,

The "Great Red Island" Madagascar is sometimes referred to as the eighth continent. This island has been isolated from t African continent for about 160 million years, resulting in its wildly diverse plants and animals. Madagascar has habitats ranging from rain forests to tropical dry forests to deserts, and 3000 miles of coastline. '
This island is home to an astounding 13000 species of animals and plants that are found nowhere else on Earth.
    Madagascar Forest Species:
Fossa, Blue-Eyed Black Lemur, Red Ruffed Lemur, Coquerel's Sifaka, Red-Collared Lemur, Ringed Lemur, Honey Badger.
The warm, humid climate of the West African Forest Habitat, with seasonal rains punctuated by short but intense dry season, fills this habitat with dense, diverse vegetation and animals that thrive among swamps and rivers.
    Species List:
West African Dwarf Crocodile, Madagascar Big-Headed Turtle, West African Mud Turtle.
Finally we come to Cape Fynbos featuring endangered species native to South Africa or in the sharks case, their California Counterparts.
    Cape Fynbos Species:
    African Penguin, Leopard Shark.
Thank you for joining me on this trek through Africa Rocks and San Diego Zoo. -Brad

Both are unique and very well done. I like both zoos takes on their Africa sections. Comparing the two is going to be rough for me as both house many different species

I do plan on covering Seaworld San Diego, that will come later this fall when we start doing on fall/winter trips. Are there any areas that you would like to see from the safari wildlife park? We will be going there as well.
