Why is Shazam II bombing?

- Shazan: Fury Of The Gods is the third movie in The Rock's Black Adam DC Universe which began with Shazam 2019. Unfortunately however it's not reaching the box office heights of the previous two entries despite reaching number one in its opening weekend. Here we take a look at what went wrong, what went right and what may have lead to this outcome whether it be the Snyderverse, Dwayne Johnson, James Gunn's DCU or something else entirely. This exert is from our podcast The Weekly Planet which actually has its own UA-cam channel if you are interested. Thanks for listening!

#DCU #DCEU #Shazam #BlackAdam
The combination of "Who cares? They're rebooting the universe anyway!" and the fact that in typical fashion the trailers spoiled everything is what lead to this.
Yeah, and what’s sad about that is that there are people thinking that Gal Gadot and Zachary Levi have been confirmed that this was their last movie. James Gunn has openly stated that he’s leaving the door open for them. Whether it’s the comic books or The CW version we’re flash goes back in time or the animated universe. Yeah when he does that somethings are rebooted but somethings stay the same. If you watch this movie and I don’t wanna give away any spoilers there’s some stuff that points to it being a part of James Gunn’s new DCU.
They were the worst trailers I've seen in ages. The marketing team is hopefully fired.
@@bdr113080 I saw the movie too and am hoping there is sufficient support to retain these characters in Gunn's DCEU.
The only definitive miscast I can think of in DCEU (off the top of my head) is Lex Luthor. Ezra Miller and Amber Heard have successfully added themselves to that list; not to equate their misconduct but both are unfit to be portraying the leads/co-leads in movies.
I really don't think the general audience are that aware of reboots etc. as much as we are
I don't understand disliking a movie because its universe isn't being continued. Surely the important question is whether it's a good movie in its own right?
As a more casual viewer of the super hero genre, I was aware this movie was a thing but didn’t realize it was out already. I feel like the market is just so saturated with these movies it’s hard to really notice when another is coming out
Both this and ant man kinda flitted on by without notice.
It’s been marketed poorly.
The market is not over saturated, people need to stop using this term so casually. There are thousands of movies made every year, a few dozen are super hero/comic book movies. Why is it no one ever says this about the 10k romcoms that come out every year that no one watches?
@@darksaint0124 No one expects random low/no budget romcoms to do a billion dollars would be one reason for that. You're also not expected to watch everything to keep abreast of what's going on in the same way that you are with the MCU or what DC hoped would happen with the DCEU.
@@goingferal7393 That is an expectation you made on yourself. No one is making you watch anything. You are in charge of you, stop blaming others.
What really killed my interest in this movie was that they teased things in the first movie like Mr. Mind and the Crocodile Men but for the sequel they just rolled out three new generic villains and a dragon. The world of Shazam is a crazy, wonderful place full of talking tigers, immortal caveman warlords, giant atomic robots, etc and they didn't use any of it.
Also you forgot to mention trapping everyone inside a giant dome. The dome things been done to death "The Simpsons movie", the show "The Dome", even Wandavision had people trapped inside a dome like structure. Extremely generic
@@thestuff48315 But what if they solve it with a sky portal!? D:
Pretty much this. When I saw the trailer my first thought was „where is Mr. Mind?“ followed by „who are these Power Ranger rejects“ and then „why can’t they do a real adaptation“. And here comes the real thing: I‘m NOT a fan of the comics, not well versed in Shazam lore and only occasionally read a comic where he is in. But not even trying to do anything that feels Shazam still annoyed me like hell … and obviously the lack of Mr. Mind. I read up on him after the last movie and would have watched a movie with a Mr. Mind (damn, I watched The Suicide Squad because it had actual Starro in the trailer).
@@thestuff48315 to be fair the comics had them trapped in a dome too, back in the 70s or whenever DC reintroduced them. I thought it was a call back to that.
Generic? 3 goddesses is generic for u?
I liked the first Shazam a lot but it seemed like the kind of movie that benefited from being relatively small.
It looks like they went the opposite and lost all the magic of the smaller story from the first one.
I agree, not only that but it's a small budgeted movie doesn't need to make a lot of money to even break even. Hard to call it a bomb
I agree, they should keep Shazam solo movies as small fun adventures, and save the big stuff for when he is with the Justice Society or whatever.
@@Dave-cj6dk what do you think the movie needs to make to break even. Show me your educated unbiased opinion 😊😏🤣

