Moffat is the GOAT of New Who! When he hit, his scripts are the absolute best of the era. When he misses, it’s usually because he was overambitious rather than because he was playing it safe. I really respect him for quietly touching up all the scripts in his seasons, who knows how many brilliant lines and moments he’ll never get credit for. Welcome back! Overall Moffat is my favourite as well RTD and Chibnall are also great I love them as well but I would say Moffat is overall my favourite of the modern series probably because series 5 is when I started watching the show so it's the most nostalgic era for me especially series 5 and 6
WE'RE BACK!! Yeah s5 is definitely nostalgic for me too although basically all of dr who is getting nostalgic for me nowadays. I'm kinda already nostalgic for the 60th lmao
Just rewatched S11, and even though I always liked the Chibnall era, it was much better than I remembered, especially on character developments. I cried when Grace died and could really connect with Ryan, Yaz and Graham (now that I am familiar with them, the four companions are not overwhelming). What I liked about S11 is the slower pace that alows to breathe between S10 and S12, and also how "normal" the companions are. It is nice to see how everyday people would react to being thrown on an hostile alien planet - former companions were less "normal" in their own way (Amy knowing about the Doctor since she was 8, Clara having fallen through time, etc)
Even if his long-term plotting cpuld be grating at times, i can't aay i was ever bored during this era of the show. If Dr. Who makes you ask yourself "how is this show real" at least three or four times a season, it's doing its job!
The Moffat era is definitely my favorite. It has some downs, I don’t like the season split between the Ponds and Clara, and I’m not a fan of Bill, but overall I love it!
When the world needed him most, he returned. Before going into the video I hope to hear your extended thoughts on the Monks Trilogy. In other news I stumbled on an SFX magazine from 1996 with reviews of the VNAs and the TV movie and I thought that was pretty cool.
I should've talked about it more. Extremis is top tier imo. Pyramid is decent enough and Lie of the Land is disappointing with several standout moments (specifically the bits with Missy and Peter Capaldi's outfit)
@@dwfan91- I think a major issue is that the Monks are basically different enemies in each episode. In Extremis they're just super technologically advanced and master strategists who use the Shadow World to plan their invasions. In Pyramid they're nigh-omnipotent gods who can turn people into dust with a touch and restore sight to the blind(I think the fact they chose their forms to reflect their view of humanity has a place here too). Then in Lie they're just worse 1984. It really sucks because they're super interesting villains that I would kill to see done justice in the show or EU.
@@idle_speculation I think they're best off in Extremis but I think a plan must've changed somewhere because in that episode there seems to be a reason why they're *monks* specifically that's never brought up again afterward
@@dwfan91- BTW just wanted to say as a fellow commentary track listener (not just DW), I'm glad that you mentioned them. They add so much. Also your point about the BBC having ntg had me rolling but so true.
I feel like the Moffat era was so far the most consistent era of nuwho. For me personally it never reached the highest highs of my favorite individual episodes of the original RTD era (Waters of Mars and Midnight as examples). But I also feel like it never came close to being as bad as my least favorite episodes of the original RTD era. I feel like Moffat was super good at writing the Doctor as a character specifically. He really makes the character shine, and I liked that he really leaned into making the Doctor feel alien. And he introduced my favorite nuwho Doctor with Peter Capaldi. I also think he was really ambitious, which I appreciate. Even if you have problems with some of his choices, or feel some things got dropped without much payoff it would be hard I feel to argue you were bored while watching it.
I would actually disagree. I think the Moffat Era *does* have the highest highs (at least for me )and also the lowest lows. Series 8 and 9 specifically feel hella inconsistent to me. As I say in the video, you have Mummy on the Orient Express and In the Forest of the Night directly after each other. That is a CRAZY whiplash. Flatline is in my top 10 NuWhos but Kill the Moon is one of my worst of all time. That said, Series 5 is the best series of the modern show and also the most consistent so you do have a point there
@@dwfan91- Yeah I can see what you mean. I do agree that series 8 and 9 are very inconsistent, and probably the most inconsistent of any of the series as a whole. I think for me I feel the era as a whole feels more consistent in its overall vibe and direction, even with some low points. For me the worst episodes of Nuwho are the last of the original RTD era. I like the Saxon master, but I feel like RTD got so strange with how he was used in those episodes. I like parts of those episodes, but so much of it was just so out there, and I went from being so hyped to just like "what is happening?" for most the episode. lol. BTW love your videos and your positive approach to discussing the show.
I cannot agree with you enought about the vibes of Series 7b. I do NOT get why people hate Clara as a companion, she's cool as hell, apart from the nanny bit, but thats only important in like 2 episodes, and one of them is Nightmare in Silver so it doesn't count. Gonna be honest, I did not care for Amy ever since she tried to force herself on the Doctor. 7b just has immaculate vibes. Purple Coat > Tweed Coat
I liked her with Capaldi, but not with Smith. I think she really suffers from the half season after the ponds. I think modern Clara comes off as the most boring Clara in that part of her tenure
