Layne was such a gift to music and, to this day, an unmatched talent that continues to be celebrated - as he should! There are plenty of great singers who can ‘hit all the notes’ and belt out some crazy shit, but Layne was on another level. He opened his mouth and his soul took over….and you feel it to your core plucking away at your heart-strings. No matter what song, he reels you in - in a way that you know you are feeling what he is/was in that moment. While his pitch or tone may not be textbook perfect (in the early 90s b4 grunge broke, the radio stations said his voice was all wrong- so a big fat 🖕to those guys), it doesnt matter b/c the way he sings and all of the uniqueness he adds makes him a master at his craft.
We cant overlook Mike (bass) & Sean’s (drums) primal approach that anchors this song down. The intro is very catchy. Jerry (riff lord) is one of the most talented song writers from that era (and still so today). His content is dark and heavy-riffs are sludgy and just plain nasty. His voice is a little more subdued and mellow but somehow makes the harmonies between him and Layne some of the greatest you’ll ever hear.

Just want to say thank you for reacting to my favorite song of all time. No joke, no fooling. I must’ve heard the studio track at the ripe old age of 14 years old. This official video was super-hyped at the time, so much that I avoided it. Finally I gave it a chance and it blew me away. The dark verses, rocking chorus and distinctive outro. (Bass line is in Em.) On top of it all was Layne, still the coolest-looking rock dude I’ve ever seen. Haunting voice and style to spare. This band itself will always be a banger to me.

YES ! More Alice In Chains !!
Love, Hate, Love is a must. Nutshell (MTV Unplugged), Down In A Hole, Man The Box, Rooster, I Stay Away, Sea Of Sorrow, Angry Chair, What The Hell Have I, and Die Young are good starters.
Try Check My Brain, Your Decision, Private Hell, and Rainier Fog for newer Alice In Chains with William Duvall on vocals.

That harmonic change at the end that brings that ray of sunshine isn't just the end of the song, it's the end of the album, so that lift packs an extra punch in that context.
Love me a bit of Alice in Chains, including the three recent albums with William DuVall, who's a cracking singer. I really ought to watch more live stuff with him though, I only really know the studio stuff with him.
The song's about addiction and criticism of addicts, but specifically from the perspective of Andrew Wood (hence "Would?") who was a more flamboyant member of the local scene, and had recently died of an overdose. That's the same Andrew Wood who was Chris Cornell's roommate and whom Chris would form Temple of the Dog with two of Wood's former bandmates to commemorate (which, since you mentioned him, also included a duet with Eddie Vedder on Hunger Strike).
You're right, plenty of melisma in Layne's singing. If you're into checking out live stuff, note that later performances including Unplugged were filmed when Layne's own addiction was getting the better of him so he was lacking the power he had in this song.
As for whether this is a good starting place, whatever floats yer boat! I've seen some people really turned off by this song because of the whole hippy dippy trippy thing (which personally I love as well). My first impressions were from Them Bones and Nutshell, which are kind of opposite ends of their spectrum, but both some of my favourites.

  • @cydrych

Layne Staley is my absolute favorite rock singer ever. And by rock I include every genre from the Beatles to Slayer. This was a good choice for a first listen, I would suggest Love Hate Love at the Moore for your next reaction. Some will suggest stuff from the Unplugged performance but I don’t think that’s a great place to jump to right away. Layne was older in that performance and was heavy in the throes of his addiction. Don’t get me wrong, he still sounded spectacular but having a baseline of his earlier performances might be helpful for you to have before reacting to the later stuff. Of course that’s just my opinion as an old guy who admittedly worships every note that ever came out of Layne Staley’s mouth.

I'm 56 now, and I remember 92 very well.. The 90's were strange. The mainstream media ,showed how happy and content everyone was, but the real truth is, a lot of us young people, (at the time), were still very disillusioned by the 80's. Because many of us still didn't "make it", as society at large expected us to. Alice in chains, Nivara, "grunge" which I wasn't even a part of, but knew a lot of guys that were, and some of them aren't with us anymore. But holy crap man, I felt and still do, what they were talking/Singing about. I've heard Dirt a million times since then, and evey time the small hairs on my arms still rise.... these guys were the voice of of my generation.. It truly warms my heart though, to see you young people, still listening to what I like to call, my generations music. All this division going on now, is pointless and you prove it.

I love how the play on words in the title gives this song its multidimensional theme.
Being that this song is not just about the temptation of heroin (would you do it?) But also about his friend who lost to addiction- Andrew Wood. It really speaks to where that loss left Layne and the band. This song sounds like dirge in a way, but its also hypnotic in how it pulls you in with those base and drum melodies and and holds you there with layne and Jerry's haunting vocals.

