Just to avoid any confusion for those who care, the Diminished "scale" as I refer to it in this particular video is technically a seventh arpeggio, but I find these intervals are the easiest to incorporate into blues, rather than the half or full symmetrical diminished scales. Studied both classical guitar, Learned using diminishes runs with Villa lobo's etudes and preludes esp.Prelude no. 1. And the Mickey Baker book, Still did't know what I was doing , But, like Mickey would say "If it sounds good play it"
This was great lesson. I had already sort of learnt the diminished scale from a previous video and could run up and down the neck with it. But now I can apply it in my improv I'm going to spend time actually getting to KNOW the scale intimately ans find my own ways to move around it rather than straight up and down like a robot. This was sick \m/
thx for this lesson, you are a real life guitar hero :) I like your very articulate and relaxed soulful way of playing also, your tight phrasing is cool. peace and love from the Pacific Northwest of Canada
Thought I had all ready subscribed to you, sorry 'bout that. Good vid.! As much as I love learning about music UA-cam vids sometimes drive me batty. I think its the ADHD, but you move at a good clip while keeping your ideas cohesive, and I think there's a lot here for theorists and non alike. Though honestly I do enjoy your ease in talking about it because many 'veterans' I run into out there seem obsessed with 'feel' in a way that destroys their ability to talk constructively about their process. I still have trouble rattling off '1/4oz' when describing drink recipes, but music made me stubborn enough to keep working at it, because little things like that help. Keep at it man!
pentatonic and diminished scale like water and oil difficult to fusion but you can....I also use jamming blues use pentatonik, harmonik minor, dominant and diminished...its cool..
I always associated the tritone with blues considering the blues scale is a minor pentatonic scale with the tritone thrown in between the third and fourth note of the scale (the perfect fourth and fifth if thinking in diatonic intervals).
Hey man great Vid! btw are you planning on making anymore vids on Mark Tremonti on his tone and how he plays and stuff? that would be AWESOME! Plus I think it would be perfect if you did since there's not too many videos about that stuff on him
Great Video! I'm now trying to incorporate diminished Arpeggio based licks over V7 chords. Questions for ya about other aspects of what you were playing: How did you get the V7 chord (with major third) in the key of A-minor? Are you actually in A-Harmonic or A-Melodic minor (or something else?), and then using whatever that scale is combined with A-blues pent scale for your lead over the 1 and 4 chord?
I just watched this today and I was thinking the same thing.. when he showed the G# as a leading tone back to the A7 chord, I was thinking, it's not present at all in the dim scale that was presented.
nice lesson. can you replace the diminished thing you're doing with a whole-half or half-whole diminished pattern? and when you say A diminished, isn't it also C dim and Eb dim because they're all minor thirds apart?
What's the diminished scale or sound that starts a half step below the root? I thought if you played in say the key of A like you are you would start a half step behind main box for instance!
@@FullMetalDMZ which would make sense if he was using the D# Dim to lead up to the E7, but he's not, he's replacing the E7 with it and using it to lead back to the Am.
Hey in the future when you are showing a very specific chord or scale etc, can you remove all effects like reverb, echo, distortion just for a second, so we do not have any overtones that cause it to bleed through to all other pitches? It could just be me, but if anyone has played music for over a decade you hear "everything", so for example take "All along the watch tower" and imagine that when ever you hear it or play it; you can't help but want to transition seamlessly to a Japanese pentatonic based song or you hear it at the same time. Or metal songs sound like opening theme songs to cartoons you watched as a kid. I can't be the only one who has this curse of hearing 2 songs or more simultaneously with EVERY song. It's the double edged sword of experience in a subject. "Sigh"
I'm so confused why you are playing Adim7 arpeggios and not Abdim7 arpeggois (A flatdim7). The Abdim7 arpeggio would lead your ear into resolving a half step up into A. Also a abdim7 arpeggio shares notes with a E7 chord. Can anyone explain this to me??
i never picked any teacher learning guitar. in 2 years playing guitar i've already known a lot, some theories, scales, weird chords. but wtf is diminish really? i think it's the only basic thing i still don't get it
A diminished triad is the root, minor 3rd, and diminished 5th (ex: C Eb Gb). You can add a diminished 7th to form a diminished 7th chord (C Eb Gb Bbb) or a minor 7th to form a half-dimished 7th chord (C Eb Gb Bb), sometimes called minor 7b5. This is what diminished totality is going to mean in most popular music. There are are also scales which are formed from alternating half and whole steps. This kind of scale is more commonly seen in thrash and death metal.
it's easier if you just expose your hearing to it. it basically has a dominant 7th sound except that it's root note is a semitone higher giving it a dark, dissonant quality...
Just to avoid any confusion for those who care, the Diminished "scale" as I refer to it in this particular video is technically a seventh arpeggio, but I find these intervals are the easiest to incorporate into blues, rather than the half or full symmetrical diminished scales. great vids man.. was wondering if you could include scale diagrams, or backing tracks? or both.
@@kellymcgrath5541 So the Half-Whole Diminished scale?
@@BlasterJunos yes bruh u can use that in minor sharp4 or half diminis chors it sounds amazing....good luck
Thanks buddy. 🤘🏽🤘🏽
This video explained exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for all the good lessons!!!
i really like how you take the time to re-iterate important points. you explain this well. thank you for your help!
My favourite diminished blues lick is from Big Bad Moon by Joe Satriani at the end of the last solo.
Classic Satch
very cool sound. I have watched countless blues guitar vids and not really seen this before. kudos
Brilliant. This channel is fast becoming one of my favorites. Well thought out content. Excellent sound quality. Bravo.

