    lots of people worried about hitting airplane, from video i have seen max height about 2km comercial planes fly in 10km so good luck hitting something big.. separation is 600m so 600m out of ground should be nothing that is not landing at airport, 1200 and more are climbing altitudes which plane go to upon start in few minutes, hence no fly zone near airports for RC. if he knew where he was flying it was prety safe..

      If you fly in a rural location its pretty easy to avoid that problem. Idiots in the city who fly near airports are the ones causing issues.

      Most light aircraft in UK are between 1500 and 2500 ft, right where the more ambitious fly models...as I say, I have a big foot in both camps!!! And yes, full size aircraft have passed beneath my models... very embarrassing, being unable to move away quickly. FPV has even greater limitations for situational awareness, with restricted field of view.
      Gliders are found at or below cloud base height, usually.... so if that is your view on the screen, expect big white object to appear.
      Most air traffic happens between airports, when you think about it long enough...

      Flying anywhere around a major city will put you into controlled airspace….and airports….for instance in Pittsburgh you're limited to less than 700 ft.

Your batteries alone cost more than my entire plane hahahaha. I use Frsky too, although I'm only pulling about 300 yards before it goes into failsafe due to interference from 900mhz video signal. I'm going to switch it up to 1.2 or 5.8 and see if that helps. Thanks for posting all of your info you've gave me a good idea of what I can use that will be compatible!!!! I wont be pulling anything of this caliber in the near future, but you've inspired me for sure!!!! Great flight!!!

    So is FPV flying into planes as dangerous as driving a model RC car down the highway?
    And if the FPV flyer hits a plane, is it the same as a bird-strike?
    So can we ban birds too?

    • @ScottHiser77
      @ScottHiser77 10 років тому +8

      I've been flying RC for 23 years and I would never do this. I also fly real planes. It would be a lot worse than a bird strike, birds are soft, pieces and parts of a RC aircraft are not so soft like the motor or batteries, even worse if it's a nitro. While birds can fly very high, they generally do not and when they do, they are often in very remote areas. The closer people are to populated areas the higher the odds that flying high could be in a flight path. A bird strike would bust out a window or damage a prop. A damaged prop would then damage the engine and could result in an engine failure. While this is a cool technological accomplishment, it's irresponsible. Anybody who thinks being irresponsible is cool, go on up in a real small aircraft where you have more on the line than a FPV RC. You're also liable, if that RC hits, hurts, damages or kills somebody.

      not at all, they would want you all to own one, that way they have more spies in the sky to steal FPV from, if the government is smart they'll allow and make the FPV personal craft as wide spread as an IPhone, and then tell you to build more. That way law enforcement just turns on a decrypting receiver and has no need to own expensive craft, the public provided it for them, just like they use Cell phone gps data, and audio, ready made bugs bought by the public is the future. Making laws against them is both childish and futile, same as airplanes were banned from some cities when they were first built and used.

    • @SuperAviatar
      @SuperAviatar 10 років тому +3

      GreningerProductions I really, really want not to find a battery pack in my face at 100 mph.... never mind the politics. It's the FPV of my face being destroyed that worries me most.
      Ever flown behind a thin piece of 30 year old Perspex?
      Airplanes are still separated from cities... mostly.

      Consider a world with drone speed limits, drone tickets, and what I really disdain drone insurance, which of course you'll need if your personal drone should decide to go all HAL on someone's face. Just as cars, planes and helicopters have to adhere to operations rules inside of populated areas the same applies to drones. The FAA will come up with a licensing regimen, and personal drones will end up being linked to their operators via registrations, something like the tail number on an aircraft but RFID based more than likely.

    • @SuperAviatar
      @SuperAviatar 10 років тому

      GreningerProductions I would love a world without the FAA, CAA and other regulatory bodies.... I'm not sure about a world without rules of any kind.
      Kids teach themselves to drive on a public highway.... learn about firearms by pulling triggers. Accidental deaths are common, common sense is in short supply.
      Learn from the wise, and the stupid.... listen to the voice of the mistake, or read the memorial if you wish.
      DIY tools have killed more than 9/11, in a year.... but we do not even notice.
      If a couple of geese can dump an airliner in the Hudson, what will a battery pack do.....
      I stood next to a model flyer when his plastic helmet was punctured by a propeller spinner. He survived, with treatment. So we were justified in ensuring that Team Race pit crews wore head protection. We were not popular for insisting on this rule.
      Forethought trumps hindsight

    While I know lots of you think this is pretty darn cool and very easy to do with off the shelf parts, I have a larger concern. Flights like this have to be coordinated with any local air authority just for the safety perspective. WHEN the first UAV to Plane accident happens it will ground all of us all over the world. Not if. When. I'm not trying to be a dick about this. I want us to be safe and for those that love doing this to be able to do it without fear of ending up in jail, no matter what country you are in.

