Champs! What should we discuss next?! What would you love to see a video about?
Surely amp modelling
Modern guitar songs... You know polyphia and stuff
What scale should we use for the diminished chords, and it would be nice if you give some songs suggestions based on diminished progression. :D
Slide guitar
The genius of Lenny Breau would be awesome
My day just got Augmented!
Ohh.. I see...
Tell us what happened! We can't be held in suspense 4 long
After this comment I'll go to the church play to Gsus
Funny, I would have though it was diminished.
man, that's some major comedy you got right there
My confusion with these chords have been fully diminished
*has
That makes one of us.
And my understanding has augmented
That last bit about being able to resolve to 4 different chords has amazing potential to be used as a pivot chord for key changes. Go wherever you want!
Once you discover it's unstability and blank character it becomes one of the most amazing compositional tools. You can jump between keys like you want and it enhances musical vocabulary so much that it never gets boring while allowing to create amazing and non obvious progressions.
Unstability?? 😂😂😂
A music teacher once told me a diminished chord can be stuck between any two chords. This comes in handy when trying to harmonize non chordal notes in a melody.
as a guitarist with no real formal music training this just solved a huge mystery for me. thanks dude!
“I’m such a good singer”
Earned my like.
Quinn Humphrey lol same 😂
These are straight-up Spongebob BGM chords
Thank you! I am not the only one that heard that!
Yeah Spongebob invented it. Morons

ok so I never, ever post a comment under a video. But man, I was about to go to bed, and next thing I know is that I am singing along with my guitar and my new diminished friends ! Thanks a lot Paul. I really mean it.
Davie504: Slap like now
Paul Davids: Gently hit that button...

Paul understands that people don't like to be given orders
One song that uses it a lot is John Frusciante - The Slaughter, and it's such a good song.
Also forgot Red Hot Chili Peppers - Road Trippin bridge. Using the up thing.
I was just about to comment that Frusciante uses these chords a lot. Good thing I checked that someone beat me to it!
Embrace the diminished! I've always taken advantage that the 7th of the Major scale is a half-diminished. Even that the Major 7 chord has that slightly unresolved feel. Great video! Always inspiring.
I love this guy. He plays wonderfully, and explains it elegantly as well.
Crowmatic, cause he's playing blackbird
I realised that too😂😂
Good one.
Thought the same about "Black Bird" but you beat me to it.
Top 10 underrated comments
Wonderful tips there brother. Nice touch, thanks.
Boom! Excellent explanation! Thanks again Paul!
I am feeling proud that I can understand whatever he is saying. Thank you very much Paul Davids.
I have learned so much from your and other’s videos on UA-cam. Thank you so much for all you do, I know how much work goes into making even a single video. It is much appreciated that you share your wealth of knowledge
„The only guitarist you should try to be better as is the guitarist you were yesterday“
I don’t know who said that but every time I watch one of your videos I learn something new. Thanks a lot!
Thanks Paul, great lesson! I love when it's short and full of information like this one, it's very inspiring
You're awesome mate. Just got to a new level of guitaring. Showing how and where to use this chord in relation to various other chords as well as the three inversions were the best.
Exactly the kind of vdeos that makes me feel like I can reach a different level at playing the guitar. I am just a fan of this guy !
So well explained and practical. Thank you.
great lesson! best lesson I've seen regarding practical uses for the diminished chord
Oh that gibson! Beautiful!!!!
I'm so sad I cannot upvote a million times...
Thanks a lot this was one of the most useful lesson of my whole life.
Thank you Paul for once again exploring an important piece of theory to help all our playing. I’ve watched numerous videos discussing the diminished chords. But as always your explanations and more importantly your demonstrations of this concept are crystal clear! You are an excellent teacher!
Wonderful little tutorial! Gonna go off and explore this now. Thanks.
the first few chords in the video reminded me of that one hectic theme from spongebob
I thought the same thing hahaha
Mind. Blown. You rock, Paul! Just finished learn, practice, play and loved it. Can't wait for your next course!
