- Riding a Ural with its attached sidecar among the aggressive, distracted drivers populating SoCal's highways and byways had me feeling I was learning a new X-Box game using a vintage Atari joystick.

I also have one. What a rush and a challenge. 70 mph on I-5 is not fun. 55 - 60 on secondary roads, it's in its element or 2 WD on jeep roads it is incredible. Nice change from years on a Harley. No going back now.
________________Ural forever !!!_________________He the BEST!!!!!!______[ Hi from Russia ]
I'm amazed at Americans, at their positivity...
The GearUp runs $15,999 USD, now (mid-2016). Ural sells a stripped-down 1WD version called the cT that starts at $12999. I haven't done much research, but partly due to their comparative rarity, they don't seem to depreciate in value all that much
if they're well tended to. But if you plan to be in to the ownership for the long haul, isn't that a good thing?
I'd concede that yes, this is A LOT of money, but suggest giving pause to the mindset that helps steer one to the conclusion that it's 'too expensive'. In many other countries, people get around just fine via public transit, on foot and by motorbike because a car doesn't make sense in their lives. As Americans, I think we're conditioned to NEED a car, but in many cases it is at least a semi-falsehood. As commutes get longer and more strained, weighing the pros and cons of keeping that car, and considering a bike as a serious commute / utilitarian NEED, the Ural could be in fact, quite practical. Even with 1-2 kids.
My husband and I are close to reaching the very conclusion that a Ural would be an investment that is unique, fun and practical for our lives. Firstly, we have pets and chose to have no children. Secondly, when we do go out, it's usually to walk or drive to a friend's home to hang out, or to go shopping. Since we have a 2-door coupe, it has only so much hauling capacity, anyway and nothing the Ural couldn't handle. All we need is updated rain gear and new helmets. Thirdly, if we can't haul it, we do what we already do; ask for a friend's help, have it shipped or rent a U-Haul. Fourthly, it's likely that
the Ural will be the last motorbike we own; since an Indian, Harley or Goldwing are even more out of the question for us, a Ural could finally give us a way to have a viable way to get around AND have a fun vehicle to haul considerable gear for road trips... all rolled into one!
Now, to get our scooters into selling condition and (likely) sell that car. Our goal is to purchase in 2017, if not sooner!
Urals are awesome!
My 2011 GU has been mostly reliable. Found a few loose screws but that is part of the regular maintenance. Unfortunately the engine died in June., into the dealer on June 26. Here it is August 8 and they still do not know what crapped out. And still not a clue as to when I'll get to ride again. I really enjoy the Ural, but if it takes over 6 weeks for WARRANTY work, I have to question the viability of the product. Good Luck.
Im mechanicly inclined and would have some fun with this Urals are fairly simple as well and with today's computer systems finding brute simplicity comes at a price don't look to one if your not willing to fix things or have an issue with garage custom
I used to ride this thing with my uncle back in Russia when we wanted to go fishing. Lots of fun.
This was actually quite good video, it covered the bases. The thing with the 2WD is that it’s really an off-road version, particularly in the UK (where I live) because we drive on the wrong/right side of the road. I had a military version years ago, good fun but only about 38HP.
It was originally a BMW but after WW2 the Russians claimed it. The benefit of the aging technology is that you can actually fix it with the supplied tool-kit, and you’ll need it.
i love it ! heavy duty rules! I've seen these playing in the snow up in tahoe.
I'd love one of those!
They do man! Check out the models on their website and click on the solo!
I drive my dad's ural to school every day : )
Excellent review! You did a great job explaining the unique ride experience, features, and best of all, no elevator/porno/rap music... We got to HEAR the bike. Now, if I can just scrounge up that 13k
Take a look at Chris Harris videos on aligning the Ural 2 wheel drives. Many of the Urals he says come out of the dealers with the sidecar terribly misaligned to the bike. If your Ural is pulling hard to one side betcha yours is one of those. Not hard to fix if you can wrench at all.
Glad I found this video. I've become very interested in the Touring version of this bike and this was very informative.
Love Ural! Very nice bike for me!
95% hand-built bikes.
@TonyFirelli I didn't mean to upset you, yes I live in UK, but I am from Lithuania and we used to have only Soviet machinery. I didn't mean that BMW is crap, it was good at it's time, the bmw r75 was made pre WW2. So I would say that it is a rather old design. :)
I think the paint scheme rocks
love it !!
great review
Во-во, радуйтесь, капиталисты, что мы для вас такие классные мотоциклы делаем!
nice review
i have a 2007 no problems. check the web many people ride them across the country
Is it possible to take the sidecar off, since it's 2wd, or would you have to get a "normal" bike + sidecar to be able to remove and ride without the sidecar?
