    This video shows the process for replacing a Jeep Cherokee instrument cluster / gauge cluster and correcting the mileage.
    This process can also be used for upgrading from the idiot light cluster to the full gauges. This procedure applies to all 1997-2001 Jeep Cherokees (XJ).
    This procedure should also apply to 1997-2001 Jeep TJ Wranglers.
    This WILL NOT work for
    1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ
    2002-2007 Jeep Liberty KJ
    2002-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ
    This procedure may work for 2007+ Jeep Wrangler JK.

    Just updated an idiot lite Jeep to full gauges, and kept the original miles. the hardest part was downloading software for the programmer. thanks for the inspiration.

      did this work for you ?
      i dont want to risk messing up my newer cluster that i bought. i found one with almost the same amount of miles, but the new one says 6k less than my original and i would like for it to be correct (i will never sell this jeep that i built, just want it to be correct)
      i had a broken gauge cluster that just had dummy lights and switched it out for a non-broken gauge cluster with all of the little gauges.

Oh and by the way I could hear you very clearly, Im not sure why other comments say you can’t be heard! I had no problem listening! So, what all exactly did you use for programming it, and where did you source it all? Is there a kit? I've found some parts online, like the SOIC-8 connector and the TL866 module, but what about the adaptor? And what program did you use, and where can I find it?
    It's a good video but my main complaint is the lack of consideration for people (like me) who don't know anything about programming. To someone who already knows what all of this is, this video would be a nice guide. To someone who doesn't know how to program (For example, pretty much anyone who wants to swap a gauge cluster in an XJ) it's a little confusing. Can I manually type in the mileage without needing to extract that data from the old cluster? If so, how do I do that with only 4 digits? Can I manually enter a VIN? Is the program you used even still available? Do I need an account/ membership to use it? What kinds of other programs might I be able to use instead?
    Thanks for this though, I was getting nowhere until I found this video.

    hands down best video I have found on youtube showing how to do without soldering... THANK YOU! 2 questions... 1-if you cant copy/clone and replace info, how can you actually TYPE in the correct miles onto the good cluster/ eprom…(plus it might be quicker that way, just having to get the clip attached to one eprom?). 2- I saw the stuff you were using and looked them up, the computer program however,, what is it? where do you get it? cost? thanks again for a very well thought out informative video!

    • @IcarusOffroad
      @IcarusOffroad  5 років тому

      You can change the values and then upload. The eeprom file is a hex file that can be edited with any hex editor, you can replace the values with whatever they need to be to match the vehicle. If for some reason the cluster could not be read but the mileage was still known, such as reading the odometer value stored in the PCM, the cluster can be programmed to that value, within a few dozen miles or so.
      The eeprom doesn't get written for the last few digits and they seem to be stored in some sort of flash memory, so only the higher digits are stored, meaning you wont get exactly the miles you want to program, but can get pretty close.

