Hello! I’m A-Plus of SOM/Hiero, the producer of 93 til Infinity. First, let me say that this whole breakdown is awesome! I really appreciate all of it. Both stories of the sample discovery presented are true, combine them both for the full story. The original sample for 91 til Infinity was “So Far Away” by The Crusaders, from their 1971 album Crusaders 1, a great album. The 808 in the 93 til beat was sampled from a hip hop record that left an open 808 in the song, it’s where many producers of the time sampled their 808 from, but I won’t disclose what song, to avoid the sample clearance vultures. The same is true of the shakers present in the 93 til beat, I’ll never tell lol. Lastly, the 93 til beat was made on an Ensoniq EPS 16+, not an SP 1200, but the sample principles described are accurate regardless. A little recognized fact is that I added a chorus effect to the main loop in the track, which added significant warmth to it. Also, I created the appearance of delay on the two horn samples using a loop and sustain technique, due to not having enough effect capabilities on the EPS. Thank you very much for this presentation about our song! We are grateful! Bless Up! A-Plus
Thank you so much for the comment and for the additional information, pinning this comment for the record! And thank you for making such incredible music, it means so much to so many people 🔥
@@kohort1 somebody got it ☝🏽 the analogy was they’re both freestyle favorites, jazzy, and hard. This is in hindsight of course. Which makes sense cuz the entire Heiroglyphics crew were freestyle monsters! They were the west coast Wu-Tang, if Wu-Tang was more like ATCQ.

I’m going to have to disagree. 93 to infinity is the west coast equivalent to ATCQ “check the rhyme”. If you want “shook ones” equivalent you’re gonna have to look into anything Dr Dre had on the chronic
One of greatest hiphop tracks of all time. Damn now I'm reminiscing about my youth with a tear in my eye. Thrown back 27 years at the drop of the beat.

This song is “Our Song” with my wife. It was the year we started dating. It was one of the first songs we danced to. So much so that we have matching 93 ‘Til Infinity tattoos on our wedding ring hand.
Hearing the opening synth of this track is like feeling the warmth of a Californian summer sunset on your face, it’s watching family footage of a summer barbecue on old VHS tapes, its that first t-shirt day in the spring, it’s just an unbelievably positive nostalgic vibe. There isn’t anything as comforting as ‘93 till infinity and that’s why it’s one of my favourite tracks ever, Waves by Freddie Joachim is the only other track that has the same vibe, both completely timeless till infinity ❤
That video being out in nature was one of the most memorable things about that song Most hip hop vids were in grimy street settings and that was a huge difference with this one to me
This is one of my favorite and dopest HIPHOP beats I've ever heard and it's so fresh since 93'. I'm a 46 yr old HIPHOP head from Staten Island (Parkhill section) and I listen to this song 🎵 like almost every other week, it's has a nostalgic feel to me. I work out to the instrumental also, that's how dope this song is and what it means to me. Time to give it another listen....from 93' til Infinity
This song is so legendary. Every time i hear it it takes me back to simple times. I can literally transport myself back to that time. The fact that it originally was done in 91, redone in 92 and dropped and redone again in 93 and has lasted almost 30 years is amazing.
My parents split for good in ‘93. This song used to take me to a different place. I used to walk around Oakland feeling like nothing was bad for about 5 minutes. Then I married Phesto’s cousin and let’s just say meeting one of my heroes growing up was a great experience. It’s weird playing pickup basketball and trying not to fan out 😂
The real reason why this song will always sound classic is because the sounds used evoke a reminiscent emotion. The beat will ALWAYS make you think back to your youth, no matter what the lyrics are saying.
Heiro Day in Oakland is prolly the best ever hip hop festival almost nobody outside the Bay Area knows about. Met Tajai a few times from opening up for him and was the most down to earth intellectual dude from the hood I’ve ever met. Also, glad you clarified how different the Bay and LA is. It’s hilarious when someone from the east coast asks you to meet them up in LA when you’re 400 miles away in the same state 🤦🏻♂️ lol
This song compressed the feel of the 90s and archived it to this day. I cant even describe the feeling i have, listening to this. It's a timemachine, and on the same hand it hurts seeing how fast times running.