Really weird to have a Black Adam and Shazam movie back to back that have nothing to do with each other.

People should read "Diamond Dragons".

It’s like having a Venom movie right before a Spider-Man movie and they never interact… wait. Ok it’s like having a Joker movie and Batman reboot and they never meet… wait.
The Rock wanted to be Black Adam but he didn't want to be associated with Shazam. He just wanted to beat Superman and stroke his ego and make himself the top dog of the DCEU. It's a very self-serving project.
That's a stupid reason to tank 2 movies... You know what will make any crossover FAIL AND NEVER HAPPEN... If you tank movies over non sense... Hey no more movies then
@@One.Zero.One101 The problem was the writing and storyline. If Black Adam would have been made to streamed during Covid it would have been a big success. DECU has too much negative energy and bad press going on 4 years straight
I went to this movie opening day, there were literally three other people in the theater. One of those three actually left about 45 minutes into the movie.
Yeah I was surprised because my theater was pretty packed. The most packed theater I’ve been in probably since….. maybe endgame? There was probably at least 40 people. When I see a movie usually there’s like 10 at the most. And now I hear everyone else had empty theaters. Weird.
I went to a 3pm showing on the opening Thursday and it was packed.

I went on Saturday night at 10:30 in Dolby and I was one of 5 people in there. Brutal.
He was rushing out to tell his friends to go watch Shazam 2?
Billy being an adult really hurt the main appeal of the story. Imagine if the kid in Big was already 17 years old
It's just a man turning into another man.
17 is a kid.
Imagine trying to make an entire multi movie franchise out of Big.
@@adamplentl5588 please don't give them the idea 😂
@R K wow you completely missed the point of my comment
This movie sits in the weird space of “I saw commercials for it but at the same time didnt know it was coming out”
It's also weird cause I NEVER saw any advertisements for it, so I never knew it had even came out...
I thought there was a weird disconnect between Billy's personalities in the first film as well. As a kid he was a moody delinquent, but became a cheerful, naive superhero. His crippled best friend had a much more similar personality to Shazam; enthusiastic, geeky...
Yeah it makes no sense, its not the writing as much as the direction. So its decision making ha
I get it in the first one, he's a moody teen that suddenly gets the powers and body of a grown superhuman man, so he has to try to be as cool and mature as possible, but ends up overcorrecting and just comes off as a goofy teen - which he is. In this one there's no excuse though, because he's already been Shazam for years and he's also more mature as Billy, so I don't know why his brain would just revert to being a dumb kid.
Yes so true
Billy in the new 52 was main inspiration for this version. I can buy it since as Billy he’s more cautious of the world due to growing up in the system which is why he’s more moody and acts more serious because he thinks he can take care of himself. As Shazam, the kid in him comes out because he’s more careless and doesn’t have to worry about his personal life.
I think that's because of Zachary Levi. He plays adult Billy as if he's 12 years old for some reason.
Because Dwayne wanted his way, he ended up bombing two movies at once. Very impressive.
He changed the hierarchy of power.
How is this Dwayne's fault?? James Gunn killed the universe and therefore people's interest for the future
@@Fishersons he made the decision way before Gunn was in the picture to exclude black Adam from the Shazam franchise which is what I always wanted to see because yk that’s his villain
@@winnablepeach135 That's true, but Henry Cavill's return was axed by Gunn and that didn't go well with anyone
INSANE ego on that one
So far no one has made any jokes about Shazam 2 having the early name "Blue Harvest" in this comments section. This is a reference to how Shazam is not blue, and also how the movie will not be harvesting any money.
Which was the working title of Star Wars. A movie that made more money then this one.

