@@jacobross1971 Mine didn't overclock at all because I had a shitty P45 MSI motherboard with it, so during the whole time I ran this CPU at the stock speed of 2.83 Ghz.
I used a Core 2 quad Q9650 paired with a 1050 ti back a year and a half ago. I was able to play the witcher 3 at 60fps, but the 8 gigs of 667mhz ddr2 made loading a pain in the butt! All of my games were stored on a western digital blue SSD. One thing to note is that I used the Intel DG33TL motherboard.
That Crysis 3 performance is actually pretty damn impressive for such an old chip. I remember swooning over this thing back in the day when I had an E8400!

I would still keep my old fellow Q9550, but the lack of the SSE4.2 instructions made me change it. That's why AC:O, Quantum Break, RDR2 and such games don't work on it.
In Ubi games like The Division 2, The Crew 2, or newer Watch_Dogs game, it needs AVX instructions too so older CPUs like Core 2 Quads and Phenoms will probably need to upgrade
You should really test this thing with Windows XP and Games from the era. I would love to see you venturing more into Retro-Gaming Style Videos even if that's not your typical thing.
I got a q9650 in a free faulty gaming PC and it actually bested my fx6300 new build at the time. Needless to say I was a bit miffed but I returned the 6300 bundle and used this up till 2018 when I got my Ryzen. This was such a solid chip at 3.4ghz and it's my uni pc to this day. I'm also watching this in a hurricane.
Not a QX but I once used a Q6600 CPU based pc, it lasted surprisingly far until things started to feel like it had the speed of molasses during it's last year in use.

I would only sell it if i find an Original Rampage 1 paired with a QX 9770 or 9775 and 8gb of 1000mhz+ memory. Alternatively i would also take a Dual Socket 775/771 board, if it is from some kind of 'Gaming' Line, and not a workstation board. I've been dreaming of the ultimate socket 775 build for years now.

In all fairness that is more of a 720p cpu at most. Nothing wrong with the video but it would have been nice to see the average on resolutions the cpu was made for compared to the 1080p. I’m always gonna be a used/older hardware fan and love seeing them being used.

Can remember when the earlier dualcore Intel Extreme 3.2 processor came out, in 2005. I was upgrading my PC which had 1st gen DDR-266mhz ram. "It was a single core 2.0ghz Pentium 4 based PC, from 2002." Back then a GB or two was all that was required to play an MMORPG like Everquest. " This thing would have been an optimal build a couple years later. I still remember the first computer I ever used at age 5. An 5.25 inch floppy based Apple 2.
I love this CPU, it is in of the top spots of my collection. Right next to the QX9770, which is sooo incredibly power-hungry and hot it's quite a worse chip than the "lower positioned" QX9650 is lol. If I run it, I run it at 4,4 GHz 11x400 on a P5Q-E, with a Mugen 5 cooler. The P5Q series are some of the best boards out there for 775 IMO
I remember when I used to work retail that I won an Intel qx6850 from intel retail edge (just the cpu). It replaced my core 2 duo e6600. Cheapest motherboard I could find was $220 retail. For the time, it was crazy fast but it was murder to use in the summer because it would heat up the room +10 degrees. Had to spend $100 on cooling after I kept getting overheating warnings on my board. Sold it after the economy took a dump in 2009-2010 and I went back to school.
I actually used the non-extreme version of this CPU, which was the Q9650 up until 2015 or 2016. I still have it today and would consider it a pretty good chip for a basic setup. There are obviously better alternatives out there but I would recommend getting a Q9650 as a last ditch effort to squeeze more life out of an LGA 775 system.
I still own 2 Asus P5Qs as backup... I normally pair it with a Xeon E5450 at 3,6 GHz and 8gb RAM. That's nearly the same setup. Nice to see a video of what it can and cannot do. Thanks. :)
My first prebuilt was back in 2006 i think, core 2 duo e2400, 2.8ghz, 2 cores 2 threads, then in 2013, another prebuilt, amd fx 4170 quad core 4.2ghz, 4 cores 4 threads, now in 2020, my first build from scratch, ryzen 7 2700x, 8 core 16 thread, interestingly enough i have only ever had the money for budget builds so around about £390 each for the first 2 and £500 for the newest one, fascinating to see that arc over time

