URAL - New Owner Review of 2012 "Gear Up"

  • A simple review and introduction to a Ural Sidecar Motorcycle. These are my thoughts after owning a 2012 Ural Gear Up for a month. The Ural is a Russian motorcycle with roots from BMW that started production in 1939. The details may have changed over the years but the Ural has retained the look and feel of the early years of production. It is slow and antiquated but offers utility and a different kind of fun.

    Thanks for taking time to do this. I'm very interested in the Ural; however, I have two Harleys. My wife won't let me add the Ural without getting rid of one or both of the Harleys. I don't know if I'm ready to do that. Gerry in Calgary.

    I agree with the folks below. A VERY NICE REVIEW! Did you consider having the locks changed out by a smith so you could lock things up? Should be an easy and relatively inexpensive fix. Thanks again for the review.........Mike

    Thanks for the review, seemingly the most matter of fact, and honest one I've seen. How comfortable is the seat on the bike? I go close to 300lbs and it looks smallish for my ample rear end, but that can be worked around. Not looking to go even 60 on this, just puttering around locally. Thanks again, Dan

    • @landydrvr71
      @landydrvr71  8 років тому

      +wick5449 The "tractor seat" is OK for around town. It is a lot like a bicycle seat. It is not made for comfort really but is low maintenance and simple. I have ridden about 150 miles on it with one break. They do make better seats much like other motorcycles that you might like better if you check out their other models.

    Just get one ...... I have two / an M70 & gear up / love both of them but the m70 is just better to ride ..... If you're not doing serious off road or winter riding the M70 with the road gears is the way to go IMO..... I've had them all & there's nothing like my Urals ........ But they are slower & not meant to be fast / the m70 with road gears is much more road friendly.......

    I'm sure you've discovered by now that none of the Urals have a differential thus two wheel drive should only be used on dirt, gravel snow etc where the tires can be dragged when turning.

  • @peterforden5917
    @peterforden5917 8 років тому

    re tyres on a sidecar bike should be square section on all three wheels and your tyre dealer should be able to get them if you stress this!

    Will engaging 2WD make this rig faster on freeway?

    • @landydrvr71
      @landydrvr71  5 років тому +1

      No and it would be a bad idea. You should only engage 2wd off road because the diff will not slip and it will bind up the drive and probably break it.

      Tom Shepard I have since sold it for a Triumph Thruxton. I probably rode it more but I wanted to carve corners. It was going to need a paint job which was harder because it was powder coated.

    • @SpyderTom1

      @@landydrvr71 Awesome! I have several bikes so when I make the jump into Ural I think I will be fine. I am going to wait till the 2020 leftovers are being sold at closeout in a year or so before I get one. They made a lot of changes in model years 19 and 20. Love the Thruxton, its a great bike.

    • @landydrvr71
      @landydrvr71  4 роки тому +2

      The only thing I didn't like was the limited speed. I couldn't take it on longer 4-lane trips without feeling I would get run over. The newer bikes are quicker. Mine was a 2012 and carbed and not injected. I sold a Triumph Street Triple to get the Ural. I like the Thruxton better than the Street Triple. The Ural is completely a different experience. I might add a sidecar to the Thruxton if I feel the need.

    Ulric had to go WEEEE.... The color of your bike does make it look more vintage. Really like the windshield on the sidecar. Little dent on the nose of it but on a Ural it looks fine. Maybe because they have that vintage look and expect them to be used. Ural has been making a lot of changes in recent years and its nice to see.

    Btw, the trademark (yet taking a rule on the IMZ - makers of URAL) owned since dark times' 1992 by some ex-soviet citizen Ilya, living in US. Now URAL motorcycles has many foreign parts, so if you're speaking about "Russian parts are not very reliable" please remember this, because when URAL was 100% .ru/.su before destroying USSR, it was reliable on 99.5%. JFYI.

    • @TheHobbes01
      @TheHobbes01 7 років тому

      Of course it got less reliable after it got brembo brakes instead of the shitty russian drumbrakes.
      Reliable my ass. get real.

  • @nmr50
    @nmr50 8 років тому +1

    Another thingie you might want to know - about "not very precision" - I just want to tell you that AK47 automatic rifle _also_ made with "not very precision", but enough to be simple and RELIABLE, because it is made for all weather - snow, sand, fire.. and this is why American soldiers have been (sometimes/often) throw out their M-16 rifles - made with VERY precision, yet being hammered with sand, and thus going out of order - and taking other's side AK's rifles , during Iraq war '91. Or, might be, other times too.

    • @landydrvr71
      @landydrvr71  8 років тому +1

      I agree with your thoughts on the AK vs the M-16. I am a fan of the AKs as well. But in comparing a Ural to a Honda in metal quality and machining, the Ural is no Honda for reliability. I have spoken to people that had final drives break, wheels crack, the old alternators would blow and motors seize. I am also a fan of old British cars and bikes and those too are not as reliable as modern ones. The production methods that they use in the Ural factory are not quite as modern as most of today's modern factories. That being said I think given the proper care a Ural can be a pretty reliable machine but if you treat it like most people do modern cars and just put gas in it I think it would fail. You need to take care of it like we used to take care of things in the 1960's and those skills are sometimes hard to find today with most young people.

    • @nikos-giorgos
