Wilfried Zaha has been a talisman for Crystal Palace. He has been their go-to man, and they have built a squad around his best skills. But that could have been different if they had accepted the €40million bid from Arsenal in 2019.
Why did they not accept it? Why did they prioritise keeping Zaha? And do they have a similar conundrum on the horizon?
Jon Mackenzie explains. Craig Silcock illustrates.

I'm surprised Tifo made this whole video and omitted the fact that part of the reason Zaha has such a high transfer fee is because of his high sell on clause (25%) to Man Utd. This creates that weird limbo that a club would need to overpay for the fee to ever be enough for Palace to sell a player that's vital to their team and why he was always going to walk for free.

    • @sususegar
      @sususegar Рік тому +184

That explains a lot, Tifo's video quality hasn't been as good these days. Probably a mistake by Palace not to renew his contract in 2021 when they were in a more positive headspace under Vieira's first season.

I'm speaking for every Palace fan here - Zaha's worth to our club is more than any dollar-value transfer. He's been our talisman for the better part of 10 years, and has played a key part in keeping us up. I truly hope we manage to get him to sign an extension, because regardless of how old he is, we're going to struggle the second he leaves us. Not only that, but the 25% sell-on clause to Manchester United is something to seriously consider. In recent years we've invested super wisely. Eze, Guehi, Olise, Anderson are all fantastic players for us and will play a part in trying to push us up the ladder slowly but surely. I just pray we actually decide on an ambition rather than sell these players to bigger clubs for profit.

    • @StuttGooner

This summer might be full of opportunities for Palace:
The teams going down have some very good players to be picked up(KWP, Bella Kotchap, maybe T.Adams, Barnes, Sinisterra, Dewsbury-Hall) and in the Championship are also a few talents that won't make it up. (A.Scott, Piroe, I.Sarr, Swift, maybe even Gyokeres). Plus the clear out at Chelsea and potential Spurs could give Palace even more options. And there's a lot of very good free agent players available for a midtable Prem Club, like Skhiri, J.Bamba, v.d.Boomen, Lerma, Aouar, R.Kent, Morelos. Even if they loose Zaha and maybe Olise for a huge amount (60+ million), as long as they hold the rest together and make only one of them to profit, i think they will be okay, maybe come out even better.

Keeping Zaha at Crystal Palace has been mutually beneficial for both player and club: The former is guarenteed playing time, and has prospered with his goal scoring record, the latter likewise has maintained their position in the top tier of English football and could challenge for better positions (i.e. European slots) in successive seasons. There are plenty of examples of clubs that have fallen apart after selling their star player (e.g. Leeds and Kalvin Philips) and more where that star player has struggled to make it into a different squad, for whatever reason or another (e.g. Danny Drinkwater at Chelsea).

I wish we had more top ballers at smaller clubs... modern day Le Tissier vibes... why is Richarlison a backup waste at Spurs when he would be an adored talisman at Everton... it's better for nuetrals to have more talent on the pitch. I hate City for robbing us of 80 dazzling Mahrez performancea... Gundogen performances... Foden performances that they would've undoubtedly gave us at clubs who nailed them on as starters. When we had Zaha at Manchester United we wasted his career since Moyes also wasted Kagawa on the wing where we could have played Zaha there. One of the few players Manchester United could have turned to legit stars. Without Zaha, Palace no question would not be still in the Premier League. In 17/18 Zaha singlehandedly kept Palace up and I can't blame Palace for not selling him for a long time since he returned. Should Zaha leave on a free, it will be difficult to replace him and at the same time will be difficult for Zaha to play in a Champions League club since he's 30 years old unless Newcastle United qualifies but their qualification isn't secure yet.

This is by far the worst TIFO Football video, it's something that TalkSport would do. Theres no debate to be had, the best thing Crystal Palace have done in their recent history was clinging onto Zaha.
So firstly Arsenal bidded £40 million, what they paid for Pepe is irrelevant as they didnt offer Palace that figure, that is a stupid logic that fans have picked up on.
Secondly, Manchester United had a 25% sell on clause, so United would have got £10 million from Arsenals £40 million offer leaving Palace to try and find a Zaha replacement with £30 million whiich is never hoing yo happen which keads me to my next point.
Palace would have had to use that money to replace Zaha, thete would have been no profit again no-one factors this in, their squad proved they werent hood enough without him as we all remember that awful record when he didnt play.
Relegation, yes relegation. For a channel as articulate as TIFO this factor alone was worth Palace keeping him, Palace had a high wage bill and if they got relegated the would have been constricted to a more toihher FFP and at the time, they had the 17th highest wage bill in Europe, they needed every penny of that Prem money. By keeping him, theyve bridged the gap and now Eze & Olise are ready to takeover.
This video is just gobby journalism to get engagement from the low IQ Football fan who uses narratives without context. Which is disappointing when a channel like TIFO does it

