The fact that Layne was able to sing this well while being high as a kite is a marvel in of itself. This is quite haunting and hard to watch because he's singing as if he knows he's gonna die. RIP Layne 💔 Btw the 'haircuts' thing on Mikes bass was a fun little dig at Metallica who were sitting in the front row, and it was during the time Metallica all cut their hair which looked like they were haircuts that could be on the show Friends - so it said "Friends don't let friends get friends haircuts"
it was good to see Layne after a couple years in the dark but he was just a shell of himself here. RIP. I'd recommend 'It Ain't Like That' live from the Moore, 1990.

Omg, I LOVE AIC and this whole performance was so amazing ❤️ His voice was so mesmerizing & had so much range. You need to see Love Hate Love live at the Moore. That video shows his range so well & how he could really belt it out.

For me this is one of the most touching perfomances ever. Layne touches me so deep here. I hope he found peace and lives in a place where he feels complete and loved.
Bleed the freak and man in the box were way better. I have no idea why everyone requests love hate love and leaves those ones out. It was good, but not better.
@buzzkillington3840 tbh they're all great! I love that performance of Love Hate Love live at the Moore because Layne really belted it out. Some of the levels & noted he hit there are astronomical & not on any recorded version. I'm an AIC head lol and have been since I first heard Laynes voice mixed with Jerry on guitar & Mike 🌟 on bass & let's not ever forget Sean on drums way back in late 1989 or early 1990. I still like them with Will as thwir singer, but let's be real it's not the same.
Layne was messed up that night according to the band. Jerry was also dealing with serious food poisoning during that performance. Amazing that whole show is seen as one of the highlights of their career.
Jerry was a dope fiend at the time too, tho not as bad as Layne. So the "food poisoning" could very well have been him dope sick too

By this time in Layne's addiction his teeth started to rot away a bit. If you are super familiar with his voice, you can "almost" hear a light lisp coming from his vocals. This was his BEST performance as far as I am concerned. He passed away when I was serving in Afghanistan - everyone was totally bummed out. RIP Layne!!

One of the best performances you will ever see out of anything you will ever watch. Loved that man. I listen to this entire album at least once or twice a week.
I watched the whole show live and cried the entire time. I was afraid we were going to lose Layne and it was heartbreaking. I know people who didn't follow them don't fully understand what this did to his fans. When you listen to Live at the Moore, 1990 when Layne was at his peak and this. This is very good but also devastating.
I still remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard Layne had passed.

The Friends don’t let friends get haircuts was for Metallica members in the audience who’d made fun of Layne during their tour. They showed up to this taping with fresh SHORT haircuts.
Hey Cliff, just wanted to start this with; I'm truly so glad that the community was able to beat back youtube's arbitrary bs surrounding your channel and that you're still making content (been watching for years).
If you intend to react to some more Alice in Chains, I'd definitely recommend Nutshell, Man in the Box, and Rooster. Being entirely honest though, a lot of the band's music catalog is really good.
If you go onto watch more live performances of the band, you'll definetly see what the drugs did to Layne when you look back on this performance; he's like a flickering candle threatening to blow out here, versus his explosive and lively performances in the past before the drugs thoroughly ruined him. Still a stellar performance, just very melancholy.

Layne was drug sick at this performance & the band wasn’t sure if he was going to b able to perform at all. So sad looking back on this
He was dope sick and did a small hit of heroine to get through the show I grew up in the grunge era and Layne was the man. He was in his prime when he did the show at the Moore. He couldn’t free himself from the pain. As awesome as this show was it was like watching his funeral. I believe this was his last performance. The long sleeves and gloves were to cover his track marks. He was deep Into his addiction at this point.

So so many treasures when it comes to Alice In Chains. The raw emotions are like a wave coming over you. Layne was one of a kind. Try Man In The Box - totally different but unforgettable! Gone too soon, we miss you Layne.
With as sick as Layne was here this whole unplugged performance was amazing. Nutshell and Would are great songs from this performance.

