Me and my cousin were crazy in 1999. We'd call for hours and use sound effect CDs, Toys sound and stuff too!
There was internet then too. It just wasn't as fast of a connection speed and wasn't as big and had less users.
We did so many of these.
Gen X is still proud and beautiful.
I used to love to watch late-night cable access shows in the early 1990s. Most of the calls to these shows were like the ones in this video. It was highly entertaining! I’d sometimes feel sorry for the hosts, so I’d call and ask real questions just to give the hosts a break from the craziness.
I wonder if the prank calls helped their viewership

I know they were part of the reason I watched; sometimes one of the prank callers and the host would get into hilarious contests, each trying to insult the other as it got more and more ridiculous. Other times, it was just annoying, like with people just screaming. But that was the nature of a cable access call-in show and I’m sure plenty of people watched just for the prank calls.
The penguin joke cracked me up all 3 times.

In the late 90s my friends and I in middle school would randomly call 1-800-MONKEYS from pay phones (it was some zoo and 800 #s were free and untraceable). We would harass those poor people a few times a week and our whole schtick was we wanted to purchase a monkey (idk why we thought it was so funny). They would outright hang up, get mad and tell us to stop, or chuckle and disconnect. Finally after months of this tired joke, a woman answered and played along with us and started asking what kind of monkey and how much we were willing to spend and how would we take care of it. It completely baffled us and we never called again, but she taught us an important lesson... if you don't want to be the butt of someone's joke, lean into it and play along and it completely steals their "power". That woman gave me more life guidance than any teacher ever did ❤
I used to call 1 800 flowers when I was a kid.
My whole thing was to just stay on the line as long as possible until the operator would tire of my antics.
Usually right around the time it took to give them a credit card numbet.
Dude we use to have a party line going and called all kinds of numbers. Didn't matter if it was local or 1-800 numbers. This one friend of mine could mimic Mrs Cleo the physic and we thought that was the funniest shit. We would call people and he would do his impression giving them a reading. Then he would tell them the amount owed and people would go crazy over it because at the start of the call he told them it was free. He would tell them the call charge would be in their next phone bill lmfao

When I was a kid our big prank was to call someone up and pretend we were looking for the suicide prevention hotline, and when they said no we made a sound that was supposed to sound like a gunshot then hung up.
Thats pretty dark dude but i like it. We would order a huge banquet of food the this guy in the street that we hated, the takeout place ended up blacklisting his address
