Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown Review

- Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown reviewed by Luke Reilly on PC. Also available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
"Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is far and away the most ambitious driving game that developer KT Racing has ever put together, but it’s plagued with problems. Forced online requirements that feel needlessly punitive towards solo players, inconsistent and non-adjustable AI difficulty levels, a stale car list, and chore-like progression all conspire to undermine an otherwise robust driving model and eye-catching open world. The former home of the WRC series has come out swinging with Solar Crown, but unfortunately the studio may have flown a little too close to the sun."

Not every racing game needs to be always online 😭 actually no racing game should be
In fact Ubisoft learned from that mistake, so yk things got real fast
No way they made it always online... 💀🤮
100% not sure why these big studios still want to take this route, absolute revenue loss or failures
Aside from most MMOs no game needs to be online only
They are actually going to add an offline mode
all we need is midnight club and life will be alright
I've been replaying Midnight Club LA, and it's crazy how far ahead it is to almost all recent arcade racing games.
Rockstar is just a different breed.
Facts
Gta online
Thank you, preach
Midnight club 2 remaster 🤝
This game is actively trying to waste and disrespect your time.
Who made these design decisions?
Bunch of people who never played a game in their life clearly. How else can you explain such a pos game.
Seems like an executive decision tbh
CCP
Nope. Game itself is fun and joyable
@@polcompanystrilla5825 but that is only your opinion and not fact
KT Racing fumbled this IP so hard. They had an existing fanbase. All they had to do was make TDU2 but modernised. Even if the map is smaller but keep the same features and ideas.
Literally all they had to do was keep everything (even the map) TDU2 had and update the car list and have better driving physics.
Instead they chose to try and twist their WRC racing game engine into an open world game.
Literally all they had to do was do a remaster of tdu2 with slightly revamped physics, add all the dlc cars in and quality of life changes to bring the money in for a more ambitious tdu3 project
Exactly!!
reminds me of Saints Row. lost the soul of the IP and it flopped.
This the second time they did this. They fumbled the V rally franchise also
My experience:
- Bought it
- Played it
- Refunded it
Lmao
You made 2 mistakes then rectified.
@@DoctorRevershe will learn from his mistakes, if he preordered this he made 3 mistakes..
You Test Drived the game 😂
Daaang..
Not nearly as close to what Test drive unlimited 2 was. No houses, dealerships are bland and boring,
No clothing stores, everything was shrinked into a hotel.
Just another generic racing game.
there are dealerships actually
@@lareka11 he said dealerships are bland and boring specifically.
@@Kylfahn true yeah
Yeah it's not great, they are adding houses but or really don't know why this wasn't a launch, this is literally core tdu dna
They already said it's coming :) Patience to get the full experience
Game developers must really think we’re all stupid and will buy anything. We want more single player games… at the very least, almost every game should include an offline single player campaign.
Borza and Crapfest do and it clearly shows bc yall still going for it 😂😂
Yes, yes they do. It's because people spend money on things like microtransactions, battle passes, season passes etc. that games keep coming out like this. Monopoly go makes billions yearly in MTX. Casuals and plebes destroyed gaming.
You mean investors and executives
Game devs have no opinion in the industry anymore
I’ve been disappointed by every single game, I’ve been hyped for. Why can’t they make good games anymore.
Let's hope GTA VI does justice to its hype.
Just wait for a year after launch and play it on a discount, that way you have the best version of the game for cheap and have a good time
@@hawken796 The Crew 2 is like $1 now on Steam.
Preach man. This one was important to me. Loved TDU1. But this,. Ah man.. sigh
theres good games coming out every month. broaden your horizons.
No single player, won't be buying then.
Same
+1

Exactly my thoughts
Don’t care me
5/10 rating is IMO still very generous.
