For this evaluation, several categories were developed including; Precision & Accuracy, Performance (speed/power), Features, Ergonomics, and Price.
Each of the categories was ranked individually and used to determine the Best Barrel Grip Jigsaw based on the combined results.
Accuracy
For the accuracy category each of the jigsaws was ranked on accuracy in the following areas:
• Line of Sight
• Blade tracking
• Bevel accuracy when set to 45 degrees.
• Cross-cut accuracy when set to 90 degrees (how perpendicular the cut is to the surface)
Line of Sight
For the scroll cutting each saw was set to maximum speed with zero orbital action. A scrolling template was used to trace all the boards consistently, and each jigsaw was used to make numerous cuts in 3/4'" Poplar.
The DEWALT and Makita both had excellent cut line visibility, and the Makita was the best performing saw on the scroll cuts.
The Milwaukee cut line visibility was good but not great and the Hilti dust shroud got in the way of the line of sight so we removed it. We all agreed that if we owned this saw the Hilti shroud would stay off.
The Festool saw blade was difficult to see. The small-sized Diablo blade got lost [visually] inside the V-shaped blade guard.
When cutting bevels the DEWALT saw had the best bevel sightline. Makita sightlines were slightly obscured, and Festool and Milwaukee had terrible sightlines. The Hilti sightline was good, but the LED light was blocked when set to a bevel.
Clean Cutting
Getting clean jigsaw cuts with only light splintering, tear out, and surface chipping is chiefly a matter of selecting a blade that's designed for the job.
The DEWALT, Hilti, and Makita produced the cleanest edge, cutting saws with the least tear-out. This "clean-cut result," was also due to using the same Diablo blades along with the operator's skill set using the tools.
The Festool and Milwaukee surprised us with rougher cuts
Blade Deflection
Every cut was measured and evaluated for blade deflection at 45-degree and 90-degree cutting. On the 90-degree cuts, Milwaukee ranked the best, followed by Makita and Festool.
On the 45-degree cuts, the Makita ranked the best, followed by the Festool, and Milwaukee.
Blade Tracking
Tracking was evaluated by following lines to see how easy or hard it was to follow the line. The Makita, Festool, and DEWALT were the best tracking jigsaws.
It's worth noting that when scoring the line-of-sight, points were awarded based on the operator's ability to consistently see the blade cutting through the poplar. Points were not awarded based on the cut-line deviation from the template cut-line. This ensured that operator error was minimized as a primary scoring factor in this evaluation area.
Accuracy Winner - MAKITA
Makita scored tops in three out of the four categories [clean cuts, tracking, and 45-degree blade deflection] and came in second 90-degree blade deflection. It scored a near-perfect score of 5-points and is truly a nice cutting, accurate jigsaw.
Performance Testing (Power/Speed)
The sled fixture held the saws securely and the aluminum tracks kept the saw moving in a consistent and parallel fashion. The saws were in contact with the sled and the sled in contact with the workpiece.
Performance Testing (Power/Speed) - Winner Milwaukee
We rank the performance testing by normalizing Watt-hours. Milwaukee came in on top followed by Hilti and Festool. When watching this test all of the crew members commented on Milwaukee's speed, which equates to power.
Features - Winner DEWALT
The DEWALT saw scored top in four feature categories 2nd in one category and 3rd in two categories with a total score of 12-points. A real close second place went to Makita with 13-points with 1st or 2nd place scores in every category. Third place went to Milwaukee with 14-points.
Ergonomics Winner - Hilti and Makita
Hilti and Makita tied in ergonomics with 6-points, which was four points ahead of the Festool and 7-points ahead of the DEWALT. Hilti had the best grip, tied on the blade change, and was the most friendly tolefties. Makita had the best and safest trigger and tied for the best blade change.
Vibration - Winner Festool
Best Cordless Jigsaw Winner -Festool and Makita
The best barrel grip jigsaw score was a tie and went to the Festool and Makita with 12-points. Festool earned strong scores in Speed / Power Normalization, Vibration, and Scroll Cutting / Tracking. It is a highly engineered, well-made tool.
Makita had strong showings in Ergonomics, Features, and Scroll Cutting / Tracking.During this testing, there were two saws that the crew kept talking about as being the nicest to operate and use - Makita and Hilti in that order. Makita being the crew favorite.

