"I took paleontology, I learned so many not-good things about the ocean." As a paleontologist, YES!!!! :D I've often said that the worst monsters in horror films a wusses compared to what we know for a fact existed in the past. From mind-controlling parasites to sharks with freaking circular saw blades in their mouths to monsters the size of buildings that evolved to sneak up on you to things we still can't figure out--the oceans are freaking HORRIFIC. And that's why I love this science! I get to study monsters for a living!
Okay so I know you guys are generally pretty good about this, but seriously, don't spoil any of this for Keith, this is a brilliant game to explore blind, and it's generally pretty good about telling you what to do and where to go. The only obstacle to overcome is your own, justified, fear of going deeper.
Not gonna lie, i was rooting for subnautica since the moment you said you have a fear of the ocean. No, not because i want so see you suffer, but i think having a general respect for the ocean is the perfect attitude for this game and should provide some very interesting moments ;) I usually hate survival crafting games because usually they are very generic, very thoughtless, and kind of not fun because the "game" is lacking, but this one is very different. - The survival aspects are scaled back and you can survive very easily. This is not a game where you have to meter rush from one second to the next until you finally get sick of it because that is all you are doing. Explore as much as you want and play the game on your own pace. - The crafting is very streamlined and obvious. Not this cryptic bullshit where you have to read up wiki pages to know you can actually do something. And usually you don't need to grind, simply exploring and collecting everything you find should be enough. - You have a clear progression system. - You have an actually story you can follow that may be simple, but is very satisfying. And with that you have a clear goal you can work toward and don't just wander aimlessly in the world. So yeah, i am very excited for this series. And since it won again over juggernaut options like god of war and spiderman (which was surprisingly low count) i am not the only one who thinks that way ;) Oh and the guy who suggested anachronox gets a big thumbs up from me, one of the best JRPG style games i know of. Fantastic writing and humor, one of the best and most bizarre party member in all of rpg history, but overall so incredible niche that no one knows about it anymore. Good try, but this game will sadly never win or get even close to the recognition it deserved :(
For all the discomfort you go through in this game, this has somehow become one of my comfort playthroughs to watch. It's like... this, The Witness, and Breath Of The Wild (or several of the Zeldas) from you. I'm sick and tired and brain needs familiar entertainment, so here I am again.
Subnautica is such a amazing game. It is full of beauty and wonder and interesting stuff. And I really like the music in it, all the different kind of music.
Really glad this finally won, I've been voting for it and been looking forward to seeing you play this. I love this game. I played mostly creative on and off for a few years when the game was in early access, and have run through the whole story on Freedom Mode since January, but have not yet done so on Survival. Good luck and have fun. Fear not the "missiles with teeth", those are only the start on planet 4546B.
Its just an ocean Keith, what is the worst that could happen ? You find Ry'leth in the depths and Cthulu shatters your sanity with fear, rebuilding you as a mindflayer ? I'm sure you will be fine.
Yay! Subnautica! This is gonna be good! About the chugging: Subnautica did get better about it (it was so much worse during Early Access), but the game still has some major pop-in issues, especially if you move quickly between biomes. Using an SSD does help a bit, but I don't think there's any real way to get rid of it entirely, at least I never found a way to do it. (Edit: Basically I'm saying, don't be surprised if some frame stutters remain after making changes to graphics settings. YMMV.)
I’m on part six by now, but figured I’d say I love your video style. I don’t know how you banter so much, but the little tidbits of scholarly knowledge you throw in are really cool.
It's pretty pathetic if an Olympic champ can only hold their breath for 44 seconds. I'm completely out of shape and could probably still do 40 or so while swimming.

I have an essay to share with you about that! ua-cam.com/video/Sz80210ipGc/v-deo.html TLDW: Subnautica is not a Horror game, but a Terror game, and those are quite different things!
I've never played it because before I saw the game play, I heard it was exploration. Months go by and everyone who I've seen play is going "oh my god, what is that???" , "holy crap I'm not going there!!" , "Jeebus no. No. No. NO." Yes. It's a terror game. And I'm too scared to get it myself Lmfao
Also I notice people mentioning a fear of the ocean. I was apprehensive at first of playing this game, but I did it anyway and you can rest assured that it's entirely worth it! Not sure how far along he already is though, but thought I'd say that anyway.

I've always heard really good things about this game but never worked up the courage to play it because ~the ocean is scary~ Glad you'll do it for me lol!
This is a game where it helps to know the bare minimum on how to get started. Stay near your pod and get fish for food and one specific one for water (bladderfish). Make a scanner ASAP (which I am glad you did), along with repair tool, knife, and most importantly a Habitat Builder. Do NOT build waterproof lockers. Instead make a starter base and store thing in that. Once you got those things done, look for equipment to scan. The survival elements become much easier over time and become more of an exploration game in the long term. There is a lot of surprises and things to discover, and one of those games I wish I can forget and reexperience for the first time. The biggest thing that can’t be taught is inventory management. One just have to get a feel for it.

I never finished games when I was a kid too! I bought Final Fantasy VII on release and then finished it like 14 years later :D Can't believe I didnt watch this at the time- V excited!
When I was younger I played Gothic 2 which takes place on an Island. If you swim out too far into the ocean, a giant sea monster pops up out of nowhere and eats you. This suddenly happening with no warning terrified me so much that I am still deathly afraid of water in video games. And it seems I was not the only one because said sea monster was removed in the Night Of The Raven expansion. If you have that installed, you simply drown.
5:15 I didn’t know we lived together 😂 I think I can count on one hand the games I have beaten. And I do think it stems from the fact that if I put it down for too long I feel the need to start over.
“.....kill all of the sharks....” is all the excuse we need. Cmon, we’ll start by offing the hammerhead sharks; what with their weird heads and scary teeth. JK, sharks are pretty cool
keith seriously there are worse things then sharks at least a shark will just kill you most likely instantly. Im not afraid of the deep ocean but one thing that scares me a lot is creatures like the morays and I learned the reasons why when I took the diving license. The morays will basically bite you and lock there jaws hard enuph that you need surgery to remove it but mostly you dont have time enough fore that so you need to saw off your hand, arm, leg or foot and then if you dont get treated fast enough you can look forward too a somewhat fast but very painful death
I've googled around a bit and it seems that moray bites really aren't as bad as you describe here. To this point it is believed that the crinotoxins of morays are not very dangerous and only lead to increased pain and bleeding It is true though that because the teeth aren't exactly clean, if you're unlucky they can carry some dangerous bacteria that would love to try on a new host...
There are different types of morays and yes tthere bites are really that bad since they cant let go once there jaws are locked and that means that you need surgery or to amputate. I also checked the facts since its been a few years. Also my diving teacher told us the story about a diver he knew who hath to amputate his foot with a saw since they could not pray off the moray from his leg and the time did not allow fore them to wait to get to a hospital since they where miles away out on the ocean. he also knew of one diver who wanted to wait to get to a doctor and died from the crinotoxins and the blood loss
I can't find any reported deaths by the moray eel or it's toxins worldwide. (The only ones I found were deaths by secondary infections when the wound was infected with Vibrio or Pseudomonas) They are normally not aggressive, but it seems because of poor eyesight they can also mistake you for food and it's possible you'll loose a finger if not careful. Bigger ones can take some serious bites of flesh, so I can see surgery or even amputations being needed in those rare cases. (It's not my intention to belittle such an attack, since they indeed do lock jaws and the bites are extremely painful) If you find a source that proves me wrong, I'd of course be interested in reading it if you could post the link...