This is the IGN equivalent of a 2/10
Right! that was my thought exactly
A 5 from IGN is considered mediocre according to their website.
naw a 5 from IGN is a 2 or 3 at best. thats bad. they usually rate every average game at a 7. but this gettin a 5 says alot.
no one can still beat the rain effects used in Drive Club even with these next gen consoles and ray tracing effects : a game 10 freaking YEARS AGO
Um, you not seen assetto corsa mods?
@@petebagwell6666we talking base game not mods asserto corsa is an amazing game when it's modded
Ride 5 clears it
Project Gotham 4 is better with everything and still unmatched
Heck PGR 4- FROM 2007- grinds THIS!
This game on ps5 is even worse, the graphics are very blurry and the frame rate is terrible.
Should get a pro when it comes out then 😂
@@lee47123😂
Cyberpunk worse or normal worse
@@lee47123lol imagine getting a Pro for this trash
@@lee47123Who'd buy a pro for this trash? 😂
No offline mode, throw it in the trash.
Then go play Fallout 4.
If its always online - they should not charge money and make it free.
@@danifit24 Exactly because you don't own the game. If this game starts hemorrhaging players which is looking likely it may not exist a year from now.
They gave it 5 out of 10
Too much driving.
They were considerate.
Trilogy Moment
@@TheWriterNW Yeah we don't pull that sort of crap with Luke Reilly, dude knows his car games and is passionate about them. Save it for the rest of IGN's reviewers if you wanna meme it up, Luke doesn't deserve it lol.
@@Hybridizm My bad.
And kt studios spent 5+ years to develop this?!
Since the PS4 / Xbox One generation not development of AAA games got harder, but the developers got lazier...
It’s what happens when you hire primarily Gen Z staff who never actually bother to learn what they go to school for.
what a let down
@@DuGanTaDa Unlimited Dissapointment
@@davidsentanu7836unlimited online mode
online only, none of the series staples such as houses and clothing, dead looking city, bad performance, what else to say?
Two minutes Silence for those who said this will destroy The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest😂
This game doesn't deserve those 2 minutes, come on!
Well. If it was a real Test Drive Unlimited with all its unique selling points, it would have had the potential to dethrone The Crew and Horizon. But unfortunately it was clear very early on that they were heavily dumbing down the TDU formula.
"Guys its an old build this beta, none of these problems will be in the final game!!!! Ur just a hater!!" 😂😂😂😂
Ohh I'm here for this lame ass review and ur lame ass comment 😂😂😂

You’d never see Hong Kong with so few cars on the road lol
@@jksanrio And no people. No life. Hong Kong is one of the absolute densest and active city in the world.
Why on Earth they chose Hong Kong for their first open world car game, only to make it so empty.
@@davidsentanu7836 yea totally agree. Great location, but the emptiness makes it a huge negative
13 years for this...To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.
Glad to see a really good Review! You were completely honest in this Review and we all could tell about your frustration! It’s a shame what this series has turned into!
Outdated graphics, terrible performance, and a dead-looking world.
Did they really think this game would succeed?
Nostalgia
The upcoming updates look promising, let’s see if they can revive the game in the next 6 months, but there’s still a lot of work to be done to make it a real Test Drive Game
When did the industry shift to releasing unfinished games and promising updates
Maybe I’ll get it then… when it’s cheaper than the monthly subscription needed to play it 🤪
@@DriftCARZZZ 5-10 years ago
Give it 2 years at the very least
@@DriftCARZZZ When the cost to produce games raised by a lot. Graphics, charges, everything went up by... a lot.

Garbo game so don't mind it tbh.
Everyone forgets about that one and thats fine
Maybe bro wanted to forget
Requires online for single player? No thanks. I’ll skip this game unfortunately (which sucks cuz I’d love to play it)
After years and years of gaming why is it developer's have been getting it so wrong recently???
Like really silly simple mistakes
Online does not work! Offline always works....add some bug patches just incase
We need a remaster of Driveclub.
Gotta resurrect the studio first.
that game still has the best weather effects 10 years later
And bring it to PC

Entire industry needs restructuring many came just to make a quick buck and in the end only the developers suffer for it...