      Almost no single engine aircraft have windshields that can withstand the impact of a duck or goose. Their windshields are made of a single thin layer of polycarbonate. A foam FPV model such as yours with it's equipment and battery weighs at least as much as a duck, and probably as much as a goose. And bird strikes do kill pilots. Never say never. Use a spotter, and keep your FPV model in their sight (even if they use binoculars,) so they can alert you to airplanes in the vicinity. For long distance flights you can have someone drive you within sight of the model as it flies.

    As a private pilot that's scary. Your equipment is too small to see until it's too late. Also a fellow hobbyist and FPV pilot, it is cool to be able to do but I keep it under 400ft and in line of sight distance. Keep that up and you are going to kill someone in a general/commercial aviation aircraft some day. Use your head and be smart about were and how you fly before you ruin it for everyone.

    I am nervously waiting for the conflict between FPV / RPV and light aircraft.
    I have a foot in both camps, with 50 years of model flying and 40 years of light aircraft and glider experience.
    For a short time in the late 70's and early 80's I was an area officer with the old SMAE, now rebranded as the BMFA.
    During this time, I was writing as the South East Area PRO, and was slightly involved with the production of the Safety Code and Proficiency Scheme - my Examiner certificate was produced on an old fashioned spirit duplicator!
    My question - what will be the result of an FPV hitting my Cessna?
    Pilots are checked to ensure they are not psychologically inclined to fly into other aircraft.
    Can FPV operators be relied on to maintain separation?
    Having witnessed a near miss between the Red Arrows and a control line combat wing, on an RAF base, I reckon that the unlikely has to be anticipated
    Also included in my list of near misses was a rather large bird of prey, flown in a demonstration... up to an altitude of 2,500 ft when I met it.
    We have to share the sky, being in the same place at the same time does not work....
    Serious discussions are welcome, I expect to receive comments from all groups.
    Regards, Jim Lambert

    Good to have that technology and put it into good use, but let`s face it: it can be very dangerous for people in airplanes, so regulations must be followed. By The way, there are excellent Iphone/Android apps that track flights and can tell if there are airplanes flying in a given area - I have used it all the time in the DR, where regulations are non existent but the community is very careful to avoid being banned.

    I was wondering the very same thing, I mean this is rock solid the whole way. I know considering the landmarks below in what you can see that it may be low density RF congestion but once he is up there at an appreciable altitude there is really no telling what he is over flying. I still keep looking and pinching myself. I mean it is Video transmitted with the OSD overlay and that indicates that it is being recorded at the Ground station. It really is an epic feat by any measure. I also asked :-)

    I am putting together the APM into a long range Hex currently and I am amazed to see an upload of this length and quality. The visuals are very stimulating. I didn't see you putting on goggles as you brought the wing over to the airstrip and so would like to know whether you use goggles for the whole flight or a monitor to do the FPV. You are recording the FPV feed obviously. The RVOSD is excellent, Two battery voltages displayed perhaps? I'll use Minim with the APM and 3DR telemetry radios :-)

    Just to clear up all the misinformation that some internet know-it-alls are throwing around, there is no law in the US limiting RC aircraft altitude. RC aircraft are free to make use of all transitional and Class E airspaces. The only restriction of this is issued by the AMA and is not a law but a rule for AMA members, but according to AMA within 3 miles of an airport transitional airspace is off limits (under 400AGL) UNLESS YOU HAVE TOWER CLEARANCE AND CONTACT.

  • @GaryStofer
    @GaryStofer 11 років тому

    Sorry to be a buzz kill, but I'm also a private pilot who had to take evasive maneuvers at 1500-2000 feet on approach to landing at an unfamiliar airport because a UAV strayed into my flight path. Sure the airplanes are foam and not much more than a pound, I know, I have about 10 or so RC planes I fly regularly myself, but what you don't realize is the startling factor such a craft provokes in the pilot . Had I been in a faster airplane I probably overstressed the wings from the pull up.