Very useful!! Can't wait to try it! Thanks a lot !!
I don't watch a Paul Davids video for a couple of months and I forget just how awesome they are. :D
Please keep up the great lessons, you've helped me get past the rut I was stuck in for years.
Very well done, Paul! I’ve regularly utilized dim7 chords in my DADGAD songwriting. However, I’ve typically only used it as a “passing chord” between the V and the vi. Your exposition on the possibilities was excellent! Thank you for your insights!
Awesome video - I love the bite sized videos with interesting tidbits like this!
Paul Davis, I have never seen a video lesson like this ever on youtube. You're a brilliant teacher. I am in love with this video :)
Thank you for this lesson man. Now I can try to play some Diminished Randy Rhoad licks I believe! I was wondering if you could do a lesson on odd time signatures
Your voice is so soothing. You have to make an audiobook or ameditaton-cd! I would buy, listen and get healed!
Paul, thank you for this video. I've been playing a long time but learned little theory in the process. Trying to rectify that now, little by little. You are one of the best guitar teachers on UA-cam. I have watched several of your other videos and find you very professional. Always calm and relaxed, presenting your topic simply and without rushing through the material. I feel like I'm sitting in the room and you're patiently explaining things to me. Well done.
Thank you for showing the world not to throw away their diminished chords. I love em.
Tim Henson from Polyphia uses diminished chords wonderfully
this was so awesomely explained... really opens up my playing using diminished chords! thanks Paul!!
Great video covering the overlooked, beautiful resonance of diminished chords! Thank you for this!!!
Really well delivered. Thank you!
Sounds like Black Bird by The Beatles :3
What, at 7:03 ?
@@petercaron3799 I imagine he means at the beginning, when he's showing that F to A walkup. That's also "Blackbird," just in a different key.
It's a similar progression so it's obvious
yep!
Great tutorial Paul! I'll try to use this chords in my music:)
Nice!
Can I use your tracks for free?
@@christianinspiration9029 yes you can.
@@DSProductionsMusicForVideos That sounds good
Paul, GREAT work, as ever. Just when we think you've added all the spiciness we need, you go and find more spice! Incredible. I'd love to see one on mixing major, minor and mixolydian scales (pieces of them) over these kinds of chord shapes for solos.
I love the humility of your playing. Very beautiful wonderful player
Oh Paul, please, we need a tab of your version of "nobody knows when you're down and out", it sounds lovely.
+1!!!
@@mequellyall I was talking about the embellishments, not the chord progression. Obvious on Paul's E chord.
Agreed. That sounded so goooos
Goooood*
I need to start playing my guitar again. Diminished is one of my favorite sounds.
Great explanation. High-quality video. Thanks
amazing video paul, you're a wealth of musical knowledge
Road Trippin' by RHCP :-)
Isn't it Baug?
Joseph Haydn wrote an entire symphony with only two chords and a diminished chord. Check out his 49th symphony (if I remember well).
So so helpful, thank you... love your teachings
You transmit peace to me. This channel is beautiful. Thank you.
Paul ... your "diminished" chords "augmented" my day!! Thank you!! Now, when is the lesson on "augmented" chords???
Better not, how would you handle a diminished day?
Jan Hauck ... LOL!!!
So does that mean there are only 3 diminished chords? And then everything else is just an inversion?
Yes yes !
Some diminished chords have the same notes even though the root changes. For Example
A Dim- A C Eb Gb
C Dim- C Eb Gb A
Eb Dim- Eb Gb A C
They all have the same notes despite a different root. If you play them one after another it is hard to tell them apart as the distance between all notes is the same and they have the same notes. Basically the root remains ambiguous, the same applies for Augmented Chords. Which are built using major 3rds.
C Aug- C E G#
E Aug- E G# C
Its a pretty cool effect :).
Yeah man, it's magical!
well theoretically you wouldn´t call them an inversion, but in practice yes there are 3 diminished chords
And only 4 augmented chords.
