Porsche set a new record for road-approved sports cars on the 20.6-kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife in the 911 GT2 RS on September 20. The record time of 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds was achieved in the presence of a notary and surpassed even Porsche’s own expectations.
Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars, said: “At the start of the development process, we set ourselves a lap time target for the GT2 RS of less than 7 minutes and 5 seconds. The credit for beating this target by 17.7 seconds goes to our development engineers, mechanics and drivers, who demonstrated an exceptionally strong team performance. This result makes it official: The GT2 RS is not only the most powerful, but also the fastest 911 ever built”.
This record was not a one-off: Lars Kern (30) from Germany and Nick Tandy (32) from the UK broke the previous record for road-approved sports cars (6 minutes, 52.01 seconds) in their first attempt and subsequently finished five laps in under 6 minutes, 50 seconds.
Andreas Preuninger, Director GT Model Line, says: “It’s not just the record time achieved by the GT2 RS that demonstrates the vehicle’s class, but also its consistent performance in every lap. We’re particularly proud of the fact that this was achieved with two different vehicles and two different drivers, as this underlines the GT2 RS’s ability to reproduce this record result over and over again”.
Porsche factory driver Tandy travelled straight from a six-hour race in Austin, Texas to the Nürburgring, swapping the Le Mans prototype Porsche 919 Hybrid for the 515-kW (700-hp) 911 GT2 RS with Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres in impressive style.
It was Lars Kern, a Porsche test driver by trade with a passion for racing, who ultimately set the final record time. Alongside the Carrera Cup Australia, Kern regularly competes in the VLN Endurance Championship on the Nürburgring and knows the Nordschleife inside out. The subsequent record lap began at 7:11 pm and finished 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds later in ideal outdoor conditions. As is customary for record drives, the time was measured along the 20.6-kilometre stretch. The vehicle’s average speed was 184.11 km/h.
The fastest and most powerful road-approved 911 celebrated its world premiere at the Festival of Speed in Goodwood in the UK at the end of June. At the heart of this high-performance sports car is a 515-kW (700-hp) six-cylinder biturbo flat engine. Weighing in at 1,470 kg with a full fuel tank, the lightweight two-seater accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds.
The rear-wheel drive Coupé has a top speed of 340 km/h and with its near-motorsport drive technology, the new 911 GT2 RS trumps its 3.6-litre predecessor by 59 kW (80 hp) and achieves a torque of 750 Newton metres (an increase of 50 Nm).

This only underlines how great Zonda R was all those years ago!
2RS, like McLaren LT did an incomplete lap, or 20,600 meters, while Zonda R and NIO EP 9 did the full 20,832 m lap and achieved 6:47.50 and 6:45.90 respectively.
That is 232 meters more; which takes about 4.24 seconds at those speeds. Do the math. LT`s time would be more like 6:47.46, not even close to NIO EP 9, and just about the same as Zonda R`s, which achieved the record 7 years ago in 2010.
Start and finish lines at the Nordschleife are not in the same place !
This only underlines how great the Porsche956 was all those years ago 6:11,13 from 1983 this is the reference for the ZondaR this is a Racecar and not Public Road legal the NIO EP 9 was also not Street legal on his record laps . 6:47.3 is not bad for a much cheaper not modified car and you can still go on the Porsche Website and start the 911GT2 RS configurator. with a realy small series like 5 ZondaR or 6 NIO EP 9 is it easy to build a extrem and very expensive Car the GT2RS is also a limited Edition but the Limit is 2500.

Driver hits every apex, knows when to keep all four wheels on the tarmac for max grip in the fast corners and rides the curbs for shortest line in the slower corners. That takes skill. Kudos to you driver, well done
And on a bumpy/often uneven course like Nordschleife at high speeds makes it even harder to keep all 4 tires on the road at all times... This driver is a legend.

Critics is legid for sure, but to criticise this performance is like criticising Messi on a run when he dribbles around 4 players and the goalkeeper and makes a goal. It just makes no sense, but shows how less people understand about track conditions, setup and skill and nearly perfect "robotic" reactions and muscle memory.

But... The POOR Chrysler Cars and those "DAMN YANKEES MEN" behind them... Like their Car... They probably don't have access to anything other than VERY OLD (Viper..) Technology.. Those Poor US-Men... azalru We will see about that. There are plenty of machines that on paper should be faster and so on... My point is: It's in Porsche DNA to win.
azalru even if the Tesla Roadster is accelerating as promised, I don‘t think it has a chance on a lap. First of all, the batteries overheat, as seen in the model S, which can‘t be driven fast for a long time as it automatically brakes you down if the batteries start getting hot. Second is Vmax, it probably cannot pull velocities above 300 kmph. Third is aerodynamics, I can‘t see how the Roadster doesn‘t just slips away in a corner (maybe the assortment of batteries handles this but who knows yet). And the last point is, can it actually run in complete full power without the batteries being empty at the half of the track? We don‘t know yet. It will definitely be interesting to see, as there are so many more things important for a race car than just 0-100 and horsepower.

Much of the credit for the ultra quick time should go to the driver -- about as clean as you'll see. Top speed impressive 312 Kph (193 mph). They had been lapping the car in the 6:50 range until Kern took the wheel.