*golf clap*
He is of course green, but the trivia section being called Green Trivia has nothing to do with that. Also the guy in Swamp Thing who yells "Rodney".
All the interesting things about Shazam come from the dynamic that he is a kid. He is a child. He has some amazing scenes throughout the comics where he fails tests because he had to evacuate an island full of people before a volcano went off. Or where he keeps choking up in superhero form, because his friend died, and he can't tell anyone, because he friend was also 12. The weight that he carries, and the goodness that shines through despite that weight is an absolutely amazing tool for interesting and dramatic story telling. But it gets lost if your actor is in their late teens. The problem isn't the guy playing adult shazam, it is the handling of their kid persona's. That is not something to skip or fast forward though. That is the WHOLE story!
"There's a weird magic room with a pen that can write." Ahh yes, truly the most magical thing, literacy.
The villain in this needed to be Black Adam. Could have done a similar story about him being released from breaking the staff and wanting to get his full powers back from the shazam family. Then we would have had a real fight at the end too.
"But..... Dwayne Johnson is the main character." - Dwayne Johnson.
@@thedarkemissary Maybe he's realizing that he's yet to star in a movie that won't be forgotten in a week, and is desperate to have at least one memorable role before his star fades? >__>
I think Mr. Mind should be a running gag or be more like an extreme deep cut waaaayy down the line in some random new DC movie years from now as the main villain. He finally enacts that plan he’s been planning all these years and isn’t even announced as the villain. The entire movie everyone either thinks the main villain is someone else or is wondering who’s behind everything only to find it was Mr. Mind the whole time. Bonus points if its a movie thats on the same scale as endgame or justice league.

Yeah, you just need to look at the MCU,in spite of the drop in quality they all performed great at the box office
I have superhero fatigue. I've had it for years. One of the reasons I went to see the first Shazam was that I didn't have to know anything about any other superhero movie, and figured it would wrap up its plot and not require me to see three more movies about it. Likewise with the first Guardians of the Galaxy.
See I think that The Suicide Squad was a really good superhero movie and I'm very sad that it bombed; I think there's just too dammed many of them that are all mediocre. I hope there is a good one soon but I'm not holding out hope
@@mahna_mahna that's universe/quality fatigue, not superhero. When I think superhero fatigue I think that you haven't seen, or want to see, a single Supe film since your breaking point. But you do. You even clicked on a 30 min Shazam video.

The only reason I knew it was out is because I saw a UA-cam video reviewing it come up a few hours ago. I don’t even know when it premiered in theaters.
The fact that DC really thought that releasing 2 canon characters in complete separate films and not one bit of connection will work just fine.
I think the biggest aspect is the why bother. If the story isn't gonna continue and it's built up as part of this bigger universe why go see it?
100% correct. Also.... The rock helped bomb this too
Yeah, they can't announce that the DCU is getting rebooted with no solid plans and then expect the existing universe to do well.
Though, apprently they will be keeping sone aspects of the current movies and mix them into the new movies. It's all kinds of fucked. Maybe they should have gotten the Flashpoint movie out of the way and held off on Shazam until after the rebooted universe started.
@@gordonfilberg3840 crazy he can bomb two movies at once lol. It’s like a magic trick!
@@WiGgYof09 I agree. If Flashpoint came out and made it clear what was staying and going I think the remaining stuff would do better.
But doesn’t this also illustrate a larger problem caused by the MCU? Films should be able to exist in their own right, as their own story. The Batman worked well with this. There were no concrete plans for more until after it became a success. Reeves planned it as a single standalone film. I feel more need to be made in this way.
I honnestly didn't even know there was a Shazam 2 movie, i feel like i've seen zero advertisement.

