This was the 2nd Indy 500 I attended; my 1st was back in 1960 when Rathmann beat Ward in a thriller; they exchanged the lead at least a dozen times the last 100 laps. My regret...I shouldn't have waited 54 years!

Truly one of the greatest races. The weather was absolutely perfect that day....79 degrees and brilliant sunshine.I had forgot Townsend Bell was involved in the re-start crash with Hinchcliffe and Carpenter. That's why I watch these races over and over.

@@NotSteveCook Well and also once you drive a legend car or cup car you will have no problem driving a F1 or Indy car. A stock car and legend car you live your entire race loose with the back end coming around. So getting into a car with downforce that was actually built from the ground up to go fast it’s a lot easier. Now people that have never raced dirt, asphalt, off-road they will make stuff up and say stuff but they’ve never raced before. Now take a modern F1 or Indy drivers and put them in a stock car they always do terrible because they are not use to just how loose and difficult it is to control a cup car. If you notice the most successful cup drivers have a long history with dirt racing. Dale Earnhardt, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, tony Stewart. Where dale jr. had no dirt experience and he got killed just like Danica. Juan Pablo Montoya said In an interview. For all the Indy and f1 drivers making fun of my nascar failure just know this “driving a cup car when it’s perfect and ready to win the car feels like a f1 or Indy car that’s about to crash when your heart is in your throat. But for a stock car that’s the exact feeling you want every single lap” now any human can learn it and do it. I’ve raced winged sprint, legend, stock, trophy trucks, dirt asphalt off-road and you can do it and I refuse to believe anybody can’t do it unless you have a disability. It’s a matter of want. The problem is f1 and Indy cars are extremely fun because they do everything you ask where a stock car you are pissed off 99% of the time because the car isn’t doing anything you want. You have guys that drive in circles mad and then some of us drive around figuring out how to win and figure out what the car is actually good at. Because all of the cars are different with 1950 technology. Anybody can learn it but you really want dirt experience because they are so loose on pavement you have to steer with the gas and brake. The steering wheel only works the first 5-10laps then it won’t turn without the gas and brake.

Vince Welch, we could have all done without your dandy poetics and metaphors concerning the "Yard of Bricks" start/finish line at Indy at around 3:27. So, for those who'd rather bypass that flowery drivel, let me tell you that the Indy Motor Speedway was built in 1909 under the supervision of Carl Graham Fisher (1874-1938) and was originally paved with a substance known as taroid (a tar and oil mix) and crushed stone. However, the bits of stone came loose and chuckholes had been formed during the first auto races held at the track causing fatal accidents. So Mr. Fisher decided to use an all-brick surface on his track. Later, to increase racing speeds, much of that brick surface was covered with asphalt, and by 1961, the entire speedway was paved over with asphalt save a one yard wide length of uncovered bricks at the start/finish line--the "Brickyard." ("Save", in this context, means "except for.")

Ed Carpenter should grab a brain, he got pushed down onto Hinchcliffe who quite frankly had the lower position solidly made! Carpenter's spotter was so worried about Bell he failed to see Hinchcliffe move in underneath. Bell bumps tires with Carpenter and forces him into Hinchcliffe!