So beautifully heart breaking!! They gave him just enough to preform and didn’t know if he could do it or not. He had sheets with the words of the songs Incase he got lost. He was horribly drug sick at this point. 💔
I miss Layne so much. R.I.P Layne was dope sick and was refusing to go on, one of the handlers got something, but Layne had already been out and scored. Jerry was incredibly ill from food poisoning. They still did an amazing show.
The best unplugged ever. But I'm bias, AIC is my favorite bands.

Yes, Layne had the most unique, powerful and well controlled voice, never to be reproduced. I think the band as a whole was very underrated. Jerry and his great riffs, Mikes badass bass, Sean so crisp and clean on them drums. Live At The Moore I think was one of the best live performances from AIC.

@CliffBeat....Oh boy did you open a can of worms...lol. Nah, not really, it probably would have come up anyway, every time there's a reaction to AIC from this performance, Layne's state of mind, dope wise, comes up. Shy of members of the band posting a comment, no matter what anyone says, the fact of the matter is, Layne hadn't seen the band before this performance in almost 2yrs, and according to the surviving members, as they've stated in several interviews, they have no idea if Layne was playing it straight or not that night. People at the show said he had trouble keeping his balance and screwed up the words on a song or two, but others close to the band said Layne was trying to stay dope free for the days around this performance, quitting dope cold turkey, or being doped up, share similar side effects. So we'll never know, but as you said, Layne still gave one hell of a performance over all. Great reaction as usual!!
Lol thats crazy cuz...i was born in 82 and i didnt start listing to rock until my mid20s...but this is one of those songs that apperantly everyone listens to...u should check out those old mtv unplugged

Love this song
This song is a love song from guitarist Jerry Cantrell to the love of his life Courtney Clarke. Early pressings listed this as the 12th track on the Dirt album. Later pressings listed this as the 4th track on the Dirt album supposedly to fit better with the band’s desire to have the album loosely tell a story from song to song. On the Unplugged album it's the 5th track.
Songwriter and guitarist Jerry Cantrell said of the song in the Music Bank box set liner notes, “Down in a Hole’s in my top three, personally. It’s to my long-time love. It’s the reality of my life, the path I’ve chosen and in a weird way it kind of foretold where we are right now. It’s hard for us to both understand…that this life is not conducive to much success with long-term relationships."
Once Layne got his voice where he wanted it, it stayed there with little effort. He was always better live than studio version. Layne's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals.
Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne's vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.
Layne's story is more tragic and haunting because you can actually watch and hear him deteriorate over the 12 year span: from the mild use of drugs in 1990 all the way through 1996 when he was deep into a heroin addiction to dropping to 90 pounds by 1998 to 86 pounds when he died in 2002.
Layne was so much more than his drug addiction. He was able to come up with lyrics and harmonies off the top of his head. He knew enough to know that Jerry Cantrell was playing with the wrong people and gave him contact info for Sean Kinney and Mike Starr. He wrote the lyrics for the songs he sang on Mad Season's Above album and drew the cover art for that album. Layne was a genius in his own right. He still was able to figure things out in a snap off the top of his head. Layne just had his demons.
With MTV Unplugged, when Layne finally gave the Okay to do it. They were supposed to rehearse in Seattle but NO one showed up. Sean, Mike and Jerry would show up at different times but Layne would be MIA or Layne would show up for one or two songs and then leave. When they finally got to New York, Sean and Mike had an argument with Jerry because they thought with Layne's condition and addiction, he wouldn't be able to hit the high notes. Jerry was the ONLY ONE who was confident that Layne could do it. When you watch DOWN IN A HOLE Unplugged, and Layne hits that high note, you see Jerry look over at Sean and Mike with this "I TOLD YOU SO!" smirk. Layne did it again on ROOSTER Unplugged and Jerry did that same smirk.
The Unplugged show in 1996 is so heartbreaking to watch because Layne was deep in his heroin addiction (and yes, I know he was doing other drugs on top of Heroin). His liver was damaged and he knew it. He was just high enough to do the show to fight off withdrawal symptoms and he didn't get dope sick. He was such a ghost of himself during Unplugged. (Of course, Jerry had food poisoning) All Jerry saw when he looked over at Layne was his best friend was going to die soon due to the path Layne had chosen for his life. That show was filmed in April, 1996, premiered in May 1996. They did four shows with KISS in June-July 1996, after which Layne survived an overdose and became a recluse. After that, it was a six-year-long slow suicide.
MTV (and the music industry) has more or less blackballed Layne (and yet, they laud over Kurt Cobain every April 5th, because Kurt was the "face of grunge", meanwhile Layne gets a "by the way"). The Grammys went so far as to invite Jerry, Mike and Sean to the Grammy show in 2003 and then refused to put Layne's picture up in the memorial of the musicians who died in 2002. (Or they "forgot" to) which pissed Jerry, Mike and Sean off and they walked out on the show.
The friendship between Jerry and Layne was unbreakable. Jerry NEVER once thought of replacing Layne as the singer while Layne was still alive. He always wanted Layne to sing whenever he had AIC do something. If there were ever cosmic soulmates ... Layne and Jerry would be it. (And by that I mean, they were Sympatico with each other. The way they sang together was a perfect pitch where two voices make one. What you hear and see between Jerry and Layne was a genuine friendship. They looked after each other. When one had problems with a song, the other picked up the slack. They were a team.
Jerry was doing a solo concert in Charlotte, NC when he heard that Layne was found two weeks after he died and Jerry was trying to get through the concert and crying. He did shows between the time he found out about Layne until Layne's funeral because if he had taken a break then, he didn't think he'd want to continue anything later after the mourning period.
Alice In Chains was a band, but they were also a family. They had internal issues just like any family. When Layne died, it was like losing a loved one, a family member, you don't think of the fights you had with the person who died. You defend their memory. There is a reason Jerry wrote NO EXCUSES about Layne and the line "You, my friend, I will defend / And if we change, well, I'll love you anyway."