  • @drklop
    @drklop 11 років тому

    Well said. Primary means of avoiding conflicting traffic is "See and avoid" (FAA rule written in FAR/AIM.) The person operating the RC aircraft can not adequately see other traffic through a video camera.
    It is simply wrong to operate an RC airplane beyond your own visual range as you are becoming a threat to the aircraft carrying real humans. In certain part of the world is might not be illegal, but at the very least, it's unethical.

  • @drklop
    @drklop 11 років тому

    The camera is looking forward. At his speed, most conflicting traffic will be coming from the sides or behind. Not to mention that the ability to identify traffic coming at you at 100 to 300 (and even higher) knots through a TV screen is simply inadequate. It's hard enough to spot airborne traffic directly with 20/20 vision (I'm a pilot), with a camera it's next to impossible. A pilot of a real aircraft on a collision coarse is not likely to spot the RC plane either, because it is so tiny.

    Good observation there, but I don't think he meant 80km up, but more like 80km distance travelled =) Most commercial airlines will travel at a altitude of about 12km and will encounter turbulent jet winds and freezing cold that would tear this plane apart. The altitude in this video seems to be at about 2-2.5 km as seen on the right side, assuming that is metric judging from the temperature being shown in celsius.

    Yes, that is what we need in the US - more robotic conformists like JB. Let's just sit down and take what the government dishes out to us, taking our liberties piece by piece until it's too late. Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq? Where? How many? Let's get walked over and spend 3 trillion on a war that went nowhere.
    Stand tall and take a chance. There has to be a space for this type of hobby. As a private pilot and an RC hobbyist, we have an opportunity to live side-by-side.

    For the ones who write before thinking he will not encounter any airliner and anything of that nature below 3000 meters... so no jet engines to worry about and with a chopper or other slower flyers it would be very hard to collide without either party noticing. However there are measures that can be taken when someone is flying on such altitudes, sensors and a system that evades collisions.

    Mr Aleuli, Pls refer to the FAA laws in regards to rc units and drones in your area. Generally, anything below 400 feet is considered safe for RC in areas not close to airports. Usually, it is best to consult a aerial chart for your area to avoid air traffic routes and no fly zones. For instance, I live near a airforce base and flying a rcplane above 400 feet will get my plane to show up on radar.

    ...Love my country, fear my govt. I should say...the "traditional" America should rule the world. Not the social cummunists that threaten our freedoms, pander to the uneducated for their votes and want more and more and more power, taxes, and liberalism. Ok...there we go. Liberalism fosters a culture that is dependent on the govt. Democrats want equality as a result, Republicans want equality as an opportunity. Period. Anyways, great video! Obama wants drones in U.S. Bush would never.

    Temperature shows how much heat is on the autopilot board, numeric compass value gives greater accuracy for heading, G-load indicator helps keeping the wing flex low enough so the solar cells are not destroyed, artificial horizon indicator is a must when you fly inside the clouds.
    And ground speed is one of the most useful readings here, you want to know if you can actually reach the target before batteries run out. And yes you can get an estimate of airspeed by comparing successive readings.

  • @Aleuli73
    @Aleuli73  11 років тому

    Yeah, sure!
    Who needs to know how much battery charge is left, how close the airplane is to the stall speed, how efficient is the airplane flying, where is heading, how far and where is the take off point and to target point, the actual altitude to distance ratio, so the airplane stays over the horizon and radio control is not lost, how much pure glide distance is left, the attitude indicator unit and thus the autopilot health... Maybe you don't need it to flight in circles around yourself.

    This is a foam airplane with 0.2mm width silicon solar cells, flying outside the United States and on class E airspace. Even on the United States the FAA AC-91-57 is an advisory for model aircraft, notice that it is not a law.
    So you yourself can choose to follow it or not. Me myself did this long range try out, and it was not illegal, neither was a threat to any of the local airplane small airplanes, so said the controller of the nearest local airfield which I was in contact with..

    This is incredible. I never would have imagined this being possible for the common public. Too cool. Are there any special steps you need to take with the FAA to avoid flight traffic. I'm just curious because of the notifications that need to be made for model rockets with lager than "E" size motors. I think it is great that you csn explore the world like this. Thanks for posting.

