  • Opal Hunting is amazingly fun. We found some jewelry quality opals at my private opal claim. We also discovered a new dig site on this claim that shows agates and geodes. What a fantastic day prospecting for gemstones.

We had a family in our 4-H club and all of us used to joke with them that they really stamped their children. They had seven kids and although some were blonde and some were brunette their faces were almost identical it used to just crack this up cuz we could see in the distance yep that kid belongs to such and such family without even knowing them.

As a child, a young boy growing up and learning, I had a fascination as a rock hound. I collected rocks, stones, geodes and list track of it all as I grew up and into other fascinations.
If I could have seen this channel and knew that this is a grown ups fascination that could be a living, rather than just an interest, I'd be doing exactly what you are doing and enjoying the heck out if it. Fortunately, in my aging years, I've got you tube and Dan Hurd and his family so I can be an armchair rock hound and still enjoy every minute of it as if I'm there. sigh.... 😊

Agate, especially chalcedony, are in my top 20, probably top 10 gemstones. I have a lot of favorites. Been collecting gems since I was 5 years old. And it's funny a guy like me does that because I've also been shooting and fighting since I was 5 haha. Just goes to show gemstones are for everyone.

Hiya Dan, I never understood why people think that, opals only comes with color play, 🤔well just like you said...common opals are green and white, but they can also be in every color of the rainbow 🌈😉, common opals don't have color play, you can also have agatized opals or opalized Petrified wood. The opals your finding are simply beautiful.
I hope you and your family, have a awesome blessed day. Cya! 😸🐟out!

The agate has 0 water content and all opals have a water content that is lost over time. That is where the distinctive cracks that identify opals come from. Polishing them seal in the water as good as possible. Nice find and thanks for showing the mining procedure.

Hey Dan look at that beard you’re looking really well mate. I was gonna check out your patreon stuff and I’ve never done before for any of the people I subscribe to. Since you’re picture stone claim has looked after you I felt a bit better that I was so poor and couldn’t help any of my guys out. My other favourite page is called Black Opal Direct run by Justin here in Queensland Australia where I live. I have absolutely got opal fever now and have become really interested in Lapidary to Been waiting months and months for this pandemic to be over with so we can finally get down to lightning ridge down in New South Wales which is about 8 hours away. I really want to thank you though for educating me in so many different things and really wish I could thank you a bit better than just a thanks. Love the Lapidary stuff as your honesty about being a learner in this front not the expertise that you have on geology and gold and all other things shiny that our beautiful Earth has for us.I’d love to know what your background is with geology and why you are so knowledgeable about our Earth.

293rd 👍 ITS not my thang. But ,I gotta say Dan, I'm alot more interested in other rocks now when I go to the river now days. Agate hunting has become my wife's thing because of me watching you and then telling her about it. The other day we found a dark dark purple rock that had a yellow "lightning" looking band/ hair line stringer wrapping around it. Have no clue what it is but it's gorgeous.

Just a thought, but what about bringing a high output leaf blower with you to locations and using it to remove the dirt build up? If you customize one to have a water feed in it you could even have it spray water and was off clinging sediment as you blow off the dirt. Alternatively or in pair with this idea you could hook up a pressure washer in the back of your truck with a water tank/pump and a generator and wash potential surfaces or even cut some types of stone.