Yep
Agreed. I think the last 2-3 years have shown that comic book films are not going to be a huge part of pop culture and cinema unless Marvel/Disney and others get their acts together. With the exception of Joker and The Batman, which didn't follow any of the tired tropes we've been seeing for over a decade, and the end of an era that was No Way Home, the last three years of comic book films have been uninteresting and poorly put together. I reckon more box office flops are on the way.
They fired Henry Cavill while WB simultaneously said they're rebooting everything. It's a tandem of bad decisions that led to this. I actually really enjoyed the first Shazam and would have seen this but due to the treatment of Cavill in not giving WB anymore money. I'll wait for this to hit hbo max

The ending of the first Shazam literally broke the character, when he could just transfer power to other people. He has the power of an entire universe at his fingertips, and is invincible. So making like 8 of him just makes 8 times more boring
Didn’t really like the other Shazam’s either frankly. Was easily my least favorite part of that movie and was glad it was hardly in the movie.
With you there. As soon as that happened in the first movie, I tuned right out.
They could have at least made the other kids stay young and have weaker powers. Making them all adults was dumb.
It's funny how I was more invested in Asher Angel as Billy Batson than I was with Zachary Levi as Shazam in this sequel. It would have been a better idea to see how Billy navigates his normal civilian life and his superhero life than what we got.
I just love how in every superheromovie the fate of the world is always at stake. It’s like any ounce of creativity shot up into the atmosphere and ending the world became the go to premise for every superhero movie.
As much as I criticize marvel’s handling of Spider-Man by making him too reliant on iron man, I do appreciate how low stakes homecoming was.
I pay pretty close attention to film releases and see most stuff opening week. Until I arrived at the theater to see a different movie I had no idea this was releasing.
It bombed because they spoiled everything in the trailer.
That doesn't check out. Avatar spoiled everything in it's trailer and it's the highest grossing movie of all time.

It's more then that Shazam is kind of a B list hero in DC compared to Superman, Batman, Wonderman. Super hero movies are also oversaturated now as well
Honestly movies being dropped on streaming services within two months has totally removed the majority of my desire to pay for movie theaters
In the comics, Hawkman, Doctor Fate and Black Adam did know each other, so the meta joke is even more meta.
I think having Black Adam in this would've been good. Have him as one of the people trying to steal Shazam's powers, have Shazam try to connect with him since he's worried about what will happen once he's grown up, have Adam talk about the loss of his own family and encourage Shazam to stay with his, and then have Adam help Shazam by killing the main bad guy. End with a mutual respect established between the two, and Black Adam going back to his home country.
But oh well. This movie isn't going to do well. Abysmal marketing, too late a sequel, and the middling reception of the first meant it was already fighting an uphill battle. Throw in the DCEU reboot (which I don't think the mainstream moviegoing audience really cares that much about, but the hardcore superhero movie fans do) and it needed to knock it out of the park to be successful. Oh well, not a big loss for me.
I didn't know this movie had come out yet so there's definitely something to be said for marketing. Straight up didn't even know it was coming out. I have vague memories of being told it was in production and that's it

The thor ragnarok effect lol.
Bad super hero fatigue. If they put out good ones there would be no fatigue.
@Sultan Of Swing i think there can still be fatigue even if there's good ones. Its kinda saturating the market. Plus superhero movies have kinda a set formula rhat can get old. But hopfully that changes

I’m old enough to remember when you weren’t expected to get a sequel to a movie for 3 years after the predecessor
I think there’s just a huge superhero movie fatigue, similar to the 90’s action movie fatigue from the 80’s. They need to reinvent themselves, almost like how they did with Joker and The Batman.
@GiRayne I haven’t seen joker either but they’re both a different pace and more story driven compared to your average superhero movie. They need to try an actual supervillain movie. Not those shitty copout suicide squad movies. They made movies about shit nobody cares about.
WB needs to give Deathstroke or Red hood a movie. I'd kill for a braniac quest to gain all the knowledge in the universe. Or an asshole Lex Luther.
The second Shazam was really f'king funny as hell
I got the feeling that they were setting up the Justice Society as being an Argus/Waller-run alternative to the Justice League, similar to how she set up the Justice League of America in the New 52.
They may have been setting up a Trinity War/Forever Evil adaptation down the line, but I guess we'll never know.
Nothing can convince me that this movie didn't come out 2 years ago and that I haven't seen it already.