Like a lot of woodworkers, I tend to use the same battery platform (for me, it's Makita) although I will go outside the brand for a good reason. function
Country specific
To disable the soft no-load rotation function, follow the
steps below.
1. Make sure that the tool is turned off.
2. Set the speed adjusting dial to “1”.
3. Press the lock/unlock button to turn on the tool.
4. Set the speed adjusting dial to “6” by turning it, and
then set it to “1” by turn it back.
The lamp blinks twice to indicate that the soft no-load
rotation function is disabled. To enable this function again,
perform the same procedure again.
NOTE:
• If the soft no-load rotation function is disabled, the lamp
blinks twice when the tool is turned on.
• You can also disable or enable the soft no-load rotation
function by changing the speed adjusting dial from “6”
to “1” and changing it from “1” to “6”.

Yes. Super helpful! I have a Makita 12v jigsaw. Will try this procedure on it and see what happens.
Only works on newer Models, I have a older one and it's not mentioned in the manual and it does not work.
Still a good saw, but I'd like to use downcut blades and for that the soft start is a no go.

First off, thanks for the thorough and informative video. You always do a great job. Second, although the specs, data, and comparisons are enjoyable (because I'm a fanatic) I seem to keep falling back to familiarity and enjoyment of use as qualifications for my tool purchases. Visual appearance is in play as well. I'm quite loyal to Makita and have only been let down once I think. Unless they just completely flop on a specific tool, I'm pretty much happy with my purchases. That being said, there are many tools/brands I haven't had my hands on. So, there is that. BUT, I went with Hitachi cordless nailguns. And from all I've seen and heard, that was a good decision.

I used to have a jigsaw attached to my hand most of the day scribing for kitchens and wardrobe panel fits. Then I got carpal tunnel, had an op and I’ve never had the strength in my hand to scribe accurately with a jigsaw since. Take care of your hands carpentry friends. Especially with old tools that vibrate a lot. Great video as usual. 😊👍🏻

I just bought both the Makita and Milwaukee barrel grip jigsaws. The Milwaukee, just like the Makita, has an onboard hex key integrated in the shoe to adjust the bevel.

I brought the hilti but didn't like not being able to very the speed whilst using it, so I went with the d handle version. Which is brilliant.

Having a Milwaukee barrel grip, I just wanted to point out after seeing this, that there is an Allen wrench that pulls out the back of the base plate. The Milwaukee has incredible power, and that’s the only thing that’s important for what I do with it, but I’m not picky since I build cattle troughs, enclosures, head gates/squeeze shoots, mainly with it.

I always love your videos. The Dewalt seems like a winner. I do, however, always get the feeling that some of the rankings do come down to familiarity with a particular tool over another. Not a criticism at all as I typically agree with your findings.
Love all the head to head videos Rob. Keep them coming. I just have one little thought and it may very well be solely my opinion but I wanted to share. I don’t think breaking the power / performance category down into watt hours is 100% fair. The Milwaukee would perform the same whether it has a 3.0 HO battery on it as if it were to have their 12.0 HO battery on it. I know the Milwaukee won this performance category but did not in your D handle head to head due to higher watt hours. If you would have had a 3.0 HO battery on the M18 D handle it would have won the performance category and then won overall I believe. Get what I’m saying? Just wanted to comment on that, love the videos.
Excellent review and test. I’m shocked that not one single saw has a traditional trigger! I have run old Bosch warhorse barrel grip for twenty years and now I’m in the market for a cordless . I can’t believe no makes a saw with a trigger.
I still like my corded Bosch and Makita barrel handle. I do like battery tools but it always adds to the cost, especially when u go to buying replacement batteries. With a corded tool, you know you're gonna have power and reliability.
Been a carpenter for 40 years and never even heard of festool. When i was looking for a new half sheet sander, i found out why. The price my Milwaukee was a little under 200 bucks. The festool was almost 400 bucks. Depending on where you bought it. And my Milwaukee is still going strong after 20 years. Just can't find parts ha. That's why the search for a new one. Ended up with a Bosch os50vc. Found a deal on Amazon for 179. A send back. Brand new. Bosch makes great tools too.
For a least 20 years I had the Bosch jigsaw, 3 years ago I purchased a mafell, what I like, 1,the unique blade clamping system, no roller blade guide so little friction so very little heat and the blades last much longer, 2, the base slides back providing an amazing line of sight and you can almost cut up to a wall /backsplash, 3, you can put the blade in backwards which allows you to cut from underneath...great for scribing what I don't like the price and the special non deflection blades are only available through mafell . Would be nice to see mafell have more suppliers in North America
Yeah, but Mafell P1cc is corded only, right now Mafell has no cordless jigsaw, and this test was about cordless only.
@@loochan325 Yes that is true, for some people that may be an issue, for me it is not, with the type of work I do there is always a nearby power source, and one fewer battery that I will have too buy and eventually dispose of

Though Milwaukee is low on your review list for barrel grip jigsaws, there is one thing about Hilti, Milwaukee, Dewalt, and Festool jigsaws, they are all excellent jigsaws. I am on the Milwaukee platform and have never been disappointed with any Milwaukee tool I owned. So I'll get the Milwaukee because I currently have the Milwaukee platform.
I love the carvex, Just feels right.

