I don't know a lot about footbal, but even I could see that the slow play began at the back - Stones, Trippier, Walker - sideways, back, sideways, back. None of them wanted to pass it forward. That has been coached into them at national level - it must have been. I don't think Pep would be happy if they did that every Saturday. Rather than make an incisive pass forward, their instinct is always to go back, and that totally destroys any momentum.
They don't pass it forward because they have limited options showing to pass to. You watch Rice when his defenders have the ball. He follows and hides behind the opposition 9 or 10, closing off his space and ability to receive as an option. Then the defenders just pass it up to the wingers who are too deep when they receive it and never in a position to take the ball forward. Get a 6 in there who will show and demand the ball and things will speed up, and so will opportunities to move the ball forward.

Coming close to beating Germany in the last group game and having an easy time with Italy. Yes they had a draw against Scotland, but England had a draw against Denmark, Slovenia and went into overtime against Slovakia. England hasn't improved during any of those games. They look now the same as they did in their first game. Switzerland is better than those teams by quite a bit. Unless England miraculously play good in the next game I don't see them beating Switzerland.

Yes if you lift the trophy nobody cares who you beat on the way there, but if it's "they made it 4 times in a row to the quarter finals" it is rather valid question to ask who did they beat to get to those. What got England through was luck, not resilience. Luck that the ball didn't go into the goal after the intercepted pass for a 2:0. And luck that one of countless balls that just got kicked into the box landed near a player that was open. The strategy for the most expensive squad in the tournament was for 50-60 minutes "kick the ball into the box and hope for the best". That's not skill, that's luck. And that's the best Southgate can get out of the best players in the tournament. And when his team takes the lead he parks the bus and lets Slovakia run the game. Inviting them to get an equaliser. Spain showed how a title contender plays. Even when Goergia got the lead, there was no question over who is going through. Spain was dominating and it was attack after attack after attack. I don't know a lot about footbal, but even I could see that the slow play began at the back - Stones, Trippier, Walker - sideways, back, sideways, back. None of them wanted to pass it forward. That has been coached into them at national level - it must have been. I don't think Pep would be happy if they did that every Saturday. They don't pass it forward because they have limited options showing to pass to. You watch Rice when his defenders have the ball. He follows and hides behind the opposition 9 or 10, closing off his space and ability to receive as an option. Then the defenders just pass it up to the wingers who are too deep when they receive it and never in a position to take the ball forward. Get a 6 in there who will show and demand the ball and things will speed up, and so will opportunities to move the ball forward.

Coming close to beating Germany in the last group game and having an easy time with Italy. Yes they had a draw against Scotland, but England had a draw against Denmark, Slovenia and went into overtime against Slovakia. England hasn't improved during any of those games. They look now the same as they did in their first game. Switzerland is better than those teams by quite a bit. Unless England miraculously play good in the next game I don't see them beating Switzerland.

The biggest issue not being spoken about is that the backline and Rice are soooo slow. They pass back and forth and sideways, don’t move the ball fast enough giving the opposition time to reset. It’s a massive massive problem.

Yes if you lift the trophy nobody cares who you beat on the way there, but if it's "they made it 4 times in a row to the quarter finals" it is rather valid question to ask who did they beat to get to those.
What got England through was luck, not resilience. Luck that the ball didn't go into the goal after the intercepted pass for a 2:0. And luck that one of countless balls that just got kicked into the box landed near a player that was open. The strategy for the most expensive squad in the tournament was for 50-60 minutes "kick the ball into the box and hope for the best". That's not skill, that's luck. And that's the best Southgate can get out of the best players in the tournament. And when his team takes the lead he parks the bus and lets Slovakia run the game. Inviting them to get an equaliser.
Spain showed how a title contender plays. Even when Goergia got the lead, there was no question over who is going through. Spain was dominating and it was attack after attack after attack. Even after taking the lead, they didn't back off to give Georgia the opportunity to play. They just kept hammering them. Slovakia didn't take the invitation for an equaliser, but stronger teams will, and they will not back down after taking the lead like Slovakia has.
I would be surprised if they get by Switzerland. I expected them to scrape by Slovakia with a 1:0, and they couldn't even meet those low expectations.