    Hey, Nicely done. Tho I don't need this for mine. My issue is the dash lights for thee instrument panel are not working. Have to change the bulbs I suppose first. I could not find anyone doing this replacement for the "1995" Jeep Cherokee Sport SUV. Reminds me of my 91 Toyota 4 Runner where nobody shared how to replace the Rear Window Relay Switch-Box, which was located in the rear driver's-side 1/4 panel.
    When I checked with Auto Repair places, they all said "It's an Auto-Electrical issue, take it to them." So I asked them and guess how much to replace it?
    Just under...... (are you sitting down?) 600$ labor and 575$ for the part. Which pissed me off. So what did I do?
    I did like I always to...
    I searched world wide to find a used replacement... which I did for (Drum roll please....... 45$, yes, forty-fibe dollars) 1st savings = over 500$.
    Secondly, labor time.. what to do? Now mind you, my rear widow was LOCKED or FROZEN UP, because the relay was dead. This made the challenge to get AT IT TO REPLACE even more of a challenge. But would I be defeated or intimidated?
    HELL NO... that's not how "I" work. I'm the non-typical CAN DO guy. I ALWAYS CAN... even if I've never done so before. I WILL figure it out, and this particular time, at over a GRAND to replace it, it was worthy of my greatest efforts. Had NO CLUE what I was getting myself into, but I'M GOING FOR IT!... You WON;T BELIEVE THEE END RESULT.... but here we go...
    I lowered my back seats to lying down. Put in some cardboard to put everything including myself onto. Loaded in my tools that I thought I might need, took a huge breath and set myself into GIT ERR DUNNNN MODE... climbed in and .....
    I figured out HOW TO DO IT. Even with the rear window LOCKED IN UP POSITION or CLOSED.
    Once I was able to locate the little bugger or culprit, I was ECSTATIC! I replaced it as fast as I could... anxious to see my window working again. (I'm like a little kid that way... excited to take up such challenges and WIN or SOLVE them! Woooo whoooo!!!) Sorry for that outburst. Back to the story...
    After locating it and replacing it, it was time to see if it worked. A bit nervous now because hey, I got a 600$ part for 45$... what are the chances of this working out REALLY? Was I being scammed? Why sell this damn thing if it was working right? Well, let's face the music and see if it works.
    Got in the driver's seat, put the key in thee ignition... heart starting to race... a small prayer came without thought, (Please God... please let this work.) Looking into the rear view mirror... the momement of truth. Turned the key.... the motor fired right up and idling... time to try the back window.... welp.... here goes nothing.... pressed the button to lower the rear window and. . . . . .
    The SWEETEST SOUND.... that ZHHHHHHHHHHHH sounds that power-windows make when they are going down or up. I watched in my rear view mirror as the back window... after over a year of not working... smoothly rolled right down to the wide open position. WOOOOOOOOOOO WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH MAN!!!!! Talke about ELATED1 I JUMPED out of the seat and landed on the ground and jumped around, like a Zulu Warrior who'd just won a huge battle and was celebrating his victory! SWEET SUCCESS... I KNEW I COULD DO THIS!!!
    ahahah... I went to the back... put the key in to see if it worked there as well. It did! Yay!!!
    Jumped back into the driver's seat... tried it several times up and down... not a blip. AWESOME!!!
    OMG I was SO HAPPY and wondered... "Why in thee hell didn't I get this done a LONG time ago?" Well, that was because of thee expences I was told I'd have in getting it done--- and... when it came to Auto Electrical, I wasn't kidding myself about it... I'm NO SAVVY with it AT ALL." But I DID THIS... I GOT IT DONE!!! Yahoo!
    Now then! Can you imagine how LONG this took me to do? To find it, to replace it, and to put it all back together again afterward?
    Are you ready for this?.... You might want to sit down again... cause here we go...
    Now remember how much I told you thee Auto-Electrical shops quoted me for Labor to switch it out? $600.00 labor only! They didn't say how many hours, but if it were 100$ per-hour it would have been 6 hours... right? Well, guess what?...
    It took me, (being 100% a novice to this task) a total time of UNDER 1 (one) hour to Find, Remove, Replace, Test, and put it all back together.
    TAH DAH!!!
    Now to figure out the Dash Lights on my 95 Jeep Cherokee Sport... since NOBODY'S SHARING HOW TO DO THIS... IT SHALL BE... ONCE AGAIN.... ALL ME, MYSELF and I. Time to GIT ERRR DUNNNNNN!!!!!!! Heeyawwwwwwwwwww!!!
    Ciao everyone, and DON'T BE AFRAID to try and save yourself some money and GIT ERR DUNNN yourselves!!!! It's VERY REWARDING when you do... and if nothing else, you learn to REMOVE thee INTIMIDATION FACTOR because YOU CAN! :--))
    Ciao!

    I got really excited when I found your video, but I don’t want a clone. I want a complete reset. I spent a few years rebuilding my jeep from front to back. FYI the latest TL866A/CS firmware will "brick" your programmer if it is a copied clone of the "mini pro."
    Some on the forums have said it bricked their original even. Evidently the manufacturer has a warning on it's website and shows the difference between both clone vs original.
    They discontinued the old version and the Newest is the XGecu T56 Universal and TL866II Plus high speed models.

      @racheldillemuth7584 ,
      it has to do with "firmware" that is downloaded onto your computer, then loaded onto the "mini pro" device.
      All logic chips are "programed" this way to facilitate updates. It beats having a chip "burned" with a program and become "hardware bound" and useless when it becomes outdated.

    It is my understanding that 97 98 clusters are not compatible with 99 00 and 01 because the gas light was replaced with the hatch open light therefore the pin outs and wiring is different. I tried everything from unplugging the battery and leaving it overnight, to pressing and holding the button while turning the key over etc etc. Ultimately what fixed my issue was buying a replacement dash cluster off of ebay (used for $40) and replacing the old dash cluster. It now works without "error" but retained the original mileage from the vehicle it was pulled from.