I got a dell with a core 2 quad and it seems to work well enough for what it is. I have a 750 ti 2gb in it with 8gb DDR2. It plays better than I expected!
I was using a Q6600 with BSEL mod (the black electrical tape trick that fools the front end bus frequency from 1066 to 1333Mhz). I ran with that mod to 3.0Ghz for over 6 years, a 25% increase to the stock 2.4Ghz. The power supply started to fail at 11 years...then the motherboard. For those 11 years I did quite a few upgrades, for instance 64bit WIN 8.1 from 32 bit Vista, to take full advantage of the 16 GB RAM. Of course, an SSD really made the biggest, followed by a GPU upgrade to the GTX 1050. I could play WoT in low settings at reasonable frame rates for my gamer capabilities...which arguably suck. For general productivity, it is still a decent platform. I upgraded to the venerable X79 platform with E5-1650V2 ($62), 32GB 1600 DDR3 RAM, and ASUS P9X79Pro ($20)...new case with tempered glass and RGB...new 650W PS, GTX 980; an overall update that cost me just over 610 bucks.
I very recently upgraded from an Core2Quad q9650 to a Ryzen 5 3600. In newer titles such as Forza Horizon 4 and Gears of War 5 I went from the mid/high 20's fps to over 200 fps on the CPU side of things. That q9650 served me well for many many years. Now about that 4GB GTX 760...

What is so amazing about this.... If the chip was made for high performance, and is in fairly good condition, then 13 years later it will still be capable of doing what it was made for. I had a laptop for 7 years, and what broke it was just the fan. All the other parts were in great condition.
I had a C2E Q9300 in a Dell Precision laptop years ago. It ate battery and could happily heat a small/medium room. It was a killer for mobile gaming at the time though!
I have just retired my Intel board Core2 quad 9650 for no other reason than it would only take 8 gig of memory. It was originally my XP dev box long ago and when the first board started to get a bit unreliable, I got an identical Intel board from Germany. It doesn't have the grunt of late model i7s but it was always a great performer.
The Core 2 Quad CPUs were pretty cool back in those days. However, all of them are just 2 Core 2 Duo's strapped together and each of the chip modules had to use the FSB in order to communicate with each other. That usually isn't a big deal but on my old Q8200 based machine there were certain situations when I would multi-client a now mostly defunct MMO where I could saturate the FSB and completely tank FPS as a result. To the point where an older Athlon X2 4000 based PC with an older video card running the same amount of clients and same graphics settings would be faster than my Q8200 based PC! I was so glad when Intel finally moved past the FSB after the Core 2 days! I think some of the games tested in this video are running into that FSB situation when utilizing 3 or 4 cores and the low FPS is a result.
Looking for ideas? You've touched on this in the past, but I think a definitive 2020 version of "best GPU to balance with various CPU generations". For instance, I have a 3770K i7 and it seems to pair well with a GTX 1070 or even 2-way SLI. Picking a good GPU for each major generation of CPU would be helpful!
Ah ... 2007. Back when you got 2.2 dollars to the pound. I had some good trips to the USA back then. I was running a C2D 6300 back then with a huge OC, paired with an X1950 XTX. A year or so later I did a full system rebuild with an i3-540 (again, huge OC) and a pair of HD4770's. Once Starcraft II was released I had to ditch the ATI's for a GTX570.
I had the Q9450, and it served me well for about 5 years, I remember dual core was usually the recommended specs for gaming back then, then it slowly moved to quad core, got by fine with it paired with my HD5850, longest lasting system I ever had probably......
Budget version of this: Socket 775 Mainboard, Xeon E5450, mod Board and CPU for the Xeon to run on that board, update microcodes (Some boards don't even require that), overclock and boom - stable 4GHz almost every time. Those Xeons cost next to nothing online aswell.

I can't believe that 13 years later threadrippers and ryzen cpus will be slow. We're already in the 7nm process. So will have CPUs with smaller than nm process. The thought of that just blows my mind.
Compared this CPU to my old Phenom II X4 940 BE It's pretty much the same performance, kinda happy to see the results for the games I could never buy full price lol In these games, the perfect fit are probably the GTX 1050 Ti or below for the QX6550, since it has roughly half of the 1660 Ti's performance and 1660 Ti only used ~45% during testing.
Still got my qx9650 on the asus p5e3 ws pro with 8gb ddr3 ram Overclocked to 3.81ghz on air cooling. Paired with an rx570 8gb. Its old but gold.🤗 Still does the job for most games until 2016 in 1080p
Using a Q9650 instead, which does SSE 4.1 at just 95W TDP at stock over the QX9650, on a Gigabyte EP35-DS3R motherboard, which can easily be overclocked from 3.0 to 3.6GHz via the front side bus, with a BeQuiet! Shadow Rock LP cooler. Also using it with a 2GB EVGA 750 Ti SC, 4x2GB G.Skill DDR2 1000 memory, and an EVGA 550 G2 PSU.