Yep, even at his lowest point in life, he still sounded amazing - that’s how good and talented he was.
There’s a line in this song where he says “I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth” which can almost be taken literally because he practically lost all of his teeth from his lifestyle at this point. He had a pretty noticeable lisp and barely opened his mouth wide to hide it.
You’ll notice at one point in the beginning of the song, Jerry, the long haired guy, turns back and smiles at his other band mates. This is because they didn’t think Layne would even make it to the show, let alone be able to perform well. Jerry had faith in him though and when Layne nailed one of long, high notes, Jerry was basically looking back to everyone else saying “see, he’s good to go “.
Lastly, the haircuts sticker on the guitar was a playful jab at Metallica (who were in the front row at this performance) because a few members cut their hair and gave up the long haired metal look.

Layne Staley, the vocalist, his death affected me more than any other artists death before and after his. His voice hits my soul like no other, was almost like a part of me was gone when he died. I knew then that there would be no more Staley AIC. How great they would've been today with him is unimagineable. I am glad that the band has carried on with their new vocalist William Duvall and Mike Inez, but it's just not the same. Also AIC lost their original bassist Mike Starr to heroin abuse as well :(

Despite Layne being barely alive at this point it's still such a good track. Haunting but good. He was a recluse, came out for this performance, was high and reading the lyrics, multiple takes in severe heroine addiction and still they managed to get this moment in time. It's always just been sad for me to watch this one
I get so tired of seeing the same comments on every reaction to this song. "Layne was nodding, Layne was high, Layne was almost dead." You people don't have a clue about it. Layne was actually going through one of his periods of trying to get clean when this was recorded. He'd been dope sick before the show, so somebody gave him just enough to get him through. And he lived SIX years after this performance, hardly "almost dead".
Most people know this, I do agree saying he was half dead is inappropriate not to mention disrespectful. There's no denying that during this performance Layne was a shell of who he once was. Do you know I even saw a comment that said "this is the closest you'll ever get to a man singing at his own funeral" not on this particular video. That hit me so incredibly wrong.

The fact that Layne's eyes were just big black circles & his skin was grey might be a bit of a clue that he was fading from drugs. Not sure how you missed that.
It was my first time ever seeing this person. How would I know what they look like normally without ever seeing them before. If I then talk poorly on someone’s look and nothing wrong, I get chewed out by the interweb. To avoid that I just focus on the music and not someone’s appearance 🙏 ❤️

If you really cannot see this then I seriously recommend you make an appointment with an optician as soon as possible.