@RocknLester2011 Will it pull itself up a muddy hill fully loaded down with two peeps & gear? Granted its not a race bike....... what kinda mileage? Could a person boost power with diff exhaust or carbs? I met a guy in AK with one, he loved it????
@TonyFirelli thought it was russian now now soviet. or was the other person speaking in a past tense?
I going to get one, Gearup
Nice video ! How would you rate or say about the rig reliability ?
Хорошая идея... покупать старый мотоцикл и реставрировать его.
Вот BMW бы такой...
@petemossinc Avril Lavigne is sold in the "music section" case is rested
great video
Ничего подобного, Урал доработан на базе БМВ! Тем более что он полностью производился в СССР! Сейчас он совершенствуется, с иностранными коплектующими что удручает, но радует что есть что-то что мы можем производить.
does the the 2wd use a differential or is it solid?
Oh by the way the KMZ factory in Kiev is working once again and producing NEW\OLD Dnepr bike and tricycles too (without the side car)! Unfortunately there’s no English version of the KMZ website. KMZ marketing and management is very bad so there’s no official export from Ukraine but who knows what the future holds. Good luck all!
how is the reliability? I hear a lot of complaints about Urals.
could the sidecar be removed for when you don't need it?
Belive me, those bikes are more fun then kicking ur boss in the ass. But they need fixing a lot. But u CAN fix them. Try a $25000 beemer. They tell u when too change the tires. Fixing? Vorget it.
Nice machine. Definitely would like to own one. But even if I could probably get one for say 7K, I'd probably have to go with an 80-series instead.
Not true. I saw an 07 for 8k on cycle trader. The deals are out there. Lurk around www.sovietsteeds.com the Ural forum. There's always stuff up for sale there too. Cheers
There was this video here, on youtube where two guys drove one of those to pick up an old, red Honda MB80, if I recall correctly, but I can't find it anywhere. Can someone please help me? ;-;
I've just found it. Through pinterest. Cause it is fucking unlisted on Motortrend's channel... I've spent a whole day looking for it.

I Like It!
There going for 15000 new in Canada.....I wish they were cheaper....
You can buy garage queens for half of that
Спасибо Американцам за любовь к нашем мотоцыклам. :)
Спасибо
I've had one.... they're great. But "original two-wheel-drive"? Come on!
@MrRussian19 Ural is offroad military bike not retro
could i cruise at 65-70 mph on the highway if need be ?
You're looking for a Ural Solo T
@Marciaus007Not copied but licensed, so your saying BMW sidecar motorcycles are crap? besides this thing proved itself, ride one. Your a second person I met from UK that tried to say shit about Soviet vehicles.
nice machine....
@TonyFirelli Used to be, but now it's "retro"
You lied. The Can Am Spyder is not a motorcycle.
I thought you said $33,000,,,, For that price, no way
If you have never owned a motorcycle before you should get a small cheap one first.
@choopdewoot like a civic?
True, but (!) New Urals are much higher quality than the old ones, which are produced in the Soviet Union!
--------------------------
achtung!!!!!!!!!!!! Price on the same new Ural in Russia $ 10,290!
This guy reminds me of Eli Roth
cool motorcycle and paintjob but who the fuck wants to be seen in a sidecar?
@RocknLester2011 TRUE....but where would I put my old fat dog? She would disown me if I left her at home.............
learn on a 125 or 250 first to avoid certain death.
and you'll never get a speeding ticket !
@tlococo99 hahahaha, well said.
ЭТо не старный мотоцикл! Произведен в 2011 году, у нас в Ирбите.
Good god! I want one but why so expensive? I guess you are paying for uniqueness and gawking factor.
не будем забывать что урал - это довоенный бмв
SERIOUSLY? you get a ural, the only motorcycle company that still makes retro bikes only to get it with some sort of horrible paint job, really?! you should have painted it classical black and white.
Hunter? haha
@XenoRacing - I agree. It's like riding a fat girl. It's cool until your friends see you.
Ural, not ''youral''
Some people would buy anything, even a poo if you package it nicely. Ural was crap in it's time and it still is now, nothing has changed, oh, the brakes have callipers :D and it's a copy of bmw and a shit copy.
Go home
the solo version looks cool but i heard the bike is shit
Way to much talking not enough driving a total bore!!!
