Malaysia's Young Farmers Venture Into Agriculture With Premium Tropical Fruits | CNA Correspondent

- Malaysia hopes to boost its exports of premium tropical fruits by cross-breeding high-quality strains. The golden rock melon is the iconic fruit of the state of Terengganu. It can fetch a market price of about 10 US dollars each. Another hybrid - the 'nangchem' that hails from Selangor's fruit valley - is fast gaining popularity. In the northern state of Perlis, the aromatic 'harum manis' is now the most expensive mango variety in the country. It is regarded as among the finest in Southeast Asia, if not globally. With the promise of lucrative returns from their efforts, a new generation of young farmers has been inspired to venture into the agricultural sector.

So many sour grapes here envious of enterprising Malaysian farmers with the potential of growing Malaysia's billion dollar fruits industry.
Billion ringgit
Singaporean news channel provides better documentary and news coverage about Malaysia than own media
Great
Indeed…
As a Singaporean, I just want to say who cares. This is called Channel News ASIA. Better or worse, it doesn't matter. As long as it's informative and interesting.
That's because you don't watch local news.....you don't understand...and you said others better.....I watched both.....and it same format just that 2 different languages.
As a Malaysian, these CNAInsider I have to admit.
Im glad to see Malaysian who are passionate with agriculture able to continue their dream career ❤
Malaysia having plentiful rainfalls with tropical climate all year round have excellent potentials in agriculture, including exporting to Singapore primarily and secondary to big China.
Now this is how Malays should go developing
As a Thai, I think this is a great initiative ~ similar to how Japan can market their fruits as premium.
Hope we will getting better at suppling local market with our own food.
All the best gone down south oredi, local eats the balance not so nice ones,😂😂
To all those bitter Singaporeans critical about Malaysia's efforts here, remember each country has their up and down cycles. The Romans, Greek, British Empire etc. Dont think that Singapore will be successful forever. Eventually the throne will shift. So appreciate your neighbors. They might be better than you one day. 😊 ✌️
They became 'rich' due to the currency mate.

@caseysteven8302
What makes you think that most Singaporeans are critical bitter about Malaysia's efforts and also that they think that Singapore will forever successful. Or you give this comment because you are jealous of Singapore success over these past few decades.
Msia is a beautiful country
@@Paul-H-Wolfram6608 Um... Maybe from most of these comment threads?
Good melayu now starting to grow assorted fruits, I worked in kertih and Paka almost eight years seldom see fruits growers but limited
Congrats Malaysia, proud of you, i hope we can collaborate in near future.

We would like to thank you for all your support. 😊🙏
Good luck and all the best to those farmers.
Wonderful to see this our own farmers growing this beautiful fruits. Well done.
Good job Singapore to show this. Even Malaysian don't really take notice of this
Because these premium fruits are for export mostly
Great job Melissa
Appreciate. Good Job Ms. Melissa.

Wow next visit to KL I must look out for these fruits!
I love juciy melons ❤
💀
Delicious!
Go back to FARMING !
Lots of land are left redundant & under utilised!
Sad to see !
Harumanis mangoes worth every cent. Now Singaporeans can head north to eat this great fruit.
Can we get the addresses of these farms. I would love to visit. I love fruit picking. The ones I visited have been dismal so far

when i see the shiny watch while the farmer is putting on his glove.. maybe farming is not a bad trade?
Work with food scientists to get some research done into the health benefits of the melon manis. Get folks to create good recipes in salads etc
Harum Manis (translation Sweet Scent) is very hard to plant and bear fruit but it's very very nice to eat.
Actually those melons are already sold in Japan and China and they sell very well as they are cheaper than the Japanese ones and sweeter.
Why Nangcem? Why did the Nangka come before the Cempedak?
sounds like a chemical product.
Why not a Tarap or Terap hybrid with Nangka? 😮
NANGka + CHEMpedak, become nangchem
They was already hybrid call cempedak nangka since 80s.
My question was why did the nangka come first... why not cemnang?
@@Arcueido Cemnang definitely sounds better. Sounds more Malay-ish.
i think harum manis is the hardest. it only grows in perlis and only some specific locations. it only available in 1 short season. ive been to harum manis plantations before sorry to say the way the local farmers taking care and nurturing the plantations is very meticulous and not easy. some of the farmers facing alot of problems from trespassers too. some will destroy the plantations due to personal grudges and envy. yet the perlis farmers still keep going pushing their harum manis plantations. big respect..
Singapore investor are welcome to Borneo Sabah Sarawak, explore and create opportunities for both countries.
harvesting a floating fruit
How young he is?
yess..sell higher more food crops, not commercial crops. We need better food security
Wish them luck :-)
Terengganu english accent is iconic!
"Cempedak nangka" and nangchem is the same?
Same, nangchem is the same shorten from nangka chempedak.
Hutan malaysia masih luas boleh bnyak terokai buat kebun ....
A big no to cut forest just to accommodate farming. banyak ja tanah terbiar belukar yang tak diguna boleh ditukar kepada kebun. kebun bandar pun konsep yg boleh diperluaskan. just save the forest for our future generation
Would!
Wow i did not know there is nangka + chempedak
Should check it out,too bad i live in the US.Hopefully, when i go back for a visit and be able to try out all the yummy fruits!
Hope nangchem can be more affordable.

