It took Amazon three years from announcing the development of the _Invincible_ animated show, eight episodes at roughly 45 minutes each. So, if Warner follows that model, you can extrapolate when exactly that _Creature Commandos_ thing was put into development. Invincible took 30 months for eight double episodes = 16 "normal" episodes. That's 7.5 weeks production time per episode. At six episodes - we will say they are regular length - that is a year of production, not counting development and time to greenlight and do all the contracts. Since it is the first one to hit in 2024, this thing had to have been written already at the very least in April/May last year. Which means it was a Suicide Squad spin-off all along.

mason failed to mention that inbetween stormwatch and the authority there's wildcats vs aliens, a rare example of a multi-publisher crossover that's actually canon (in wildstorm continuity at least). ellis wanted to create his own super-team to write stories for, so he contrived a way to thin out the old cast: have them encounter and be killed by xenomorphs. awesome!
I also think this sounds really good. Hopefully we get to see most of it and it mostly turns out well. And I also agree it's great that Gunn is highlighting the comics and that he's digging a level or two down beyond the stories that everyone knows and has seen multiple times. Honestly, I'm probably most excited for Creature Commandos because I love animated superhero shows, and it seems like the kind of thing that is right in Gunn's wheelhouse. After that, I'm most interested in the Superman & The Authority story and the Supergirl story. Haven't read The Authority comics yet, but I read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and it's really good.
I honestly think Zack Snyder would be a great fit for The Authority. Where it’s big action and spectacle and heroes as gods, and is a bit darker compared to regular DC.
I just don't agree they should have just announced the Superman movie and nothing else, if Superman is a home run then you can hit the ground running on the rest of the universe, I feel they're leaning too much into 'content'
Hey you guys should put whoever did the edit in your description. They deserve the credit and I could also tell them I enjoy this little comique booque fill-in idea they've done here
That’s a good idea, normally in like a Caravan of Garbage they happen to mention the editor but it would be good to always just give credit, in the description at the very least
If they commit to the true detective angle and make it a dark crime drama it could really be cool. Exploring other worldly Cthulhu like creatures and galaxy spanning conspiracies with murders and massacres I think it would be dope. It would explain why they’re so powerful and why it’s a big deal to have so much will etc
I will say, as a Tim drake fan and damian Wayne hater, his character has grown a lot these past nearly 20 years he’s existed(and regressed but that’s the nature of comics). He’s got a lot of depth underneath the annoying exterior and I would say he’s made a good mark as robin
Midnighter and Apollo has so much potential. I just remember one comic where they're having a dinner party and Midnighter struggles with his mind that was warped to always think of every potential way to kill a person when he sees them, and the guy at their party is just like....did you jus tlook at the fork and then to my neck? And he feels all bad about it, but Apollo doesn't give a shit because he's invulnerable so they're a perfect couple. I need them to be like Dennis and Mac from Always Sunny, but more dramatic, with powers, and actually a couple.
Oooh, can't wait to see "Creature Commandos". And I remember my grandmother telling me 'No matter what they try to teach you in school, you remember: "Amanda Waller was blechk!"
Personally? I have hope. This is the dude that made several C at best D most of the time characters into badass and well written/developed media. Maybe I'm biased tho bc Peacemaker is my favorite thing to come out of the DCEU
I’m personally looking forward to seeing how these projects turn out. I have several DC comics that I’ve been meaning to read and this has me interested in finally getting around to reading them.
If “Brave and the Bold” leads to Batwoman showing up and possibly getting a spin-off, I will definitely give it a chance. Also, I’m glad Swamp Thing, Hal Jordan, and Booster Gold are getting a spotlight, very much looking forward to Superman: Legacy, and hopefully, they do a good version of Midnighter.
I loved Cavill but I'm not too upset that he's not going to be Superman anymore, as long as they make good content for Superman and Batman, 2 of the most iconic heroes ever. I don't care who plays them, just give us good content please

I've always said that the grey and navy blue suit would work best, because *Fun Fact* navy blue does not reflect as much light as black. So, if Batman wanted to remain unseen, navy blue would work best
If Henry Cavill were to ever come back as Superman, I think Kingdom Come would be the perfect project to do that. It'd also be a great project to bring back a lot of old, familiar faces. But that's something that'd be best saved for a much later date.