You can actually play quantum break (as well as control) with a modded .DLL file. That's what I use and it's a surprisingly decent experience

We used these processors for 3d and After Effects when i7 were the new expensive thing. Good CPUs

What is so amazing about this.... If the chip was made for high performance, and is in fairly good condition, then 13 years later it will still be capable of doing what it was made for.
I had a laptop for 7 years, and what broke it was just the fan. All the other parts were in great condition.

I had a C2E Q9300 in a Dell Precision laptop years ago. It ate battery and could happily heat a small/medium room. It was a killer for mobile gaming at the time though!
I had a Q9650 back in the day. It ran nicely at 4.35GHz watercooled.
I have just retired my Intel board Core2 quad 9650 for no other reason than it would only take 8 gig of memory. It was originally my XP dev box long ago and when the first board started to get a bit unreliable, I got an identical Intel board from Germany. It doesn't have the grunt of late model i7s but it was always a great performer.

My E5200 still does what I need it to do.
The Core 2 Quad CPUs were pretty cool back in those days. However, all of them are just 2 Core 2 Duo's strapped together and each of the chip modules had to use the FSB in order to communicate with each other. That usually isn't a big deal but on my old Q8200 based machine there were certain situations when I would multi-client a now mostly defunct MMO where I could saturate the FSB and completely tank FPS as a result. To the point where an older Athlon X2 4000 based PC with an older video card running the same amount of clients and same graphics settings would be faster than my Q8200 based PC! I was so glad when Intel finally moved past the FSB after the Core 2 days! I think some of the games tested in this video are running into that FSB situation when utilizing 3 or 4 cores and the low FPS is a result.
I recently built a q9550 tower for about $40. Nice little box and a great bargain.

Looking for ideas? You've touched on this in the past, but I think a definitive 2020 version of "best GPU to balance with various CPU generations". For instance, I have a 3770K i7 and it seems to pair well with a GTX 1070 or even 2-way SLI. Picking a good GPU for each major generation of CPU would be helpful!

Ah ... 2007. Back when you got 2.2 dollars to the pound. I had some good trips to the USA back then. I was running a C2D 6300 back then with a huge OC, paired with an X1950 XTX. A year or so later I did a full system rebuild with an i3-540 (again, huge OC) and a pair of HD4770's. Once Starcraft II was released I had to ditch the ATI's for a GTX570.
I really enjoy these videoes and getitng a look at what once was the top of the line stuff to get being reduced to "nothing".

I had the Q9450, and it served me well for about 5 years, I remember dual core was usually the recommended specs for gaming back then, then it slowly moved to quad core, got by fine with it paired with my HD5850, longest lasting system I ever had probably......

Actually, you can play quite a lot of games on that CPU, including quite a lot of not that old classics.
Budget version of this: Socket 775 Mainboard, Xeon E5450, mod Board and CPU for the Xeon to run on that board, update microcodes (Some boards don't even require that), overclock and boom - stable 4GHz almost every time. Those Xeons cost next to nothing online aswell.

A Q9650, a MSI P55 Neo, a GTX 960 4gb, 4x 2gb DDR2 Ramsticks and a Sharkoon VG7-W red had already been purcased. Only need a SSD and a PSU.

I can't believe that 13 years later threadrippers and ryzen cpus will be slow. We're already in the 7nm process. So will have CPUs with smaller than nm process. The thought of that just blows my mind.
Compared this CPU to my old Phenom II X4 940 BE
It's pretty much the same performance, kinda happy to see the results for the games I could never buy full price lol
In these games, the perfect fit are probably the GTX 1050 Ti or below for the QX6550, since it has roughly half of the 1660 Ti's performance and 1660 Ti only used ~45% during testing.

You can get some boards for that CPU which will allow you to use DDR3 RAM. It does make quite a difference in performance.
That's why I'd rather upgrade my current LGA775 PC (HP Pavilion a6515f) to a Q9550: It supports only DDR2.

Using a Q9650 instead, which does SSE 4.1 at just 95W TDP at stock over the QX9650, on a Gigabyte EP35-DS3R motherboard, which can easily be overclocked from 3.0 to 3.6GHz via the front side bus, with a BeQuiet! Shadow Rock LP cooler.
Also using it with a 2GB EVGA 750 Ti SC, 4x2GB G.Skill DDR2 1000 memory, and an EVGA 550 G2 PSU.