That sustainability consultant definitely fibbed on her CV lmao
We indian had the lemon too
Malaysia should try farming. we are underpopulated nation anyway so theres a lot of empty land waiting to be used somewhere here in Malaysia.
it is already cut off the tree. why you cut it again ?
Growing hybrids thats more than enough to know how people projected to eat sugar n nutrients less food.
Malaysia needs to boast agricultural field not only focus on palm oil only...also should produce own fertiliser...we have so many land
Singaporean businesspeople should invest in Malaysia food security especially after COVID ... Believe me Johor is the next big thing ...
BASICLY SINGAPORE AND MALAYSIA HAVE MORE COMMENT BACKGROUND COMPARE TO INDONESIA OR THAILAND WHICH IS TOTALY DIFFRENT WORLD HUHU
Since when did Singapoleans become Americanized? Selengor instead of Selangor 😁
Sister you are soo beautiful ❤ from Bhutan 🇧🇹
We call thi melon in Bhutan and it is growing very fast
Am looking for hybrid Nangchem seeds, am based in Uganda, Africa , I want to introduce it in Uganda for export

I finally got to taste the real harumanis mango, and I must say it is the most unremarkable mango grown in Malaysia. Don't know what the hooha is about.
Farmers getting seeds from thailand. Big money.
didnt know michelle yeoh is in the fruit business
Honey jackfruit and musang king to me are just too good. King and queen of indulgent fruits. Worth splurging once a while. Harumanis and that melon….they good but not worth the premium price. Regular mangoes and melons are almost if not equally good
asking in English, answer with bahasa.. its a Malaysian thing for sure. for the foreigner.. good luck understanding that..
You need learn that not all country see English as main language, so stfu
Malaysian are proud with their national language just like Germany, Japanese, Korean, French, are proud with theirs
It's our own identity
Malay worker, chinese owner.
The monkeys unable to open the mango wrap?
I am sporean, i always admire Malaysia having their own local true brands and products like Farm Fresh. Whereas in singapore, the govt here always talk big! They talk about food security, but never walk the talk, only just a speech. I wanna laugh when spore govt promote agriculture and food security. The pampered and arrogant ministers here will always choose the easy way out, ie buying and outsource from/to other countries.
But Singapore has limited land. How is it possible to do large-scale farming in Singapore?
@@noraffendi5232 this shows you dont know anything about farming or agriculture, and your thinking is backward. Anyway this is not the point. The point is dont boast and talk big when you cannot fulfill. Dont talk big about food security by 2030. The only thing singapore ministers are good at is choosing the easy way out and replicate success.
Agriculture generates profits.$$$ maybe million dollars?
Are we Singaporeans doing as much effort as Malaysia to be self sustainable? If not, just shut up! 😂
Bela kucing pun kena bayar. Huh
Good man , but the sleeping staff should be sack !
Durian is the King of the Fruits. Yet in Malaysia you make no attempt to grow the proper varieties grown elsewhere in the region. In Sarawak, the local product is knowingly sold as zero flesh as clearly dictated by west Malaysia who can raise their import prices accordingly. Too much corruption to change anything
There's no such thing as premium fruit, or food..... There's only marketing strategy. Food is still food.
Premium just means more $$ per kilo..
Just tell that to the Japanese
You seem sooooo naive 😊
Everything has a premium. Marketing also makes it premium but you cannot dispute that an iPhone or Samsung is still premium handphones compared to others. Toilets in malls on certain floors which require a fee are also premium. Whether or not the price, justifies the experience, depends on the user.
A Musang King is premium. A durian kampung is not. But it doesn't mean that a durian kampung doesn't taste good.
Try a Korean/Japanese muscat and an ordinary grape. You'll know immediately what the differences are. Again, whether the price justifies the experience, varies for every one.
I get your point. At the end of the day it all comes out from the other end 💩
So? Citizen can't enjoy it anyway. All good fruits are for export
Eh, local boleh belilah, boleh order online direct send to home.
@@hawaandroid2786 you tak faham langsung
I don't really think harum manis is the best of mangoes! I'd better ones!
Couldn't even produce onion for local malaysia market - wanted to export fruit somemore
Onion no margin
What are you talking about....? Perak is the first homegrown onions in Malaysia.
At least we can produce our own food, unlike you.
Onions aren’t fruits
You can't diffeniate veggies an fruits.
Nangchem=Nangkadak
Harum manis mango originally came from Indonesia ponorogo. its not native to Malaysia
That's what I thought, like wth. If I remember correctly, it was helped by IPB Bogor researchers decades ago.
But, it's nothing surprises me since we talk about Malaysia here.

put an GI tag and it immediately become premium golden melon? what a joke. there's plenty of melon variety from japan, china and thailand that are similar to mmt but selling at normal price.
Occasional envious Chin Chong, ah c’est la vie.

M'sia also tried producing premium cars, but the result has been disappointing. All m'sians must unite to make m'sia less disappointing.😂😂
It’s okay, we will excel in other industries. Microchip is a hot topic nowadays.

Sour grapes from little red dot, you are less significant nowadays. Keep living in squander hdb flat while we enjoy farming and gardening.
How long can the malay muslim farmers from Islamist Terengganu keep producing Golden Rock Melon for the markets in KL, Penang and Singapore? only time can tell.
Racist bastard detected
At least they tried and successfully produce something, unlike certain couch potatoes who can’t differentiate between a watermelon and melon.
Idiot racist is back.
What does their religion have to do with the production of melons?? Leave the religion out of this please. Don't be a sohai.
What have you got against Islamist Terengganu ???