    You can see two white small lines at the center of the image.
    One of those indicate the direction of the pilot!
    Long distance models are motogliders and they use motor only for altitude gain.
    Servo movements also are minimal with gliders.
    Also the transmiter module is external with external directional antenna.
    Likewise the video transmitter. Pilot use his monitor gogles and pilot his model.
    The only really difficult thing, is to have money to spare for the equipment!

    What was transmitter that you used ? Lawmate transmitter 1000mw with lawmate rx ? Did you used dragonlink for RC signal ? If yes, with stock antenna both on plane and on transmitter ? Did you used antenna tracking, right ? what was antenna used on plane and at ground ? what was frequency ? My hobby is also FPV.. Thanks a lot

    You have your head up your ass if you think that you have visual range through a video feed. This is like looking through a straw, compared to a pilot with two eyes on a swiveling neck. This is not legal and the person operating this craft is purposely putting lives in danger. Irresponsible to say the least.

    I've noted a lot of concern about RC models hitting aircraft. There is an android app called "Plane Finder" which shows you any full-sized aircraft near you in real time. I believe its also available in IOS and as a free version. I downloaded it and it works beautifully (Melbourne, Australia). Also, well done! Great effort!

    His camera is point only forward and he is much slower than all the real aircraft. That means most of the traffic will be coming from behind or from the side. To safely avoid other traffic you need to be moving your head.
    Flying that drone at that altitude with only one forward facing camera for traffic avoidance and no transponder puts the lives of real pilots in danger.

    I see a lot of folks complaining about flying in these altitudes, so I thought I'd mention some tips as it can be done safely. I'm a full size pilot along with being an FPV pilot. I use a transponder locator along with charts for my areas squawk codes & it gives me the location of all planes close to me. They can be bought for around $500.00 US.

    Hill's achievement was astounding, because his plane, the "Spirit of Butts Farm", had to weigh less than 5 kg, fuel included, to meet the FAI definition of a model aircraft. He used conventional R/C with on board computer control, GPS navigation and satellite communication when in autopilot mode away from the take-off and landing areas.

    you obviously dont know anything about aviation.ATC is not looking for a response to its own echo but a reply from a transponder.Unless an rc plane is fitted with a transponder ATC will know nothing about it.During 9/11 the boeings had their transponders turned off....so i doubt the US air force will know anything about an rc plane.

    Impressive, I assume that was all autopilot based flight with assorted weigh points ? The plane seemed to have an approximate 1 second oscillation in yaw as it was on straight and level flight. Is the gyro controlling yaw in the short period and GPS or on board magnetometers handling the longer period course heading ?

Airplane is a Queen Bee from winrider, solar cells are bought from Ebay(3X6 grade "A"), Solar cell charge regulator from Genasun. The electric motor is NTM from Hobbyking, propeller is 14X7 APC, ESC is 100A Hobbywing...

    I was thinking the same think. With a forward facing camera you cannot avoid any aircraft approach from a blind area, and in any case, you wouldn't have the speed to do so. An airliner might survive an engine out, but a chopper would be in real trouble. I take it this flight was not in controlled airspace?

  • @Aleuli73
    @Aleuli73  11 років тому

    Flight was on "fly by wire" mode. Computer handle corrections, but attitude is set by direct manual control. The airplane is a flying wing, so roll corrections do cause undesired yaw. This is increased by the fact that the center of gravity its set a little behind, to help reducing drag, by not using washout.

    Thanks!

    The app only show aircraft on instrument flight plan. Although 99% of the airliners fly on the instrument flight plan, most of the general aviation traffic flies VFR (visual flight rules) which is not shown by the app. I would estimate the app shown only about 5 -10% of all traffic.

    It's a hazard for real aircraft with real humans on board, you can only fly RC airplanes within your own visual range to ensure your toy will not get ingested into a jet engine or penetrate a windshield (typically made of a thin plexiglass) knocking a pilot out.

    Throughout your flight, do you remain in Zonas Prohibidas MDP-7? I thought you ventured into Class D airspace... If you do stay in the MDP-7 area, it would do the FPV cause some good by stating that fact on your description. Otherwise it looks a bit irresponsible to fly beyond LOS. Just saying...!