I get teary-eyed every time I heard this song--it does, indeed, capture an era, especially for those of us in our twenties at the time. Wish I could stay in '93 til Infinity
This song dropped when I was attending Grambling State University and watching Rap City on BET every Saturday was a big deal especially when there's not a lot going on in a small college town & it takes me back to those days. This track will always be fire to me. "93 Till Infinity" & T.R.O.Y.(They Reminisce Over You) have that same vibe musically. Thanks for posting this video. I see APlus appreciate it as well. Big shout out to APlus & Souls Of Mischief.
Wow Colleges like that were like a badge of honor and prestige. Especially HBCU shirts hats and hoodies were a youngsters favorite fashion. Times have changed now.
@@Speed_Racer.Swear. I remember watching Martin and other black shows and they stayed rockin HBCU gear. I love watching those old early 90s shows now and remembering how great of a time it was for black people.
I recently saw Souls Of Mischief (here in Wellington, NZ) on the 30 years of '93 til Infinity' tour. It was a great show overall. But no matter how many hundreds/thousands of times you've heard (or played) that tune at the dance - when they played it (second to last track of their set), it still made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Seminal tune.
Hey Man! Love your videos. We have a lot in common. One thing I think you'd dig, that song was recorded in my studio. The very same room I'm sitting in while I type this. In fact, even the beginning of the video was shot in my control room. This room also happens to be where Digital Underground made sex packets. Also, Herbie Hancock made Headhunters, Thrust, Manchild and Secrets all in here. I took over this space 5 years ago and this is where I've been producing my tracks and Live Streams. 🙂
Nobody does this thing like you, including you! You do it different every time so nothing ever feels old and stale. Best music minidocs on the whole damn internet!
93 til infinity is sonically nostalgic . That with the music video which highlights the comradeship of having a crew of friends together all collaborating. These ideas transcend the genre and lyrics and bring the listener / viewer into a warm experience of feeling nostalgia for a beautiful time that never existed, like a dream, yet is very real and meaningful on deep levels
'93 & Electric Relaxation are my two fave hip hop joints of all time. Takes me back to 23 in 93. Good times! Thanks again for the lesson DTG & Thanks for the MasterClass APlus!👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾💜💜💜🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Would love to see him cover the whole '93 'til Infinity' album as well as '21 & Over' (Tha Alkaholiks), 'Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde' (Pharcyde), and either 'Innercity Griots' or 'To Whom It May Concern...' (Freestyle Fellowship). The OTHER west coast movement that many still don't know a lot about.....
Just want to chime in here as a skater from the '80s and '90s, hieroglyphics crew was some of the first hip hop that was used in skate videos and had such a huge impact on us all. The shirt that Del the Funky Homosapien is wearing in the picture you kept popping up was a Plan B shirt. If you don't know, that's one of the most influential skate companies of that time and the skatepark of Tampa still uses 93 to Infiniti as their kind of theme song since they opened in '93. Just like everyone else here, I have very vivid specific memories that pop in my mind every time I hear that beat. Thanks for the video.
This beat manifests the emotion of leaving Highschool and feeling like the world is about to open up so incredibly well, and does it in such a warm and comforting way. Doing all that through such a clear lens that even though I wasn’t born till ‘97 and have never lived in the US I feel like I’m right there every time I hear it. If that’s not magic, I don’t know what is 👏
I recently heard this song at the cypress hill 420 concert Souls opened it was ethereal hearing this live, and one of my favorite artists who sampled this song is Mac Miller

It has this nostalgia of "the good ol' days", a simpler time, it's a time machine as you you said. By the way, new to the channel, only watched a few episodes after catching your MJ ep, but I absolutely love your content. The way you pace the episode is on point and you've got a great voice for this and any voicework work. I love hearing about samples as it opens my eyes to older songs that I've yet to discover. You made me want to go listen to The Ahmad Jamal Trio after your Pete Rock v Premo episode (2 of my favourite producers). You'd be great on a documentary. Your passion is clear. Now I just need to work my way through all your episodes!

Anyone who's not yet seen the Red Bull Spiral that SOM did last year, GO FIND IT NOW! The guys are sharper than ever, and really did something special for the track's 30th anniversary.