The figure raised when Arsenal already signed Pepe and the season started so Palace would have had to pay more for a replacement but that was because Everton were dragging their feet with an improved bid and the season started. Like I said, Arsenal never offered more than £40 Million. Emery & Zaha's stories on the saga confirms this. Emery said that Arsenal went behind his back and got him Pepe he wanted Zaha but Arsenal thought £40 million was his valuation. Zaha doubled down on this saying that Emery said he wanted him then he heard nothing and the next thing he knew, they signed Pepe. Whether it was 70 or 80 million, it doesn't change the fact that Arsenal walked away from the deal because of the disparity between their valuation of Zaha, and Palace's valuation. They didn't want to waste their time and went for the Pepe deal, which they saw as more favourable. It's relevant information imo

I like the idea that at least all Prem League clubs can have one 'franchise' player like in the NBA, will help the club grow as its basically the idea of a player in which the team can be built on.

I still don’t understand why in this day and age wages aren’t mentioned when calculating a player’s value. It is a known fact now that doing the accounting for a football club that the player amortisation is a linear calculation of transfer fee + wages over the length of the contract.

Mind you, no matter how well their recruitment performs they won't chase any title since there are more compact teams with much better managers. The issue in my opinion is not ending up 6th in a league. Entirely possible if they have an entire year of great form next year. The issue is that their aspiring stars will get taken by teams with bigger budgets as soon as possible and that leaves the team in this entire cycle of JUST participating. If they are JUST going to participate in the League like many other teams not going through relegation woes or chasing titles. I think it makes sense to keep your best players until the value is low.

I feel like crystal palace's situation is similar to poch's southhampton. They were able to recruit well, and retain players for a 2-3 year period of time to shoot up the table and avoid relegation. Only after the manager left and the squad was gutted of its key players did they begin to decline. Zaha has consistenly performed well over the years for palace, and I think that relegation is going to be a risk for any non-top 6 club regardless of who because of increasing competition and money in the premier league. If they could be like Leicester, west ham, wolves or Southampton and manage to have a few good years and European football could bring good memorable years to the club. I think that is good example because all of these clubs have had relative success in the prem and Europe and are all recently threatened by relegation.
In contrast, brentford have obviously done extraordinarily well selling players and using data to recruit and manage their team.
To keep in mind, this is about retaining good players at the club to do well, rather than being like everton, who tried to build an amazing team with no real foundation.

I just worry where Palace would have been without Zaha, his presence can't be replaced when you're a team who don't have the pull of being in Europe. I also look at what happened after Spurs sold Bale and the amount of players that came in, had little impact and no resale value

Zaha is a counter-attack player. His value at clubs in relegation battle is greater than in top flight clubs. He doesn't worth more than 40M to Arsenal but much more than 40M to Crystal Palace.

I think they as a club have benefited greatly from his presence. He should have perhaps kicked up a fuss to get a move sooner. He is a player that could (should) be playing champions league football not worrying about premier league survival. I think he’d do well at a Atletico Madrid or perhaps AC Milan. Maybe by moving to one of the two aforementioned clubs he’d earn less money, but this a talent that deserves to be showcased on a Wednesday evening somewhere! Let’s be honest, I am sure he isn’t struggling for cash.

In these scenarios I would almost always favour keeping a good player and letting them go on a free. The risk to replace a proven quality player is just too high to justify msot transfer fees, compared with the earnings from staying in the league.

Thanks for covering the club I support! I don’t think we “had” to let those experienced players go. It was a choice, and the club had planned for it in advance. It’s fair to say that the players we signed that summer after the clear out are easily some of the best players at the club right now. For me personally, I’m happy we kept Zaha. The only regret is that we didn’t sign Gallagher rather than loan him. Maybe this summer we have another go at bringing him back!

Elyonousi from Southampton and soyuncu from leicester could be decent pick ups for free and would have a resale value as they are what 27-28 even if you sold them after say a season and got 10-15 million you could easily sell to any newly promoted sides as they are desperate for players with premier league experience.