Thanks for the great lesson Tyler! Those licks were finger lickin good!

Superb lesson! I've never thought of it this way. Tyler wins again!
SO MANY GOOD TIPS! this is the best youtube guitar channel if i had money i would buy his stuff
as always, no matter how long you play - one can always learn. I really appreciate your channel. Learned a nice Dim lick tonight :)
i like your setup. Thnx for adding the provisual video so i can see your piano, light and camera. I need that setup....kool. 😁👍
I wanna be like you when I grow up man you're my idol atm and I just want to be able to have the knowledge you have so I'm trying my best in all I do
I wouldn't have thought to used diminished! Awesome video !
so does that mean one can play Yngwie over Clapton?
ganyuy uil something like that 😂
ganyuy uil . Nope.
The lord hath spoketh.
Please no
I can't imagine Yngwie over Clapton in ANY context whatsoever.
yo this guy is smart and explains things clearly and succinctly. on top of that, siq guitar player too
Beautiful! Easy to conquer and great tool! Thanks!
Cool video, i also like to use the same concept a half step down, like over the E7 use G#dim. It also create a really cool effect.
Silvério Simioni bro exactly G# dim over E 7 C# dim over A and so on what he said i dont understand
Correct, start from third of the chord and you'll be good ;)
Tyler, you are the best guitar teacher on youtube in my opinion. Buying your Guitar Super System now!
You are my favourite UA-cam guitarist man..... You rock!!!!!

Exactement.sur E7 on peut jouer F° G#° B° Db ° ...mais A ° ne contient aucune note compatible avec l’accord de dominante

Can you please make a video explaining how to make guitar licks longer, thank you!

Have you got albums or an EP? I don't see you on Spotify. I want to just listen to some of your songs and soloing.
Similar to how you incorporate the Harmonic Minor scale into a progression as well. It only sounds right on the chords that want to resolve.
What's the diminished scale or sound that starts a half step below the root? I thought if you played in say the key of A like you are you would start a half step behind main box for instance!
He's playing A diminished over E7 (not over the Am chord), so it's the same as playing D# diminished (half step down the E7 chord).
@@FullMetalDMZ which would make sense if he was using the D# Dim to lead up to the E7, but he's not, he's replacing the E7 with it and using it to lead back to the Am.

@musiciswin what gauge strings do you normally use and do you prefer coated or non-coated strings?
I need to learn that sweep picking you are doing at the top of the diminished scale. How do I gain that same speed?
i have the same guitar 🤘🏻👌🏻
damn I wished I knew what the hell you're talking about.....still..you explain things really well.
That fucking solo
says great vid listen to turn it up
Does this also apply for phrygian mode? I've heard people use phrygian mode in blues progressions when the five-chord is playing.
Phrygian dominant was what i meant, haha. Thanks for the tip.
Perfect, where can I get the backing track on : 4:50 ?

Which scale is the one between 4:58 and 5:01?
hey Tyler great video, I am thinking to pick up a PRS se standard what do you think about it
ps. love your videos
I own a PRS SE (tremonti sig; little different shape) but their guitars are awesome. Highly recommended
RHCP Guitar Covers thanks bro
but make sure you like the feel bc they all play great, but i like the feel of mine and my brother doesnt as much
Could somebody please explain the theory or even just the shape that he's doing at 4:58 ?
Don't know if anyone will see this, but could you still use a diminished lick over a chord even if it is an inversion, it's sounds a little off to me
what is your guitar?
are you playing lydian on the four too?
or is it dorian?
didnt sound like the diminished scale sounded more like an arpegiation of the dim7 chord
Tyler will u please tab out that solo
Use them ears
Super
I'm so confused why you are playing Adim7 arpeggios and not Abdim7 arpeggois (A flatdim7). The Abdim7 arpeggio would lead your ear into resolving a half step up into A. Also a abdim7 arpeggio shares notes with a E7 chord. Can anyone explain this to me??
Someone wanted to make blues, instead of jazz Mesa thinks. xD come on, blues lesson the next one it is. May the force with you be bro.
Yeah cmon Tyler just make a blues and jazz free lesson :D jk don't want to abuse Tyler's kindness
But if you play over E7 if you analyze the chord then diminished triad sitting inside is G# one-seems to me you play D# diminished triad im confused🤔
what is that other "outside" sounding scale he is using? I hear it often in jazz/blues stuff not sure what they are doing though
I think he is just using chord tones
backing track?

Its a triad with a b5. If you dont know what a b5 I suggest you to check how chords are formed.
Is it TheLegend27?
Yes, theLegend27...
Reminds me a bit of Jeff Healey I don't know why
Reminds me of Alex Skolnick
0:54 that not the A dim scale that an arpeggio
Playing over the most used backing track in youtube??
nice shoes ;-)
Why does he bend with one finger? Does he want an award or something?