I can tell you exactly where I was when I first heard this… it was during lunch and our teacher would lend us her cassette player so we could listen to each other’s mixtapes. This song would make it on to each volume I would create each time thereafter.
This one always reminded me of another nostalgic kicker, Ahmad - Back in the Day, and from there I'm in the 90's hip hop rabbit hole part of my playlist, a great place to be.
Love that you did this song. I grew up during this time period in the Bay Area. The music scene was insane in all genres from Too Short to Tony Toni Tone to Green Day to Third Eye Blind to Hiero. I hope you are able to work in more Bay Hip-Hop like Blackalicious, Zion-I and Living Legends.
This track (and album) represent being 17 in South London in the summer of 1994. Good Times. I saw Souls of Mischief in Brisbane, Australia a few months ago. They were awesome. 30 years. So many memories.
One of my favorite rap tracks from my childhood, ages like fine wine. Love your channel. You look a little bit like the great James Gandolfini (R.I.P.) btw.
For me, this will always be my all-time favorite hip hop track. It came out during my first year at art college in San Francisco, which was such a great time. I actually loved this song/album so much, I recreated the cover for a Graphic Design project. Fast forward 30+ years later, I've been working as a designer professionally since and I still listen to this track and still love it just as much! Bay Area stand up! Much love to the Heiro crew!!!
thanks for breaking this down for us. You got to feel that bay area breeze and listen to this. its just that real with the santa ana breeze rolling up some of that refined sunshine
I remember when I first heard this as a kid … and I still bump it to this day (I’m 40). I do believe it is quite possibly my favourite song of all time. If not, then definitely a close first. 😅😊 thank you for this!
Their most recent in-studio performance of “‘93 Til Infinity” with the spin around camera effect is CRAZY. So dope to still see them all alive, healthy, and still killing it. This is such a timeless beat tho. For some reason, it reminds me of high school and I graduated in 2005.😂🔥🔥🔥
It’s true how this song never grows old and keeps making it into new playlists created over the years. I love playing it for people who have never heard it before too, and always gets the same positive reaction 🔥
First, GREAT upload! Second, shout out to A-Plus for chiming in on the video!! Third, this is madd respect all round & one of my personal songs of inspiration that catapulted me into beat making at that time! And lastly, this is in my all time favorite hip hop top ten productions!! Great great track that will definitely stand the test of time!! It has already proven itself!!👊🏾💯
Just one of the most nostalgic records ever (not just hip hop). It instantly transports me back in time, sets my mood, and gives crazy vibes. Chefs kiss record
I remember hearing this song on a skate board mix tape style video. It’s hypnotic. Like an unending groove. You could run this for hours with several rappers just jumping back and forth and it wouldn’t get old.
You have to commend the work you put behind all of these think pieces. I salute you 100%! And this very instrumental... the staple it has been for hip-hop as a whole... and for me, as a rapper. On my first project (back in 2015), I rap over this instrumental as a means to introduce myself to the world. Will always hold a special place in my heart as it refers to a specific time capsule in my life.
Such a sick video. I just wanted to share something we used to do back in the day. Some turntables actually did 78 rpm when you pressed 33 and 45 at the same time. That let you squeeze a little more sample in the machine
A classic from the golden era. As always, I was transported by your storytelling. On a very specific note, I am quite confident that the sax sample did not have a delay but a multi-level repeat note, as it was a very common practice on the SP 1200 back then.
Got 93’til tatted on my peck paying homage to the Souls, as well as 2pac in a way haha. Also being born in 93 myself and wanting to have a chill vibe from birth til death (infinity) made me go for it. You’re right, this track represents that specific moment in hip hop history, that was just filled with phenomenal albums and vibes. For me it captures the essence of the best of hip hop culture. Great breakdown! 👏🏼
Great write up and breakdown! In my opinion, what makes this song a classic, the over all good vibe of the lyrics and the beat is wasy to nod your head to.
