What We Miss Most About Living in Mexico

  • There are pros and cons of living in Mexico as an American. Kat and I just returned to the USA after spending 5 months in Mexico. In this video, we share the things we miss and the things we like better about life in the United States.
If you’re thinking about moving to Mexico, be sure to watch this video to see if these little barriers will be too much for you to overcome. From allergies (or lack of them) to Street Dogs, Pumping Gas to Mowing Grass, Gardening to Goodwill. You might not think about these little things when moving to Mexico.
For me, if I had my choice, I’d still be a part-time Mexico resident. But I’d spend 9 months per year living in our house in La Paz Mexico and 3 months per year living up in Oregon. But I’m married.
If you already live in Mexico, what are your pluses and minuses of life in Mexico? Leave those in the comments below.

I'm from the PNW north of Seattle and we moved to Nashville TN 6 years ago. I do not miss the 9 months of overcast skies and drizzle but I do miss the lush moss and fern covered forests. The biggest thing I miss about the PNW is our families. Since moving here I've discovered I love the heat and I don't mind the humidity either.

I think we've found a good mix by living half time in Mexico and half time in the PNW. Better would be missing all 9 months of the rain and overcast sky in the PNW!

Visited La Paz recently and really enjoyed it, would consider more time there. I’ve lived overseas as an expat and it can be pretty cool - no longer beholden to our homeland’s expectations while also not really expected to act like a native in the new land. It can be a nice, liberating mix. Having said this, La Paz felt very familiar. It felt a lot like going to a local park here in CO USA on a Saturday. The Mexican culture has become a part of USA culture. In La Paz it felt natural for us expats to become a part of theirs.

Hi Brighton, I just recently found your channel. I live in Portland, Oregon as well (Lake Oswego) and am trying to convince my girlfriend that we should consider Mexico as well. It’s scary how much the financial requirements are going up each year. Its pretty much gotten to the point that people retiring only on social security and no other pension or substantial assets can meet the economic requirements.
Thanks for all the great content.

Hey David! Nice to meet you. The financial requirements have gone up a lot recently due to minimum wage going up and the peso getting really strong. I recommend getting your residency as soon as possible. You only need to be in Mexico for about a week to get your residency. It's a great "backup plan" even if you don't move to Mexico.

I miss almost everything about our home in Mexico when I’m in Toronto. Fortunately, even in Toronto I regularly speak Spanish in both my personal and professional life. (My husband and extended family are Mexican, and our social circle is from all over Latin America.) I miss the near perfect weather, the fact that I spend most of my day outdoors in Mexico, the abundant flowers and greenery where we live with visiting butterflies 🦋 and birdsong in the surrounding trees. I miss the culture and community (we have family and mostly local friends in our town in Mexico). I even miss the roosters and Rufina the burra next door braying in the middle of the night (OK, that’s just nostalgia talking… I like Rufina but don’t miss being woken up by her - although after a few nights back I find I tune her out.) The smells, the sounds, the tastes. I miss it all. What I don’t miss is having to be super careful with rationing water. We are in a water-stressed area, and by this time of year the local water sources are running dry. We have to supplement our collected rain water with pipas (trucks which deliver 10,000 L of water to our cistern), but in April & May until the rains start again, it is harder and more expensive to get a pipa to come. We are really careful with our water throughout the dry season (Oct - May), reuse the grey water, take short showers, etc. In Toronto I am still careful with water, but I don’t need to worry about it running out.

Though we don't have a place in Mexico yet, I agree with all your pros and cons based on my experience. I don't know if this happens to you, but people living in the US often react very negatively when I mention spending time in Mexico. They perceive it as extremely dangerous. Meanwhile, yesterday there were like 5 mass shootings in the US... I think the hardest thing for me in Mexico is the situation with street dogs and cats. It's really painful to witness and I try to help. But since I live in a rural area of the USA, we have a lot more stray animals than there are in a place like Portland. And we don't have curbside pick-up of recyclables in our area either. Portland is very progressive! One thing I don't like about Mexico is waiting in line for stuff! When you said you had to describe where you live in Mexico is how it was done in many areas of the US not that long ago. I had a friend who used to live out in a rural area, and her address was on a road and the address included the nearest cross street and how far down the road from the cross road to reach the house. I also have a friend who lives in Guadalajara and in the condo facility she lives in. They have do have specific bins as to where recyclables, garbage and compost items are to be placed. But overall, it isn't as prevalent throughout the city.

That's a great video idea! I'll add it to my list. But the gist: we have a caretaker that we pay about $100USD a month while we are gone. He lives in our casita and just does simple stuff like checking inside the house, making sure the irrigation is running, etc. If a hurricane comes, he'll take furniture inside and also mop up any water in the house. Mostly he's there to be a presence on the property. Plus we have security cameras and an alarm system. We pay all our bills remotely online. And we store all the "good stuff" which isn't much as we live pretty simply, but is mostly bottles of tequila.

@paulfry7378 I grew up in Wisconsin, so I've been hearing about the crazy weather from my sister in Wausau. I've got more video footage than I know what to do with! I'm working on setting up my computer in Portland. But I realized I left the power cord in Mexico (and or course it's not the one that every other computer uses...) But the good news is that Amazon just dropped it on my porch. About 8 hours after I ordered it! If I'd made that mistake in Mexico... I'd be without a computer for a week.

I really enjoy your videos!! I'm from both Oregon and Washington and am seriously considering retiring somewhere in Mexico in the not-too-distant future. I keep going back and looking at La Paz as well as Loreto. I'm sure there are hundreds of cities and towns that would be possible locations, but have looked at the main cities where expats congregate. I'm attracted to La Paz for many of the obvious reasons. I might be concerned about water supply there it sounds like. Anyway, thanks for creating these great videos!

We live in La Paz, which is really a desert. So the problem isn’t Mexico, but the location where we live. The soil is bad, there are gophers that eat the roots and water is scarce.

Mexican authorities don’t really care where you live. You can get permanent residency and never go back to Mexico.