When The Batman came out DC put out a box set of "The Classic Graphic Novels That Inspired The Feature Film" with The Long Halloween, Batman: Ego and Batman: Year One. Obviously, those are much more well known comics - but I'd love to see both DC and Marvel continue to do similar things with their upcoming movies. I haven't read any of The Authority, so close to it's release re-print the omnibus and use it to advertise the film. Or give me a Superman Box Set with the stories that best inspire the new movie, etc.

interesting that nearly every superhero franchise makes their own versions of superman but not so much supergirl. also lots of justice league homages but not too many make their own versions of the avengers.
I think a part of that is that for a very very long time the avengers werent that big of a name in comics. When you look at the members if the team as well the biggest name on the team was probably either the thor or hulk with hulk leaving the team early in the run. They just didnt have the public image that the league had when you look at the main members of the league they're all DC's BIG names batman superman and wonder woman they had the star power that the avengers didnt.
That Tokyo Mech suit... I'm trying to remember if that's the story I'm remembering. There's a guy whose main villain is some powerful wizard, and the reason they fight is, the wizard used time travel to go into the future after an apocalypse and liked the peace and quiet and turned this desolate wasteland into his lab, but then the good guy used time travel to prevent the apocalypse and it ruined all the wizard's stuff, so now he's fighting him to try and stop him from saving the world so he can have his quiet, peaceful desolate landscape back. Is that the same guy?

Weren’t the Authority an extremely 90’s take on the archetypes of the Justice League? How’s that going to work when both properties are part of the same cinematic universe?
They're also what the Elite were based off. This will lead to a Superman vs Authority instead of Elite film where the vigilantes are taking the law into their own hand.
As much as I enjoyed some of the DCEU's movies, yeah, it was an absolute mess. Killing Superman in the second movie he was in was never gonna go well. Having Batman be a murdering Bat-brander also didn't sit well. Superheroes shouldn't be THIS dark. Of course the counterargument is "But The Batman was super dark, and you liked that!" Ok, it was really good and dark. But it also had it's moments of "comedy". Batman saying "'thumb' drive" wasn't inherently funny, but seeing it in this context was. It also had an important message of how Bruce shouldn't be a symbol of vengeance anymore, but rather be a figure of hope for Gotham City. Snyder's Superman however, was dark just for the sake of being dark. Having Jon Kent say Clark should've let a bus full of kids was absolutely not the right move, and killing Zod is something I don't even have to discuss. The Snyderverse was too dark for the characters, and the rest of the DCEU suffered from it. One can only hope Gunn's DCU gets the characters right, and does them "Justice".
I really think that DC is so strongly connected with the Golden Age and Silver Age of comics that they need to just use the $150 million budgets to make period pieces set in mid-century America. There's so much of American Exceptionalism that is connected to Mid-Century America and Golden/Silver Age comics. Also, it would feel nice after the Synder-verse to have Superman actually symbolize hope.
I think his plan is sound, but the unavoidable problem is that this new DCU is entering a climate that's getting pretty superhero movie'd out after over a decade of the things. This DCU alone will have two Batman continuities (Patterson version in its own universe, and a new "standard" one) existing at the same time. I'm just saying, the biggest problem might not be how this new DCU is done, but the trying to win over a really fatigued audience outside of diehard DC fans. Not saying it's impossible, again I do like what I'm hearing about how he wants to do this DCU reboot but it's a huge elephant in the room I think. Having a "main" universe and "elseworld" installments is a fine solution but will most people care for the difference? It's ironic because that same fatigue I think people are having with the MCU also in theory gives this DCU reboot a huge opening as well, but question is whether or not that same fatigue will affect it too all the same. Of course, it'll come down to how individually good the movies are....like how The Batman pulled it off by just being its own superb movie, so I think an essential thing Gun is going to have to maneuver around is allowing the studio to get too eager and too hungry to shove movie interconnectivity into everyone's faces. The movies have to stand on their own more so than current MCU projects do imo.
If Ben Affleck does direct something, I think it should be a movie about The Question. Cos a weird, Grant Morrison-inspired Batman film with a lot of surreal elements isn't his style as a director. A Question film about high-level corruption, investigative press and inner city issues is much more his thing.
Gunn revealed so much content that I completely missed the Authority announcement. And honestly if anyone else was in charge of an Authority project I'd be instantly worried but James Gunn is one of the few people I can think of off the top of my head that could do this just. i.e super weird, vulgar, and of course a healthy amount of ultra violent. Also it's amazing how much time and money WB wasted before realizing "Hey maybe we should put someone in charge that's a capable filmmaker and has a really good understanding of this comic book stuff!?!"🤔 Lastly congratulations my Aussie friends bc the Flash trailer reveals were not only getting Affleck & Keaton Batman but also the cinematic debut of the Blue & Grey Batsuit!!!🎉🎊

