      > Ancestry wise it will have catfolk, gnoll, hobgoblin, kobold, lizardfolk, ratfolk, and tengu, alongside three versatile heritages (dhampir and duskwalker)
      I used to follow the Warcraft franchise (it's main product not being a TTRPG but an RPG nevertheless) and I've seen this trend there too. A trend towards playable race bloat.
      In this case, dhampir is a nice addition but lizardfolk? gnoll? hobgoblin? catfolk? RATFOLK?!
      Leaving aside the question of who would even want to roleplay such creatures, having a kitchen sink of too many playable races/ancestries means that the lore of each race is fleshed out with far less care and effort. The lore tends to become more cookie cutter. Less "genuine" and unsatisfying.
      Sure, there are players who don't care about the lore at all, being purely interested in only the gaming aspect of it. But in general, lore is important RPGs in any format. It adds depth to the experience.

    • @Jo-Heike
      @Jo-Heike 2 місяці тому

      @@tiffles3890 I feel like you're missing the history of pathfinder, and its races. Ratfolk in particular are a core race in Starfinder, while gnolls, hobgoblins and kobolds are pretty integral and fleshed out parts of Golarian. Hobgoblins in particular have their own nation state in the inner sea region while gnolls have rich histories with southern nations like the Padishah Empire of Kelesh and many places in Northern Garund and kobolds many times live alongside the other races, tending to sewer systems or otherwise putting their expertise with tunnels to good use. Kobolds are also treated as a core race for Pathfinder organized play.
      The lore for Catfolk is a bit more limited. They have been around since 1st edition. For second they were reintroduced in the Advanced Players Guide and their ethnicities/diaspora were fleshed out in the Lost Omens: Ancestry Guide. They also have their own lore entry in the Extinction Curse adventure path.
      Know less about Lizardfolk. Like Catfolk their primary civilization is in Southern Gurund outside of the main focus of Pathfinder of the Inner Sea region. Still they're present in both Avistan and Northern Gurund in decent numbers.
      You also forgot to mention Tengu. Being from Tian Xia, the secondary focus of pathfinder I also don't know too much about their lore, but they are present in the Inner Sea Region as well and are a part of most ship crews in the shackles.
      Lastly I want to address you question of how would even want to role play those races. The answer is many people. Pathfinder is a role playing game, and many people enjoy diversity when it comes to their fantasy races. That, and while WoW might being RPG role play isn't its primary focus. Now I can't say I know much about the rest of the franchise, but aren't most RTS games of some sort? Still I wouldn't compare Warcraft, and its races to Pathfinder. Most races in Pathfinder are more integral to its primary setting of Golarian than what I would guess most newer additions to Warcraft's races. Most of them have been around for a long time time to relative to Pathfinder and its primary setting's development.

      @@Jo-Heike The Warcraft franchise hasn't been an RTS franchise since more than 2 decades now.
      > hat, and while WoW might being RPG role play isn't its primary focus
      It's a massively multiplayer online ROLEPLAYING game.
      Even if you don't consider dedicated RP servers where player behaviour is restricted by RP protocols, even if you play without strictly roleplaying your character, good background lore still adds flavour and vibe to the gaming experience.

    Hearing about being to be able to make characters of mixed ancestry in the remaster truly may just fully sell me on getting into Pathfinder. As someone who loves writing characters and is the son of a mixed couple it is really cool to see this implemented. It will be so much fun to come up with characters based on this. I’ve been holding out for a while now and I think I have to pick these up now.

    According to both Eric Mona and Jason Buhlman the remaster was only conceptualized after the OGL announcement as it put a direct threat to Pathfinder and Starfinder. A lot of the changes were homebrew from various devs games such as spirit damage and sanctification.

They expect eratta for something OP or other rules concerning running the game. I haven't done pathfinder except for the Starter set so I have a lot to catch up on.
    Did Paizo ever come up with a quick guide to changes for the Starter set concerning the revision rules?

    This was a really cool review of a game system that had won my heart, pretty much since its debut (c. 2010~2009?) ...Truly:: Thank you!
    There are a couple of aspects about the game's new Player's Core that personally disconcert me:
    ▫️(?!?)doing away with ability scores(?!?)
    At this moment, it's unclear to me how it would be (more?) efficacious to construct a character with only modifiers versus base scores that determine said such...
    Also, it just dawned on me that one of the subtle reasons why base ability/attribute scores were endemic to D&D (and the like...and shortly then to other ttrpgs) was that it would provide everyone at the table an immediate 'snapshot' of the NPC's encountered, particularly in non-combat scenes...
    》》 E.g. Let's say I encounter a gigolo (who's also a part-time thug) with a 'charisma' score of 13, in the alleyway leading to my favorite tavern:.. Do I accept his solicitations? Maybe I do... And maybe a short while later (after a few pints of ale in both of us), I then discover that he's clever (Int 13) and quite witty (Wis 14), and so I consider hiring him as a henchman, in the hopes of cultivating him into a retainer...
    ▫️doing away with (the schema of) Alignment
    I myself have always found it easier -- and(?more importantly?) appealing -- than most to grok/process things like Moral Philosophy and Ethics (the bones, sinews, and muscles of a given Moral Philosophy) rendered as abstractions... And that's aside from the fact that I grew up on BECMI and AD&D (Gen-X'r and Proud!😅)
    The only exception within my take, could be with revising/eliminating Lawful Neutral, or as it's come to be rightly called 'Lawful Stupid'😅
    That said, I won't outright dismiss the reconfiguring... I'll give it a go.🙂