Hi Guys!!!! Awesome tests! Thanks! I just wish my Milwaukee didn't come in last place. :-( On a similar note, when I got my Milwaukee barrel jigsaw, the base plate was not perfectly flat. One corner seemed to be a little bent. I called Milwaukee about it, and they sent me a new base plate, at no charge, that was very close to being perfectly flat. Kudos to Milwaukee on their support. Was gonna buy milwaukee before I watched this, now it'll be Makita for my needs thanks.
I have an older corded festool one and it can cut 2 inch/50mm oak with no blade deflection at 90 degree. The blade guide/roller has a adjustable throat so it can be perfect for any width of blades. Ofcourse the blade itself is a big factor also. Dunno if new ones arent that good or blade roller wasnt adjusted correctly in this test?
And I absolutely love my Makita barrel grip.

Love the makita jig saw I swapped for festool and the setup on them is a bit of a pain… I find if not setup correctly the saw blade twists and pops out when cutting curves.

My old wired jigsaw died after 20 years, got the makita last week as already had a makita drill driver with battery and was very surprised by it having so much less vibration over my old one. I regret not demoing or even looking at these sooner

exellent testing again guys , thank you all, however i didn't see the De Walt coming as the best value for the money, and that is because in the testing it's destroying itself when you pull it back. therefore i would think you have to buy a new one a hole lot sooner then with any other , just my thoughts . thanks again and keep up with this awesome content you are making for us

I use the jigsaw a lot for cutting curves in 2" and 4" wood. Went through 3 Bosches always upgrading to the next best one. It had a little guide similar to the Festool. Always had a problem keeping the blade perpendicular. Then I got the Festool. It still didn"t work that well. Got tired of fooling around with that little guide and it finally fell off somewhere. Got the Makita and that has been the best so far. I save the Festool for cutting Hardee board using a fast-cut wood blade. Wouldn't want to dirty my Makita on that.

Makita as usual. So well made, well balanced and thought out. They have swing and missed on some things. But overall tough to beat.

Festool LED lights turn off if you flip it up side down, saves lights shining in your eyes if you are cutting bellow material.
Festool Auto speed control is the only way to get the carvex to run at maximum speed. You can't set it to maximum speed manually. Manually top speed is slower.
Festool Carvex can often run out of sync. This means when you switch it off it parks its self in the wrong place so you are unable to release the blade. To solve this you have to turn jigsaw back on and wait few seconds so its back in sync then turn it off and it should park at the top. So you can release blade.
You could also push the blade up manually but sometimes if its fully down you can't push it manually you need to quick start to move its position then push manually

Good jigsaw review, 15:38 Makita is not the only one with a stored Allen wrench. Milwaukee's is in the back bottom side of the shoe. it is a bit hard to see.
Can you do a supplemental video to add the Mafell jigsaw?
I’m pretty sure the makita soft start can be turned off with a certain speed change with battery in and power on off. It’s right in the manual.

We usually do on longer use tools but with a jigsaw it’s such an under used in auxiliary tool we didn’t think it was a big metric
The milwaukee also has onboard storage for the Allen wrench.

The battery actually gets in the way of my arm position on the Dewalt. I find myself reaching for the D handle version more often. Looks like everyone except Dewalt and Hilti got that right

Makita brings a solid tool to the table most of the time. Good video . Although I wish you would have thrown the good old tried and true Bosch corded barrel jig saw.
Bosch is making a cordless now.
@@michaelhamerin3814 I haven't seen anything Bosch cordless that is very impressive yet. I have a really like their corded barrel jigsaw and it is a great jigsaw. Bosch would have to come with a battery one that is better in every way to make sense for me to buy it. All these manufacturers are really starting to push some great tools across many professions making it hard but yet great if you are needing new tools.
@@fuelediowa I was just bring in up the fact that they do make a cordless, I haven't had any experience with it. I can tell u that I have a Metabo cordless, not compared here either, and it is great. The 18v/36v line is a great set of tools.
I have two Makita barrel grip jigsaws and my favourite feature is that they are made in the UK. I try to buy as few Chinese made tools as possible. I also have some USA made Makita collated screw guns. I'd love it if you mentioned where the tool was made in your reviews.