Capaldi is my favorite Doctor, and Clara is my favorite companion, and both of them together are the absolute height of the show for me -- especially Series 9. Favorite series ever. I have to say though, I think her complete rubbish understanding of technology in Bells of Saint John is a little silly, and Nightmare in Silver is probably the weakest episode in 7b (though Clara is the best part of it, and second best part was Porridge). With that said, I still loved her time with Matt Smith, and Cold War especially I feel is incredibly overlooked and underrated.
When I see Moffat in interviews, he always comes across like a complete arsehole. Great writer though. I think series 8 might be my second favourite after series 5, especially if you count the 2014 Christmas special as a finale. The only real duds for me are the heist one and the forest one. A lot of that is maybe appreciating the ideas more then the execution, admittedly. I love the Doctor and Clara's boyfriend hating each other, it's a weird and fun dynamic. The Doctor being a bit rude and nasty and ruthlessly pragmatic ("he was dead already, I was saving us") is really cool, and takes the character in a way different direction from Matt Smith. Also the Doctor pushing Clara too far and her telling him to clear off, and her going mad with grief and trying to force him to change history, are the two exact things I was expecting to happen in the second half of series 6 when the Doctor failed to save Amy's baby. It's like Steven Moffat can read my mind, and that's why he's the GOAT
I prefer RTD1. During Moffat Era the series arcs were very convoluted and I am not a fan of how Moffat writes a lot of women as his fantasies. His female characters often end up very predictible and boring. Also, he couldnt handle daleks or cybermen for most of his run. The sociopolitical commentary was also weaker while even less subtle than RTD's
@@dwfan91- I realize my comment may sound quite harsh, so lemme add that Moffat Era has its moments. And even the flaws are somewhat interesting, the Era doesnt have lower quality than RTD1 because Moffat was a coward and tried to milk money but mostly because of his personal flaws and overambition, which is somewhat honourable
Needed this vid today. God bless you and god bless the Moff. Commenting on Doctor Who TV during 2011-2014 was the peak of my childhood and it was Moff’s mental schemes and incredible writing that inspired it all.
This is really random, but what is the song that starts at 37:50? It's really pretty and I swear I've heard it before but don't know what it's called or where it's from. Also, as a 12 stan and by extension a Moffat enjoyer I love this video. I TOTALLY agree with you on 7B’s pure vibes, the way it contrasts both 7A and Series 8 is just utterly perfect and I feel like it improves both by comparison. They don’t exactly mog it, but they’re just different, and it makes it all just look and feel better. Especially going from 7B to Series 8. Idk how to explain it in words tbh but yeah. ALSO YES FLATLINE IS PEEEEEEEEAK. Keep up the epic positivity and awesome content! Hope you're feeling alright dude.
I don't really talk about what I think of the Moffat era, but that's because I thought everyone just knew it was good! I love rewatching certain episodes again, and again. I prefer RTD's story arcs (he struggles with ending 2-parters though), but when it comes to favourite new who episodes, most are written by Moffat. Another great video BTW.
I think if I look at all the eras of the NewWho show, taking off the nostalgia goggles, it's easy for me to say that while I prefer the RTD1 Era's High Points, Moffat's Era is probably the overall "best", even if it's lows were *low*, people seem to forget that really the majority of RTD's first run was kinda bleh. (Prepare for yappery). Series 1 is easily the most tightly packed series overall, everything in that series felt like it mattered, even if the episode was kinda whatever, always a brilliant start. Series 2 was... honestly mostly a miss. Only highlights for me are probably Impossible Planet/Satan Pit and Doomsday. (I like School Reunion but being real it's only saved by the exceptional casting of Antony Head and re-casting of Elizabeth Sladen). Series 3 I wanna split in half. You have the first half, which is mostly your middle-of-the-road "yeah, this is good :)" Doctor Who, but the back end of Series 3 is stuffed with banger after banger after banger. Human Nature/Family of Blood into Blink into Utopia into Sound of Drums/Last of the Timelords. That's, like, six 9/10 Episodes in a row. Series 4 is obviously the most consistently "good" series in the RTD1 Era. There's no a single episode in there I'd rate below a 7/10, it all slaps and acts as a perfect climax to the entire Tennant Era. The first 3 series in the RTD1 Era felt like it's own thing that was building to itself, with Series 4 feeling like a victory lap before a cooldown into the Moffat era. There's no denying the vibe of Series 5 is immaculate, and I feel it's also really the first series to *not* wrap up its story arc at the end. It wraps up the character arcs, and the overall plot, but the overarching plot stays out there. It leads itself into Series 6, which if you ask me has some of the strongest stories in the Smith era, only really let down by deciding we only needed a 1 Part Finale so we could have whacky adventures with James Corden again (even if I do like Craig). Series 7 of Doctor Who is the 7th Series of Doctor Who. But seriously, Series 7a is incredibly fun and also includes the greatest episode of all time *A Town Called Mercy* and I will go to the GRAVE defending this episode. The decision to split the series clearly comes from a need to lighten Moffat's workload (Sherlock's Final Season, Matt Smith's Final Doctor Who Season, and the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary all at the same time is NOT ideal), and it only kinda works. We all know the various 7b arguments of "Victorian Clara was more interesting", "The Impossible Girl has no character", "Why is Matt Smith in his emo phase?", but honestly I'd say it overall comes to... one of the conclusions of all time. Rewatching it all it just becomes clear that the Matt Smith era was just a warm up to what Moffat *really* had up his sleeve. Series 8-10 are a masterpiece. No notes. 10/10. Series 11-13 feel... wonky. I remember hating it with a passion at the time, but looking back on it the whole era just has this vibe of... something's going on behind the scenes. Chibnall himself admitted the finale to Season 11 was the first draft script (and it shows). Series 12 improves somewhat, but we all know where it's heading to, so I'll skip over that bit and just say that Villa Diodati slaps unfathomably hard. Series 13 is the Lockdown Series and I feel enough has been said about it already to the point I couldn't really add anything. We're still in the infancy of RTD2, so I'll reserve judgement, but so far in my opinion it's off to one of the starts of all time. Nothing so bad it makes me wanna rip my skin off, nothing so great it makes me wanna start building a shrine to Russell in my bedroom. Just an overall "yeah this is good but we need more of it" vibe.
