I've repaired flyline loops by fusing them as you showed in the 3rd method with good results.
It may take a couple of test tries to get the heating cycle (temp and duration) right for the particular line. Find that you can usually see the overlap go "round" in cross-section when the joint reaches the right temperature.
Having a heatgun with a digital temp control and read-out makes it easier.
    Cheers!

Great video. All fly lines are not made with the same plastic formula - some are easier to weld a loop than others, for example I know the Rio In-Touch lines are really difficult to weld and get good results. Personally, I have never broken a welded loop, however I have had them get damaged with abrasion from heavy use. As soon as the line core starts showing, time to cut off and make a new one. Most of my loop welding experience has been with older fly lines that didn’t have a loop to begin with. Using a lighter does work if you practice, but the foil trick you showed with the heat gun is a great idea. You can also buy smaller diameter shrink tubing in bulk spools, pretty cheap. Also, using a section of small diameter running line saved from an old fly line (the back section from a weight forward taper) can be used to make Tenkara casting lines, make a welded loop at the end for your tippet attachment.

Fantastic ideas Barry! I also use old running lines cut slightly above the taper for skagit floating tips. The lighter, i do agree is great for guys that have the “magic touch” 🙂

On my sinking lines I just use GSP 100 thread, do a nail knot and a touch of super glue.

Question: Can you use the heat shrink tubing method to make loops in homemade leaders? It would be pretty slink without any knots. Or would the heat damage the mono?

Interesting question. I honestly don’t know. I have used this on fly lines and sinking tungsten lines with great results. Hopefully someone will see this question and give a better answer than me. That being said, I wouldn’t do it

I tried the nail knot method and when you pull hard it strips the plastic coating of the fly line and breaks. How do I avoid this?

How many wraps is in your nail knot?

@@greenhornflyhorn 5 wraps. And every time it bites into the coating and strips the plastic.

@@skitteryoh9949 i do 7 minimum. Also, if you use thinner mono it can do that but again, more wraps and it will fix the issue. Another thing is when you make the knot, be sure to have about 1/2” of fly line tag when cinching the knot the down. After everything is cinched tight, cut your tag. If all else fails, it could be a bad or cheap fly line. Hope this helps🙂

@@greenhornflyhorn thanks I'll give it a go. It's a terrible cheap fly line it cost 10 pounds on a clearance sale. I've been using the Perfection loop method from your vid today and it works perfect. Thanks again for the info and the great vid.

I use my wife’s hair straightener on low. When she’s asleep.
