I hear you buddy! Stress can take many forms and you feel it in so many different ways. I suppose working from home can make it harder to 'de-stress' sometimes as when you're at home, you're at work too! I constantly find myself doing a little bit of this, or a little bit of that, or starting an edit in the evening 'to get a head start' when the Mrs says 'Are you seriously working again?' because she's just got home and wants to hang out. Life's weird man. Suicide pact?
I feel bad laughing at this, but that was bloody funny. At least the presentation of the message as opposed to the message itself. My work life balance is as good as it can be being a 5:2 ratio. And I agree by the way, that is bullshit. That is not balanced. I'm constantly moaning that "it'll be doing that shit..." (9-5 Mon-Fri) for the next 30 years. If that's not enough to get someone down I don't know what is!! Had no idea you suffered with stress and all the shite that comes with it, mate. You certainly hide it well. You're one of the most laid back people I know!! I suffer from similar stuff you've touched on... quite a lot as it happens.
Glad you liked it mate, made me laugh a bit watching it back. Sorry to hear you suffer too. I recently (last week) started seeing a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, apparently my easy going laid back approach is one of the ways i avoid confrontation. All very interesting stuff :)
I went to see a councillor many moons ago after a particularly bad time at a previous job. It's quite a funny story (I'll fill you in next time we're out) but ultimately it worked. I came out of the session feeling he needed more help than me!! If that was his intention the guy was a genuis. Ultimately my stress comes from anxieties, usually completely irrational I might add. But over time I've just tried to learn and accept that, on the whole, they're a massive overreaction and 99% of the time there was nothing to worry about at all.
Yeah, same as me really, I stress over the little things. The problem I have is I get caught in a loop in my mind going round and round on a subject until i get really worked up. After years of sleepless nights I figured if seeing someone helps a little its worth it.
Definitely. Sleep deprivation is one of the most debilitating things I've ever experienced. It's little wonder the military use it when interrogating/torturing people!
Mate I kinda feel lucky as in my job it's longer days but I'm off approx 3.5 days a week. Sometimes I'm mentally done in but it's nice if you hit a run. I mean I had 5 days off on the trot without using holidays. But again I'd love to work at home. Work takes over mate. It always will.
Stress is a very individual thing that an industry grew to deal with by making it a generic condition, identical across all those it afflicts. This is, of course, nonsense. One thing I've noticed is that it is particularly hard to deal with causes that have an organizational basis as an attempt to point it out can be seen as questioning the organization itself, which can have interesting side effects. I have found that trying to leave work at work, to insist upon oneself that stress does not need to come home with one can help. This only works so well, unfortunately. Exercise can help, but it can also (in my experience) free up the mind to dwell on irritations. Confronting the causes of stress is a minefield I have too much experience in. The most painful realization is that the thing that's bothering one might be of absolutely no concern - passively, or worse, actively - to who/whatever may be causing it. The advice I can give in this case is to acknowledge the stress but to try to not let it own you. This is absolutely not the same as trying to not be bothered by stress, not at all. Apologies for the wall of text. I have a lot to say about this sort of thing but it's surprisingly hard to actually say it...
very insightful message mate and interestingly you have touched on a few things my therapist did last week. I find the way ours brains work and how life events cause us to change and in some cases suffer from things like anxiety/stress very interesting.
I love my job but some folk above me less so lol ;-) I switch off the moment I leave the building though so that helps. I do shifts (days and nights) 12hrs at a time which means I may be there a while but less often if that makes sense? Currently over a 5 week period I do 7 day shifts, 7 night shifts and up to 7 flex shifts so have 2 weeks away from work over that time period. The balance is hard to achieve but it really REALLY helps if you can switch off when you walk out the door at the end of each shift.
That was funny about the whale music and sheep, it had me laughing out loud. I love philosophy and reading about it, it taught me a great deal on how humans operate, and what i like about it the most is that it doesn't tell you what to do, instead it focuses on trying to explain why we do the things we do. Understand that everything is a game, even your work, as with all games they have rules, what you are doing at the moment is using a less than optimal strategy in this game, i can tell you lots of things that can help, like for instance meditate for 15 minutes every morning before going to work, or go to the gym more often, i'm no expert to give advice but at the end you just have to figure a way to play the game right. By the way, do you ride in the rain and cold; or is it only on sunny weekends ?
fish and banana hi thanks for the comment. Good advice, especially the exercise thing that really helps. Yeah I ride in all weathers, more on the nice days though.
I know where you're coming from, what doesn't these days is how technology is so intrusive. Email is bad enough but we've recently rolled out Slack (messenger type thing) and that's going 24 x7! Owning a motorcycle goes a long, long way to relaxing me, although being on the roads can also cause stress :-o I found this video fascinating, that's for sharing.

Suicide pact?
Smo cheers for the comment mate. I'll pass on the suicide pack 😀

Fibroboy sad but true mate.
Must admit I get paid fuck all however.

BTW, that was a good rant! :D

I don't have trouble with work any more, I am in the great position to have retired early. My issue is bike/life balance, so you can never win!
Congrats on the early retirement. I know a few people who have bike/family life balance issues :)

DervMan thanks for the comment. You are totally right about email being so intrusive.