I think for me (prepare for your yappery to be matched) Series 1 is one of the most different and unique steps Doctor Who has ever taken. It's bold, new, *daring* - a lot of people at the time forget how _edgy_ it was. It was meant to be a gritty reboot whereas people at the time only focus on the 2000s 'camp.' It's meant to be brutal, confrontational and above all emotionally honest. It hits on a lot of feelings people had at the time that a lot of people didn't even know they were feeling. It's genius writing in more ways than one and likely cannot ever be repeated. Series 2 lacks a lot of the depth of the first series, instead focusing more on the surface level romance and 'everyone' died moments. I think the most obvious thing to point to to show this is the character of Rose. In the first series I would call her one of the best characters in the show up to that point and is just so layered. Billie Piper's performance is great in both series but her character in the second series is so flanderized it's crazy. David Tennant is of course a great Doctor but Series 2 is for me a crazy step down. Series 3 is then amazing. One of the biggest leaps up in quality of the whole show imo. Everything; the writing, direction, character dynamics, everything is improved almost tenfold. You know I love the character of Martha so even episodes like the Lazarus Experiment which are... realistically probably an 'ok' episode is elevated for me. Smith and Jones, Gridlock, the Dalek 2 parter and hell even the Shakespeare Code are all great in my opinion and when we get into that 2nd part of the series, it's arguably the strongest run of episodes so far in the reboot. Even as someone who criticises Blink, it is undeniable how big a step forward it was for the show (even though it had rather low viewing figures, making that reason #500 why ratings don't matter.) The Family of Blood 2 parter is incredible and the finale is great. Unpopular opinion I know but potentially the peak of RTD1. Series 4 is pretty great too though. Donna is a brilliant character, a lot of the episodes are straight up amazing. I don't really like the Sontaran 2 parter, the Dr's Daughter episode but you ignore those the rest of the series is top tier. Too many bangers to count and an all star finale to boot. Top tier. The Moffat Era I talk about in this video so yaknow- It's basically a totally different show. In my head I see it as a different show. You can compare them all I guess but the episodes between eras are so different, I see it more as something new. Series 5 is peak. 10/10. Series 6 is less conventional. Still great, an achievement. Series 7 is simultaneously MORE unconventional and also the most standard series so far. So figure out that oxymoron lol. Still good I feel. Series 8 and Series 9 are very inconsistent but when they hit its top tier, some of the best of the revival. Series 10 is back to basics but I feel they lose some of the unique voice that made S8 and 9 so special. Still VERY good though. Then Chibnall Era I've talked about before too but still- Again, I think it's a different show. It's kind of like in Star Trek you know you have TNG, DS9, Voyager etc. And I think its a breath of fresh air. I really connect with it. It doesn't have as much content which is sad, it has a handful of episodes (cough cough Legend of the Sea Devils) that I think are terrible but Genuinely Honestly speaking... I love it. I do, a lot of the episodes are really enjoyable even if low stakes and scale and... I mean I just don't think its that bad. I get it's different in style to the long-running Moffat era that preceded it but if you engage with it as something new, it's a fun little 30 episode ride. Series 11 is something I always wanted as a fan. No frills, no story arcs, no returning monsters, just fun adventures, Low key character arcs for all the companions. Emotional historical episodes rather than rollercoaster rides. It just hits for me, I like it. Series 12 is a step down. An attempt to imitate RTD does the show a disservice. Most of the episodes here are fun but like how S11 had Arachnids, S12 has its own 'bad' episode that gives people the impression the whole thing is bad. There are definitely hype moments that made me go crazy when it first aired but I was definitely disappointed at the visual downgrade, the lack of depth and the return to something familiar due to fan backlash. Also I don't rlly like TTC so no surprises there. Series 13 holds a place near and dear to my heart. It got me through the terrible 2021 and it is such a wonderful ride. I love that NuWho has a 6 part Sontaran Story. I love Dan, I love Village of Angels. Yeah the finale is weird but the rest is so good and I love watching it all in a one shot and I feel like due to the chaotic BTS this series deserves a little bit more lee-way than all the rest. Overall peak I feel. And then with RTD2, I like Series 14 and the Specials are decent. I think I've gotta agree with your assessment "yeah this is good but we need more of it." Please more than 8 episodes Russel!!
Moffat made the best doctor who arcs and era. Honestly RTD has alot of issues thay people tend to overlook. Capaldi is perfection. He is THE doctor. He combines classic who and new who flawlessly