There have always been good and bad games in a year Mr. Recency Bias.
@@toshtao1 true but my points are valid...
It's only AA game, and most of the bad reviews are from when the servers were fubar - which they haven't been since the first 2-3 days of early access.
Piss people off apparently
This is the best review I've seen of this game, and it's from IGN! He hit absolutely all the points that's been frustrating me while playing this game. Every single one. Who is this reviewer!?
Luke Reilly. He does every racing game for IGN. He knows his stuff.
Luke hasn't disappointed me in any review yet. ++
@@VixenTM They should add his name to the title of the review, like: "Luke reviews Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown."
@@MetalGamer666 Would definitely make me click on that vid
Another game that might get good after two years of updates and player feedbacks, by that time we all moved on
Leave it to Luke to give us a good well elaborated review of a highly anticipated racing game.
The main issue is that this game was released WAY too early. It HAD to be the publishers decision to release the game like this, not the developers, especially considering the fact that the developers have been on strike.
Yes, they needed funding to continue work on the game, they had no choice
Sounds like junk
always online is a disaster
Let's all agree, this game is a obvious cash grab
Test drive limited server connection
Online ONLY - Instant NO buy
YOU ALL WILL START TO REALIZE SOON THAT THESE PEOPLE DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR FUN AS GAMERS ANYMORE THEY CARE ABOUT THE MONEY ONLY NOW! THE PASSIONATE CREATORS THAT PUT THE GAMERS FIRST ARE ALL GONE AT THIS POINT!
Say no to always online, say no to DRM.
I’m sorry, but what is DRM?
How did this get a 5? This should have been anywhere between 1-3
The fact that the same mistakes keep being made over and over again with these games is wild to me.
No offline mode, no buy. They really looked at what PD did with the progression in GT7 and said we can do worse.
❌️I had saved up to buy this and a Series X but now, I'll get a Swiitch TwU.
In blue.
Switch TwU 😂
A conglomeration of Switch, Wii and a play on Wii U with the spelling of 'two'.
We need a new midnightclub more than ever, the time is now. the competition is so bleek
carx street
For sim racing, I'd recommend sticking with the older, modded titles like Assetto Corsa and BeamNG. If you want a demolition derby experience, Wreckfest is a great option.
For drifting, CarX Drift Racing or the newer CarX Street are good choices, but keep in mind the importance of proper car setups in CarX Street. You also have JDM rise of the scorpion and overdrift festival.
For a more sim-focused experience, look at Assetto Corsa Competizione, Automobilista 2, iRacing or RF2
For rally play Dirt rally, WRC or modded Ricard burns rally.
Forza Horizon 5 and The Crew: Motorfest can also be a lot of fun, especially when played with a wheel. However, it's worth noting that many of these games, like Assetto Corsa, have a much better experience on PC due to the ability to mod them, compared to their console version.
Rockstar will never make that game and even if they did it will be filled with microtransactions
tbf i've put off playing The Crew Motorfest for almost a year and only recently got into it. That game actually kinda bangs - with an offline mode coming soon and a whole second island as a free update things are looking really damn good
Yeah, at least we need to respond Rockstar Games for developing Midnight Club
1 word - FAIL
Let's spend many years and millions and millions of dollars to make a game we already know is going to flop because the community has literally told us what not to do :D management should be fired.
Forced online is what need for speed did few years back and it was absolutely aweful and why you could get the game for 20$ few months after it was out
How did they manage to make Hong Kong - one of the busiest cities in the world - look absolutely dead?
"Atrocious" would not be an outlandish assessment. Didn't Nacon see all the online only drama from earlier this year?
Clone this reviewer now so all IGN reviews can be with him
This game was definitely a tax write off
You don't understand what that means
If only Rockstar would bring Midnight Club back
No solo no buy.
Anyone else not receiving the gold edition content????😢
"Thanks for the $$$$$, sucka" - Kylotonn CEO
Its really great to see more and more people pushing back against always online.