    • @natanoj16
      @natanoj16 5 місяців тому +1

      The way you do in character creation is still exactly the same except you just gain +1 modifier pr. boost. There is no difference :)
      Now you will just get the information of 'Charisma of +1' instead of 'charisma of 13' It is simply a removal of the 'middle man' in the attributes :)
      - You can still fully use the allignements for your NPCs. A Devil is still Absurdly evil and will follow laws and regulation. A Demon will still be a rampaging monster of Violence and chaos. :)

    People have rightly pointed out that the schools of magic were a mess, but I really wish they'd replaced them with something _better_ rather than scrapped them entirely with a "What literal school did you go to? These are the spells that were taught there." which just seems like an arbitrary way to keep the _word_ school in there rather than evoking a deep and complex system of magic that would could master with years of study which was the entire _concept_ of the wizard.

      It was indeed a great storytelling device on a cosmic level, but really served little to no purpose as a description of individuals (other than some fun meme templates). Its easy enough to describe planes as aligned with the cosmic forces of good, evil, law, and chaos without that same language cluttering up the character sheet or infiltrating the mechanics at odd angles. Theres a reason I've just written "neutral" on every character I've played for the last 5 years. And I say this as someone whose favorite setting is planescape.

    Is the remaster player core a good purchase for a new player ?

    • @Roll4Initiative
      @Roll4Initiative  Місяць тому

      I think so. It's what new books will be using for rules and it is backwards compatible with existing 2nd edition books. Pathfinder also has a remastered beginner box (we're going to be reviewing it soon) and depending on how new of a player that might be an even better fit

    Edicts and Anenthemas sound like they may be too precise and rigid, subject to rules lawyering by Gamey players.
    People often forget, it is the limits(rules) that help us create awesome characters, not the ability to do anything.

    • @eamk887
      @eamk887 3 місяці тому

      Edicts and anathemas are only important for religious people, if you don't follow any god, you won't have edicts or anathemas, so you don't have to worry about them (except in some rare cases, like if you're a Superstitious Barbarian).

      It was a Huge project as they had to redesign a lot of the website.
      The final 2 books will be much faster to add (Monster Core which releases today and Player Core 2 which releases in August)

    Most would say the hybrid classes are obsolete . However though they were cool playing them in owlcats games crpgs . The OGL Controversy sucks on ttrpgs however ; perhaps it was a necessity to Encourage other companies to be less like clones. I love paizo’s lore and the new concepts are great! Without alignment and ability scores , probably I suppose not needing the old concepts .

    IMO, the best way to update Pathfinder was called Dungeons and Dragons 4e. And in all fairness, the best way to update Dungeons and Dragons 4e is called 13th Age. But to each their own. If you're having fun playing, you're doing it right.

      Well, I'm not sure if you knew this, but Pathfinder 2e is actually inspired quite a bit by D&D 4e. P2e is pretty much 4e, except just improved. I've never played D&D 4e, but I've heard some people say Pathfinder 2e has actually more in common with D&D 4e than Pathfinder 1e.

    Too much of the change to Remastered is just stupid name changes due to OGL fear and now what came in the original core book is split into two books. A waste of money to change to in my opinion.

      Then luckily you can keep using it :) It is a minor part of the game that has literally no mechanical impact.
      Actually it does have a little impact if you want to use good, evil, lawful and Chaotic damage types. But even with alignments you can still just use the new Holy/Unholy traits and Spirit damage.

    13:39 You're a BAD(yeah, that's right I said it and I don't feel bad about it!) GM if you are keeping the GM "secret" from your players! There's NOTHING in there that needs to be hidden from them! In fact I have always encouraged my players, the ones who didn't also run games themselves(though now ALL of my players have now run at least one campaign), to pick up and read the GM books(if the game has them). This will only make them better players!

    • @Roll4Initiative
      @Roll4Initiative  5 місяців тому +2

      I'm all for players learning how to run games. Didn't mean to keep GM rules "secret" from players. Now I do think modules (maybe even some monster stats) are things players shouldn't read unless they enjoy spoilers. But it is nice that the way the book is organized players can access certain info quickly without needing to weed through the rest of the GM book.

      They needed to get rid of all the OGL D&D references so they could sell something that didn't have the OGL. So they did need to do it. That being said, I think that's all they should have done -- really don't know why they made all these small changes. Yes, they should have made the new books more seamless and not seem like you need to get them.

    • @natanoj16