Great reaction, really glad you enjoyed it, the entire Dirt album is a masterpiece start to finish, I highly recommend setting aside an hour and listening to it with headphones, eyes closed and no interruptions
As others have said, the performance of Love, hate, love live at the moore is spectacular and really showcases the sharp/flat mood textures you spoke about
Lots of people also love the MTV unplugged album, me included, but that was towards the end of Layne's life, and it hurts seeing him so sick
Great reaction, cant wait for the next one!

@thatmelisakelly oh yes, the 90s were great, as we did sooo many shit that would get you in trouble nowerdays, but there's no real digital photo evidence for it!
A lot of the music was bland shite, but if you were in to something not chart based, you always seemed to gravitate to those others into the same, just like the metal community.
And, yes, a lot of those cool, stylised 90s films had a lot of the edgier grunge music in it. Reminds me of shared houses where officially 5 people lived, but unofficially, we had a count of between 10 and 15 at any time, taking up sofas and mates floors.

can never go wrong with AIC. Their whole albums are vibes. I've seen them live with the new singer, Will DuVall, if you close your eyes and just listen when they perform old songs he sounds just like Staley. With their new music though, he sings in his own style which compliments Cantrell, the guitarist/backup singer main song writer for the band, so the overall sound is still AIC

The backstory with WOULD? ... guitarist Jerry Cantrell wrote the song for Andy Wood, singer of Mother Love Bone after Andy died of an overdose in 1990 just as Mother Love Bone was going to hit big. After Andy died, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament dissolved Mother Love Bone and re-emerged as Pearl Jam. WOULD? as a title is a play on Andy Wood's name. Layne sang the hell out of WOULD? and ROOSTER on the album, official videos and concerts in 91-93.
WOULD? appeared on the Singles soundtrack because Seattle, Washington as big as the town is, musically it's a small town. All the bands that came out of the Seattle scene knew each other and went to see each other play the club circuit. Cameron Crowe was married to Nancy Wilson of Heart and he wanted to make a movie about the Seattle music scene and made Singles where a fictional band, Citizen Dick opened for Alice In Chains. They used IT AIN'T LIKE THAT from the Facelift album and Cameron Crowe gave them money to demo songs... AIC took the money, they demoed the 6 acoustic songs that are on SAP EP and two songs ROOSTER and WOULD? that ended up on the Dirt album. Cameron Crowe picked through the songs and used WOULD? out of the bunch. Jerry thought the song was strong enough to be included on the Dirt album and that's how WOULD? ended up on the Singles soundtrack and the same version ended up on Dirt.
Whenever you see Bad Animals Studios in the liner notes, at the time the album was recorded, Bad Animals Studios was owned by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Nancy Wilson was married to Cameron Crowe between 1986 and 2010.
Drummer Sean Kinney developed that heavy kick-drum at the formation of Alice In Chains. That heavy kick-drum is the foundation of AIC's sound.
Guitarist Jerry Cantrell was fine doing backing vocals on the early songs like the ones they played in their clubbing days and on Facelift like the Call and Return of the chorus on MAN IN THE BOX until one day when he was trying to write songs for the SAP EP and the Dirt album, Layne looked at the lyrics and encouraged Jerry to sing more because after all, they were Jerry's lyrics. He should sing them. When Layne and Jerry sang together they achieved the perfect pitch of two voices making one voice.
Layne Staley's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals.
Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne’s vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.
The Unplugged show in 1996 is so heartbreaking to watch because he was deep in his heroin addiction (and yes, I know he was other drugs). His liver was damaged from the years of drug use. He was just high enough to do the show so he didn't get dope sick and to chase away withdrawal symptoms. He was such a ghost of himself during Unplugged. (Of course, Jerry had food poisoning) All Jerry saw when he looked over at Layne was his best friend was going to die soon due to Layne's choices for his life. That show was filmed on April 10, 1996, premiered in May 1996. They did four shows with KISS in June-July 1996, after which Layne survived an overdose and became a recluse. After that, it was a 6-year-long slow suicide.
Before the show, drummer Sean Kinney and bass player Mike Inez argued with guitarist Jerry Cantrell about whether Layne could even pull off the high notes in some of the songs, which is why Jerry gave them that “I told you so” smirk after Layne hit that long, high note in DOWN IN A HOLE. He did the same thing again when he hit a high note in ROOSTER.