    • @IcarusOffroad
      @IcarusOffroad  6 років тому

      2002 - 2006 TJ Wrangler Gauge Cluster uses a Motorola 68HC12 processor which has a built in eeprom which stores the mileage, VIN and other information. To read the program code or mileage information the CPU must be put into background debug mode, BDM. From BDM you can read and write specific memory registers which contains mileage and VIN. Goodluck, I have not yet figured out what I need to reprogram the mileage and VIN on these clusters. I have a specific tool that performs the function for the TJ Wrangler, but I have not been able to get generic tools to read the eeprom.

    • @sidewaysstarion
      @sidewaysstarion 6 років тому

      I just read that twice and I still don't know what you're talking about. The mileage in the PCM has no bearing on the mileage in the cluster. Also the JTEC pcms (2002-2004) don't support BDM and the NGC controllers used in 2005/2006 also don't support BDM. So I don't understand what you're talking about.
      As for setting mileage and VIN in the PCM, it's a trivial task that can be done with a DRB 3 over the OBDII port, no need for any sort of "background debugging mode."

    • @IcarusOffroad
      @IcarusOffroad  6 років тому +1

      I think I can clarify a bit. What I am referring to with background debug mode, or BDM, is for the programming of the 2002+ TJ clusters to correct the mileage and VIN when the cluster has been replaced. To reprogram the mileage and VIN in the cluster the cluster must be removed from the vehicle, and the rear plastic cover removed, and then the BDM pad on the circuit board can be accessed. Then the mileage in the cluster can be reprogrammed with with a DigiProg3 or other tool that can read specific memory register in the Motorola/Freescale/NXP HC12 processor through the BDM port. This is similar, but not the same, to programming through the BDM port on a Bosch ECU.
      I am not referring to programming anything in the ECU for the 2002+ TJ.
      I need to get a video filmed and uploaded for the VIN programming in the cluster for the the 02+ TJ using a DigiProg.

    Are you able to program a cluster for a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

    • @IcarusOffroad

      I have not tried but my equipment should support it. Email at my email in my profile.

    How would this be done for a 95 XJ cluster?

    • @IcarusOffroad
      @IcarusOffroad  5 років тому +1

      NBHRaven the 96 and older XJs use a mechanical speedometer. To adjust this mileage you need to physically adjust the odometer. Generally they are designed to make this hard to prevent tampering. There is nothing you can reprogram to set the mileage in the older Cherokees.

      Self* check sorry lol

    • @IcarusOffroad
      @IcarusOffroad  5 років тому

      Ah, there is no self check available on the older clusters. The older clusters are more mechanical, the newer cluster with digital odometer actually has a microprocessor in it that drives all the gauges.

    What program did you use to copy the files from one chip to the other?

    • @IcarusOffroad
      @IcarusOffroad  4 роки тому +1

      Clayton Boliski it was just the program my chip programmer came with. If you buy one it should come with software.

    Can you rewrite the milage, I just put a new engine in mine and want it to reflect the correct miles

    • @IcarusOffroad
      @IcarusOffroad  5 років тому +3

      In the United States this would be consistent with odometer fraud, while it is acceptable to replace the cluster and program the correct mileage for the vehicle it is illegal to roll back the odometer to zero. Most people would also point out that even a "rebuilt" engine isn't the same as factory new, and that all the other million small components on your Jeep are not new. There are certain legal and potential ethical/moral ramifications to resetting the cluster to zero so that I cannot recommend you to reset it.

      @@IcarusOffroad WRONG! All you have to do is check the block on the title that says "not the original mileage" and you can have a vehicle with ZERO miles when you replace the engine. Why do so many on youtube make this mistake?

    • @highwayxj9397
      @highwayxj9397 3 роки тому

      @al hardy, the engine is only one part of your drivetrain. Your transmission still has all the mileage on it

    Do you have any suggestions for 2004 jeep grand cherokee laredo?

    • @IcarusOffroad

      Sophia Omatsone this same method will not work for the grand Cherokee WJ. A Digiprog can be used with the WJ Grand Cherokee cluster.

      @@IcarusOffroad is the chip the same/similar in the 2004 wj. Is the process the same and is it affected by the instrument cluster not working? Can I just desolder and transfer the chip?

    • @IcarusOffroad
      @IcarusOffroad  4 роки тому

      Sophia Omatsone I think the chip is the same between the TJ and the WJ. It may be the same between similar year of clusters. Desoldering the PRocessor May work, but it’s very fine solder work to do. It’s not a large eeprom, it’s a fine microprocessor.