1000% agree that Black Adam should have been introduced in Shazam 2...What a wasted opportunity
Is it just me, or does Zach Levi look, like, 20 years older in this movie?
The casting of Helen Mirren told me they weren't taking this film seriously from the get go.
I'd say it's for two big reasons.
1. The DC Universe is going to be rebooted soon, so there's the general thinking if this isn't going to go anywhere then why bother?
2. This was kind of a big month for movies and especially movie sequels. In the same month you've got Creed 3, Scream 6, and John Wick 4. People only have enough time for some of those and Shazam might have drawn the short stick.
Being somebody who doesn't really pay much attention, my main reason for not going to see it yet is that I didn't think the trailers looked very good
Because they kept reshuffling the release date. People didn't know it was coming out. So there you go.
This literally bombed for one reason and one reason only:
You announced a reboot. You told us this universe doesn’t matter.
i saw shazam 1 in theaters, and an old lady sat down next to me (in the empty theater) and threw a big blanket over herself and me. it smelled like moth balls and mold, and it landed on top of my soda too. i looked at her and pushed the creepy blanket off me and she just ignored my existence. i don't really remember anything from the movie though except that the main character looked like he was made of plastic like stretch armstrong

I think Shazam: Fury of the Gods has the same issue the X-Men movies had after Disney bought Fox, there going to be rebooted, so people are like “we’ll this doesn’t matter, I’ll just wait for the reboot”
Might be the fact that this video is the absolute first thing I've heard about it.
What's interesting is this movie was originally supposed to come out AFTER The Flash, and be part of the new continuity. Ezra Miller's B.S. effed that up.
James hits the nail on the head of why I don’t really like these movies. They’re well made but I can’t reconcile the mature boy / immature man in my head. For me it was a few reasons:
- The high of the first one had died off since this one came out
- It doesn’t matter, they’re just shitting out the remnants of their movie catalogue until they can reboot
- Trailer did nothing to grab me
-I liked the small intimate nature of the first film, which this film seemed to lack from the trailer
I really enjoyed it. I hope it does well on digital
Superhero fatigue is my best guess. The market is just so saturated with content right now, it's almost overwhelming
Could one reason be that most people are like me and didn’t even know that movie had come out??
The Billy Joel piano man joke killed me