It is nice to see how everyday people would react to being thrown on an hostile alien planet - former companions were less "normal" in their own way (Amy knowing about the Doctor since she was 8, Clara having fallen through time, etc)
I 100% Agree! It actually really is a lot of fun! I love Series 11, both for what it represents and because its genuinely just a chill, nice time

Finally, the UA-cam algorithm with a video tailor made for me
When the world needed him most, he returned.

@@yamcha65 Yeah those are some of my least favourite too😂 and thank you so much :D

You're spitting dude. Legitimately can't believe I saw a comment saying skip S8 & 9 cuz of Clara.
If the series 6 green coat was a lighter tweed like the series 7 one it would’ve been the one good thing in Closing Time.

DWGoat91 is back!!
Asprinke477 is back too my goat🫡
19:00 absolutely killed me
I loved Moffat Who but I abjectly hated Sherlock. But that's because I was a fan of the character way before I saw the show.
Great video, thank you so much!
I prefer RTD1. During Moffat Era the series arcs were very convoluted and I am not a fan of how Moffat writes a lot of women as his fantasies. His female characters often end up very predictible and boring. Also, he couldnt handle daleks or cybermen for most of his run. The sociopolitical commentary was also weaker while even less subtle than RTD's
fair enough
@@dwfan91- I realize my comment may sound quite harsh, so lemme add that Moffat Era has its moments. And even the flaws are somewhat interesting, the Era doesnt have lower quality than RTD1 because Moffat was a coward and tried to milk money but mostly because of his personal flaws and overambition, which is somewhat honourable
I have missed you

Kinda same. I don't really talk about it as much because I already know its good but I wanted an excuse to gush so this was it LOL

Hinchcliffe and Holmes though
I think for me (prepare for your yappery to be matched)
Series 1 is one of the most different and unique steps Doctor Who has ever taken.
Top tier.
The Moffat Era I talk about in this video so yaknow-
It's basically a totally different show.
Then Chibnall Era I've talked about before too but still-
Again, I think it's a different show.
