Boogerman had one button on the 6 button controller which was for Taunting (character pose and yelling out "Booger") which if I remember correctly was the Z button and couldn't be done on the 3 button controller.

That's cool, I never knew that. I had a 3rd party 6 button controller that really wasn't a bad controller but for some reason I used the 3 button official controllers over it because I really had no games that made use of the 6 button ones.

    • @Dorelaxen
      @Dorelaxen 4 місяці тому +8

EGM was all OVER the place with their reviews back in the day. Much like GamePro giving nearly every game sky high ratings, EGM would give, say, Final Fantasy 2/4 middling reviews. You know, a game today considered one of the greatest of all time, and they let their SPORTS game reviewer have at it. Crap like that is why I never trust critics and reviewers unless literally every source is giving something rock bottom ratings, whether it be movies, TV or games.

*To the tune of the 1960's Spider-Man theme*
♫Boogerman! Boogerman! Does whatever a booger can!
    Spits a hock, any size,
And makes a sneeze with snot that flies!
Hey there! There goes the Boogerman!
    Is he gross?
    Listen bud,
    He's got gonorrhea for blood.
Can he swing from a thread?
No, but if he farts, you're dead!
    Hey, there!
    There goes the Boogerman!
    In the chill of night,
    At the free night buffet,
    Like a silent fart,
He arrives and is here to stay!
    Boogerman, Boogerman!
Takes a dump in a garbage can!
    Gruesome, lame,
    He's ignored,
    Bile is his reward.
To him, life is a great big epic fail,
    Wherever there's a hang nail,
    You'll find the Boogerman!♫

Boogerman was seriously one of my favorite games and one of my favorite action heroes of the 90s. Although I owned only an SNES I mostly played Boogerman on my cousin's Genesis. I have since also played it on the SNES but the Genesis remains my favorite way to play. I loved its sense of humor. Always wanted a sequel, but unfortunately that hasn't happened. I'll have to give this one another play... I have so much nostalgia for it. A truly great, one of a kind game and totally unforgettable hero.

Yup, and I kinda wonder why. Like, what was it about this particular era that made it so popular, only to then more or less die out?
I mean, there have been cartoons since then which dabbled in the stuff. The amazing misadventures of flapjack loved to have scenes where the animation style would change to some really deranged Ren and Stimpy stuff, and Adult Swim's got a TON of shows over the years that can be as gross as the worst of them... but it got SUPER big then in the 90's, and then never again. Really wonder what happened there.

The 90's was the time of "extreeeme!1" and so forth, you'd think a game in intentional bad taste with cool animation would seem like a good idea... but I also remember reviews saying it wasn't much fun, and quite frankly it was competing with Donkey Kong Country, Sonic and Knuckles and Earthworm Jim. ALL of these characters have way stronger appeal than Boogerman, who just doesn't feel like he's as strong a mascot as any of those other guys. He just doesn't look as cool, and I can see that kids going by the cover will compare Boogerman to others and find him, if not lacking, then definitely a lower priority. Add on to that the magazines are REALLY bad at selling Boogerman: I had no idea until now that the animations were so smooth as they were! In stills where you just have the, as SLX said, paltry backgrounds and unmoving sprites, Boogerman is just not as compelling as any of the aforementioned games.
So you have a game you have to see in action to understand the appeal, IF you see the appeal in the first place, and which releases in competition with some of the genres kings. No wonder Boogerman attempts to break wind just got it broken instead.

One of the best platformers on the system, imo. Music is awesome, gameplay is fun, only negative I would say is the bosses follow the same set pattern with each one (attack, then switch sides).

Nice! It's definitely one of my favorite Genesis games I owned back in the day! It's great to see ya review it because you almost never hear anyone ever talk about it and honestly, it's actually an ok game beyond it's gross-out humor gimmick.
I remember when I picked it out as a kid and my mother was just completely aghast and couldn't believe something like it existed! Thankfully, she still bought it for me! It might not have the best game but I still got a ton of enjoyment out of it and just thought it was one of the coolest and most unique ideas for a game.
I also remember trying to explain the game to my friends at school, and I always got the weirdest looks and most thought I was making it all up! I remember even being picked on, because I was talking about such gross things like that...I don't think I ever met another kid that owned the game, which was kinda weird because you'd think it would've sold pretty well or at least would've been a little bit more well-know.

It’s really not a terrible game, but for all its great animation, I absolutely get burned out by the neon green everywhere- even with later stages changing it up, it still feels overly monochromatic. Had they used a little texture in the vast pools of green, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to me.

This gives me PilotRedSun vibes. Like this would be the fake game that one of the characters is playing.

Idk if you've ever played Keio The Flying Squadron 2 on the Saturn but I feel it's an overlooked under appreciated platformer full of charm and wackiness similar to games like Dynamite Heady and Earthworm Jim.

I'm in the same boat as you were. Messed with this for a bit but never really dove in all the way when it's humour didn't hook me right off the bat. Maybe I'll take a closer peek.

This is one of those games that you just need to play to understand. I only ever saw the ads for it on GamePro magazine and comic books. I never played it and never knew anyone who had. My friends and I turned our noses up at it(get it?!) and stuck to Sonic and Streets of Rage and such. But these days, with all the reviews out there, it looks fun as hell.

So I was eight years old around 2004 when I first played this game. I absolutely ate it up because I was discovering shows like south park and beavis and butthead around the same time. The fact that the toilets worked just like the pipes in mario was enough to make me giggle. As an adult I still think it's an alright game if you can tolerate some of its western design tendencies (fake walls, some weird collision detection) but not as good as something like earthworm Jim.

yea i mean its alright, it is well animated and the music is decent for that sound engine. Much like you I was like 18-19 at the time and my genesis had been kind of sidelined as I played mostly on PC at the time. One week during the summer, a buddy of mine's family had to go out of town to deal with some inheritance property or some stuff and asked if his little brother Mike could crash with us so he didn't miss a day camp for football, parents said sure, it was on my way to work so no biggie... long story short he brought up a stack of genesis games and this was one of them. It was fun but he mostly played my games cause they were all the older "black box" ones he didnt have

It's pretty good. My only criticisms are for the stages that I think could be subdivided into just three levels to not make the gameplay so boring. And the bosses could only have 5 or 6 of HP, so the confrontations don't get too long.

Regardless of how SLX feels about this game (currently have it paused on an advertisement, so I didn't see the full review yet, and frankly, I don't REALLY feel the need to since this is a game I played already...), I never felt this was a bad game. To me, I always felt it was an underrated gem of the 16-bit era, especially when it you realize it's target audience were little kids who like gross-out humor.
Even as an adult, it's the little things that make me enjoy this game. Sure, the bosses are pretty standard with biased-as-all-hell hitboxes and the level designs tend to get repetitive, but the character animations and kick-ass music make it all worthwhile to me. This is a game I currently have in my short but sweet Genesis Game Library, and the haters always make me want to come right back to it to say, "Don't listen to 'em, Booger Boy...You're fine just the way you are..."
Also, while I'm here, I may as well be the minority here and say the Kickstarter deserved better.
*IMMEDIATE EDIT AFTER WATCHING THE REVIEW:* Well, just found out SLX never played this game up until now, but for what it's worth, he still played it through and seemingly had a good time, farts and all...Proud of you, man.