6:20 DC had a gratuities policy under Paul Levitz. It wasn't legally required or anything. They just gave creators a cheque for everytime their creations were used in film. Neal Adams and Dennis O'Neil got 100 grand apiece for being the creators of Ras al Ghul when Batman Begins came out.
Maybe. Just maybe it would be better focusing on 1 movie, making sure it's successful before making a universe around it? Because focusing on the sequels worked so well previously. Remember that Cyborg movie or when Batflek was meant to be in The Batman?
Don't know why your comparing 2 completely different visions. The first DC universe didn't fail because it was building a universe right of the bat. It failed because of bad writing, studio interference or an incomplete vision. Just because marvel didn't announce itd universe when making ironman doesn't mean it wasn't already setting a universe. Marvel literally did this.
@@cngotham4111 Do you not recall the amount of shit they cramped into BVS? @@cngotham4111I think he’s questioning the idea that any “vision” for multiple films is troublesome. Why not focus on making a good movie and telling a good story, then expanding? Their current direction is like putting the cart before the horse
Assuming they're building off the recent Suicide Squad/Peacemaker stuff, it's not as if it will be a complete unknown quantity like Iron Man was before it came out. So they basically already have their good movie, and just need to continue making comparable projects.
I think it is unnecesary complex Especially videogames which would be canon to the DC universe Videogames now have longer production schedules than movies, this wont allow any delays, meaning awful launch and performance like Fallout 74 and Cyberpunk
agreed. marvel phase 4 kinda showed that just having series as strict canon can get too much. The whole video game idea just isnt going to work. Imagine having to buy a £600 games console every few years just to keep up with the movies?! insane. I think the whole "keeping half and recasting half" is too complex too. Just scrap the DCEU. start over. clean slate
My big problem with it is that it feels like it's rushing into big stories just like the previous attempt and just like the previous attempt it's relying on one director again. Not to mention that there's still multiple continuities and not a full reboot, so audiences will still be confused about what is and isn't part of the cinematic universe, they really should have fully reboot. Also keeping ezra Miller doesn't make any sense. Some of it looks interesting, some of it I'm not confident will work and some of them I really want to be good, like the green lantern show, but this does seem to be doing the same problem as before.
Warner Brothers has the Wizarding World franchise. Harry Potter & the prequels. All together made £10 Billion & is the 4th highest grossing franchise ever.
Strange timeline for Batman and the Justice League, if Batman is already older it should probably exist but then why arent all the conflicts saved by them? Weird having Booster Gold after Blue Beetle, which needs Ted Kord to die, but Booster Gold needs the friendship with the 2nd blue Beetle. Id prefer having the Green Lantern space police be a space police rather then two guys doing detective stuff on earth. With Damian, Superman needs to be older too and have his own son for the Super Sons friendship. Wish it wasn't the same Aquaman, not really comic accurate or interesting. I want the DCU to be successful, but I feel people will get revisionists history about the MCU. While the MCU isn’t perfect, it’s the first successful cinematic universe and the DCU got to learn from their mistakes. First through the door, bloodied and bruised. Second through the door, it’s all been done before.
Yeah but Hollywood currently lacks originality. MCU was successful and they want to manufacture that success again. So DC is probably going to copy or go the same route (but they're a few years too late). It would be nice if they come up with something different to counter the superhero fatigue.