It stands the test of time because it was soooo well crafted! Oh yeah you're right even to this day I can recall hearing this my sophomore year at ECSU and being hooked immediately. Good job bruh. 💪🏿
Today is the first time I heard this & been listening to hip hop for decades, I like it, prime example of great sampling and great rapping, nice, i agree, defo a classic,, cheers 😀
Classic hands down, and it’s so true how Bay Area had there own like “scene” back then, and they all made 🔥, honestly I’d give them more credit as far as like skateboard scene integrating in then NY, they were way ahead of curve with that
Love the video, was wondering whether you would ever do a video on Pete Rocks "Centre of Attention", I think it's got quite an interesting story to it and off course incredible Pete Rock beats.

thanks for breaking this down for us.
For some reason, it reminds me of high school and I graduated in 2005.😂🔥🔥🔥
I love the samples of tracks like this. Genius to be able to to make something so small into something huge. Give it a whole new life
I was a sophomore in high school when this song released in 93. Still one of my favorites. My kids love this now.
This album has been on heavy rotation for me lately. Thanks for the break-down.
It’s true how this song never grows old and keeps making it into new playlists created over the years. I love playing it for people who have never heard it before too, and always gets the same positive reaction 🔥
I've watched every video about this forever classic. I graduated in '93 so it'll always hold as a classic to me.
Brings Back Awesome Memories ❤
EXACTLY 💯 always brings me back to the 90s my childhood growing up
I remember hearing this song on a skate board mix tape style video. It’s hypnotic. Like an unending groove. You could run this for hours with several rappers just jumping back and forth and it wouldn’t get old.
I'm from N.Y.! I thought the dudes was from N.Y.! Thought they shot the vid in Central Park! Love these bros!!! West Cost BOOM Bap!
Word up son me and peeps in Harlem did too as well 😮
Indeed a classic. Too, I think Souls have been slept on as a crew; they really grew over the years as artists.
YES! another video 🙌🏾🙌🏾
6:35 dayum I've never seen a bass boost like that! 😄 Awesome video like always! A true classic!!!
Ahh great point!
You are 100% correct. That is always how we did those stabs on the SP's! repeat with decay.... Although I only had an SP12.
Well I stand corrected by A+ himself!!! No SP and no multi-level.
Excellent video for an incredible song. I listened to the track after watching the video and actually had tears in my eyes. Amazing.
Thank you for shedding a light on this dope hit
Certain songs can take your mind back into time. Absolute classic and is embedded in my soul.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for the support! 🙏
Great write up and breakdown!
In my opinion, what makes this song a classic, the over all good vibe of the lyrics and the beat is wasy to nod your head to.
BEST BEAT OF ALL TIME ALONG WITH SHOOK ONES
I saw them live last year, 30 years!
Love this jam
Takes me back to 93 when I was 22 and life was fun
That man Digs just can't miss 🔥🔥🔥
Had never heard of this song, or the Souls of Mischief until maybe two years ago and was surprised I'd never heard them before. Good stuff.
common digging the greats w
🫵
Damn! Brought back memories! Just added to the playlist! Good times.
I got chills watching this breakdown
That entire album is so strong. Amazing lyrics and deep samples.
Never No More is my favorite track.
I was there when it dropped. Mind blowing. A lot of gems people haven't found yet...
It stands the test of time because it was soooo well crafted! Oh yeah you're right even to this day I can recall hearing this my sophomore year at ECSU and being hooked immediately. Good job bruh. 💪🏿
Normally don't comment, but had to for this amazing song. Thanks for covering a favorite!
Appreciate the comment - glad to have you here 🔥
A breakdown worthy of the greatness of the track.
That sample played at 7:52 was also used on Kid Frost's La Raza.
Today is the first time I heard this & been listening to hip hop for decades, I like it, prime example of great sampling and great rapping, nice, i agree, defo a classic,, cheers 😀
Been on playlist for best part of 25 years, 90s hip hop is a generational era !!
Classic hands down, and it’s so true how Bay Area had there own like “scene” back then, and they all made 🔥, honestly I’d give them more credit as far as like skateboard scene integrating in then NY, they were way ahead of curve with that
Gives me goosebumps every time i hear it
I was a sophomore in HS NYC. Definitely takes me back when i hear it💪🏆
Love the video, was wondering whether you would ever do a video on Pete Rocks "Centre of Attention", I think it's got quite an interesting story to it and off course incredible Pete Rock beats.
