Southgate has shown what a genius he is by turning excellence into mediocrity. In the 8 years he's been in charge, name 5 times England has beaten a good team.... The England team has world class players who have won the Champions League under Ancelotti, Klopp and Guardiola. Everyone knows the answer is to play one holding midfielder, play Foden as a 10, play Gordon/Palmer on the left and ATTACK!!!! Southgate has been very lucky in tournament football regarding the fixtures. 2018 World Cup, the first good team England played was in the semi's - England lost. 2020 Euro's first good team was Italy in the final - England lost. The last World Cup, played France lost....
Off the top of my head... Beat Croatia, Germany, Italy twice, Spain. My guess, however, is that you will claim these are not good teams.

In 2018, only good teams they faced were Belgium twice and Croatia, they lost all 3 games, 2021 they beat Germany (worst German side in decades though) and lost to Italy. The best they have been was probably 2022 where they played a close game against France tbh
Since when has Bellingham become the best #10 in the world? He’s a Central Midfielder, he’s supposed to be next to Rice, with Foden or Palmer infront.
Since he went to the biggest club in the world where one of the best coaches of all time played him as a 10 and he ended up the third highest scorer in the league and voted best player.
Think Southgate mistakenly thinks he's a 10 but he was more of a false 9 for RM... He had playmakers in Kroos and Modric to create the chances for him and valverde for the defensive work rate so he could focus on attack (semi free role). Ancelotti managed him perfectly.
To compensate for Kane, Bellingham was more of a Target man when Kane went drifting. Kane drifting problem happened in previous tournaments too. So many time Eng with ball and Kane was no where he needs to be to help the team.
Kane just needs to stay up top dragging the defenders back or occupy that space to create more space for Foden and Bellingham. He does that for Bayern...

Finally, someone who can see that rice doesn’t make England better. Mainoo has to sit in that holding role as he is technically one of the best footballers we have. When will England realise Int’l level You need to have people who are good technically. It’s not rocket science

Rice has been non influential and seems only interested in protecting the central backs . Could be his specific instruction but overall I think he was not influential and technically , at times , poor .
Indeed Rice was technically , at times , poor . Lost ball too easy, some wrong passes . Low mobility , but that can be said of all XI.

They made the difference. So clear and obvious. Saka is stale. Foden cannot produce anything without Rodri/De Bruyne making it for him. Bellingham cannot play to the same standard in international football as he does in the farmers leagues 🤣 the only players that have proven themselves in weaker teams in the worlds hardest league is Mainoo, Palmer and Gordon!

Palmer did barely anything and his one good chance was a shit shot. Saka is way better on the wing than Palmer your all dumb. Back 5 the same- Rice and Mainoo together Gordon left and saka right then play Kane and Palmer together up front drop foden, bellingham or play Palmer/Watkins and have Foden or Bellingham ahead of Rice. Having Foden run central, Rice run central, Bellingham central then kane drop deep central is so useless. With the only attacking player being Saka is painful Saka is doing great but the game plan is the same so 2 people just go out to hold him now.

I was really impressed with Gordon. Palmer and Mainoo get the credit. But the guy only had a few mins and he terrified their defence. Before the ball would go to saka…tap, tap…back to defence….
Kane has Zero Pace needs replacing by Watkins. Saka and Foden need replacing. Palmer did more in 15 mins tonight than they have done in 3 Games.

England's buildup play is so slow that this allows the opponents to organise themselves. Drop Kane, Foden & Trippier. Southgate must have plan B if plan A does not work, which it seems that Douthgate has not prepared for over the past 3 games. The manager and players seem to be happy that they top the table playing poorly. This says everything about the state of the English team.

Dont think you should drop either of them but Bellingham needs to play with rice further back and you put foden in the 10 role. I know that's the new role Bellingham has for Madrid and hes had success with them in that role but it's not working here. Also Anthony Gordon needs to be starting games because he can thread passes in that final third so effectively but giving him 5 mintures is ridiculous

This is the problem with having a politician as a football manager.
Time after time the British media hype the team up to the eyeballs and then enjoy knifing the manager when things are not working out. They came top of their easy group (scraped through more like). If England play the Netherlands next, I hope they’ve been practising fast sprinting because the Dutch are fast. Agree totally with Did Hamann that Gareth Southgate is too loyal to the players. Phil Foden has left the team because his partner has given birth to his third child so that may help.
They should start the next game the way they ended it, apart from Kane who needs a serious thought, especially with Watkins and even Toney behind him
For 36 minutes against Serbia we had good possession except we only attacked once with Saka who then crossed and we scored. If we had attacked and crossed more we would have scored 3 or 4 goals. Except we need a left winger so Gordon. Or swoop Saka on the left and Foden on the right. It was only the group matches, so it's not how you start, it's how you finish . Let's hope in the knock out stages with sudden death we get better? However, Slovenia are the same strength as Slovakia so don't know what type of game to expect.
The weirdest thing about all this, is that the England selection and more particularly the formation picks itself. Everyone in England seems to know that bar the one man who matters.
The only problem is that there has been no threat from the left wing, because Southpaw hasn't picked a proper left winger to start.
What's the point in taking form players like Gordon and Palmer, and not starting them ??

Playing Bellingham forward behind the striker seems not to work, this is England not Madrid, he doesn't create much. Move him back, free space for Foden and Palmer to operate. If Madrid were to be England, they will choose different system and not play Bellingham behind striker.

I just don't understand why Southgate didn't call up some 18-stone troglodyte from the non-leagues, fit him with a lead-lined, tungsten-capped hobnail boot (just like the old 'horseshoe in the boxing glove' trick)
Stick him in a number 8 shirt then get the wingers to cut it back to him whereupon he smacks the ball in the general direction of the opposition's goal.
Even if the keeper saves it, he'll be stretchered off with multiple compound fractures, thus weakening the opposition and eventually depleting their subs bench
It is not the formation, if you keep 5 players behind the ball and create no tempo and no overlaps, you get no play. England have played the slowest football in the world, along with France and The Netherlands. Boring. But because all of the talent they win a lot of games. They will beat The netherlands, they will again reacht the semi finals against Portugal, a team that chokes easily, maybe the even the final. But they should take risks. That is what playing a game is meant for.
Either we are all correct and England has the most serious problems of the last 10 years OR this is a very carefully hidden tactic to pretend to be crap and scrape through an easy group without having to move out of 2nd gear.

IF this is the secret strategy by Safegate and the team, where the young rested players, the likes of Mainoo, Palmer, Gordon, Wharton, Bowen, Watkins and Toney are suddenly unleashed with full Premier League energy in the knock out phase, then it will be the greatest act of deception since operation Mincemeat.

His squad selection needs to be questioned. In attack he has 4 right wingers to only 1 left winger who has barely kicked a ball at international level. 3 strikers who barely get a minute because he wont take off Kane. In defence he has 3 right backs to 0 fit left backs. He then compounds all of that by playing hos rw's on the left and his rb's at left back and in central midfield. This will be one for the ages 🤣