We said that since the beginning. KT and some "influencers, youtubers" prefer to not listen saying that "ohh but we got support the game, no criticize, pls" ... So, we get there. Solar Failure. Not buying, not recommending, its a shame in TDU history. Hope that they fired those who made this an online only focused on "social" bs because its about TEST DRIVE and not, TEST SOCIAL.
R35 GTR tail lights look stretched out. they're not that oval.
They as well for some strange reason used the 2009 gtr model instead of the 2017 or 2022 model
For the very specific details you mentioned, this sounds like a horrendous game. Mind boggling development decisions.
This is genuinely the worst racing game,, felt like some nft project than an actual game.
Games like this shouldn't be allowed to publish
6 years to make thiS. What were they thinking 🤦♂️ I think there was a lot of late starts and early finishes.
Played the demo. Online, offline, doesn't matter, the game is so mid I'll spend my time on other things.
Really good review. You explained the always online problem very well.
"Turn that crown upside down" is an insane title card xD
What an absolute joke this game is. Was waiting for this for about 2 years!!
14:43 Score Rating
no need to comment ign time stamps it
So Forza is still the goto racing game even after years
You gotta hate it when you get kicked out many many many MANY times in Online Mode. No racing SHOULD EVER BE only Online.
what a way to go with the test drive franchise, a 5/10 is all it gets unfortunately.
Crazy how developers have devolved this once unique and forward thinking racing franchise
TDU2 is better and that was made 10+ years ago… how have they got this so wrong
Different team and devs
Old team and devs went bankrupt
My only issue with the game is the ai opponents. They are extremely aggressive literally T-boning me at the start of the race. You can also be the fastest car and yet the AI is on your ass or pass you if you hit anything slightly.
Agreed. Once you get in front hug the inside of the corner and brake a bit more so they hit your rear instead of t-boning your sides.
The AI on expert mode: 🗿
The best player in world: 💩
1st!!! These other 2 comments don't count!! They BOTS 😂😂😂😂😂 YAAHHH
I'm also a Bot! 😂
Huh. A decent review from IGN? Might have more to do with the reviewer actually knowing his stuff. Maybe IGN itself should take notes.
13:37 says how they love the gates at parking places…. smashes straight through them 😂😂😂😂
Can't play offline = NOT BUYING IT 🚫
When are companies going to realise that a lot of us play solo offline?.....
They can keep it.......
We need rockstar back for a new midnight club, they the only devs who deliver.
This is the best and most accurate review I've seen yet
ruined the TDU series.
We need a Need for Speed Underground 2 Remaster but not just graphical, extra content, customisations.
@ign This was a kind review. My short version review and highlight version truly exposes this game.
All these years waiting for the next Test Drive Unlimited, for naught.
Solar crowns soul is missing
Empty shell of what once had our hearts
Its sad to see.
Always online is a dealbreaker for me.. I’ll wait for offline patch before buy!
What a mess.
Devs were clearly lying out their arse...
lmao at the AI being ten seconds faster than the fastest human player. that is absolutely ludicrous
Our arcade racing game god Ridge Racer needs to be back.
O lord, Pls save the racing game fandom!
this online-only game should be a Freemium instead of $50
You guys remember Test Drive Le Mans for the Dreamcast? Good times.
For those looking, they gave it a 5.
what The Crew at home looks like
So many other games failed with always online yet the Devs/publisher thought they would be the ones who can make it...
If they want to mimic a, imo, good online racing game they should do what Playground Games did with Forza Horizon where the Freeroam has an online mode with some fun events but could also be played offline
Most accurate IGN review of the last 5 years
Even need for speed most wanted 2005 has better graphics
This one wasn’t ready for release, it is good game that should be in production at least additional year
Why didn’t they just make a better tdu 2?? I mean that game was so good
Online only again, nobody is going to be playing it in a couple of months time.
Has there been an online only racing game that sold well? It seems more like a niche genre now rather than something anyone can just pick up
