Love the Smith n Cross. Over ripe banana on the nose is so prevalent. Funk. Great value.

Great video! Have to echo your praise for Privateer. I have a bottle of their Distiller's Drawer BiB rum and absolutely love it. Perhaps some of my enjoyment is the journey I had actually getting my hands on a bottle out here in California. Definitely recommended.

I’m not Haitian but you got to try Barbancout 5 star 8 year at $28 to $30. You can go a step up or (range $20 to $56) down in there selections. Very unique to me and a mainstay. You can find every where in the states.
I would appreciate you doing a tasting and give your results.

first time I ever got sick/drunk on alcohol, I was in college and it was on Rum & Coke. I am sure it was el-cheapo rum since it was a fraternity Halloween party. Really haven't done much rum since then. I think after 30 years it is time to re-visit rum. Thanks for the vid.

Hi my friend Lui, I am getting a bottle of Smith & Cross tomorrow. I have the Appleton Estate 8yo and Woods and other rums to 75% ABV. I am very careful to blend the high strength rums in my drinks for I don’t want to blow myself away!
    Kind regards,

Couldn’t agree more. The only difference I have is due to selection. Being from Michigan I buy Dr Bird as my local rum and I try to keep a cheap white (Plantation 3 Star) and then a little higher quality as I can’t find Flor De Cana so I buy Probitas, Real McCoy 3, or Hamilton White depending on my selection that day.

    • @jayz2751

I finally got some Dr Bird since they don’t sell it in IL. It’s very good I like it a lot. I heard it’s rum from Hampden which is one of the best in Jamaica probably my favorite.

Surprised to see Privateer on here. I happened upon a bottle in Westminster, MA. It's the white rum version and I wasn't a huge fan. For a white rum it had a bit of funk. But tonight, before I even saw your video, I made a daiquiri with it. I went from not liking it on first sip to really liking it by the end. It's the sort of thing that grows on you. I wouldn't use it as a well liquor as it may put off people expecting bacardi. Smith and Cross, not sold on it. I actually love the smell of it but it's funk isn't pleasant to me in a cocktail. Maybe I'm not funky enough yet. I love Appleton in a daiquiri. Just enough Jamaican funk.

So Appleton Estate are a reputable, quality buy? I tried the 15 and thought it was quite nice and recently found a 21 for a FANTASTIC price (cheaper than the US and more than HALF of the $250usd they charge in Jamaica 😳) but haven't had the time to sit down with it yet.

I agree totally on the Jamaican rums and the Plantation 3 Stars. Hamiltons aren't available on my continent... However, Flor de Cana... Now, I don't like ANY strong booze plain, but that one tasted BAD. I've not tried it in a cocktail yet, so it might prove me wrong... maybe.

  • @lrvogt1257

Of the four rums there that I've had, I'd take Appleton Estate 12 year old over the Signature. Yes, it's more expensive but I'm just making cocktails for me. I've been mixing Appleton Estate 12 and Pusser's Gunpowder Proof for most dark rum cocktails.
Plantation 3 Stars makes an excellent cocktail like Piña Coladas & Daiquiris I hadn't noticed it's that much sweeter than similar brands but I tend to use less or no extra sugar in recipes.
I get why some may like Smith & Cross but I find the bitter grapefruit-rind after-taste unpleasant.
To me, the dominant flavor in Flor de Caña 4 is ethanol. It's not for me.

You are completely missing out on the "Rhum Agricole" type, made in the French West Indies. The critical difference is that Rhum Agricole is made from the raw pressed juice of the sugarcane, whereas all of the other rums in the Caribbean are made from molasses. The raw sugarcane juice, called "vezou" is fermented prior to distillation, and the distillate is then filtered with activated charcoal. The result is a rum that has a fresh scent of sugarcane and vanilla, with a clean palate. It is sold white or aged. Probably the best brand, noted among connoisseurs from Martinique, is Neisson - somewhat hard to find in store but available from the distillery in the internet. But there are others, such as Clément, Saint François, etc. Cheaper variants are easier to find in stores, such as Dillon. While Saint James is a rhum agricole, it is the Jose Cuervo of French rums ; not worth its weight in water. Worthy of note as well, is a brown (aged) rum variety made in Haïti, which can be absolutely sublime : Barbancourt. Definitely worth a try. The creole from Guadeloupe and Martinique drink their white rum with a twist of lime and a dash of sugarcane syrup. The most common long drink is the Planteur, which in its best varieties is made with red guava juice, pineapple, a splash of orange, and nutmeg.