The fact that Sean and Mike didn’t have any confidence that Layne could do the show and Jerry being the only one that knew deep in his heart that Layne could do it because Layne had done so many things against the odds over the years no matter how high he was at the time. When Jerry needed him to be there where it counted, Layne always pulled through.
The entire show was a success because Layne did have a powerful performance despite his condition. He proved to his cynical bandmates that he could still sing the high notes and he pulled it all off beautifully while the same four guys (Metallica) who had mocked him for his addiction sidelining Alice In Chains from ever doing extended tours sat in the front row. The mistakes he made screwing up SLUDGE FACTORY 8 times even though the dvd only shows 1 time (and I think he screwed up GOT ME WRONG once or twice, but Toby Wright didn’t keep that in editing) were endearing, at least to me. They didn’t take away from the performance, it added something to the performance that, had it been removed after everyone had seen it, wouldn’t have made the show what it was.
Knowing what Layne was capable of before, and what you see on Unplugged is the difference between night and day. Watch him sing DOWN IN A HOLE and knowing that this was the same guy who back in 1992 was hanging from the rafters of a low ceiling in a bar belting out LOVE HATE LOVE, that is what's heartbreaking. Knowing how he sang ROOSTER in Tilburg, The Netherlands, in 1993 when his “yeahs” and screams were so loud and high I’m surprised the rafters didn’t come crashing down around him and then watch him sing the same song so low-key on Unplugged knowing he could do to the song what he did in Tilburg is heartbreaking. Knowing he initially sang the hell out of WOULD? on the official video and album and seeing the end of WOULD? on Unplugged . . . and knowing how deep into his addiction he had gotten by that point is heartbreaking.
Mike Starr (who is in the video) was the first bass guitar player. He left the bad after Rock in Rio January 22, 1993 (long story). Mike Starr was the last person to see Layne alive on April 4, 2002. They had an argument and Starr left. No one noticed Layne had died on April 5, 2002, because he never answered the phone nor opened the door. It took inactivity over the span of two weeks for his ACCOUNTANT to notice something was wrong and called Alice In Chains manager Susan Silver who called Layne's mother to alert her to the situation who then called 911 on April 19, 2002. Mike Starr died of a prescription drug overdose on March 8, 2011.
And to pour salt in the wound, MTV (and the music industry) has more or less blackballed Layne (and yet, they laud over Kurt Cobain every April 5th, because Kurt was the "face of grunge", meanwhile Layne gets a "by the way"). The Grammys went so far as to invite Jerry, Mike and Sean to the Grammy show in 2003 and then refused to put Layne's picture up in the memorial of the musicians who died in 2002. (Or they "forgot" to) which pissed Jerry, Mike and Sean off and they walked out on the show. Though I do applaud MoPOP including Layne Staley and Mike Starr when they inducted Alice In Chains in the MoPOP Museum of Pop Culture. It's more recognition of Layne (and Mike) than the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (thanks to Rolling Stone's criticisms of Layne and his addiction) and the Grammys (who FORGOT him when he died) have EVER done.
Layne's story is more tragic and haunting because you can actually watch and hear him deteriorate over the 12-year span: from the mild use of drugs in 1990 all the way through 1996 when he was deep into a heroin addiction to dropping to 90 pounds by 1998 to 86 pounds when he died in 2002. Layne kept his humor and wit even to the end of his life.
All the information above has longer, deeper stories, and I could say so much more, but UA-cam has a cap on comment length. In the end, it all boils down to: Layne Staley deserved better than what he received from the people around him who he thought mattered. He wrote songs about things with maturity and knowledge well beyond his years. He didn’t deserve to be turned into tabloid cannon fodder by the press.

That little wooden rattle sound effect you liked near the beginning is called a vibra slap II made by the LP (Latin Percussion) company ...used in many a song.Probably most famously in Ozzy's and Randy Rhoads song Crazy Train. It is a cool and funky little mounted or hand held percussion instrument. It has a ball mounted on to a curved piece of wire with a small wooden box at the other end with some kind of rattle in it. You hit or slap down the ball end to get the whole contraption to slap back and vibrate rattle.