Fantastic ! Thank you so much for doing this video on this topic
You're such a delightful man. You are sunshine after rain. We love you.
god that's a beautiful-sounding guitar
I haven't even streamed the whole vid but without any doubt I can say it's going to be beautiful
I know a bit of theory, then this tied SO many things together. I lost count of how many times my mind was blown. Much needed, will watch again.
Very good and clear explanations and great ideas for use. Thanks.
Ayye check out the ‘deep river blues’ chord progression. Nice!! 6:12
I lost it when he played that haha
Just what I needed right now. Growing up if I had these lessons thrown at me every month or so....damn kids these days are so lucky THANK YOU PAUL! Lol
This is the only video that I have to tap the like button. It hooked my attention and learned a new shape for diminished 7 chords. Many thanks
Lots of great stuff coming from this channel!
when I started watching i was thinking about Blackbird the entire time lol
The diminished and m6 (Django voicing) are great to move up and down and also to add tension and movement. Also, I recommend all guitarists play ukulele it changes your perspective.
Thanks for explaining this so well.
Such a simplistic and excellent explanation to the use of diminished chord. Great lesson
8:45 to 8:50
ahh the Spongebob chords
No me aguanté las ganas, y terminé sacando la canción de Bob esponja de memoria 🤣🤣🤣
I’m a punk guitarist so knowing diminished chords is a good technique to throw people off in interludes and it’s funny to see people’s reactions
Lol
You are such a relaxing person to listen to. Not just your voice, just the whole freakin' vibe man. Your videos are like falling asleep in a warm sleeping bag.
the second song he plays with the finger tap at the end is amazing thanks so much
1:52 when you realize you knocked your Gibby during a lesson 😂
Oh yeah I thought for sure there'd be a cut right after so he could check her out.
"F-F#-G-G#-A minor, I'm such a good singer" 😂😁
You missed the diminished chords
Very helpful, THANK YOU!
Dude I love this channel! The diminished chords are always so unusual. Beautiful but hard to “deal with”. Thanks for posting. Definitely gonna be implementing this on my videos! Thanks brother!
A old musician told me they were laughing chords
Sounded a lot like Road trippin' in the beginning
Tysken yep! I heard that too
Glad I'm not the only one
This video is probably the best explanation of how and where the diminished chords fit into musical riffs. I can play the heck out of them by ear, but never really picked up on how to plan where to put them. Thank you Paul!
Thanks Paul, that is the best and most practical Diminished Chord video on youtube, very inspiring!
Let me be the first to say my day just got Augmented.
lesselp ... hope no one's got "diminished"!!!
Pls say: "i did not hit her ! I did NOTTTT! oh hi Mark...."
You are tearing me apart Lisa...
Hi Paul, I enjoyed your video. Well done. Thanks for the help!
I love this tutorial, thank you very much Paul.
Road trippin
Awesomely well done good man! Loved it!
Kool! You made it very easy to understand. Thanks!
You're trully a teacher by heart. Thanks for this, really enlightening.
I’ve watched you on and off the past year or so whenever I’m in the mood to learn. Just looking for lessons but half the time the video starts it’s you. your videos must be popular on here. I’m happy everytime I watch I’m going to follow channel right now. I’ve always been iffy with diminished and this video just now made it make so much more sense to me. Your a great musician and such a good teacher thank you. All I have to do is go on UA-cam and it’s free. Thank you for sharing all this knowledge.
Awesome and concise explanation. Great that you showed us how they a re used. Been looking for that answer for a long time.
Very good video ,well explained and played .
Excellent, thank you very much! Opening new ways to explore...
Thanks this was very interesting and helpful!
I was looking to understand diminished chords & how to use them. Man, you far exceeded my expectation and also inspired me. I subscribed & I am a fan. Great work, thank you very much.
Very Nice way of explaining a seemingly complicated technique. Excellent Thanks
I really appreciate your teaching methods.
So many teachers don't discuss the use cases and the theory on why and how things work. That's how I learn. I need to know, in any key, how and why I can use something.