mason failed to mention that inbetween stormwatch and the authority there's wildcats vs aliens, a rare example of a multi-publisher crossover that's actually canon (in wildstorm continuity at least). ellis wanted to create his own super-team to write stories for, so he contrived a way to thin out the old cast: have them encounter and be killed by xenomorphs.
I don't think it'll be dark. I think it'll be sort of like The Suicide Squad but maybe toned down comedy
@@volkoveditsmaybe more like the boys, since a lot of people call the authority the the boys of dc
Super excited for this lineup, it has such variety, literally something for everyone
I think they've said when no-one is credited it's James who edits but may be mistaken
6:48 hey guys. Just wanted to say you’re super underrated and I love the videos. Much love from Louisiana, USA
Very much appreciated mate thanks for the kind words!
I will say, as a Tim drake fan and damian Wayne hater, his character has grown a lot these past nearly 20 years he’s existed(and regressed but that’s the nature of comics). He’s got a lot of depth underneath the annoying exterior and I would say he’s made a good mark as robin
I hope that Mr Gun’s movies are more enjoyable than the DCEU movies we ended up getting. DC has many interesting characters.
His name is Gunn and he was part of the DCEU.

I have faith that James and Peter will bring hope to the DC brand once again with this new movie universe, and 8-10 year plan they have
I’m personally looking forward to seeing how these projects turn out.

I think Damian HAS to be a kid, because if he's 15 its like "C'mon man stop it" but as a kid its genuinely more "Let me teach you to be better"
At that point you should make him Jason Todd but I guess the general public knows he eventually dies like Bruce parents.
If Batgirl was made for the small screen, why not release it to streaming services?
I think out of all of these besides the main two (super man and batman) I’m most excited to see what happens with booster gold
I hope someday we get to see more characters on the Wonder Woman lore like Donna Troy, Cassandra Sandsmark, Artemis, Yara Flor and Hippolyta along with Evil characters like Giganta, Veronica Cale, Doctor Cyber, Devastation, Genocide and Grail.😎

interesting that nearly every superhero franchise makes their own versions of superman but not so much supergirl. also lots of justice league homages but not too many make their own versions of the avengers.

Hit Girl is exactly how they should do Damien. A small kid who kills with ninja skills.
Oh man, a comic book accurate Supergirl would be awesome. A real warrior of Krypton type.
Do you guys think they do a podcast?
I have to say that your Interstellar ending explained video is really good which was uploaded 8 years ago
I have called Robert Pattinson Robat-Bat-In-Bat nonstop since you dropped that back when. Love it
Swamp Thing, you make my heart sing...
If Ben Affleck does direct something, I think it should be a movie about The Question.
Cos a weird, Grant Morrison-inspired Batman film with a lot of surreal elements isn't his style as a director. A Question film about high-level corruption, investigative press and inner city issues is much more his thing.
Didn't the Swamp Thing show also get cancelled because of a tax thing?
@@OldManYellsAtClouds it was cancelled one week after it was released, on a niche streaming service no one was using anyway.

Stan Lee literally got a million dollars a year for simply being alive.
Man these guys will say anything!

Assuming they're building off the recent Suicide Squad/Peacemaker stuff, it's not as if it will be a complete unknown quantity like Iron Man was before it came out. So they basically already have their good movie, and just need to continue making comparable projects.
I think it is unnecesary complex
Especially videogames which would be canon to the DC universe
Videogames now have longer production schedules than movies, this wont allow any delays, meaning awful launch and performance like Fallout 74 and Cyberpunk

“There’s gonna be an 8-10 year plan” Until the first flop and then it’s off in another direction.
8-10 year olds are a perfect fit for James Gunn’s tastes 🤫
Best case this plan breaks even, worst case they go bankrupt MGM style.
Superman and Batman are too famous. Their movies wont flop. BvS not flopping is proof of that
My big problem with it is that it feels like it's rushing into big stories just like the previous attempt and just like the previous attempt it's relying on one director again.
The difference is James Gunn actually understands the characters.
I actually turned off the audio and just watched the screen for this one, think this kinda humor is best heard visually.
@@mahogara i think DC knows that and thats why they start with...well unique stuff MCU currently dont do; monster group (Creature Commandos, political thriller (Waller), radical heroes (The Authority), procedural space cop (Lanterns), Father and son dynamic (Brave and the Bold), and to cap it a straight horror movie (Swamp Thing).