Comicpop theory, Shazam loses his inhibitions after he transforms because he doesn't feel he has to keep a tight lid on things
Dumb idea. It’s simply that Zackary Levi SUCCCCCCCKKKKKSSSSS!!!
I had no idea it was even out and I'm seeing a lot of comments saying the same so it sounds like maybe a big cause of this is poor marketing.
Another is that they've announced a full reboot of DC so why bother watching it?
The last is the amount of people pissed about Ezra Miller not being fired so boycotting DC films in general.
The first one was way better than I expected but I just couldn't get excited for the second. The ads seemed to tell me everything I needed to know. Figured I'd wait to watch it on streaming.
They didn't market this because its not a part of the future moving forward.
Its a shame because this movie actually had some charm and was far better than most of the other superhero crap that came out recently
Showing mr mind at the end of the first movie and not putting him in the sequel is disingenuous. No audience will respond well to that.
A DC film that's underperforming at the box office? "
I'm shocked! Shocked to find that gambling is going on in here."
Zachary Levi always kind of creeper me out in shazam 1. Idk if its an uncanny valley thing, of seeing a grown ass man try to behave like a pre pubescent child, or what. But it sounds like this one is even more of that.
I'm good.
I read in an interview that they said the dome is supposed to be an excuse on why other heroes from the cinematic universe didn't show up. I'm of the opinion that the dome would've given the other heroes the reason to show up, because a localized scuffle won't attract attention the same way as a dome over an entire city would.
Yeah this is better than ant man, I really enjoyed the movie even with its faults. I really agree that they needed to focus more on some of the family stuff and so much more could’ve been done w Billy turning 18, I hope if they bring the character back that they’ll do a light recast. Mary was fantastic and the most competent character w powers lol
Agreed and Mary is banging. But I enjoyed Quantumania too. It’s definitely not as good as the other Ant-Man, but Jonathan Major saved the movie from Ant-Man’s daughter acting.
@@mrdude88 Naw his daughter was fine, she did what she was given for the script. For me other than just the overall writing and plot the CGI or the green screen they used was awful. Nothing felt tangible, just actors standing in front of a screen and it looked soooo obvious.
The smoke in the bottom middle of the screen is mirrored. You'll never unsee it now.
I think whenever you move a movie’s date multiple times you 1. Risk people getting confused as to when the movie actually comes out and 2. Risk people getting tired of your movie before it even comes out with ads running for the movies for overly extended periods of times
I didn't even know it was out. I haven't seen a single advertisement.
I forgot Birds of Prey even happened 😅
Having the Rock doing his thing and announcing a reboot doesn't help.
I personally liked Shazam 2. I was a fan of the first one, and the second was more of what I liked. It’s a shame that it isn’t doing well, though with the DC reboot coming soon, I know we won’t get a third one anyway.
I didn’t even know this was out. Latest shazam news I was aware of was a delay. I’ve seen 0 ads regarding this movie
Maybe it's just me but I never really considered Shazam any better than a midlevel hero.
I wonder if the general public is tired of comic-book movies after 2022. Such a mass of movies and tv shows that were in general not good or at the very least what we are accustom to.
By waiting, they were a product of Disney oversaturating the market last year (like I didn't even go to see antman in theaters because I am just so bored).
I think the effect of the pandemic is that unless it is the best movie of its kind, I'm going to wait until it's released on streaming and watch at home.
Like John Wick 4 is already having a media tour and allowed reviewers to release their reviews early proclaiming it's amazing. And the mass audience hasn't even seen it yet.
Shazam just waited way too long to come out. if studios want me to go to theaters they do need to make fantastic movies and turn off the machine. Otherwise, I just don't care to see it
@@cheetah219 I still feel like this would have played better in Early December.
@@griswoldclark6835 That would definitely make perfect sense IF they used Black Adam. It would have been a boon to have black adam come out in October and just a few months later, have a sequel come out showing Shazam vs. Black Adam vs. Villain.
They didn't want to compete with Avatar so fair enough, but if they couldn't release it in December 2022, then they should have pushed for a mid-2022 release. Frankly way too much time has passed from the first Shazam to the sequel...and I get it, pandemic and all that, but filming finished by Summer 2021. They wait WAY too long to release it, they had 1.5 years to work on it in post, vfx, etc. It's clear to me that resources were taken from Shazam FotG and put towards Black Adam to fast track that project and then they went back to finish Shazam...but all in, they just wasted too much time. First movie was released in 2019 and they didn't confirm the cast until mid 2020. They clearly didn't have a clear plan and then they didn't make a good movie and DC continues to confuse audiences on what theyre plan was.
With Gunn, hopefully it's clearer and they can finally do justice to Superman, Green Lantern, Martian manhunter, etc. Obviously Batman and Wonder Woman have gotten pretty good treatments. Who knows about Flash, but Im not going to go see it...that groomer Ezra isn't getting any profit sharing from me. He's already made his money