Well, YES, of course I LOVE AiC. They hit the music scene, when I was fully active, some guy in the studio handed me a CD - "You have to listen to THAT!" And he was so right. I had to.
A few years later I had an experimental 3-man band project, and we decided to cover "Them Bones!" and "Rooster" from them to see, if it works out to do harmony vocals while playing. And MAAAN, this was difficult... I loved AiC even more, for that!
I still watch out what they do today, I loved "The Devil Put the Dinosaurs Here" for the title alone (making fun of 'murican creationists), but hey, I think they hit another nail on the head perfectly for me. I still love their sound after Layne Staley, too. Because they still have fantastic songwriting, this brutal stoner groove with great harmonies and catchy hooks, and again - fantastic vocals and vocal harmonies. Love that!
Song tips from that album: "Hollow", "Stone" ... whatever - they never suck. It's impossible.
They are just as important as Pearl Jam in my opinion, when it comes to influential bands of that grungy era. And they also have their own fingerprint on the music, even without Layne Staley, which makes it easier to survive as a b(r)and, after the Grunge hype was over.
Otherwise: Yeah, my dudette, I would share my meds with you happily, as requested, if there wasn't a Brexit, LOL, which makes it easier to end up doing something illegal, I guess. And I am such a law-and-order type of guy. Not.. But I happily share the meds names, which is all I can do for you right now...
Bupropion for that AD(H)D focussing and against depression, essentially the mild amphetamine from the Kath plant, Gabapentin for wellbeing, off label for mood stabilization with Bipolar Disorder Type I (like Mel Gibson, but without antisemitism. I love to make that joke...), and it helps also with Cluster Headache ("suicide headache", I guess that name says it all...) and last but not least, my favorite benzodiazepine, the old trusty Bromazepam, on occasions where the other stuff is just not enough ... All that good stuff that you better use responsibly, so you don't get addicted, esp. the last two. Which is not a problem for me, I use these for decades without addiction or upping doses. Not everyone can handle that. So, you know, why the pharmacists looks at me suspiciously. Hehe. But, well, there is an indication for all this stuff, so what?
(Of course, I still have a pack of Seroquel for safety. No, not for bad trips, but people like me can have psychotic symptoms without swallowing shrooms and LSD. Some people think it's funny, and yes, it can be, but not if it hits you without warning ... I prefer not to have these "enlightenments" anymore, I already know all this stuff about life after death (there isn't any), the white light, and how the prophets feel. I prefer to interpret it the atheist way nowadays and try not to have all this. ;-) )
Yepp, I feel much better without hard drugs and alcohol, I had to deal and survive with heavy me(n)tal stuff for 39 yrs without diagnosis or meds. Of course, you try to medicate yourself with "something" intuitively... That was long enough, I guess. Sometimes I decide to have an out-time off meds, but I am my own boss, have no family or kids, and therefore I can do what I want. I always come back to the meds that work after a year latest. It's the better version of me and much less stressful ... 😀
So, sharing is caring, that's also correct for knowledge IMHO.
Awww, you put videos out like there is no tomorrow! I barely can keep up. Guess what? I LIKE that.
Oh, and yes, you should at least earn SOME of the money, because you create your own digital content that is worth the music citation...
But, well, life is hard. You know that. Making money with music or knowledge? What a CRAZY idea, right? What comes next? Earning money with intelligence and competence? 🙂
Love you babe (yes, that's highly inappropriate, and that's why I wrote that), keep up having fun with music and recording and performing and living and all that good stuff. And never take things seriously! Especially not my comments! I am known to produce some comedy gold willingly - and unwillingly.
    Best regards, Melisa! 🤘😎❤

@thatmelisakelly thank you, it still hurts like I'm 10 years older than her. She was just starting life & engaged to get married & moving up in her career. I've done all the things. It really hurts every day. 5 years ago I lost one of my best friends from like when I was 19, he helped me get out of domestic violence & he was the one who was like "hang on, sing that again" & told me I had a voice. He had done music a long time, even played with Jeff Buckley when he came to Australia. He would play guitar & we would let rip. And I've lost a cat every year since 2016 so yeah it's been a lot. What is happening in my life reflects what I feel like singing. It's a lot of car karaoke cos I drive a lot. I learned to growl & guttural stuff which is great to get everything out. But sometimes you just need to belt. My neighbour actually came over & told me that she loves hearing me practice so that's kinda cool.
Thank you for your kind words

The absolute SOUL of grunge (or music in general, which is glaringly lacking in today's day and age) is what Layne Staley was. The lyrics of virtually all of their songs are so beautiful and haunting. And the drum fills at the end of this song are top notch and pack a huge punch. If you are just getting into Alice In Chains, then you MUST do reactions to these songs:
Love, Hate, Love (Live at the Moore 1991)
Shame In You (criminally underrated - put the lyrics up, too!)
    Brother (Alice in Chains Unplugged)
    Nutshell (Unplugged)
What the Hell Have I (w/ lyrics)
    Junkhead (live)
This is the starter kit for you. But all their songs are amazing. I recommend listening in that order. Great channel, by the way!
